Welcome

From the Editor

to the latest edition of Cornwall Living!

This issue we celebrate the incredible work of the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI), the charity that saves lives at sea. With over 200 years of courageous service, the RNLI plays a vital role along Cornwall’s rugged coastlines, deploying both all-weather lifeboats and agile inshore rescue boats to reach those in distress.

Equally important are the RNLI’s highly trained beach lifeguards, who patrol many of Cornwall’s busiest beaches, offering reassurance, first aid and fast response in emergencies. Their presence provides a vital safety net for both locals and the millions of visitors who flock to our beautiful shores each year. But safety at sea starts long before the waves rise. That’s why the RNLI champions sea safety education and skills, encouraging everyone, from first-time paddleboarders to seasoned sailors, to understand the risks and respect the water. Central to this is their powerful Float to Live campaign, which teaches a simple yet life-saving message: if you find yourself in trouble in the water, float on your back to regain control and improve your chances of survival. Turn to page 13, where we celebrate the brave guardians of our seas and discover how you can get involved.

If you’re looking to purchase a holiday home in the Duchy, turn to our Cornwall Living Holiday Retreats supplement (from page 29) where we feature an inspiring selection of lodges available to buy in some amazing locations. Lodge ownership is a great way to enjoy year-round holidays in Cornwall and with some parks offering managed letting, you could also benefit from earning money from the weeks you don’t use. From larger sites with a full range of facilities to smaller, more intimate away-from-it-all parks, there’s a holiday home for all.

We’ve also been off exploring the wild and rugged beauty of west Cornwall in our Cornwall Living Penwith supplement from page 59, an area of the Duchy where communities are defined by the landscape and creativity blooms. Take a gastronomic tour with chef Jude Kereama (from page 68), treat yourself to some beautiful jewellery inspired by this stretch of coastline (from page 66) or escape to the Isles of Scilly (from page 64). From its cliff paths and beaches to its villages and harbours, wherever you find yourself in west Cornwall you’re assured of stunning scenery and a warm welcome.

Don’t forget that the nominations for the Cornwall Living Awards 2025 are still open. Let us know your favourite Cornish business and they could be shortlisted for one of the 12 award categories – head to page 56 for all the details.

Summer fun, witches and haunted happenings

Something is brewing at Bodmin Jail this autumn… but before you indulge in something conjured from the cauldron, families can enjoy summer savings with Kids Go Free this August. It’s the perfect time to explore one of Cornwall’s most atmospheric and unique heritage attractions.

In September, the Jail launches Season of the Witch, a month-long celebration exploring the history of witchcraft. Expect powerful stories of real women like Joan Wytte (The Fighting Fairy Woman of Bodmin)

and the Bideford Witches, captivating tours accompanied by a supportive and evocative exhibition.

Then in October, prepare for the South West’s most haunted Halloween destination – with family daytime activities, fireworks (31st October) and late-night scares.

Whether you’re a history buff or thrill seeker, Bodmin Jail is unmissable this season.

Health, safety & compliance

Katie Warren, of Fixer Property & Management, offers her expert knowledge on the health and safety requirements for holiday homeowners. This is not something owners should take lightly, and there is a level of responsibility and duty of care when charging guests to stay at your property. Here are the key things to have in place that are non-negotiable

As well as standard buildings and contents insurance, owners must hold Public Liability insurance (typically with at least £2 million cover) to protect against guest injury or third-party damage.

A Gas Safety Certificate or oil boiler service must be renewed annually, and carbon monoxide alarms should be regularly tested. An EICR (Electrical Installation Condition Report) is required every five years to assess electrical safety.

A Fire Risk Assessment should ideally be reviewed each year. All fire safety equipment must be serviced annually, with alarms tested and logged at every changeover.

For properties with unvented water tanks, log burners, or open fires, ensure annual servicing and chimney sweeping, along with CO2 alarm checks.

PAT testing should be carried out yearly on portable appliances, excluding brand-new items, though at around £1 per item, it’s often easier to test everything.

Hot tubs must comply with HSG282 guidelines, and for any property left vacant, a Legionella risk assessment and cleaning protocol is strongly recommended.

From friendship to business partnership

Ally and Kim launched Mylor Interior Design in early 2025, drawing on their extensive backgrounds in the creative industry and property development. Their collaboration began in 2021 when Kim purchased a renovation project near Gweek, Cornwall, turning to her friend Ally for design expertise. Together, they transformed the property into two luxury holiday lettings, demonstrating how thoughtful design can deliver exceptional returns without excessive expenditure. The properties achieved some of the highest occupancy rates in the county during 2023 and 2024, validating their approach to value driven interior solutions.

Their combined experience spans interiors magazine styling, private client work, property sales, holiday letting management and development planning. This diverse skill set, coupled with strong local connections, positions them to tackle projects of any scale. The duo’s approachable nature and genuine enthusiasm for creating functional, appealing spaces extend to residential homes, commercial properties and holiday accommodations across Cornwall.

A commitment to exceptional care

Since 2005, Heart of the South has been committed to redefining care through a personalised, long-term approach. Born out of a desire to improve inadequate industry practices, the organisation champions consistent, tailored support that allows individuals to lead longer, safer and more fulfilling lives at home.

At the core of Heart of the South’s ethos is the belief in continuity. A stable, welltrained team of carers works together to provide uninterrupted care, from six to twenty-four hours a day. This structure not only ensures cover during absences but also builds meaningful, enduring relationships between carers and those they support. The results are profound: individuals are empowered to reach personal goals and live with greater independence and happiness. Heart of the South’s distinctive model has gained professional recognition, with many noting the remarkable longevity and wellbeing of those in their care. Rated “Good” by the Care Quality Commission (CQC), the service’s impact continues to draw praise.

This year, the organisation celebrated a proud moment when team member Steve Dowley was named Support Worker of the Year 2024 in the Proud to Care awards. The wider team, including the Registered Manager, has also received multiple nominations – further testament to the strength of the service and its people.

Heart of the South offers expert care across a wide spectrum, including Elder and Dementia Care, complex and degenerative conditions, life-changing injuries, learning disabilities, autism support and mental health care – all grounded in the principle of compassionate, person-centred continuity.

Explore Cornwall’s past in the heart of Helston

Looking for something different to do this summer? Why not explore the Museum of Cornish Life? Located in Helston’s historic market buildings, this fascinating museum tells the story of Cornish life.

Within this vast space, you’ll discover a rich collection of Cornish artefacts, covering areas as diverse as farming, archaeology, school life and sports.

This summer, the exhibition features the shipwrecks off the Lizard. You can learn

about Henry Trengrouse, whose harrowing experience of witnessing the sinking of HMS Anson prompted him to invent a rocket-powered life-saving device.

Admission to the museum is free from 10am to 4pm Monday to Saturday, with sea-themed family making craft workshops through the summer on Monday afternoons and Thursday mornings.

The RNLI is the charity that saves lives at sea. Powered primarily by kind donations and with the vast majority of RNLI people as volunteers, its search and rescue service has been saving lives for over 200 years. To find out how to donate or get involved, visit www.rnli.org

Beneath this idyllic scene, a group of unsung heroes keeps watch over Cornwall’s waters, ensuring the safety of residents and visitors alike. The RNLI works tirelessly to respond to emergencies, protect beachgoers and save lives. Together, they form a cohesive and well-oiled machine, always ready to act when the sea turns from serene to perilous. When you think of sea rescues in Cornwall, the first name that likely comes to mind is the RNLI, a lifeline to both locals and tourists. In 2024 alone, they carried out over two million preventative actions. In addition, they attended 13,135 incidents, helped 17,068 people, and saved 85 lives. Cornwall is home to some of the busiest RNLI lifeboat stations in the country. With its 400 miles of coastline and unpredictable weather, Cornwall’s stations are always on high alert. Each station is equipped to deal with a wide range of emergencies –from helping fishermen in distress to rescuing swimmers swept out by rip currents.

What makes Cornwall’s RNLI lifeboat stations so extraordinary is the volunteer crew members who risk their lives for others. These volunteers, many of whom live and work in the local community, are on-call 24/7. They undergo extensive training to ensure they’re prepared for all eventualities, from highspeed rescues to navigating Cornwall’s often treacherous waters.

In addition to the RNLI’s lifeboats, Cornwall’s RNLI Lifeguard stations provide essential, lifesaving cover on our beaches. These teams are stationed along some of the county’s busiest beaches and are tasked with preventing accidents before they happen, as well as responding rapidly when things go wrong.

RNLI lifeguards are often the first responders to any emergency on the beach. Each lifeguard has undergone a rigorous training programme that includes water rescue techniques, first aid, CPR and beach safety awareness. They are expert at spotting rip currents and can quickly identify dangerous hazards for beachgoers. Whether it’s a group of children caught in a rip tide or a surfer in distress, RNLI lifeguards are there, ready to respond.

When Richard, 62, collapsed and fell unconscious on Fistral Beach earlier this year, quick-thinking RNLI lifeguards sprinted to the rescue. “I was trying to talk to Richard, but he fell unconscious and stopped breathing,” recalls his wife Tracey. ‘It was surreal because moments before we were chatting normally. The lifeguards came running full pelt towards us, with their kit, and took over from me. I stood back and watched as one lifeguard did chest compressions and another used the defibrillator on Richard. It all happened so fast.”

ABOVE A dramatic rescue scene requiring expertise, strength and courage

Thanks to the quick-thinking lifeguards, Richard regained consciousness in a matter of minutes. But the drama wasn’t over. When the ambulance arrived, Richard was taken to hospital where he learned he’d suffered a cardiac arrest. Richard learned that three of his arteries were blocked and he was going to need a triple heart bypass. Major surgery, but because the lifeguards had acted promptly, his heart was undamaged, and he would likely make a full recovery.

Lifeguards and lifeboats often collaborate in complex rescue scenarios. When a swimmer is caught far from shore, lifeguards will guide the rescue operation, while the lifeboats provide the transport to safety. This seamless teamwork is a critical component of Cornwall’s sea safety infrastructure.

Cornwall’s lifeguards learn their skills from a very young age, often as members of one of the Duchy’s many surf lifesaving clubs. Nippers and Youth squads learn to read the beach and the waves and are encouraged to compete to hone their skills. From ocean swimming, board and ski paddling and tube rescues, to beach runs and the fine art of ‘flags’, each of these disciplines teaches our up-and-coming lifeguards the water and land skills required to save lives at sea.

Piran Phillips is a well-known face on Cornwall’s surf lifesaving scene. Having worked as an RNLI Lifeguard he now coaches at Portreath Surf Lifesaving Club as well as competing on the world stage. I asked him why he thinks learning water safety is so important in Cornwall? “Every day I’m in the water as an athlete and lifesaver. I’ve had the luxury of living in Portreath most of my life and the lifesaving club has taught me how to recognise dangers, help those in need, and

even use the water conditions to my advantage as a competitor. After almost all the rescues I have done on Cornwall’s coastline, the victim has had little knowledge of how they got into trouble. It’s this knowledge that we need to instil in kids, reinforced through schools, so we can enjoy Cornwall’s coast to the fullest.”

Surf lifesaving clubs in Cornwall help educate and train young people to become more confident and responsible around the sea and teach essential skills, as Piran explains: “Lifesaving is the only sport in the world which offers elite level competition and teaches you how to save a person’s life at the same time. The sport is a gift and one of the world’s best kept secrets. You can learn how to enjoy the ocean by swimming, board paddling, on a surf ski, on an inshore rescue or surf boat. Surf lifesaving clubs are unique in that they offer this much depth of knowledge, skill and fitness levels.

“As Head Coach and a competitor for Portreath SLSC, also competing for GB, I train alongside others several times every day as we push ourselves to become the ultimate athletes, but as lifesavers we’re always on duty

and remember our core principle and the meaning behind our sport. In many instances at Portreath, training has paused to help an individual in need, everyone’s safety remains at the forefront.”

For those that haven’t discovered surf lifesaving, I ask Piran how the progression works from club to lifeguard? “Most clubs in Cornwall take on Nippers from the age of 6, but you can join at any age, 12...20...40...65!

The beauty of our sport is you can join whoever you are – all clubs will open their arms to new members and help teach you the love we have for the water. Once you reach 16, you can complete the SLSGB Lifeguard Award,

which qualifies you to perform rescues and first aid professionally.”

Finally, I’m keen to find out what advice Piran would give to someone visiting the Cornish coast for the first time to help them stay safe in the water? “Visit the lifesaving clubs on the beach, talk to athletes and coaches while they train… most lifesaving clubs have websites or social media accounts which can help give you the best local knowledge for the beach you’re visiting.”

Across the UK and Channel Islands, RNLI lifeguards help keep people visiting the beach safe. If you’re heading to the coast, choose a lifeguarded beach.

Summer

READY

Cornwall’s most inventive water sports outfit gears up for a busy season.

There’s a kind of kinetic power to MAD Water Sports. Based in Wadebridge and run with enthusiasm, it’s the sort of place where conversation fluidly veers from fin configurations to cold water therapy, electric bikes to being stoked. Already a hub for paddleboards, wetsuits and surf hardware, the store now crackles with a fresh lineup and new ideas, fusing local knowledge with a global perspective on performance.

The latest arrivals add extra wattage. The new Eovolt electric bikes slot effortlessly into the rhythm of an adventure lifestyle. Complementing the Super73 adventure bikes already sold by MAD, but with a more urban perspective, they're compact, nimble and built to stow away in a camper van, boot of an SUV or estate car. These aren’t just efficient modes of transport; they’re a prompt to wander, to roam wider, quicker and with less resistance.

For those who favour icy precision over lukewarm improvisation, MAD’s new instore range of YETI drinkware and coolers is equally welcome. Engineered with the kind of obsessive rigour usually reserved for deep space exploration, these hardy companions are built to endure Cornish summers with their rogue wave squalls and beach-based picnics alike.

In the boardroom – of the wave-riding variety – things are also gathering pace. There’s a fresh quiver of Firewire and Thunderbolt surfboards and custom shapes from Channel Islands now in store and online. From the curious curvature of the GROOVE board to the smooth versatility of the TJ Pro Mid, each one evokes a language of movement and possibility, waiting to be translated on water.

Even the wetsuits are evolving. The new Mystic Evolve natural foam suit, now available both online and in-store, blends environmental conscience with technical prowess. This is gear for the committed –engineered with purpose, not pomp.

MAD Water Sports isn’t merely keeping up with the season; it’s, as always, aligning itself to the rhythm of adventure. And what’s more, it’s also committed to sourcing and supplying products from companies that actively reduce plastic in their packaging and prioritise durability and longevity, so you can be sure that your purchase is having the least environmental impact, whilst reducing carbon emissions.

Perfect for OUTDOOR SPACES

Why Resin Bound makes for the ideal surface from which to enjoy your summer and beyond.

As we embrace the better weather and outdoor areas become the centre of relaxation, entertainment and activity, homeowners and businesses start considering improvements that make gardens, patios and driveways functional and visually appealing. One solution that has gained increasing popularity in recent years is Resin Bound surfaces, and for good reason. It combines aesthetics with durability and low maintenance, making it the perfect choice for summer-ready outdoor living.

Resin Bound surfacing is a mixture of natural aggregate stones and a clear resin binder, which is hand-trowelled onto a solid base to create a smooth, seamless finish. Unlike loose gravel or traditional paving, the stones are firmly bound together, creating a smooth and seamless surface that is not only attractive but also practical, sustainable and long-lasting. One of the most compelling reasons to choose

Resin Bound surfacing is its visual appeal. The mixture of stones can be customised in a wide range of colours to suit different design preferences, whether you're going for a sleek modern look or a more natural, rustic finish. This flexibility makes it easy to match your new surface with existing garden features, house colours, or outdoor furniture.

In summer, when gardens are in full bloom and outdoor entertaining is at its peak, having a surface that enhances the look of your space can make a significant difference. Resin Bound driveways, patios and pathways can instantly elevate curb appeal and create an inviting outdoor environment.

Summer weather can be unpredictable, with everything from scorching heatwaves to sudden downpours. Resin Bound surfaces are designed to withstand a wide range of weather conditions. The materials used are UV-stable, which means they won’t fade or degrade when

exposed to sunlight. The structure of the Resin Bound material also handles temperature fluctuations well, avoiding the cracking and erosion that can affect other types of paving. Whether you’re hosting a barbecue or parking a car, you can count on your surface to remain intact and functional throughout all seasons.

Perhaps one of the most significant advantages of Resin Bound surfacing is its permeability. Thanks to the porous nature of the material, water can pass through easily into the ground below. This reduces the risk of puddling, surface water flooding and ice formation in colder months, making it not just summer-ready but suitable year-round.

This sustainable drainage feature means that Resin Bound surfaces comply with Sustainable Urban Drainage Systems (SuDS) regulations, which are increasingly important in urban planning and eco-conscious landscaping. During the summer months, when sudden thunderstorms can overwhelm traditional drainage systems, this permeability becomes especially valuable.

Summer is for enjoying your garden, not spending all your time maintaining it. Resin Bound surfaces are virtually maintenance-free. They don’t attract weeds in the same way as traditional paving or loose gravel, and any dirt or debris can usually be removed with a light power wash or sweep.

Unlike block paving, where weeds can grow in between joints, Resin Bound surfaces have no loose stones or open seams, drastically minimising the opportunity for plant growth or ant nests. That means more time enjoying your space and less time dealing with unsightly and time-consuming maintenance issues.

As friends and family gather for summer get-togethers, safety becomes a priority. Resin Bound surfaces provide an anti-slip finish, even when wet. This makes them ideal for pathways, pool surrounds and patios where

people might be walking barefoot or in wet conditions.

Because they are smooth and seamless, they are also accessible and safe for strollers, wheelchairs, and bicycles – a big plus for families and active households.

With all these practical and aesthetic benefits, it's no surprise that Resin Bound surfaces can also add value to your property. As more buyers seek attractive, low-maintenance outdoor spaces, having a professionally installed Resin Bound surface can be a strong selling point.

Summer is an excellent time to invest in these kinds of upgrades, as the warmer, drier conditions are perfect for installation and you can enjoy the benefits right away.

Resin Bound surfacing is more than just a trend – it’s a smart, attractive and practical solution for enhancing outdoor spaces. Its blend of beauty, durability, and lowmaintenance features makes it ideal for the summer months and beyond. Whether you’re planning a garden revamp, upgrading your driveway, or creating a welcoming patio, choosing a Resin surface can help you get the most out of your outdoor space.

Fifteen years of ICONIC INTERIORS

Bespoke furnishings and broad horizons define this long-established Cornish design studio.

This summer marks fifteen years since Eve Hughes Interior Design was established in Cornwall. Over that time, the company has become known for its measured, personal approach and a particular strength in bespoke soft furnishings – all designed and made locally. With 25 years of experience in the field, Eve brings both technical knowledge and creative judgement to every project, whether it’s a full-scale interior scheme or a simple Roman blind.

Working from her studio in Truro, Eve leads a small, skilled team specialising in handmade curtains, blinds, cushions and soft furnishings. Clients are welcomed by appointment and each commission begins with a discussion around needs, context and ideas – a process that’s collaborative, focused and notably free of jargon.

Although Cornwall remains the company’s base, its projects now reach well beyond – including a third overseas commission currently underway in Switzerland. The team travels throughout the UK, undertaking a wide range of interiors projects. Travel remains a strong influence on Eve’s own home decor – Mexico in particular – where colour, texture and form continue to inspire

her personal style and creative thinking. “When travel and interiors combine, it’s an absolute dream for me,” she says. The result is a studio equally at home with clean-lined contemporary interiors and more traditional country houses.

Clients often mention Eve’s ability to listen, translate and organise; qualities that underpin her practical, design-led process. “Working with Eve was an absolute pleasure,” say Chris and Karen from St Mawes. “She brought professionalism, creativity and a deep understanding of our vision to the project. Her ability to translate our ideas into a beautifully cohesive design helped us create the dream home we had always imagined.”

Whether it’s a hand-stitched roman blind, a full reworking of a coastal property, or a room that needs pulling together with the right fabric and palette, Eve Hughes Interior Design continues to deliver work that is thoughtful, individual and well-resolved.

Precision and PEACE OF MIND

Advanced dental care in Cornwall, led by clinical skill and calm expertise.

Adentist’s chair can feel like a battleground for the anxious, but at Lander Dental & Implant Clinic, reassurance comes not in platitudes, but via precision. This is a practice where expertise and authority quell the feelings of disquiet that many feel. Situated in Truro, Lander is a centre for Invisalign® and dental implants, thanks to a team whose credentials stretch far beyond Cornwall.

They have extensive experience in advanced implantology with their Invisalign® provision underpinned by the latest iTero 3D digital scanner, giving patients a clear visualisation of how treatment will transform their smile – a subtle but uplifting glimpse of how the future could be.

But technology alone doesn’t define Lander. It’s the thoughtful way each member of the team goes about their respective tasks that enhances what’s provided. Their approach is collaborative and kind, particularly with those who’ve found dental appointments difficult in the past. Patients who’ve been hesitant for years often find they move forward with treatment here, not because they’re pressured, but because they’re genuinely listened to. The highly experienced team pride themselves on a wide range of treatments they collectively offer in routine and specialist areas,

including dental health check-ups, hygiene services, fillings, periodontics (gums), endodontics (root canal therapy), prosthodontics (crowns, bridges and dentures), teeth whitening, teeth straightening and dental implants.

The practice also works closely with other dental professionals, accepting referrals for implant procedures, with clinical rigour and full liaison with the referring dentist or GP. Whether for a routine check-up or advanced restorative work, patients are treated in a setting designed around confidence – theirs, not just the dentist’s.

Lander Dental & Implant Clinic is where clarity of care meets depth of skill. For those seeking a renewed smile, or simply a practice they can trust, it is a place where care, craft and credibility take centre stage. Lander Dental & Implant Clinic is part of PortmanDentex – a dental care group who enable better health and happiness across lifetimes.

Ownership with a CORNISH OUTLOOK

Compelling reasons to buy at Gwel an Mor.

Owning a coastal holiday home in Cornwall is nothing new, but the offer at Gwel an Mor is a cut above the average. Located above Portreath on the north coast, this private development combines intelligent design and a high standard of build quality, with long-term security and year-round access. For those seeking a coastal retreat that functions equally well as an investment, a family base, or a holiday let, it presents a compelling case.

At a time when many holiday homes face uncertainty over council tax surcharges and short-term let restrictions, Gwel an Mor’s properties are exempt from the second home levy and come with a 999-year lease. There’s a 12-month holiday licence too, meaning owners can enjoy their lodge at any time of year without the limitations faced by many traditional holiday parks.

This combination of longevity and freedom is rare, and it helps explain why ownership here feels less like a lifestyle gamble and more like a strategic investment with lasting value.

For many buyers, mortgaging a holiday home is essential. Unlike most lodges, which fall outside mainstream lending criteria, the lodges at Gwel an Mor are built to full residential building regulations and are fully mortgageable. That opens the door to a far broader group of buyers, particularly those looking to offset their outlay through holiday letting or family use across the seasons.

Two distinct styles of lodge are available. The new Scandinavian Lodges, launched at a starting price of £189,995, are a first for Gwel an Mor. Built in timber with a pitched roof and bold, angular lines, they offer openplan living on the upper floor, with sea views from a glass-fronted balcony. Downstairs, you’ll find two to three bedrooms, including an ensuite master, as well as a private veranda and a double-parking bay. For buyers with an eye on rental potential, they represent an attractive price point with strong guest appeal, helping to offset ongoing ownership costs.

Signature Lodges, priced from £295,995, take things further. These single-storey homes feature contemporary interiors with an emphasis on sustainability: smart heating, underfloor warmth, robust insulation and even solar-powered EV charging. All have a hot tub, and all enjoy either countryside or coastal views. While the styling is subtle, the infrastructure is anything but; these are serious holiday homes built with year-round comfort in mind.

Beyond the lodges, it’s the park’s wider offer that seals the deal for many owners. On-site facilities (open 11 months a year) include a well-equipped gym, a spa, a swimming

pool and a nine-hole golf course. An onsite restaurant serves regionally sourced food.

Then there’s Feadon Wildlife Centre, where guests can book close-up encounters with owls, snakes, meerkats, reindeer and more.

The park offers a comprehensive letting scheme designed to help owners offset the annual running costs of holiday home ownership. By continually enhancing the onpark experience to encourage repeat bookings, Gwel an Mor provide owners with peace of mind, knowing their holiday home is well cared for even when they’re not using it.

For those who may not have previously considered lodge ownership, Gwel an Mor presents a fresh alternative – combining the privacy of a second home with the warmth and connection of a village-like community. It’s an approach that appeals to families, retirees, investors and relocators alike.

For those in search of a Cornwall base without the red tape and running costs of a traditional second home, Gwel an Mor offers something grounded in logic, supported by infrastructure and a location to fall in love with.

Retreat IN STYLE

Explore the benefits of owning a luxury holiday home at Retallack Resort, with its exceptional on-site facilities just minutes from the coast.

There’s a unique joy in returning to a place that feels entirely your own, especially when it offers the kind of luxury, freedom and comfort found at Retallack Resort. Just ten minutes from the foodie haven of Padstow and Cornwall’s dramatic north coast, this countryside retreat offers the rare chance to own a piece of Cornwall without compromise. Here, fully furnished holiday homes start from just £149,950, delivering not only a beautifully finished space but also a lifestyle that makes every return feel like the best kind of homecoming.

Holiday home ownership at Retallack is refreshingly simple. With a 999-year lease, owners are assured long-term peace of mind, while selected properties come free from stamp duty and legal fees making the process as stress-free as the holidays themselves. Step through the door of your new property and everything is ready for you: from stylish interiors to spacious outdoor decking, each

home is thoughtfully designed for ease and enjoyment. Many even come with the option of a private hot tub, perfect for soaking up the serenity of the countryside under star-studded skies.

But perhaps what sets Retallack apart is the ease of ownership. Everything is turnkey. There’s no renovation, no furnishing, and no to-do list, just your very own Cornish escape, ready to enjoy from day one. And when you’re not using it? There’s the opportunity to earn a healthy income by subletting through the resort’s managed letting scheme. It’s a smart way to offset costs while giving other holidaymakers the chance to experience a slice of this Cornish paradise.

Unlike many holiday parks, Retallack is open all year, which means every season can be savoured in its own way. Whether it’s spring sunshine on a quiet coastal walk, summer fun with the family, or a cosy winter break with spa treatments and hot drinks by

the fire, the resort offers a true year-round escape. This kind of flexibility is perfect for families, couples, or anyone seeking a more permanent base to enjoy Cornwall in every season.

One of the standout features of life at Retallack is the wealth of on-site facilities that make every visit exciting, relaxing, or both. For those who love the water, Retallack is home to Cornwall’s only FlowRider surf simulator; a wave machine that lets guests of all skill levels ride the continuous wave, all without ever setting foot in the sea. It’s an adrenaline rush that appeals as much to kids as it does to adventurous adults. The on-site Aqua Park offers another splash-filled thrill: a floating playground of inflatables and obstacle-course fun that’s a hit with families and groups of friends alike, while the Wake Park provides adrenaline-fuelled fun either on a board or an exhilarating Ringo ride.

For more traditional water lovers, the indoor swimming pool offers a calm alternative ideal for morning laps or unwinding with the kids. There’s also a well-equipped gym for those wanting to stay active and the Esya Spa, a calming sanctuary offering treatments that range from deep tissue massages to restorative facials. Whether you’re recharging after a day exploring the coast or simply treating yourself to a little downtime, this is where the real world melts away.

When appetites kick in, The Lookout Bar & Eatery is a place to refuel and relax. With its welcoming, family-friendly vibe and hearty menus inspired by fresh local produce, it’s a hub for casual dining, weekend brunches and those long summer evenings over a glass of something chilled. Whether you’re eating in, grabbing a takeaway, or sharing stories over a Cornish ale, it’s all designed to make your time at Retallack easy and enjoyable.

It’s this blend of peace and play that makes Retallack so appealing. While the resort itself sits in gentle countryside, the wild beauty of the coast is moments away. A short drive takes you to Padstow’s famous harbour, the golden sands of Harlyn Bay, or the surfy buzz of Newquay. Coast paths beckon for long walks and hidden coves await discovery. Then, after a day of exploring, you return to calm: your own tranquil retreat, with a glass of something special on the deck and the gentle ripple of the lake as your evening soundtrack.

For those thinking long term, the financial sense stacks up too. From lakeside apartments to spacious three- and fourbedroom lodges, there are options to suit various budgets and aspirations. Selected properties are mortgageable and come with a 10-year warranty, and with dedicated advisors on hand, the buying process is made refreshingly smooth.

Ownership also comes with a host of perks; discounted spa treatments, food and drink offers, priority booking for on-site activities, and exclusive owner events, all designed to make every visit special. In a world where time away matters more than ever, Retallack offers something truly valuable: a chance to own your downtime, to create memories with loved ones, explore Cornwall at your leisure and invest not just in property, but in a lifestyle. For many, it’s the dream of Cornwall made real. And right now, it’s more within reach than ever.

Celebrating

CORNISH ROOTS

Why

Iholiday home owners trust Cornish Traditional Cottages.

n a holiday letting industry increasingly shaped by large, impersonal platforms, Cornish Traditional Cottages continues to stand apart. Established in 1964, it is Cornwall’s original holiday letting agency, independent, family-run, and focused exclusively on the county it has always called home.

For more than 60 years, the company has maintained the same core values: providing a personal, knowledgeable service that champions Cornwall, its communities, and the individual cottage owners it supports. It is not part of a national chain, nor is it directed by remote investors or offshore shareholders. Instead, it is run by a dedicated team of local people who live and work in Cornwall, and who care deeply about the success of each holiday home in their care.

Owners who choose to work with Cornish Traditional Cottages benefit from a tailored, hands-on approach. This includes practical support with interior design and layout, pricing guidance, professional photography, and advice on compliance and regulation. The team also takes care of all bookings, guest communication and multi-channel marketing on their long-established website as well as other leading platforms, while

offering a flexible model that allows owners to remain as involved as they wish.

Every property is treated as a one-off. There’s no reliance on algorithms, no drive for sheer volume. Instead, the focus is on quality, trust and long-term relationships. Many guests return year after year, drawn by the consistently high levels of service and the authentic Cornish experience that the agency works hard to provide.

For holiday home owners looking for a more personal partnership, one built on local knowledge, transparency and a proven track record, Cornish Traditional Cottages offers something different. It is not just a letting agency, but a longstanding part of Cornwall’s tourism story, offering stability, support and a sense of place that continues to endure.

A season of OPPORTUNITY

Industry insights into Cornwall’s holiday letting scene from the experts at Cornish Cottage Holidays.

With over 50 years of local expertise, Cornish Cottage Holidays continues to lead the way in the South West’s holiday letting market. Managing more than 800 self-catering properties across Cornwall – from chic coastal apartments to charming countryside barn conversions – the agency is seeing strong demand across all corners of the county.

As part of the national organisation Sykes Holiday Cottages, the agency is pleased to share industry insights from the group’s 2025 Staycation Index which showed that 63% of Brits are planning a UK break this year, with 34% making it their main holiday.

Domestic tourism is forecast to contribute a staggering £24 billion to the UK economy this summer and Cornwall is right at the heart of it, ranking as the second most popular region in the UK for bookings so far in 2025.

Recent booking trends show that in Cornwall, family holidays dominate summer searches, accounting for 47% of all enquiries. Couples follow at 34%, with a noticeable spike in demand for early September breaks when schools return and adult groups seek a quieter escape. For holiday home owners, offering flexible layouts that appeal to multiple guest types is proving more important than ever.

Cornwall also boasts the highest income per holiday in the UK. Whilst short breaks are on the rise, now making up 31.6% of bookings, Cornwall still holds the longest average stay in the UK at 6.7 days, reflecting its appeal as a destination worth the journey.

However, Cornish Cottage Holidays isn’t just about great getaways, it’s about giving back. This year, the team has launched a children’s art competition in support of their 2025 charity of the year, Cornwall Air Ambulance. The challenge? Design a dream holiday home for the charity’s helicopter mascot, Heli. One lucky winner will receive a £500 holiday voucher and all donations will be matched pound for pound by the agency. To enter or learn more, visit cornishcottageholidays. co.uk/blog/cornwall-air-ambulance.

Memory in

METAL

Reimagining heirlooms, creating future classics and curating timepieces with exacting care.

At the Jewellery Workshop in Porthleven, items of personal significance are given a second life.

A worn ring, a faded necklace, or a well-loved bracelet may arrive tarnished or broken, but they leave restored, reworked or completely reimagined. Using traditional techniques and modern tools, the team transforms heirloom gold into contemporary designs that retain the emotional value of the original. Even details like sand from a meaningful beach can be pressed into the metal, creating a permanent link to a specific time or place.

The workshop also stocks a regularly changing collection of pre-owned jewellery, carefully selected for its quality and character. Alongside these vintage finds are new collections by independent UK makers, including a distinctive range of titanium jewellery. Lightweight, hypoallergenic and highly durable, each piece is anodised to a vibrant colour using an electric current –an eye-catching and practical alternative to traditional materials.

In addition to jewellery, the workshop is Cornwall’s only stockist of Zeppelin, Bauhaus and Bauhaus Aviation watches. These German-made models are available in both quartz and mechanical versions, with a focus on clean design and excellent engineering. Marking the milestone year

Celebrating twenty-five years in business, Porthminster Gallery has established its own distinctive space, and nearing two decades in St Ives, the gallery has built a reputation through consistency, clarity of purpose, aligned with a keen curatorial eye.

Founded in York by David Durham and Dee Bray-Calvert, both with backgrounds in arts and education, the business started with two small galleries and sculpture gardens. From the beginning, there was a focus on quality, not only in the artworks displayed but also in how they were chosen, presented, and discussed. By the time the couple relocated to St Ives in 2007, they had already formed strong connections with the region’s artistic heritage. Their first exhibition in Cornwall, aptly titled New Beginnings, marked a confident shift in direction.

Since then, Porthminster Gallery has hosted more than 160 exhibitions, championed over 90 living artists, and steadily acquired

an international collector base. This year’s anniversary exhibition brings together contemporary names with 20th-century St Ives and Modern British artists – among them Sandra Blow, Terry Frost, David Hockney and Barbara Hepworth.

David’s academic foundation in curating and Dee’s eye for accessibility have shaped a gallery that neither panders nor postures. The result is a space that treats art seriously without excluding its audience. Their 25th anniversary show opens 13th September and includes works available under the Own Art scheme, continuing their long-standing commitment to collectors old and new.

Walk among nature’s wonders

One of the Great Gardens of Cornwall, and home to a beautiful collection of magnolias, camellias and the Rhododendron Kurume Azalea Wilson 50 collection, Trewidden is a fascinating Cornish garden to visit.

In a 15-acre plot set in an ancient open-cast tin mine known as Trewidden Bal, here is the perfect setting for the garden’s most dramatic feature; the Tree Fern Pit. Planted by Thomas Bedford Bolitho, who inherited Trewidden in 1890 from his father Edward, this group of Dicksonia antarctica were some of the first to be brought to Britain more than 100 years ago.

Other horticultural wonders among Trewidden’s labyrinth of sheltered paths include ‘champion’ specimens of the Jelly Palm, Butia capitata, as well as the Dawn Redwood, Metasequoia glyptostrobodies Relics of the sites industrial past lie in the south-facing garden; large tin smelting kettles are now used as mini water gardens and a host for Cape Pondweed, Aponogeton distachyos. Step foot in this beautifully curated garden and you never know what you might find!

IMS Prussia Cove: outstanding classical concerts

Founded in 1972, the International Musicians Seminar (IMS) Prussia Cove has been bringing exceptional, world-class classical musicians to west Cornwall for over 50 years.

Dedicated to music-making at the highest level, IMS Prussia Cove holds two three-week seminars each year: a Masterclass Seminar in the spring, and the Open Chamber Music seminar in September. During this seminar, over 120 of today’s best musicians, drawn from across the world, are invited to study, rehearse and perform together in chamber groups that mix

young emerging artists with more established performers. The standard is exceptionally high, with musicians including Steven Isserlis (pictured), Thomas Adès and Sally Beamish. The musicians give public concerts every weekend during September, with free tickets for under 25s. EEscape to paradise IN A DAY

Discover the Isles of Scilly with Isles of Scilly Travel.

asy to reach but impossible to forget, the Isles of Scilly are a world away from everyday life. These spectacularly beautiful islands, situated just 28 miles off the coast of Cornwall, are surely the jewel in the UK’s crown. Wild and unspoilt, each of the five inhabited islands that make up the archipelago has its own touch of magic.

Think secluded beaches, captivating scenery and wonderful wildlife. Fondly known as “Scilly” by locals, the islands are close enough to visit for just a day – as thousands of people do each year. And thanks to Isles of Scilly Travel, getting there is easier, quicker and more flexible than ever.

With regular services from Penzance and Land’s End, you can tailor the perfect day trip to suit your style – whether you prefer the relaxed pace of a sea voyage aboard the iconic Scillonian III, the speed and thrill of a Skybus

flight, or a unique Fly+Sail combination that gives you the best of both worlds. And what’s more, dogs are welcome on both Scillonian III and Skybus, so your four-legged friends can be part of the fun!

A

firm favourite with island-goers for over 40 years, the Scillonian III passenger ferry offers an unforgettable sea journey from Penzance to the Isles of Scilly in around two hours and 45 minutes and costs just £35 per adult for a day trip. With panoramic views of Cornwall’s coastline and potential sightings of dolphins, puffins and seals, the voyage is an experience in itself.

The ship departs in the morning and returns in the late afternoon, perfect timing for a full day of island exploring. Grab a coffee on board, relax on deck, and breathe in the salty sea air as you cruise towards St Mary’s, the largest of the islands.

It’s a journey that starts your day trip off on a relaxing note, leaving the hustle behind and easing you into the unspoiled rhythm of island life.

Pressed for time or craving a little extra thrill? Hop aboard Skybus and touch down in paradise in as little as 15 minutes from Land’s End Airport.

Flying low over the Atlantic, Skybus offers unbeatable aerial views of the coast and the glittering archipelago. It’s not just a means of transport, it’s a scenic adventure that sets the tone for a truly memorable day. And with multiple departures daily, you can fit a surprising amount of Scilly magic into just a few hours.

Why choose between air and sea when you can enjoy both? Isles of Scilly Travel’s Fly+Sail option lets you fly out to the islands in the morning and return via ferry in the evening – or vice versa. This flexible combination maximises your time on the Isles of Scilly while giving you two unique travel experiences in one.

Imagine taking a bird’s-eye view of the Cornish coast as you glide toward the islands in the morning, spending your day discovering empty beaches, sampling local fare, or hiring a bike to tour St Mary’s and then unwinding on board Scillonian III as you cruise back to the mainland, the sun setting behind you.

So, what can you do in a day on the Isles of Scilly? Plenty. Start with a stroll around Hugh Town, explore the tropical gardens of Tresco Abbey (just a short boat hop away), or dip your toes in the clear, calm waters of Porthcressa or Pelistry Bay. Enjoy fresh seafood in a local café, browse independent shops and galleries, or simply sit with a pasty and soak up the scene.

The Isles of Scilly offer a slower pace and a wilder, more natural beauty than anywhere else in the UK. In just one day, you can feel a million miles away – rested, recharged, and inspired to come back.

Isles of Scilly Travel makes it simple to plan your perfect island day out. With a choice of travel modes and convenient departure times, you can create an itinerary that fits seamlessly into your schedule. Whether you’re based in Cornwall or visiting from further afield, there’s a travel option that works for you.

A taste of THE TIDE

Discovering West Cornwall; where adventure meets plate.

West Cornwall wears its edges with pride and is a place shaped by tides and tin. Whether you walk it, swim it, or taste your way through it, you’ll understand why chefs and adventure-seekers keep coming back to this wild corner of Cornwall. Start in Zennor, a moorland village wrapped in granite and myth. From here, take the coast path toward St Ives. It’s no gentle stroll – this is a fourhour scramble over rocks and heather, with the Atlantic roaring below and gannets slicing overhead. It’s raw, it’s wild and it feeds the soul.

Head south to explore the ancient mines at Carn Galver, marvel at the cliff castle at Bosigran or dip into the crystal-clear waters at Nanjizal cove. Its mystical Song of the Sea Cave can be found at its southern end – time it right and you’ll have it all to yourself.

A little further west, Cape Cornwall near St Just offers a quieter counterpart to Land’s End. Climb to the top and breathe in the vastness; from here the sea looks endless and the cliffs feel like the edge of the world.

Over on the Lizard Peninsula, the mood softens. The coast winds through serpentine cliffs and wildflower-covered paths. Walk from Kynance Cove to Lizard Point and you’ll pass turquoise waters and puffins in spring. Inland, Frenchman’s Creek on the Helford River offers one of the most peaceful kayaking experiences you’ll find – all dappled light, ancient oaks and kingfishers.

However, Cornwall isn’t just something you look at, it’s something you taste, and West Cornwall, in particular, is where land and sea meet on the plate with honesty and heart.

In the fishing port of Newlyn, the boats land mackerel, monkfish, turbot and brill straight from the Atlantic. At Mackerel Sky Seafood Bar, there are no frills, just punchy plates served fast and fresh. The crab nachos and hake tempura are a must.

Just along the quay, Argoe delivers firecooked seafood with depth and simplicity. Fish is grilled over charcoal, paired with ferments and wild herbs. It’s food with backbone. In St Ives, Porthminster Café rises above the beach, delivering Asian-inflected dishes like coconut fish curry or tamarindglazed mackerel, all with an unbeatable sea view. Over on Porthmeor Beach, the café of the same name does casual better than most – coffee at sunrise, small plates at sunset, surfers in between.

The Gurnard’s Head, perched above the cliffs near Zennor, serves up rustic elegance. Roasts by the fire, fish straight from the quay and puddings that make you pause. It’s a place to warm your boots and reset your bearings. In Penzance, The Shore is quietly brilliant – a one-chef tasting menu that’s deeply seasonal and always thoughtful. Kombu-cured fish, foraged elderberries, wild mushroom broths – it’s restrained, grounded, and quietly thrilling. Down in Mousehole, The Old Coastguard is where you go to slow down. Set above the harbour with a garden that rolls into the sea, the food is bright and coastal – roast cod with samphire, fresh crab, or a Sunday lunch that fills more than your stomach.

Further east, the harbour town of Porthleven has become a food destination in its own right. It’s here I’ve put down roots – culinary and personal. At Kota, I bring together my heritage – Mãori foraging, Chinese-Malaysian spice, and Cornish produce – on every plate. It’s a cultural balancing act I’ve lived my whole life, and it shows in the food. Whether it’s small plates, or tasting menus, it’s always grounded in flavour, family and place.

Down the road, Kota Kai offers a more relaxed way in – bold small plates, sea views and a menu built for sharing. The scallops are a standout, seared perfectly and served with delicate Asian-inspired accompaniments that sing of the sea and spice. Bring the kids, bring the dog, bring an appetite. The crispy squid, Korean fried chicken, massaman chicken curry and Vietnamese spiced pork chop have become local favourites – and yes, the inspiration comes straight from the kitchen I grew up in. And don’t miss The Ship Inn, one of the best pubs in Cornwall – low beams, open fire and a seafood chowder that hits the spot after a stormy walk.

For a proper Cornish pasty, Ann’s Pasties and Gear Farm Pasties are a must-try; hand-made, full of local meat and vegetables and baked fresh daily. They’re a perfect companion for a coastal walk or a quick, satisfying lunch. And for a sweet treat, Roskilly’s ice-cream is a West Cornwall favourite, scooping rich, creamy flavours that make a perfect summer treat after a day on the beach or exploring the moors. And of course, don’t miss Moomaid of Zennor. Their sea salt and pepper flavour is dangerously good and can be found in shops and cafes across West Cornwall.

Beach walk TO SPIRIT LEGACY

A story of a simple idea that fermented into a Cornish success story.

Rock Distillery began with a simple stroll along Rock beach, accompanied by a much-loved dog named Blue. What started as a conversation on the sand has since grown into a remarkable collection of spirits. Today, darling Blue has been succeeded by the ever-brilliant BluToo, and the distillery has expanded from one signature gin to an entire range spanning gins, rums, whiskies, vodkas and brandies.

The inspiration behind it all? A love of the perfect dry martini. Angie’s go-to drink led her and George to begin crafting their own gin. That story has now come full circle with the launch of Rock’s Very Special Extra Dry Vermouth, created to deliver the ultimate martini experience. Rock now boasts ten

distinctive gins, each dry and sugar-free, designed to work beautifully in a martini.

Pink Rock, Classic White and Mellow Yellow offer a full-bodied flavour ideal for a classic serve, while Cornish Gold creates the perfect Dirty Martini. Almond Air, meanwhile, provides a unique twist – dry on the palate but leaving a gentle sweetness of almonds on the finish. Of course, the vermouth-to-gin ratio remains a matter of personal preference.

To complement the gins in warmer months, Rock Distillery created Lemongino and Orangino – vibrant gin-based liqueurs that bring a burst of summer to any glass. Perfect over tonic or sparkling water, they also shine when topped with Champagne or Prosecco for something celebratory.

The rum collection has grown to fifteen expressions, each with its own character. At the refined end of the spectrum are True Taste – a 57% Navy Strength white rum – and Victory Dark, a glorious five-year-old aged in oak barrels. Sweeter varieties such as Tropics Mango and Passionfruit and Coconut Paradise make instant cocktails, while the latest addition, Cornish Rock Chocolate Orange, is rich, indulgent, and already a firm favourite.

In 2023, Rock Distillery launched its Cornish Rock Single Malt Whisky. Remarkably complex for a three-year-old spirit, it’s a whisky that holds its own when sipped neat or with just a splash of water to release its flavours. It also forms the base for three whisky liqueurs. Cornish Rock Peanut Whisky Liqueur is smooth and distinctive; delicious straight up, poured over ice cream, or stirred into coffee. For summer, the distillery offers a refreshing Whisky Sour made with fresh lemons and pink grapefruit, while the colder months call for Rock Whisky Warmer, infused with Cornish honey and ginger, a soothing dram whether taken medicinally or simply for pleasure.

Vodka is not forgotten. The original Cornish Rock Classic Vodka is cut with crystal-clear Cornish spring water and intended to be kept in the freezer, ready to serve chilled in a shot glass. It’s clean and smooth, the perfect base for further exploration. The Toffee Vodka Liqueur that followed has proved especially popular, combining the warmth of toffee with the purity of the spirit. This was followed by Cornish Rock Watermelon Vodka Liqueur and Pink Grapefruit Vodka Liqueur, both refreshing and unique when mixed with rosé Champagne or Prosecco.

The final chapter in Rock Distillery’s story so far is its brandy range. Cornish Rock Apple Brandy is double-distilled from Bramley apples and matured in oak, offering depth and complexity.

Next came Cornish Rock Brandysnap, a decadent blend of caramelised honeycomb and rich caramel. Cornish Rock Orange Breeze followed, bringing together sweet and bitter oranges with smooth Cornish brandy and spring water. Cornish Rock Vanilla Delight lives up to its name, made from fresh vanilla pods, spring water and mellow brandy. Finally, Cornish Rock Apricot Fusion completes the liqueur range, a tantalising blend of whole apricot, smooth brandy and fresh Cornish water.

All of Rock Distillery’s creations are available to try in-store at one of their six tasting stations. In Cornwall, visitors are welcomed in Bude, Tintagel, Wadebridge and Padstow. Further afield, the shops in Dartmouth and Corsham offer the same indulgent experience. The full collection is also available online.

Achieving balance

AND DIRECTION

Hannah Gold offers human kindness that seeks only its own reward.

Hannah Gold’s approach to coaching has been forged through experience. Originally a commissioned artist, she later trained in NLP, before stepping into a life that brought her closer to the extremes of life, where stress and dealing with both ends of the human condition were occupational necessities. It’s this grounding, this lived insight of what it means to have to keep going under pressure, that informs her work today.

She offers one-to-one sessions that draw on both her creative and professional past, as well as a respect for process. This is not the kind of coaching that insists on ‘goal-setting’ or charts a strict motivational arc. Instead, she works with how people think and communicate with themselves, and how they might learn to do so in a kinder fashion. She encourages clients to draw from within, using metaphor, imagery and the power of creativity to move forward – not through rehearsed breakthroughs, but through spatial shifts in energy and understanding. Her book, Into the Whispering Wild, sets out this philosophy in full. It is both personal and practical, rooted in the idea that self, spirit and nature are not separate, but inextricably linked. From her home on the Lizard

peninsula, she draws on this connection with the natural world to support her clients, never prescribing, never pushing, but offering simple tools and exercises that help them access the clarity already within.

Hannah’s sessions can involve art, writing, voice work, or simply a new way of thinking. She runs workshops in confidence building, stress relief and well-being, based upon techniques for reconnecting to nature, as outlined in her book. For those who are blocked or burned out, her creativity coaching offers a means to reconnect with their own problem-solving instinct. She offers a content-free approach that focuses on process, rather than the pain of having to dig up and relive the past.

Always calm, always grounded, her work meets people where they are. It is informed wisdom. She is a guide, someone who believes that when we reclaim our creative energy, we also recover our direction.
