THE JOURNEY BEHIND THE SEVENTH KING SERIES

It is December of 2023, and if you had told me then that I would be a published author by the summer of 2024, I probably would have laughed. I did not have any grand designs to become an author. In fact, my entrance into the world of writing was entirely unplanned. I simply started feeling creative and daydreaming about a storyline, and the thought struck me: "Why not give it a try?"

At the time, my only goal was to enjoy myself. I had no particular plan in place—no desire to publish, no burning ambition to craft a literary masterpiece. But as I began writing, I found the process so enjoyable that I decided to challenge myself. Could I actually finish a book? The answer turned out to be a resounding "yes." Fast forward a few months, and I had completed The Seventh King, the first book in what has now evolved into an entire fantasy romance series. The first book was officially published on June 3, 2024, and to my own surprise, I didn’t stop there. The joy of creation was too addictive, and so I moved straight into the second book, Crown of Shadows, which was published on November 1, 2024. What began as a casual project has now blossomed into a full-fledged series, with plans for five main books and a standalone spin-off.

Theworld I have created for this series is a vast, complex tapestry of magic, politics, love, and betrayal. Much of the landscape in my books was inspired by Montana’s majestic mountains, wideopen spaces, and serene natural beauty. There are scenes, towns, and chapters that reflect areas I love in Montana, which served as a perfect backdrop for the magical expansiveness I wanted to create. In The Seventh King, readers are introduced to Genevieve, a woman in her thirties who is thrust into a new world where magic pulses in the very air she breathes. Genevieve’s journey isn’t just one of self-discovery—it’s one filled

with intrigue, danger, and deep emotional stakes. Caught between the politics of multiple kingdoms, Genevieve’s story is one of survival, growth, and mastery of her own power. Many of my main characters embody the rugged independence and resourcefulness I see in the people of Montana. This lifestyle, deeply rooted in self-reliance, mirrors the challenges my characters face as they navigate treacherous landscapes and complex relationships. The romantic entanglements Genevieve finds herself in are as complex as the magic she is learning to control, creating an electrifying story that is both spicy and emotional.

Oneof the funnier parts of my writing journey is how much of The Seventh King was written, believe it or not, on my cellphone. Between managing the chaos of a toddler and squeezing in time during naps, writing on my phone became my go-to method for getting words down. When I eventually transitioned to my computer, I realized how determined I had become to make this story happen, no matter the hurdles. What is even more interesting is how this process evolved into self-publishing. Once I finished The Seventh King, I realized I wanted to share this story with the world, but I also wanted control over every aspect of the publishing process.

So I took on the challenge of self-publishing. From editing to cover design to managing the actual publishing and marketing of the book, I have done it all myself. While it is an enormous amount of work, it is also incredibly fulfilling to have ownership over every detail of my books. Of course, I am not entirely on my own—I have a strong support system of close friends who betaread for me and provide invaluable feedback. The world map found in The Seventh King and Crown of Shadows was designed by my father, whose artistry added an extra layer of depth and richness to the world I had envisioned.

b alanc I ng l IFE as a s tay - at - h om E m om and a uthor

One of the questions I get asked most frequently is how I balance writing with being a stay-at-home mom to a toddler. The answer? Nap time is sacred. Those few hours of quiet during the day are my most productive writing times. Being a full-time mom while also trying to write and promote a fantasy series isn’t easy, but it’s become a rhythm that works for me. I have learned to work in bursts of creative energy, often finding inspiration in the most unexpected moments. When my family and I moved to Bozeman in 2020, I never anticipated that I would spend my days alternating between mom duties and creating an expansive magical world in my spare time. Living in Bozeman has given me a peaceful, creative environment to write in, and when I hit a wall, stepping outside into Montana’s natural beauty always helps me clear my mind. A hike, a picnic, or even just time outdoors usually brings new ideas, or helps me untangle tricky plot or character issues.

Whatcontinues to surprise me is how much joy I have found in writing. I never set out with the goal of becoming an author, but as I have immersed myself in this creative process, I have realized just how deeply I love storytelling. The more I write, the more stories I want to tell. I have a clear roadmap for my current series—five books, with an additional standalone spin-off—but as long as I continue having fun, I will keep writing. Who knows what other worlds or stories I will stumble upon along the way?

"When My faMily and i Moved to bozeMan in 2020, i never anticipated that i Would spend My days alternating betWeen MoM duties and creating an expansive Magical World in My spare tiMe. but here i aM, navigating both Worlds, and loving the process."

l ook I ng F orward : crown oF shadows

With the release of Crown of Shadows on November 1, 2024, I am eager to share the next chapter of Genevieve’s journey. The stakes are higher, the magic more powerful, and the relationships more complicated (and dare I say, spicy). Readers will see Genevieve evolve as she navigates the shadowy undercurrents of not only this new world, but of herself.

In many ways, this second book is even more exciting for me, because I have grown more confident in my storytelling abilities and my understanding of the world I have built. The complexities of the characters and their relationships deepen, and the magic system I have created becomes richer and more intricate.

F I nal t houghts

Looking back, what began as a simple desire to try something new has transformed into a true project of passion. Writing this series has taught me so much—not just about the craft of storytelling, but about myself. I never expected to become an author, but now that I am, I can’t imagine doing anything else. As I continue to explore Genevieve’s world and delve deeper into the intricacies of magic, love, and power, I’m reminded that the best journeys are often the ones we never plan for. And for that, I am endlessly grateful.

Cross-Country skiing in Bozeman

TOP: Just a few blocks from Main Street in Bozeman, Sunset Hills provides rollings trails, with snowmaking.

Bozeman residents and visitors enjoy one of the best community trail systems in the country. It’s a cross country skier’s paradise, made possible by the nonprofit Bridger Ski Foundation (BSF) and their partnerships with private landholders, the City of Bozeman, and the U.S. Forest Service, which allow them to groom over 80 km at seven different locations in Bozeman.

You’ll find snowmaking at Sunset Hills, a few blocks from Main Street; a peaceful escape at Highland Glen across the road; an incredible 25 km stretching up into the mountains at Sourdough; beginner friendly terrain at Bridger Creek Golf Course; and loops at two middle schools, giving students and neighbors easy access to skiing. Add in another 37 km in Hyalite, where BSF helps out the U.S. Forest Service with grooming, and you have world-class skiing nearly at your doorstep.

It all happens because Bozeman’s winter-loving community has a big heart. Residents and local businesses chip in to support BSF’s grooming effort with trail memberships, sponsorships, and donations. BSF’s open-access policy means that anyone can ski on the trails, regardless of their financial situation. “It keeps skiing more accessible to our community,” says BSF Executive Director Evan Weiss. “But as a nonprofit trying to keep up with grooming equipment purchases and maintaining over 80 km of trails, our trails program really relies on the people who contribute year in and year out.”

You’ll find skiers from every walk of life using BSF’s winter trails: Olympians and Paralympians, BSF’s Nordic Pro Team, the MSU Ski Team, school children, senior citizens, beginners, and experts. BSF even runs several beginner and intermediate courses for adults throughout the winter to get you floating down the trails, plus a weekly adult training group.

For Weiss, nothing illustrates the kind of ski community this valley has built better than a Wednesday evening in February. Sixty little kids will be finishing up a ski lesson in Lindley Park, while a crowd gathers a block away at Sunset Hills for the annual FUNSKI Valentine’s Relay. There are hundreds of skiers ranging from age 6 to 76, dressed in costumes, gearing up to ski laps around the rolling terrain next to Bozeman Health. Some are fast, some are first-time racers, and everyone is laughing as they come through the exchange zone. Spectators are ringing bells, and volunteers are stoking a warming fire and setting up a spread of hot cocoa and cookies (with beer in the corner for the adults). Here, community comes first. “And it’s a lifelong love of skiing,” says Weiss.

Where It All StArted

Brothers Cliff and Matt Montagne grew up in Bozeman, skied competitively, then transitioned to coaching. The brothers were the first to set tracks at Sunset Hills in the 1960s, using a borrowed snowmobile and a handmade track setter. In-town skiing was never the same. Cliff was also instrumental in getting ski trails developed at what is now Crosscut Mountain Sports Center up in Bridger Canyon, which gives Bozeman another incredible cross country venue next to Bridger Bowl Ski Area. You’re likely to run into Cliff on the trails, often with the BSF Adult Training Group, and he’s a fixture at the FUNSKI community races. While much has changed in Bozeman over the decades, Cliff says a lot is still the same: families and friends getting out there to enjoy skiing and winter. Pure and simple.
