The Legacy and Future of Big Sky Bravery
Written by Allyson Keller
On September 26, 2025, Big Sky Bravery will mark a milestone ten years in the making. What began as a vision to serve those who serve at the highest level has grown into a nationally recognized nonprofit with one mission: to give back to the active duty Special Operations Forces (SOF) community in a way no one else does. These are the men and women who quietly carry the heaviest burdens. They deploy repeatedly, spend years in combat, and endure physical and psychological tolls most will never
see or understand. They serve without recognition, without fanfare, and often without pause. At Big Sky Bravery, we believe their courage deserves more than a thank you. It deserves a return. Since our founding in 2015, we’ve built life saving programs (Task Forces) rooted in trust, privacy, and purpose. From the remote peaks of Big Sky, Montana, we’ve created intentional spaces for active duty SOF members to rest, reconnect, and rediscover what’s worth living for. Our Task Forces are not retreats. They are turning points.
A Decade of Service & Expansion
Over the past ten years, we’ve seen extraordinary growth in both the number of people we serve and the depth of impact we provide. What started with a singular focus on active duty SOF males has expanded into comprehensive support for active duty females, spouses, families, and alumni. We’ve built programs that meet recipients exactly where they are in life, offering what’s needed most. Sometimes that’s solitude, sometimes friendship, adventure, or simply the permission to breathe again.
We’ve established one of the nation’s most committed alumni programs, providing long term connection and continued support well beyond a recipient’s first Task Force. This isn’t just about a week in Montana. It’s about walking alongside these warriors for the rest of their lives.
Big Sky Bravery now hosts hundreds of Task Force recipients throughout the year, each intentionally designed and deeply personal. Our programs are not one size fits all. They are built with care, executed with precision, and upheld by a team that understands the crucial experience we provide.
Who We Serve: The Active Duty Special Operations Forces (SOF) Community, Their Spouses, and Their Families
To understand our mission is to understand the people behind it. The SOF community is made up of the most elite warriors in the U.S. military. These are individuals who are hand selected, rigorously trained, and constantly deployed to some of the most dangerous missions around the globe.
Many of our recipients have served 10, 15, even 20 years, with over half a decade spent in combat zones. They’ve missed holidays, births, and funerals. They’ve buried friends. They’ve come home carrying invisible wounds and questions that don’t have easy answers. These are not broken people. They are battle tested, loyal, and proud. But they are human. And that’s where we come in.
At Big Sky Bravery, we remind them of that humanity. We create space for reflection and reconnection. We give them opportunities and tools to navigate a world that rarely slows down. We don’t ask them to share their story. They do when they’re ready. And when they do, we’re ready to listen.
“This isn’t just about a week in Montana. It’s about walking alongside these warriors for the rest of their lives.”
The Next Chapter: The Big Sky Bravery Ranch
As we celebrate ten years of service, we also look to the future. And it has never looked brighter.
In 2024, thanks to the generosity of a Chicago based family foundation, we secured 85 acres of land in Big Sky. This land will become the permanent home of our mission: The Big Sky Bravery Ranch. Groundbreaking begins in summer 2025.
The Ranch will feature a main lodge for active duty and spouse Task Forces, as well as dedicated cabins for families and alumni. It will also include full time caretaker quarters, which will be occupied by a retired SOF family committed to stewarding the land and preserving the sacredness of this space year round.
This is more than a build. It’s a legacy project. One that will stand long after we’re gone. One that will serve thousands of warriors and their families for generations to come. A place where healing is embedded in the design. Where honor meets restoration. Where the mission of Big Sky Bravery has a home of its own.
Lives Saved, Futures Changed, & We're Just Getting Started
We say this often because it’s true: Big Sky Bravery has saved lives. Quietly. Consistently. And with profound impact.
We’ve watched men and women rediscover hope in a place they never expected to find it. We’ve watched families reconnect. We’ve heard the words, “This program saved my life. This program saved my marriage.” And we’ve stayed in the fight, not just for our recipients, but with them.
Ten years in, our mission remains clear, and our purpose has never been more urgent. With the Ranch on the horizon, the expansion of our programs, and a community of donors, volunteers, and partners rallying behind us, the next decade promises to be even more impactful than the first.
To every recipient who has walked through our doors: you are the reason we exist. To every supporter who believes in our mission: you are the reason we can continue.
And to those we haven’t reached yet: we’re here for you. Because this isn’t just about honoring service and sacrifice. It’s about restoring lives and building a future where no SOF warrior has to walk alone.

MONTANA ROOTS, SMOKED TO PERFECTION
WRITTEN BY AUSTIN DANIELS
In a town that values hard work, quality, and connection, Daniels Gourmet Meats has become more than just a butcher shop. It’s a local staple. Based in Bozeman, this family-run business blends three generations of know-how with a real commitment to community. From house-smoked bacon to custom sausage making, Daniels is all about doing things the right way.
The Daniels story starts in Browerville, Minnesota, where Donald Daniels opened a small meat processing plant in 1965. His son, Ed Daniels, followed in his footsteps and opened his own shop in Miltona. It became a USDA-certified facility known across the region. That’s where Austin Daniels, now the owner of Daniels Gourmet Meats in Bozeman, got his start. Cutting meat and making sausage are skills he learned from a young age.
In 2014, Austin moved to Montana. He saw Bozeman and the Gallatin Valley as the perfect place to grow a business rooted in tradition. By 2017, he had turned a warehouse on Griffin Drive into a full-service meat shop. Today, the business is USDA-inspected and proudly local.
“Here in Montana, good food isn’t just about flavor. It’s about knowing where it comes from.”
Daniels sources meat from Montana and regional producers to ensure quality and freshness. Everything is hand-cut, ground, or smoked in-house using a custom blend of hickory and hardwood. That attention to detail has earned the shop more than 50 national awards for smoked meats in the last seven years.
For the past seven years, Daniels has also been voted “Best Place to Buy Meat in Bozeman.” But for Austin, it’s about more than awards. It’s about keeping a tradition alive, offering great service, and making food people feel good about eating.
Walk into Daniels Gourmet Meats and you’ll find more than a counter full of meat. You’ll find a crew that knows their customers and cares about what they do. The shop offers custom cuts, advice on cooking, and a selection you won’t find at the grocery store. Bacon is a crowd favorite, with nine house flavors like chipotle lime, chorizo, coffee rub, and the spicy “rattlesnake bacon.”
There are also 32 brat varieties, fresh and smoked sausages, deli meats, snack sticks, jerky, and charcuterie. Most of it is made in small batches.
Every Friday is “Fresh Fish Friday,” where the shop flies in king crab legs, cold-water lobster, wild shrimp, Ahi tuna, and more. Orders are placed early in the week to guarantee quality.
Daniels isn’t just in Bozeman. It’s part of Bozeman. The shop supports local 4-H clubs, sports teams, schools, veteran groups, and other community events. Giving back is a big part of the business, and it shows. “We’ve been lucky to grow here,” Austin says. “The community has had our back, and we try to do the same.”
In a world where food can feel impersonal, Daniels offers something different. Real people, real products, and a real connection to the community. Whether you’re grabbing fresh cuts for the weekend, ordering a gift bundle, or picking up seafood on a Friday, Daniels delivers service and quality you can trust.
Because here in Montana, good food isn’t just about flavor. It’s about knowing where it comes from.

HOMEGROWN
LIVING IN MONTANA: LAYER BY LAYER
Written by Mike Somerby & Daniel Mouw
There’s a kind of clarity you find in Montana, standing on a ridge or by a fast-moving river, wind in your face, peaks in every direction. Nature doesn’t wait for you here. It pushes, shapes, and tests you. For the few who stay, like the team at Duckworth, it’s worth it. Life here is simple, hard-earned, and real.
Duckworth isn’t your average apparel company. It’s born and built in Montana, with every product made start to finish in the U.S. The wool comes straight from the Helle family ranch in Dillon, where their sheep graze year-round. Nearly 100 years of ranching, and generations of know-how, go into every layer.
To understand Duckworth is to understand the Helle family, a fourth-generation Montana ranching family with deep roots in the Beaverhead Valley. For decades, John Helle and his family have raised 10,000 Merino sheep
across grasslands and high-country ranges. These sheep, bred for their soft, fine wool, graze at elevations from 5,000 to 9,500 feet and endure everything Montana weather throws their way.
“The sheep are built for this place,” John says. “And so are we.”
In the early 2010s, the Helles saw a broken system. U.S. wool was being sent overseas for processing and sold back with little oversight or quality control. So they decided to change it. Keep it here. Grow the wool, spin the yarn, make the fabric, and sew the garments, every step done in the U.S., and every piece under Duckworth’s watch. The company became more than a brand. It became a way to return to values that matter: craftsmanship, accountability, and taking care of the land and people behind it all.
SHEEP TO SHELF: A NEW STANDARD
In a world of fast fashion and global supply chains, Duckworth’s radically transparent model is a rarity. “Sheep to Shelf” means exactly what it sounds like. Every garment begins with wool grown on the Helle’s ranch in Montana, and every stage from scouring to sewing happens in the U.S.
Because Duckworth oversees each link in the supply chain, we’re able to minimize waste, maximize quality, and support American jobs at every step as we pursue revitalizing the American Wool Industry through American
Manufacturing. The wool is shorn by hand each spring, then cleaned, spun, and turned into fabric at long-standing American mills. Every pattern, every seam, every finishing detail is thoughtfully crafted to perform in the conditions Montanans know best. This control also enables something increasingly rare: true traceability. Customers can know exactly where their clothing came from — not just the country, but the ranch, the sheep, the people. It’s accountability made tangible, in a garment that will outlast trends and stand the test of time.
“Nearly 100 years of ranching & generations of know-how go into every layer.”
Montana doesn’t hand out easy days. The weather shifts without warning—snow in the morning, sun by lunch. But for those who know how to move with it, the reward is real.
Duckworth builds clothing for that kind of life. Gear that layers up, breathes, insulates, and holds strong through whatever the day brings. Spring might start with ski laps and end with dinner by a backyard fire. Duckworth’s Merino wool is made for it all—natural, breathable, and tough. Vapor tees and hoodies keep you cool and dry on a run or shed hunt. When the wind kicks up, the Woolcloud collection holds the line. This isn’t fashion. It’s Montana-tested gear for people who live close to the land.
For those drawn to the wide-open spaces of the Northern Rockies, the second homeowners, the seasonal residents, the dreamers who make Montana their own, there’s
often a desire to connect more deeply to the place. Duckworth offers that connection. These aren’t just garments for outdoor use; they’re wearable reflections of the land, the people, and the principles that define life under the Big Sky. Whether you’re casting a fly on the Madison, splitting firewood outside a Paradise Valley cabin, or sipping coffee by the window as snow falls on the Bridgers, Duckworth layers root you in “The Last Best Place.”
When you invest in a piece of Duckworth clothing, you’re not just buying a product. You’re embracing a contrarian lifestyle. One of resilience, revival, and respect. That’s what defines Duckworth. A story that starts with 10,000 sheep grazing Montana grass and wildflowers, moves through the hands of skilled ranchers and textile craftspeople, and ends with a jacket or a baselayer that helps you write your own.
MONTANA MADE, MONTANA PROVEN
In a state known for its scale, its silence, and its sincerity, Duckworth stands as proof that great things can come from humble beginnings. Duckworth wasn’t born in a boardroom, but on a two-person ski lift that dots Montana’s small town ski resorts. Our gear isn’t tested in labs, but in the unpredictable drama of Montana’s four true seasons. We didn’t build our products for trends, but for timeless functionality.
Because in Montana, you don’t dress for style. You dress for the story you want to live, and the ones you want to tell at day’s end, boots off, fire crackling, home at last. And those stories? They’re better when you're in Duckworth.
