Tourists – to tax or not to tax?

Katie Warren, of Fixer Property & Management, offers her expert knowledge on the Cornish tourism industry and an overall opinion of a potential tourist levy coming to Cornwall for those offering short term accommodation such as hotels or self-catering properties.

The Tourist Tax or Visitor Levy is typically a charge which will be placed on visitors per night, per occupied bed. It is something that other areas in the UK are already introducing, as a way of easing financial pressures on local authorities and the impact of tourism.

There is hope that the monies could go towards Cornwall’s infrastructure used by tourists, as well as supporting local businesses that are reliant on the trade – putting funds towards making tourism sustainable and all year round.

For us in the industry, it does come at a time when there has been a drop in tourist numbers, a huge amount of expensive policy to implement and we do not wish to make Cornwall less affordable or desirable to visit. Looking at how the tourist tax

A diary date for all the family this autumn

Falmouth’s Oyster Festival returns to Events Square from 9th to 12th October 2025 with a bold new look and refreshed programme. Celebrating the start of the dredging season, this free four-day event champions the native Fal Oyster and the traditional sail-and-oar methods used by Falmouth’s oystermen for over a century.

Devoted to the mighty mollusc, the festival also serves to spotlight the traditional methods of harvesting, using only sail and oar on Falmouth’s working boats – a practise

which local oysterman have perfected for over a century.

Postponed in 2024 to ensure its longterm future, the festival returns under new trustees, with events at both Events Square and Princess Pavilion. Expect favourites like the shucking competition and chef demos, plus new food ad drink masterclasses, feasts, family activities and live music.

is operating in Scotland, it is a complex levy system, which has left many booking operators struggling with the application, and some of the smaller Scottish Councils deciding not to implement at this time. While the sentiment of a tourist levy is not objected against, there are deep concerns the money will not go to the areas needed (for example the Second Home Council Tax premium has not been ringfenced for housing) and that now is not the time to add further impact to local businesses and local jobs, which could be directly affected by another tax. We would suggest Cornwall Council pause any decision making until proper impact assessments have taken place, and perhaps we all see how the tax plays out in other areas.

Bringing calm to the chaos

Professional declutterer Victoria Clark has some top tips when it comes to getting your house in order. “Get all the family involved,” she advises, “tidying is not just a parent’s job. Even little ones can help with simple tasks like sorting laundry or putting soft toys in a basket. Use low shelving, labelled baskets and clear boxes so children can access and put away their own toys and books.”

Victoria also suggests breaking the habit of one big tidy-up by making it part of the routine: a five-minute tidy after meals, before bed, or after each play session helps keep chaos from building up. Creating zones that make sense to everyone at home, can really help; a play zone, a reading corner, even a craft corner (if you dare!). When everything has a place, tidying becomes quicker.

Creating memorable stays

The team is always ready to welcome prospective holiday home owners so, if you’re looking at your options, why not consider a move to one of Cornwall’s best letting agents? But don’t just take our word for it, our readers and subscribers think so too.

On the WATER

Finding fun in the sun this summer with inclusive watersport adventures across the Duchy.

Sailing on the Helford with CST

ABOVE 

There’s something special about the Cornish waterline in summer, whether that be coastal or lakeside. On calm days the water can look almost oily it’s so smooth and as you glide over it on a paddleboard the crystal-clear ocean falls away like a painting below you, fronds of seaweed gently swaying in the current. When the wind blows, the surface of the sea comes alive with white horses bouncing across Cornwall’s bays. Hoisting a sail and scudding across the sea brings sheer delight on such days.

I was lucky enough to have grown up by the sea; it was both my playground and sportsground. When my own children were old enough to enjoy the water, they began their ocean adventures with Children’s Sailing Trust (CST). The Helford, with its ancient oaks dipping their limbs into the river and herons lifting lazily from the banks, was where they learnt to rig, tack and jibe! Over the years, CST (www. childrenssailingtrust.org.uk) has evolved into so much more than simply a sailing school. It has become a sanctuary of sorts, where children of all backgrounds and abilities can take the helm, often for the first time.

Founded in 1997 by the late John Green MBE, who wanted every child to experience the freedom of sailing on the Helford River, CST has always believed that access to the water should be a right, not a privilege. Nearly three decades on, the charity has grown into a dynamic and multifaceted operation. At its helm today is a passionate team of educators, instructors and changemakers, led by CEO Jakie Jewell, who understand that when a child steps aboard a boat, something shifts – confidence rises, curiosity blooms and independence takes root.

Seeing the possibilities that a still-water lake could bring alongside their Helford base, CST bought an ex-quarry and transformed it into the spring-fed, freshwater centre of watersports excellence it is today. Trevassack opened to the public in October 2021 and is unique in its fully accessible design. With level paths, hoists and adaptive equipment, the site was created with inclusion at its core. CST Experiences, the charity’s social enterprise arm, offers tailored sessions for children and adults with disabilities, complex needs, or simply those who’ve never had the chance to try watersports before. The profits from these sessions are reinvested into CST’s charitable work, funding schools’ sailing and lakeside learning sessions.

The secret lake at Trevassack has been kept as natural as possible, and its fully accessible design means everyone is welcome. Owned by the CST, activities are run by CST Experiences and include sailing, paddle sports, wild swimming, events and venue hire for birthdays, group meet-ups and even accessible weddings with well-being classes such as yoga and pilates held in the lakeside function room. There’s even a dog-friendly lakeside café for refuelling after being out on the water. Just a stone’s throw from the water, Trevassack Holidays is CST’s exclusive collection of six accessible holiday properties, all with hot tubs set on their deck.

The site is Gold award-winning for Accessibility and Inclusivity, being entirely wheelchair and SEND-friendly, including the water. For children who might struggle in a traditional classroom, a sailing boat becomes a very different kind of learning space. The water has an extraordinary levelling effect; CST is not just about building skills, but also building lives.

Moving from coast to country, South West Lakes Trust (www.swlakestrust.org.uk) oversees 40 inland waters across Cornwall, Devon and Somerset and Dorset, providing unrivalled access to watersports, angling, walking and cycling. These are places you can be active or play and explore all day long. Stithians Lake is one of their crown jewels. It’s the largest inland water in west Cornwall, and offers something for everyone, whether that’s casting a line, walking its footpaths, discovering the wildlife or getting out on the water. With a café and camping, the lake is both a hub of activity and a peaceful escape.  Watersports on offer include winging and efoiling, windsurfing, paddleboarding and kayaking. You can launch your own equipment or take advantage of on-site equipment hire and instructor-led sessions. Stithians also runs a full summer holiday activity programme which includes RYA courses. There’s a thread that runs through both CST and South West Lakes Trust – a belief that the water doesn’t just belong to Cornwall, but that Cornwall belongs to the water and that means everyone should be welcomed in. As we move through an era of increasing digital fatigue and screen-based living, the role of these charities is more vital than ever. They offer not just an escape, but a reconnection to nature, to others and to self. So, whether it’s the salty tang of the sea or the bracing splash from a lake, Cornwall’s waters are calling.

Penzance – coastal wonders

Cornwall’s most westerly station is the gateway to an ocean paradise. The town is a short walk from the station with a host of independent shops and eateries just waiting to be explored. Head a little further out of town and you’ll be rewarded with Jubilee Pool. This art-deco sea-water lido is the largest of its kind in the UK and has been restored to its former glory with the addition of a geothermal warm-water pool.

No trip to Penzance would be complete without a visit to the iconic St Michael’s Mount. If you enjoy a walk, there’s a level coastal path that leads to Marazion or it’s just a short bus or taxi ride away. At low tide, the cobbled causeway takes you to the Mount – a place of myth and legend – where

you can explore historic village streets and the legendary ramparts of the castle. At high tide, a boat trip will return you back to shore, where the Godolphin Arms awaits, for much deserved refreshment.

Truro – culture in the capital Cornwall’s capital city is a haven for shopping and culture alike. Truro Cathedral stands sentinel and its iconic spires can be seen as you alight from the train. It’s just a 12 to 15-minute walk from the station and with tours available, this is a wonderful opportunity to experience its incredible architecture and stained-glass windows in the most peaceful of settings.

The Cornwall Museum and Gallery has recently been reimagined for the 21st Century and houses art, objects and artefacts that tell the story of the life and people of the Duchy in days gone by. Expertly curated exhibitions sit alongside permanent collections and there are plenty of interactive activities to keep the whole family happy.

Falmouth Town – maritime history by the sea

After visiting Truro, take the train along the branch line to Falmouth. Just a fiveminute walk from the station, the National Maritime Museum Cornwall offers an enriching dive into the region’s seafaring past. Discover exhibits that illuminate Cornwall’s deep connection to the sea in this modern, family-friendly museum.

St Ives – Britain’s most scenic rail journey

Hop on at St Erth for one of the most beautiful train rides in the UK. The St Ives Bay Line hugs the coast past sweeping beaches like Hayle Towans and Carbis Bay before arriving at St Ives. The station sits right next to Porthminster Beach, and it’s a short stroll to the vibrant town centre, with its harbour, galleries and celebrated eateries.

Newquay – surf and scenery

Travel to Newquay from Par via a route that takes in the lush Luxulyan Valley and wide-open vistas of Goss Moor. Just minutes from the station lies Great Western Beach, perfect for a spontaneous dip or surf session. With the station located centrally, everything is easy to reach – no need to worry about traffic or parking.

Liskeard – a unique Cornish story

A short taxi ride from Liskeard Station brings you to one of Cornwall’s newest and most thought-provoking attractions. The Story of Emily tells the tale of Emily Hobhouse, a remarkable humanitarian. Set in a beautifully restored Victorian rectory in St Ive, this immersive experience offers powerful storytelling, historical exhibits, and a restaurant serving South African-inspired cuisine.

St Austell – gardens of wonder

From St Austell Station, take a direct bus to one of the UK’s most iconic attractions. This summer at the Eden Project, discover the wonders of “Enchanted Earth” — from microscopic marvels to cosmic mysteries. Enjoy family-friendly activities, explore the famous Biomes and immerse yourself in one of the world’s largest indoor rainforests.

Just five miles from St Austell Station by taxi, the Lost Gardens of Heligan are a dreamlike retreat. Once forgotten, these gardens have been lovingly restored to reveal 200 acres of exotic plants, ancient woodlands, and peaceful pathways. A must-visit for nature lovers and romantics alike.

Explore Cornwall by train this Summer. Your adventure starts the minute you jump onboard.

SAVINGSSummer solar

The holy trinity that will help slash your bills –solar, storage and airsource heating solutions.

GreenGenUK brings a polished blend of solar photovoltaic panels, battery storage and airsource heating to homes across Cornwall and Devon, offering remarkable summer savings. Since 2011, this MCScertified installer has earned plaudits through rigorous standards, awardwinning projects and glowing customer reports, reassuring homeowners that professionalism and quality lie at the heart of every engagement.

The company’s focus during the sunnier months is clear: harness high output from summer solar PV systems and store surplus energy in batteries, allowing households to reduce grid dependence long after the sun sets. Tailored installations – often combining a 6 kW array with 9-10 kWh storage – ensure that clean energy flows into homes during peak demand, lowering bills and locking in long-term value.

GreenGenUK’s airsource heat pumps operate alongside this system to deliver heating with efficiency ratings exceeding 300 %, offering significant year-round savings. Those installations take advantage of up to £7,500 in government incentives via the Boiler Upgrade Scheme, making a compelling financial case alongside environmental benefits.

GreenGenUK’s approach is a consultative one. Customers receive a free site visit and in-depth home survey, during which heatloss calculations and bespoke energy plans are developed. From then on, guidance continues throughout system design and installation under expert supervision,

shaping a service that feels reassuring, not pushy. Reviews on Trustpilot and Google regularly describe the team as “professional, reliable and knowledgeable”, reinforcing the company’s reputation.

One recent project near Exeter typifies this rounded strategy: a 6 kW Mitsubishi airsource heat pump paired with a 12-panel PV array and 9.5 kWh battery is forecast to generate 4,700 kWh of solar energy annually, offsetting around 90 % of on-site use and saving hundreds of pounds each year. Over 25 years, this installation is expected to cut emissions by over 20 tonnes of CO2 and reduce annual energy costs by more than £500.

For anyone keen to redress rising energy costs and exert more control over household bills, GreenGenUK offers a clear pathway. Its skilled team in Helston and Exeter delivers renewable energy technology anchored in reliable workmanship, certified standards and genuine customer care. Readers are warmly encouraged to get in touch for a no-obligation quote, so they can begin saving from day one and take practical control of their summer energy usage.

Every CLOUD…

Or every gust of wind in this instance.

Following the severe winds brought by Storm Darragh in December 2024, Gardens Made Easy (exclusive Colourfence Trade Partner), experienced a surge in enquiries from homeowners whose fences had been damaged or destroyed. Among them was a customer near Plymouth who found that half his garden had suddenly opened up to his neighbours!

Olly Daglish, founder of Gardens Made Easy, visited the property to assess the situation. The client hoped to continue a line of fencing along the garden’s boundary, but Olly quickly identified a significant issue: a rotten raised deck at the lower end of the garden. Without addressing this, any new fencing would lack the structural support it needed. Olly recommended removing and replacing the deck before installing the new boundary.

This initial visit marked the start of a more ambitious collaboration. The homeowner, David, was already working with builders on a new raised patio area, and over time, the plans evolved. After considering various options, David opted for two-metre-high fencing in a striking blue finish, paired with Colourrail railings along the garden’s lower edge. The site presented further challenges.

The garden sloped steeply, meaning the new fence had to be carefully stepped, with panels at the bottom raked to follow the ground’s contours. In areas with the greatest height variation, Gardens Made Easy supplied extralong posts to ensure stability and a clean finish. By spring 2025, the transformation was complete. What had begun as a response to storm damage became a full garden makeover, combining visual impact, long-term security and maintenance-free durability, thanks to the Colourfence system and the expertise of Gardens Made Easy.

Based in Cornwall, Gardens Made Easy specialise in supplying and installing Colourfence and Colourrail products, fencing solutions designed to withstand winds of up to 130mph, with no painting or repairs for up to 25 years. Their approach is consultative, friendly, and meticulous, ensuring that every job, whether a simple fence or a multi-phase redesign, is delivered to an exacting standard. For homeowners who want peace of mind as well as kerb appeal, Gardens Made Easy provides both.

A celebration of a British pop artist in St Ives

Porthminster Gallery in St Ives marks a milestone this summer with a special showcase of The Venice Suite by Sir Peter Blake, opening 25th June 2025 – the artist’s 93rd birthday – and running until 28th July.

Created in 2009, The Venice Suite is a portfolio of 20 limited edition silkscreen prints, each signed and numbered by Blake, with just 75 sets produced. Of these, only 50 were presented as complete portfolios, making this a rare opportunity to view individual works from the series, some of which have never before been exhibited in Cornwall.

On display are framed prints including Butterflies , Dancing , Dredging , Fishing , Iceberg I and Regatta . The suite is a joyful and surreal take on Venice, rooted in Blake’s 2007 visit to the city for the Biennale. Romantic and dreamlike, the compositions blend classic Venetian motifs with imagery from vintage children’s books, wartime ephemera and old postcards. In Blake’s hands, gondolas pass giant penguins, rowers share the canal with bombers and architectural landmarks shimmer in soft greys, golds and turquoise.

Playful and poetic, the prints reimagine the city as a stage for fantastical encounters, revealing the wit and invention that have long defined Blake’s practice. These works offer not only a tribute to Venice but

Legacy of the north coast

From 21 August to 27 September, Terre Verte Gallery in Altarnun presents a captivating retrospective drawn from the studio legacies of Henry Israel and Caeria Strong, pioneers of the North Cornwall Seven. Both artists relocated to North Cornwall in the 1960s, establishing a smallholding and studio where they developed a rich and varied body of work, from portraits and figure studies to still lifes, abstracts and landscapes – all deeply rooted in their experience of place.

also a reflection of the artist’s enduring fascination with nostalgia, memory and the absurd.

A central figure in post-war British art, Sir Peter Blake rose to prominence in the 1960s and is widely regarded as the Godfather of British Pop Art. Knighted in 2002, his influence spans generations and his work is held in major public collections around the world. This showcase offers a compelling glimpse into the imaginative world of one of Britain’s most beloved artists.

For more information, visit www.porthminstergallery.co.uk or call 01736 795888.

This rare exhibition showcases paintings and drawings created in their residual studio, offering an intimate glimpse into the creative process of two visionaries whose work inspired generations of artists to live and paint in this evocative region.

Since its founding in 2014, Terre Verte has become a dynamic hub for contemporary art, hosting themed exhibitions throughout the year.

Don’t miss this chance to experience the vibrant legacy and artistic heritage these two figures brought to North Cornwall.

Landscapes transformed by light

Self-taught and originally from the Midlands, Diane Griffiths relocated to Newquay in 2017. Now working parttime as a professional artist, her work is exhibited in galleries across the UK as well as online.

In 2024, she won ‘The People’s Choice Award’ in The British Art Prize and is currently a top 50 finalist in the SAA Artists of the Year 2025. Her latest series, The Colour of Night, explores the transformative power of light, both natural and artificial and how it can dial up unexpected colours within a landscape. Working in a distinctive blend of acrylic, oil and enamel, she draws from life, memory and imagination to reframe the familiar and create something quietly extraordinary.

2 MARTIN JOHN FOWLER

First Light Porthleven by Martin John Fowler

Martin John Fowler’s paintings bear the weight of shifting tides – both literal and figurative. Brought up in the mining towns of South Yorkshire, he honed his craft at Doncaster and Sheffield Colleges of Art before setting out to chart Britain’s evolving landscapes. From the Scottish isles to Cornwall’s hidden coves, his work captures the uneasy dialogue between industry and wilderness. His acrylics, applied with hands and sticks, are raw, immediate and deeply felt. His paintings, drawings and prints are held in many private collections but can be viewed at the Custom House Gallery, in Porthleven. www.martinjohnfowler.com

Blue Yonder

AND BEYOND

Discovering the work of Susan Fowler; one of the country’s leading contemporary textile, pressed flower and mixed media artists.

Susan Fowler wasn’t always an artist. Whilst practising as a commercial property lawyer, she contracted meningitis which left her with a head injury and epilepsy. Uniquely, this was to be the catalyst for the start of her career as a self-taught artist. “I started to press flowers as therapy during my recovery,” says Susan. “The epilepsy also triggered an acute awareness of light, colour and texture which has now become a prominent feature of my work.” Susan’s specialism is pressed flora and seaweed, combined with textiles and mixed media. Flora is picked from her own Cornish garden or sourced from local suppliers, with windswept local seaweed foraged from Cornish shores. These are laid on luxurious silks and satins with light-catching mixed media that includes precious stones, pearls, fishing net and shells from local fishermen. “I always buy my fabric in person, whether that be in the UK or on my travels through Cyprus and Spain,” Susan explains.

Susan’s influences come from the sea, skies, water currents, sunsets, sunrises and the intricate shapes of tree branches and bark. “I’m inspired by Cornwall's coastline where there is always a place to find calm and quiet solitude, whilst at the same time being surrounded by the most powerful movements in nature.

The sea, skies, winds and life itself are always moving, changing and evolving,” adds Susan. “This feeds into my artwork, which is evocative of Cornwall’s everchanging mood, heart and soul – a place where dreams are made and creativity comes to life.”

Never one to rest on her laurels, Susan has exciting plans for the year ahead. She will be holding a solo exhibition and fundraiser for the MND Association on September 20th 2025 at Tregenna Castle, St Ives. “This ticketed event, which includes a delicious meal, will be an evening where people can spend time looking at my work and learning more about what I do. I will also be busy attending other fairs, exhibitions and book signings throughout the year as well as spending time in my home studio to work on new original artwork, where I’ll be experimenting with unique fabrics, more mixed media and also expanding my use of colour.” Latest artwork and details of events and signings can be found on Susan’s new gallery website.

THE WILD Words from

Illustrator and writer Hannah Gold draws from nature and ancestral wisdom.

There is something both luminous and grounding in the work of Hannah Gold, as if the rustle of leaves or the hush of dusk were being spoken in a language children can instinctively understand. Raised on a fare of picture books and wildflowers, Hannah was taught to read, write and draw by her mother in a way that was holistic rather than atomistic. By the time she could wield a crayon, she was already translating the world into shape and story.

Her books, The Owl and the Cactus and The Fuzzy Faced Flim Flum, pulse with colour and curiosity. Besides being entertaining, they initiate and invite young readers to walk barefoot into other worlds, to listen and to trust what they find there. Hannah’s illustrations, loose yet intentional, suggest an artist who understands that not everything worth knowing can be captured in outlines. Her animals wear expressions that lean towards dream, while her characters often straddle the familiar and the strange. It is this space between what is known and what is intuited that her stories so deftly explore.

Beyond her brush and pen, Hannah has trained in self-development and the wisdom and traditions of indigenous peoples. Rather than appropriating these perspectives, she treats them with the same reverence she gives to trees, rivers and moonlight. Her books do not lecture, they listen. They open a door through which she encourages a younger generation to hold their own place in the web of life with care and courage.

At a time when children’s publishing often veers toward noise or nostalgia, Hannah Gold offers something altogether rarer; a voice that trusts in the intelligence of children, and a vision shaped as much by ritual as by rain. Her work feels less like instruction and more like invitation, a hand held out in the undergrowth.

Her books can be purchased from her shop in Mullion or online at www.browndogbooks.uk.

It’s no wonder so many families across Wadebridge and the surrounding areas trust Kate. It’s not just her experience that reassures them, but the way she truly cares. Her calm, friendly manner and clear communication mean parents are always kept in the loop, and children feel empowered and involved in their own care.

Here are the top 3 reasons kids go to wadebridge dental for orthodontics:

1. Early intervention sets the foundation for a healthy smile

Wadebridge Dental is known for catching orthodontic issues early, often before they become more complex. Their child-friendly team provides thorough assessments from a young age, helping to spot problems like crowding, bite misalignment, or jaw development concerns. Early treatment often means shorter treatment times and better long-term outcomes.

2. Modern braces & discreet options children love

Gone are the days of clunky, uncomfortable braces. At Wadebridge Dental, children and teens can benefit from modern orthodontic solutions like Invisalign and clear aligners. These are more comfortable, easier to clean, and far less noticeable, which makes a big difference in school or social settings.

3. A friendly, supportive environment that puts children at ease

Let’s face it, a trip to the dentist can be nervewracking for children. But families trust Wadebridge Dental because the team is brilliant at making children feel safe, heard and comfortable. With a calm, welcoming environment and staff who go the extra mile, kids actually look forward to their appointments.

Looking for expert orthodontic care for your child? Book a consultation with Kate at Wadebridge Dental and start their smile journey today.

Explore the lakes on foot or by bike, let the youngsters run wild in the play areas, watch the wildlife or relax in a café with magnificent views. Dogs on leads are welcome and all three lakes have superb lakeside campsites if you want to extend your stay.

At Stithians Lake, hire water sports equipment, launch your own kit or join an instructor-led session. The Activity Centre is open for hire, launch and bespoke tuition every day from 10am to 4pm. During the school summer holidays (28 July to 29 August) you’ll find a packed programme of activities including ‘have a go’ windsurfing and sailing sessions. These two-hour sessions are a great way to try an activity for the first time with friends or family, gain basic skills and have fun. Youngsters aged eight to 16 can sign up for a multi-activity day or week to try a variety of different water sports. This could be sailing, windsurfing, kayaking, stand-up paddle boarding or raft building, depending on the weather conditions on the day! There’s also the chance to learn to wing surf or eFoil, or take part in a five-day sailing course.

Tamar Lakes, situated on the Devon and Cornwall border, features a well-maintained and accessible 5km roundlake path that is suitable for pushchairs, wheelchairs and cyclists of all abilities. You can hire water sports equipment or launch your own to explore the lake by kayak, canoe, paddleboard, boat, or swan pedalo! This service is available when the Activity Centre is open (usually Wednesday to Sunday). Recognised as one of the best fishing spots in the UK by The Times earlier this year, Upper Tamar Lake is also famed for its carp and match fishing.

Siblyback Lake is surrounded by the striking backdrop of Bodmin Moor. Hire water sports equipment or launch your own when the Activity Centre is open and experience a different view of the lake. Enjoy a scenic walk through woodland and countryside, finishing with a coffee at Olive & Co to enjoy the stunning surroundings.

South West Lakes Trust is an independent charity dedicated to caring for and enhancing the region’s reservoirs and lakes. These special places are home to wonderful wildlife, important habitats and built historic sites.

THE SEA

Cornish luxury without fuss – this is St Michaels Resort in Falmouth.

St Michaels Resort in Falmouth offers a practical mix of comfort and good service just above Gyllyngvase Beach. It caters to a broad range of guests, whether they’re visiting for a short break, a family holiday, or time out with friends. The atmosphere is relaxed but professional, and the facilities are well-maintained and thought through without being showy.

The hotel has two restaurants. Brasserie on the Bay now serves a new menu created by Stephane Delourme, who previously spent 25 years at the Rick Stein group. Dishes focus on local produce from Cornish farms and waters, prepared to a high standard. For something less formal, Nourish is a café-style space with a broad selection of lighter meals – from salads and small plates to sourdough pizzas – with plenty of options for daytime dining.

Guests can use the on-site Health Club, which includes a large gym, swimming pool, sauna, steam room and a full programme of indoor and outdoor classes. Spa facilities are also available, including a hydrotherapy pool, outdoor sauna, cold plunge, as well as a sea-view hot tub. Treatments can be booked separately, and the space is designed to be

used by day guests as well as those staying at the hotel.

The location is one of the hotel’s main advantages. Gyllyngvase Beach is just across the road, with paddleboards included as part of all room bookings. The South West Coast Path is close by, offering access to longer walks, and the town centre is within easy walking distance.

Overall, St Michaels is set up to offer a wonderful guest experience – combining good food, good leisure facilities and proximity to one of Cornwall’s most popular beaches. It suits guests who want structure without being micromanaged, and comfort without excess. Staff are attentive but not intrusive, and the range of facilities on offer means most guests can find what they need without leaving the site.

By the WATER’S EDGE

Two of Falmouth’s most iconic waterfront hotels offer a glimpse of Cornwall at it’s finest.

Some hotels succeed because of their setting. Others earn their reputation through consistency, attention to detail and the quiet confidence that comes from knowing how to look after people. The Greenbank has long done all three. Now, drawing on that experience, the team is bringing new energy to The Falmouth – a historic hotel being carefully restored with the same thoughtful approach. Both are deeply connected to the sea, and to a tradition of hospitality that feels instinctive rather than forced.

Nestled on the harbour, The Greenbank is Falmouth’s oldest established hotel still in use as a hotel. It has grown gradually, adapting to changing times without losing sight of what brings people back. Guests arrive by car, on foot and in some cases, by boat. The hotel’s private pontoon, the only one in the South West to have one directly accessed from its own listed Quay, allows those exploring the South Coast

by water to moor up and stay a while. It’s a fitting arrival, given the maritime history here. The Greenbank’s location directly overlooks the harbour and its small beach, both just steps from the door, with crabbing lines regularly lowered from the private quay. Children staying at the hotel receive a crabbing bucket as standard, and often spend hours hauling in their catch, then tipping it back with the same concentration.

Inside, the rooms make the most of the views. Harbour-facing bedrooms frame Falmouth’s working waterfront, from fishing boats to ferries, and the Water’s Edge restaurant looks directly over the water. The menu is straightforward but wellexecuted, with Cornish seafood given top billing – think scallops, mussels, crab, hake – prepared in a style that suits the setting rather than trying to outshine it.

For more relaxed dining their below decks pub, The Working Boat, offers proper pub

food and local brews. There has been a pub on the site of The Working Boat for more than 300 years. Originally used as the inn’s tap room, it was frequented by workers and locals alike. As the inn became a hotel, the pub remained and became the base for oystermen to ‘refresh’ themselves after a long day out on the boat.

The Greenbank also has a claim to literary fame. In 1907, Kenneth Grahame stayed here while writing letters to his son that would later become The Wind in the Willows. The view from his room may have changed a little since then, but the character of the harbour remains the same.

Just around the headland, The Falmouth is the town’s oldest purpose built hotel, but with a different outlook and atmosphere. Built in 1865 to serve the growing demand for seaside holidays among Victorian travellers, it has been welcoming guests ever since. The setting is impressive, right on the seafront, overlooking Castle Beach, with open views

across the bay. It’s a traditional hotel with large rooms, wide corridors, and the sort of scale that reflects its original purpose as a grand coastal getaway. Sea-view bedrooms take in the horizon, while the newly restored Castle View restaurant, bar and 1865 lounge along with the hotel’s outdoor seating area make the most of the surroundings.

Castle Beach itself is ideal for families with rockpools, shallow swimming and easy access for paddleboards, snorkels or simply a towel on the sand. For those after something more involved, dive and scuba diving options are available directly from the beach.

Events on the lawn through the summer include family archery, BBQs and live music, with the added spectacle of watching the Red Arrows during Falmouth Week. It’s an informal affair with drinks from the bar and wood benches and picnic blankets on the lawn.

Together, The Greenbank and The Falmouth offer two ways to stay in the town, depending on what you want from your time here. The former is a coastal bolthole that is refined and relaxed, whereas the latter is family and activity oriented benefiting from its close proximity to the beach. Both are well-run hotels with history behind them and a clear understanding of where they are – on the water, in Cornwall and still doing what they’ve done best.

A COASTAL GEM

British hospitality, infused with sea air and wrapped in unrivalled comfort.

Waking up on holiday – is there any feeling quite like it? No alarms. No rushing. Just the joy of being present and savouring the moment.

Now imagine waking to the shimmer of a blue sea, a salty breeze drifting through the open window, and the soft embrace of a bed dressed in luxurious linens. That, surely, is a morning to remember.

Tucked away on a secluded stretch of the Cornish coast, on the unspoilt Roseland Peninsula, stands The Nare – a five-star country house hotel by the sea. With its timeless interiors, graceful elegance, and rooms that offer some of the most breath taking sea views in the British Isles, The Nare is a true gem.

In an age drawn to minimalist design, The Nare proudly celebrates tradition, charm and warmth. However, whilst tradition is treasured, not everything at The Nare remains the same. The Quarterdeck Seafood Restaurant is The Nare’s new premier seafood restaurant, bringing contemporary flair to a classic setting. With sweeping views over Gerrans Bay, it offers a refined yet relaxed atmosphere and a menu that celebrates Cornwall’s finest coastal bounty.

From the Cornish bluefin tuna raviolo to the inspired monkfish wellington, the dishes are a true celebration of the sea.

But the crown jewel? The showstopping Fruits de Mer platter. A feast of oysters, whole lobster, crevettes, crab, mussels and scallops. Best enjoyed al fresco, paired with a chilled glass of Chablis, overlooking the glittering turquoise horizon.

Sustainability is at the heart of The Quarterdeck’s ethos. Hand-foraged ingredients like samphire, wild garlic and elderflower are used to complement the fresh, locally sourced seafood. The Nare also proudly supports ethical fishing practices through its partnership with the National Lobster Hatchery, contributing to the Buy One, Set One Free initiative.

For every lobster served, The Nare donates £1 to help raise and release baby lobsters back into local waters, helping preserve this delicacy for generations to come.

Now open for bookings, contact The Quarterdeck to reserve your sea-view table. And why not linger a little longer? Stay the night and experience classic British hospitality, infused with sea air and wrapped in unrivalled comfort.

For all the FAMILY

Cornwall is one of the UK’s top family holiday destinations.

With our dramatic coastline, golden and white sand beaches and charming seaside towns, Cornwall offers an unbeatable mix of natural beauty, adventure and family-friendly attractions.

First and foremost, the beaches are a huge draw; from Lands End to the Lizard Point, and up to Bude, families can spend long days building sand castles, paddling in the waves or trying out water sports like surfing, sea kayaking and paddle boarding. Locally in Porthleven, we have our own sandy beach and the harbour for all manner of different water sports, which also includes a family tradition of harbour jumping at high tide. Don’t forget to book Mor Holan sauna to warm up after your water sport! Fishing trips and sea kayak tours also run out of the harbour for exploring the nearby coastline. Many Cornish beaches are lifeguarded in the summer making them safe and inclusive for all ages – in fact there’s a beach for every occasion and wind direction.

Importantly, Cornwall also feels like a break from the everyday. Our slower pace, fresh sea air and wide-open landscapes help families to reconnect and spend time away from screens and routines. There’s plenty of holiday accommodation choice for all budgets, from camping and cosy cottages, to family hotels and beachside lodges. There are also lots of wonderful places to visit from charming seaside towns and quaint fishing villages to idyllic riverside locations and wind-swept cliff tops to choose from. This makes Cornwall such a fantastic place to explore for the whole family.

After exploring all day, finding somewhere to dine is the next adventure. Luckily here in Cornwall, we have many fine restaurants, cafés, pubs, bakeries and takeaways for the whole family. One of the culinary treasures made in Cornwall is the Cornish Pasty. Everyone has their favourite, but which is the best? I have two; Ann’s Pasties or Gear Farm. Both have quality ingredients in them and are made locally. I have also made my

own pasty at home which I must say was really delicious. One of the advantages of making your own is that you can buy the best possible ingredients you can source to put in them. If you look at how few ingredients go into a pasty, it is important to make sure they are all excellent and then seasoned well.

Or, how about a good old Cornish Tea in the afternoon? I love them. It’s hard to beat your own scones which have been lightly mixed and baked fresh and served warm straight from the oven. Be sure to put jam on first! Next is to top it off with your favourite Cornish clotted cream. No Cornish holiday is complete without a fish and chip supper, and when choosing where to eat one, it’s important to me to know where the fish is sourced from and whether it is sustainable.

Keeping kids and adults happy while dining at the same time can sometimes be tricky. At Kota Kai, we have been championing family dining for the last 14 years. We have endeavoured to find the balance of great food for everyone in a relaxed setting, so that the whole family can enjoy themselves. Kids have a great choice of dishes on their own menu, but there is always something on the main menu for the more adventurous children if they wish.

Kai has always been known for having Asian dishes and ingredients that have been familiar to me from childhood. Big bowls of noodles, curries and spicy salads, sit besides grilled Cornish meats, vegetarian dishes and seafood. Whether we are serving adults or children, produce is of the highest importance. We are so lucky to have our seafood caught and gathered locally with a huge variety such as mussels, oysters, scallops, squid, crab, lobsters alongside different species of fish. Meats are from the renowned Philip Warren and Son butchers, who recently won best butcher in the UK.

The dining room at Kai is on the first floor, with each table having a view of the beautiful Harbour and town. We also have an area on the green overlooking the sea that can sit up to 70 people. Happy hour is daily from 4.30pm until 6.30pm. Renowned for our delicious cocktails, there is always a funky vibe in the room. Brunch on the weekends is always a treat and is open from 10.30am until 2.30pm. On the brunch menu you will find pancakes, French toast, bagels with smoked salmon, alongside a Roti John sandwich and poached eggs with Chakalaka beans and crushed avocado. For those who are celebrating the weekend, brunch cocktails are a must with favourites being Kai Mimosa, Marmalade Paloma, Espresso Martini, and the good old Bloody Mary. Ensuring no-one is left out, dogs are welcome for lunch.

Kota has a more grown up feel to the dining room but still has a children’s menu so the whole family can enjoy themselves. We have a tasting menu alongside an à la carte and small plates menus. It’s a great place to pop in for a glass of wine and a snack, or a full-on meal. Housed in one of the oldest buildings in the harbour, the service is always relaxed and attentive. Expect the best ingredients in the area to adorn the menu with a lot of local seafood, organic vegetarian dishes, and meat dishes to excite the tastebuds along an extensive wine list. Be sure to try one of our seasonal cocktails.

WITH CHARACTER Harbour food

Casual dining, lively vendors and some of the best views in Newquay.

Situated on Newquay’s historic harbour, you’ll find The Boathouse. Besides being somewhere to grab a bite to eat, you’ll be entertained by views of fishing boats bobbing nearby and the sea just steps away. It takes the idea of a food court and gives it a distinctly Cornish twist, where a wide range of street food stalls serve everything from fresh seafood and gourmet burgers to vibrant global flavours, craft drinks and indulgent sweet treats, all enjoyed from a mix of indoor and outdoor seating, all with sweeping views of the harbour. Whether you're tucking into something delicious with sand still between your toes or listening to live music as the coastal light spills across the harbour, it’s a venue that you won’t forget in a hurry.

Many of its vendors use locally sourced ingredients, and there’s a strong emphasis on low-impact dining that consciously avoids flashy gimmicks. It’s just good food made by people who care. You feel that as soon as you arrive, everyone from the chefs to the bar staff seems to enjoy being there and what they do.

The Boathouse is a place where locals and visitors rub shoulders. So, whether you're a surfer grabbing a quick bite after a session or a family enjoying a leisurely meal, there’s a welcoming vibe that makes everyone feel at home. It’s not just about the food, it’s about the atmosphere. With its relaxed, no-fuss charm, it invites people from all walks of life to come together, share stories, and enjoy the simple pleasures of good food, great company, accompanied by stunning views.

In a town famous for surfing and nightlife, The Boathouse is a more grounded kind of magic. It’s where Newquay slows down and invites you to stay just a little longer to appreciate and take stock.

What’s more, it’s open 7 days a week, 9am –9pm, no booking required.

Summer IS CALLING

It’s time for a tipple courtesy of Rock Distillery.

With summer in full swing, Rock Distillery invites gin lovers to sit back, relax and enjoy a perfectly crafted cocktail –perhaps a classic G&T or a dry martini in the garden sunshine. Their exceptional range of gins promises to elevate any moment.

A refreshing starting point is Rock Sublime Lime, delicately infused with mint. Served with lime soda water and garnished with a sprig of mint, it creates the ultimate gin-based Mojito. For something more indulgent, Rock Almond Air offers a refined blend with a whisper of sweet almond – best paired with just enough mixer to let the subtle flavours shine.

Martini aficionados will appreciate the versatility of Rock Classic, Cornish Gold, and Rock Mellow Yellow – all ideal for creating a dry martini to personal taste, whether shaken or stirred and finished with a favourite garnish.

For those seeking something lighter during hazy afternoons, Rock Lemongino and Orangino deliver vibrant bursts of citrus. These gin-based drinks, infused with fresh lemons, oranges and tangerines, are superb served chilled – either neat or with a mixer. A splash of Champagne turns them into something truly elegant.

The distillery’s expertise extends beyond gin. Their growing range includes smallbatch Rums such as the decadent Rock Chocolate Orange, infused with dark chocolate and fresh orange. Their tripledistilled single malt whisky and whisky liqueurs – notably the Peanut Whisky – have fast become favourites. The Vodka range is equally versatile; the Toffee Apple Martini is a particular highlight.

Not to be missed are Rock’s brandy liqueurs. Brandy Snap is smooth, rich and dessertlike, while Orange Breeze marries sweet and bitter oranges with Cornish Brandy. Vanilla Delight, made with fresh vanilla pod, is creamy, custard-like and decadent, and Rock Apricot Fusion – crafted from apricot skin, pomace and kernels, then aged with a touch of oak – is full-bodied and velvety.

Founded by Angie and George Malde, the distillery’s story began with a leisurely walk along Rock Beach, accompanied by their dog, Blue. Inspired by the pure Cornish spring water and the vivid local landscape, they embarked on a mission to craft spirits.

As such, Rock Distillery exemplifies Cornwall’s evolving craft spirit culture. From thoughtful local sourcing and seasonal botanicals to playful international spice blends, their extensive portfolio, now spanning gin, rum, whisky, along with innovative liqueurs, is crafted with unwavering attention to detail. Their tasting rooms invite locals and visitors alike to explore and sip Cornwall in every bottle, ensuring each varietal remains true to its coastal roots.

All Rock Distillery spirits are 100% natural and cut with Cornish spring water. The gins are entirely sugar-free.

Here’s to a summer full of spirit – the Rock Distillery way!

THROUGH TIME

A family-friendly museum in Helston explores shipwrecks, inventions and everyday life.

The Museum of Cornish Life is housed in a former market building in the centre of Helston. Inside, visitors will find three floors of exhibits arranged across five halls, with thousands of items reflecting daily life in Cornwall over the last two centuries. On display are objects that document not just a county but a way of seeing the world: upright, ingenious and quietly eccentric.

This summer’s exhibition turns its gaze to the sea. Shipwrecks on the Lizard tells of twisted hulls and local salvage, lifeboat heroes and false lights. Among the stories is that of Henry Trengrouse, the Helstonborn inventor of a rocket-powered rescue device that helped save countless lives along the coast. The apparatus is here, displayed beside a stuffed parrot named Henry — the only survivor of a wreck that washed ashore during wartime.

But the museum is more than a resting place for artefacts. It hums with conversation and intrigue, along with the voices of volunteers who can help bring the stories to life of every scuffed enamel sign

and every dented copper kettle. Downstairs, children can dress up in the Victorian classroom. Upstairs, the old drill hall hosts Krafty Kids sessions for families, free to drop into and themed around the summer sun. The workshops run through the holidays, with Monday afternoons and Thursday mornings filled with paper, pens, glue and laughter.

There’s also a gift shop and a small café serving tea and cake. Entry is free, and the museum is open Monday to Saturday from 10 am to 4 pm. Whether it’s your first visit or you’ve been before, you’re bound to feel welcome, teased into exploring, compelled to ask questions, wanting to take time. Rather than presenting history at a distance, the museum encourages visitors to get involved and enjoy it first-hand.
