The Royal Cornwall Show 2014 Fun for one and all at the Royal Cornwall Show 2014 5th, 6th & 7th June at the Showground near Wadebridge Recognised as one of the country’s finest agricultural shows, and in its two hundred and twenty first year, the Royal Cornwall Show is fast approaching. Prices this year have been set to attract even more families to enjoy Cornwall’s biggest annual event. “There really is something for everybody at the show,” says Christopher Riddle, RCAA secretary, who is tasked with organising the annual event. A vast array of entertainment and things to do is promised. There is the opportunity to get up close to thousands of animals, of all shapes and sizes that assemble to compete for the top honours. The judging is fascinating and the grand parade of prize winning cattle, sheep and goats

provides a real spectacle in the show’s main ring on days two and three. The Bolddog Lings freestyle motocross team, featured on Britain’s Got Talent this year, the fast paced Mounted Games makes its show debut and parachute display team, the RAF Falcons, return to complete the line-up of headliners set to entertain the crowds who flock to the main ring. Larger than life entertainer Titan the Robot makes the long journey from his home planet to this year’s show. Standing at 8 feet, he proved incredibly popular when he made his bow at the 2013 show. He’ll be joined by street theatre artistes who will entertain show-goers in their own unique way as they meander around the showground avenues. Two live music stages and the Cornwall Festival of Dance stage boast daily schedules containing a wide variety of acts. Young families are well catered for. The show offers a crèche as well as comfortable baby changing and feeding facilities on site.

The S lar Sweet Sp t Solar grants have changed considerably over the past few years. The good news is that a sweet spot has developed which rural business can take advantage of. Iain Beveridge of Mosscliff Environmental explores how South West businesses can capitalise on the opportunities presented.

W

ABOVE Some of the team ready for action

6

hile large megawatt scale solar farms are still possible, they are becoming far more difficult and less profitable due to recent changes in both grants and planning policy. That is before the additional restrictions due to limited grid capacity in many areas now. However, smaller ‘farm scale’ solar PV systems have political support, are more likely to get a viable connection offer, and are eminently profitable, particularly where the farm or business has a need for the energy produced. If roof mounted planning may not be necessary, and even when ground mounted such schemes are generally well received by local authorities. So how big is this sweet spot? The best returns are for systems between 50kW and 250kW in scale – over 250kW the grants drop off quite dramatically – so a 200kW system can actually yield a better return than a 300kW system. How large are such systems? It depends on how you build them – a 250kW roof mounted system would need a suitable roof of around 2000m² (an 80m by 25m roof area for example). A 50kW system requires around 350m² (30m by 12m). These areas increase if the system is ground mounted as you need to leave room between the rows of panels – but we’re talking generally around an acre of ground per 200kW of PV array (although a 250kW array could be built as a single 2m tall row 500m along the edge of a field). What’s the catch? To enjoy the best returns you need to use most of the power generated – field based export only systems do not pay

well unless you connect them to suitable buildings and power requirements. Grant payments are subject to connecting the system to a building or site that will pass a Level ‘D’ or better energy performance certificate survey (EPC) – call us if you would like to explore these limitations in more detail for your site. In short – if you have a need for a fair amount of power (£10k+ a year), have a three phase electrical connection on site and somewhere to locate a system of this scale the signs are good – but still subject to the above requirements. So how much is it worth? For a 250kW system costing in the region of £250,000 you can make around £55,000 in year one (22%!) if all the energy is used on site. This falls to around £40,000 if all the energy is exported (but still connected to a viable building), but is quite a lot less if it’s all exported and not connected to a suitable building. What it also achieves for high energy users is fixing part or all of your energy at wholesale prices – which can be a dramatic competitive advantage. So – if you have a need for electric power, some suitable commercial roof space or an appropriate unshaded area of land, and have an existing three phase supply to site there is good money to be made – but the window of opportunity is closing so best make hay while the solar grants shine!

Wind Turbines Substantial grants available

Generous grant payments are still available with rates locked in and index linked for twenty years. However, a scheduled programme of reduction for these grants has been published and it is important to move quickly to secure the best rates.

Buy, lease or rent We have a range of finance options to fund wind turbine developments, including lease funding secured against the wind turbine, not your land! You can also schedule payments to be less than your FIT grants – so the turbine pays for itself.

From 5kW to 1MW Whatever your location, we have a wide range of reliable turbines available. Our fleet up-time on almost 200 installed turbines is over 99.9%. We handle everything in-house: from surveying and planning through installation and commissioning to on-going support and maintenance.

Free site assessment

Our surveyors can swiftly appraise your proposed site and advise on the most appropriate scale of turbine. Contact us today for a free site assessment.

Sites sought for investors We have investors willing to pay generous rates to rent small areas of land. Depending on the scale of the turbine, a 25m² patch in the right location may be worth thousands of pounds a year in rental income.

Commercial Scale Solar Good returns are still available on commercial scale solar systems.

From 50kW to 10MW Do you have 300m²+ of un-shaded land and a three phase electrical connection? If so contact us today – your site has great potential. Many industrial/ agricultural buildings with large south facing roofs are also viable, as are thin 10m wide strips along the edge of an appropriate field.

Easy payment plans We can arrange for lease or asset finance for your project. You can schedule payments to be less than your FIT grants – so the system pays for itself! Ask us about easy finance options.

Rent your land or commercial roof Sites sought by investors – generous rates payable for suitable south facing roof areas (over 800m²) or fields / sites with south facing or flat un-shaded land. Payments guaranteed for twenty years. Possibility to buy cheap electricity where appropriate. A three phase electrical connection close to the site is a must.

Act now to secure the best return If you have a good site don’t delay – as each grant deadline passes, rates reduce further. Secure approval and installation as soon as possible to maximise returns whether you choose to buy, lease or rent.

Contact us today for a free, impartial appraisal of your site. We can assess what development may be appropriate and discuss income and finance opportunities.

Showing Excellence Farming at its finest The Royal Cornwall Show has always been first and foremost an agricultural show. It’s one of the finest in the UK and it is thriving. Its objective is to promote and celebrate excellence in Cornish farming. Cornwall’s climate supports a uniquely diverse agricultural sector and this is the chance for farmers and growers to show off their wares, do business and socialise. The competitive livestock sections are a big part of the show. Perfectly manicured beef and dairy cattle, sheep, pigs and goats will do battle for top honours. Top judges assemble from across the country to oversee hotly contested classes. This top class show attracts the best of the best. This year the Roussin sheep section celebrates 21 years since it first appeared at the Royal Cornwall Show. The breed was first imported from its native France in 1989, so it’s fitting that a respected judge will be travelling

from Normandy to judge the classes. The Hampshire Down sheep breed, very much the elder statesman by comparison, celebrates 125 years of its society in 2014. The show offers a unique chance for the visiting public to get up close to the myriad of farm animals. On the second and third day of the show, the Grand Parade of prize winning cattle, sheep and goats takes place in the main ring. It’s a real spectacle, as numerous animals of all shapes and sizes are carefully led by their handlers to and around the main ring. The supreme champions pick up their top prizes in front of a large crowd that assembles to witness the event. The sheep shearing competitions also offer a unique insight. Large crowds gather to witness some of the world’s finest exponents of the art competing head to head. It’s addictive, edge of the seat stuff, with accuracy as well as speed counting towards the end result.

Reasons to warm

to renewable heat

New financial benefits from using renewable technologies to heat your home. We speak to Rob Carey at GreenGen UK to find out more

T

he 9th of April 2014 saw the Government launch of the long awaited Domestic Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI). The incentive, which was meant to launch in 2012 but has been repeatedly delayed, is the first scheme of its kind in the world, offering financial incentives for low carbon heating technologies including boilers that burn wood pellets. Around 18,000 households who have installed the technologies in recent years are already eligible to start receiving the payments, which will be made quarterly over seven years. The technologies eligible for the payments include biomass boilers, solar thermal systems that provide hot water, ground source heat pumps that draw heat from warmth underground and air source heat pumps that extract heat from the air outside a home. The RHI differs from the feed-in tariffs for solar panels launched in 2010 – which paid for both electricity generated for home consumption as well as exported to the national grid – by paying just for heat generated for use at home. For example an Air Source heat pump installation in an average 3-4 bedroom home could earn up to £900 per year in RHI Payments. Rob Carey, Managing Director of GreenGenUK said “We have been waiting for years for this scheme to be introduced and now we finally have something with real cost benefits to offer our customers

based in the south west, who in most cases rely completely on Oil or LPG as their source of energy for heating”. Though anyone interested in benefitting from the scheme must ensure they use an MCS installer who will offer a complete design service to find the most appropriate system. Rob adds the following caution “Not all renewable heating is appropriate for every property. For me, the design is critical in There really is no better how any heating system will time to contact GreenGen operate and perform which in UK if you want to take turn is what will provide the advantage of the scheme. incentive payments. That is why For more information or a we only send qualified personnel FREE home survey call to carry out surveys”. 0800 093 3299 . Now in their 4th year, GreenGenUK are regarded as a leading installer of renewable technologies throughout the southwest and installed their first Air Source heat pump in their first month of business. With numerous installations throughout the region, GreengGenUK offer potential customers the chance to visit an installation to see and hear a live working system.

If you, or your family, love horses, the Royal Cornwall Show is the place to see them. They come in all shapes and sizes, colours and even patterns. With over one thousand entries expected in the equine section it’s an important part of the event since animals were first introduced at the second show, held in Helston in 1794. The majority of the ponies and horses that descend on the showground every June do so to compete in the vast array of showing classes. With 190 horse classes, 45 top judges from across the UK and Ireland will preside over the pursuit of rosettes in sections ranging from diminutive Shetland ponies to majestic heavy horses.

The main ring plays host to eight nerve jangling show jumping classes that take place during the three days of the show. For those in the know, the Inter Hunt Relay is a main ring showpiece not to be missed. It’s a race against the clock and each other, involving speed, skill and determination. If you are a dedicated horse enthusiast, a casual observer or looking forward to your first visit, there will be something to keep everyone entertained at this year’s Royal Cornwall Show.

Green Living Cornish householders and businesses with an interest in green living can enjoy the Royal Cornwall Show’s biggest ever showcase of sustainable energy products, services and projects as the popular green energy section of the show expands.

T

he Cornish social enterprise Community Energy Plus are working in partnership with Cornwall Council’s Green Cornwall programme to deliver the Green Cornwall Show at the Royal Cornwall Show in Wadebridge on 5th, 6th and 7th June. The Green Cornwall Show will build on the success of the Royal Cornwall’s Green Energy Village marquee, which has been a popular attraction at the show for the last seven years. Throughout the show, the marquee (stand 250) will be a veritable one-stop-shop for green products and services. The Cornwall Council building opposite the marquee (stand 91) is being incorporated into the Green Cornwall Show, enabling many more businesses and projects within Cornwall’s sustainable energy sector to take part in the green showcase. Visitors will also be able to see a showcase of local businesses ‘trading for people and planet’ as part of the UK’s first Rural Social Enterprise Zone, right here in Cornwall. “Rising energy bills, growing awareness of the impacts of climate change and the opportunities to gain an income from generating renewable electricity and heat, mean that many forward thinking householders in Cornwall are

now harnessing green technologies” explains Dr Tim Jones, Chief Executive of Community Energy Plus. “We’re delighted to be working with Cornwall Council to deliver the Green Cornwall Show at the Royal Cornwall Show and hope that householders will be inspired to take action and help create a more sustainable future for Cornwall.” So whether you’ve been meaning to top up the insulation in your loft, or are interested in taking advantage of financial incentives available for generating your own renewable electricity or heat, the Green Cornwall Show is definitely one of the must see attractions at this year’s Royal Cornwall Show.

Happily Ever After For couples wanting a fairy-tale wedding here in Cornwall, they need look no further than Caerhays Castle and Estate. It has all the elements to make the big day one to remember.

C

ornwall has some glorious gardens, amazing coastline and incredible estates and at Caerhays you get all this in one magnificent location. Here you will find two venues licensed for weddings, two stunning locations for your reception, a superb natural setting and luxury accommodation. Caerhays sits in a sheltered valley overlooking Porthluney Cove on the south Cornish coast and is truly a hidden jewel. Despite such a peaceful, away-from-it-all setting, Caerhays is easily accessible and extremely welcoming. The castle itself, set in the heart of a woodland garden, with a lake and sweeping pasture to the fore, provides a fairy-tale backdrop for that special day. One of the two venues licensed for marriages at Caerhays is the Old Coastguard’s Lookout, high on the

headland to the west of Porthunley Cove. The building was designed by the Prince Regent’s architect, architect John Nash and was originally built in the 1820s as a banqueting room for residents and guests at Caerhays Castle. However, it fell into disrepair and was used as a coastguard lookout, hence the name, but has now been recently expertly restored and licensed. It is a wedding venue with a difference - a place that exudes unspoiled style and atmosphere and is approached over fields in a 4X4! It provides an experience never to be forgotten and this unforgettable venue has already held two weddings with five more booked. Caerhays marketing manager Lucinda Rimmington believes the history of the Lookout and the estate’s other wedding attractions will generate great interest and excitement. “This discovery adds real significance to the building and to any couple’s wedding day. It is a magical building steeped in history with breathtaking views out to sea. It now has a new roof and although you can’t light a fire in the fireplace, the estate carpenter has made removable windows so it is completely dry and cosy for all the guests!” An elegant, restored Georgian lodge at the heart of the estate is the other special wedding venue at Caerhays. ABOVE The Cutting is a unique feature of the estate that can also be used for a reception BELOW The Vean accomodates 16 guests

Vean offers five star service, luxurious comfort and unique character, all in a tranquil, rural setting. “Couples can be married here, or simply use The Vean for their reception. They can also stay overnight in one of the eight rooms,” said Lucinda. Staying at The Vean is a special experience in itself. Luxury and friendly, attentive service are the key factors that make a stay here one you would want to repeat. The Vean is also an ideal venue for a wedding reception. If a relatively small affair is what you want, then guests can be accommodated within the building. For larger gatherings, a marquee can be erected in the grounds. The Cutting is a unique feature of the estate that can also be used for a reception. This was once a natural hill that sheltered the castle from general view and from bad weather coming in from the sea. In the 1860s, the top of

the hill was dug away to provide levelled lawns and to improve views from the castle. Now it is a wedding reception venue with a difference and with a view to die for! Caerhays is nothing if not versatile. Even the beach at Porthluney can be hired for a reception with a difference and as settings go, that’s as good as it gets.

Cornwall Farmers return to Royal Cornwall Show with two show-stopping stands oyal Cornwall Show and Cornwall Farmers have been synonymous with each other for many years. Last year the farmer owned cooperative took a break from the show while it started preparations for an investment programme that would include the roll out of a new country store, Patch & Acre. This is now well underway with the third store opening in May and plans well underway for four more before the end of the September. This year Cornwall Farmers return to the show with two stands, a Cornwall Farmers Marquee that they will be sharing with a selection of agricultural partners and a Patch & Acre store that will be selling a selection of country lifestyle and equine products. Both stands will be manned by Cornwall Farmers’ expert staff with a strong team of agricultural specialists based on the Cornwall Farmers stand and a many of the equine specialists working on the Patch & Acre stand during the three day event. There will be lots of great show offers available and special deals to be had on the Patch & Acre stand on a range of fantastic brands, including Ariat, Hunter, Joules and many more. In addition to this, during the show Cornwall Farmers will be running two exclusive prize draws. Visitors to the event will have the opportunity to win a Land

Rover Experience and £250 of shopping vouchers to spend at any of Cornwall Farmers’ twelve stores. The second prize draw will be to win two VIP tickets to this year’s Veuve Clicquot Polo on the Beach event at Watergate Bay, which takes place on 5th and 6th July. Shelley Fletcher-Bryant from Cornwall Farmers said, “Following a break from the show last year, we are delighted to be returning to the Royal Cornwall Show. The whole team are looking forward to welcoming many of our members and customers to the two stands during the show as well, of course, as meeting lots of new faces at the event.” Cornwall Farmers has 12 Country Stores across Cornwall and Devon, selling a vast range of goods for farmers and smallholders as well as everything for the garden including garden essentials and machinery, country clothing, footwear, pet food, treats and bedding and everything for horse and rider.

WW1 trench life brought to life at the Royal Cornwall Show Fittingly, as the country prepares to mark the centenary of the start of the First World War, a band of dedicated re-enactors will bring life on the 1914 battlefields alive at this year’s Royal Cornwall Show.

“Our main aim, in bringing this era to life, is to spark people’s interest and inspire them to find out more about their ancestors involvement in the war.” Says Amanda Durden from the Group

The WW1 Living History Group, based at Launceston with members spread across the country, will provide an authentic scene to demonstrate what life on the front line would have been like for civilians and soldiers from the Duke of Cornwall’s Light Infantry, the local regiment of the British Army. This includes original uniforms, equipment and even building their own trench on the showground, to 1914 army manual specifications.

Cornwall played its part during the conflict, directly on the battlefields, but also in our farmers’ fields to ensure our armed forces and the nation were fed.

The re-enactors will be camping out during the show, as their counterparts would have done nearly one hundred years ago. There will be an opportunity for show-goers to try gas masks and shell jackets, as well as having a go at putting on putties, a type of gaiter used to keep water and rats at bay in the Great War trenches.

The Royal Cornwall Show was involved in the war effort, not only by encouraging innovation and advancement within farming, but also supporting the supply of horses required for important war time roles. In spite of war raging, Camborne successfully hosted the 1915 show, and the Royal Cornwall Agricultural Association members continued to make subscriptions and donations to the Allies Fund. The fund was distributed to European farmers to rebuild their farms after their land became battlefields.
