SCOPE

ThisAgrémentrelatestoinjectedinternalwallinsulation(IWI),hereinaftertheSystem,basedonsuperbeadcavitywallinsulation(hereinafterCWI).The Systemisinstalledtoimprovethethermalinsulationofexternalclosedconstructioncavitywalls.TheSystemisonlyforuseinpropertieswithexteriormasonry wallsofatleast300mmthick,witharesidualcavityofatleast50mmbetweentheinternalfaceoftheexternalwallandaninternallining(oftraditionallathand plasterorrefurbishedwithinternaltimberstudworkandaplasterboardlining)hereinaftertheinnerleafTheSystemisforuseincavitywallsinexisting residentialbuildingsintheUKandIreland.

DESCRIPTION

TheSystemconsistsofagrey,spherical,closedcell,carbonenhancedexpandedpolystyrene(hereinafterEPS)beadmanufacturedwithapentaneexpanding agentinaccordancewithdraftBSEN16809-1.Awater-baseddispersionofacrylicco-polymeremulsion,air-drying,contactbondingadhesiveissimultaneously injectedwiththeEPSbeadswithappropriateinjectionmachinery.TheEPSbeadsarecoatedwiththebondingadhesiveintheinjectionguntobondandsetthe EPSbeadsandmaketheEPSbeadfillstableoverthelong-term.TheSystemisinjectedthroughaseriesofholes,drilledinapredeterminedpattern.Layersof EPSbeadsarebuiltupuntilthewholecavitywallisfullyfilledinaccordancewithBSEN16809-2.

CHAPTER2-TECHNICALASSESSMENT

2.1-POINTSOFATTENTIONTOTHESPECIFIER

2.1.1Designresponsibility

ProjectspecificdesignistheresponsibilityofanApprovedInstallertrainedandapprovedbytheAgrémentholder.

2.1.2Appliedbuildingphysics(heat,airmoisture)

ThephysicalbehaviourofthewallincorporatingtheSystemshallbeverifiedassuitablebyacompetentspecialist,whocanbeeitheraqualifiedemployeeofthe Agrémentholderoraqualifiedconsultant.TheSpecialistwillcheckthephysicalbehaviouroftheexternalwalldesignandifnecessarycanofferadvicein respectofimprovementstoachievethefinalspecification.AcondensationriskanalysisshallbecompletedatdesignstageinaccordancewithBS5250.Itis recommendedthattheSpecialistco-operatescloselywiththeAgrémentholder.

2.1.3Generaldesignconsiderations

Considerationshallbegiventothelocalwind-drivenrainindexandthesiteexposurezoneaccordingtoBS8104

Theminimumcavitywidthtobefilledmustbenolessthan50mm

The50mmcavitybetweentheinnerfaceoftheexternalmasonrywallandouterfaceoftheinnerleafmustbefreefromobstructiontoensurethatthereisnota bridgethatallowswatertocrossthecavityfromtheexternalmasonrywalltotheinnerleaf

Avapourcontrollayer(hereinafterVCL)canbeappliedontheinternalfaceoftheinnerleaftoensurethatthemoisturecontentofthetimberiskeptatorbelow 20%,andtoensuretheairtightnessofthebuilding.

2.1.4Projectspecificdesignconsiderations

Pre-installationsurveyrequirements

Apre-installationsurveymustbeundertakentotheAgrémentholdersspecification;itisamandatoryrequirementtouseatapemeasureandborescope,to assessthewidthofthecavityandtoensureaclearvoidexists.Thefindingsofthissurveymustberecordedonasurveyorsreport.Selectionofanappropriate drillingpatternmusttakeintoconsiderationthenatureofthebuildinganditsconstruction.

2.1.5Permittedapplications

OnlyapplicationsdesignedaccordingtothisAgrémentareallowed,ineachcasetheSpecifiermustcooperatecloselywiththeAgrémentholder.

TheSystemshallbespecifiedinexistingbuildingstocomplywiththerequirementsofthenationalBuildingRegulations.

2.1.6Installercompetencelevel

TheAgrémentholderoperatesanApprovedInstallerSchemefortheSystemunderwhichinstallersareapproved,registeredandregularlyreviewedbythe AgrémentholdertodemonstratethattheyarecompetenttocarryoutinstallationsoftheSysteminaccordancewiththisAgrément.DetailsofApprovedInstallers areavailablefromtheAgrémentholder.ApprovedInstallersarefullyresponsibleforeachinstallationoftheSystemthattheyundertake.Furthermore,installers aretobemonitoredunderanIndependent3rdPartyCWIInstallationAssessment&SurveillanceSchemeoperatedorapprovedbyKiwaLtd.

2.1.7Delivery,storageandsitehandling

Onceinstalled,theSystemisprotectedinservicefromagentsliabletocausedeteriorationandwillbeeffectiveasinsulationforthelifeofthebuildinginwhichit isinstalled.Ifitisdeemednecessaryforanyreason,theSystemcanbeextractedfromthecavityvoid

2.1.9Maintenanceandrepair

Onceinstalled,theSystemdoesnotrequireregularmaintenanceprovidedtheweather-tightnessoftheexternalcavitywallismaintained.Foradviceinrespect ofrepair,consulttheAgrémentholder.

2.1.10PerformancefactorsinrelationtotheMajorPointsofAssessment

Adequacyoffill

Acavitywallcanbefullyfilled(withoutgapsandwithaconsistentdensity)usingtheSystem.ThebondingadhesiveensuresthattheSystemremainsstable withinthecavityandhasadequateresistancetosettlement.

Thermalinsulationproperties

ForthepurposeofU-valuecalculationsandtodetermineiftherequirementsofnationalBuildingRegulationsaremet,thethermalresistanceandU-valueof cavitywallsincorporatingtheSystemshouldbecalculatedinaccordancewithBSENISO10211(takingintoconsiderationBSENISO6946,BSENISO10456, BREReport443,PAS2030andPAS2035),usingtheSystemsdeclaredthermalconductivity(D)value.

Condensationrisk

ExternalcavitywallsincorporatingtheSystemwilladequatelylimittheriskofsurfaceandinterstitialcondensationwhendesignedinaccordancewithBS5250.

TheSystemwillresistanywind-drivenrainpenetrationacrossacavitytotheinnerleaf.

ThegapsthatoccurbetweentheEPSbeadsallowanywatertodraindownfreelytotheground,ratherthanacrosstheSystem.

Resistancetogroundmoisture

TheSystemdoesnotabsorbwaterbycapillaryaction.TestsconfirmtheSystemwillnottransmitmoisturebycapillaryactionacrossthecavity.

Behaviourinrelationtofire

TheSystemisclassifiedasEuropeanClassificationEinaccordancewithBSEN13501-1.

ForresidentialbuildingsinEngland,WalesandNorthernIreland,thefollowingappliesinaccordancewiththenationalBuildingRegulations: theSystemisrestrictedtobuildingswithnofloormorethan11maboveground.RefertothenationalBuildingRegulationsfortypesofbuildingsandany exclusionsthatmayapply; boundaryrestrictionswillapply,dependentontheexternalsurfacematerialsoftheexternalwallincorporatingtheSystem,facingtheboundary.

ForallbuildingsinScotland,theSystemisrestrictedtobuildingswithnofloormorethan11mabovegroundandnotlessthan1mfromtheboundary.Insuch cases,theSystemmaybeexcludedfromtheunprotectedareacalculationregardlessofopenings.RefertothenationalBuildingRegulationsfortypesof buildingsandanyexclusionsthatmayapply.

FordwellingsinIreland,theSystemshallnotbeusedonbuildingswithastoreyof15mormoreabovegroundlevel;theSystemcanbeusedwithoutany boundaryrestrictions.RefertotherelevantnationalBuildingRegulationsfortypesofbuildingsandanyexclusionthatmayapply.

Toensurethatthefireintegrityofatimberframedwallismaintained,thetimberliningboardmusthavethejointsbetweentheboardsfullysealedandsupported bytimberstudworkorbattens.

Inallconstructions,cavitybarriersshallbeprovidedtocomplywiththerelevantprovisionsofthenationalBuildingRegulations.

Fordetailedconditionsofuseregardingrequirementsforsubstratefireperformance,cavityclosersandbarriers,firestoppingofservicepenetrationsand combustibilitylimitationsforothermaterialsandcomponentsusedintheoverallwallconstruction,designersshallrefertotherelevantnationalBuilding Regulations.

Proximityoffluesandappliances

Non-combustibleinsulationshallseparateorshieldtheinstalledSystemfromanyheat-emittingdevices,fixedcombustionappliances,incinerators,recessed lighting,fireplaces,chimneysorfluepipespassingthroughexternalwalls,andfromanypotentialsourceofignitionwherethetemperatureisinexcessof70°C, inaccordancewiththeprovisionsofthenationalBuildingRegulations.

2.3-INSTALLATION

TheSystemshallbeinstalledstrictlyinaccordancewiththeSystemManualinstructionsoftheAgrémentholderandtherequirementsofthisAgrément. InstallationcanbeundertakenbyoperativestrainedandapprovedbytheApprovedInstaller(whomustbelongtotheKiwaInstallerAssessmentand SurveillanceScheme)

2.3.2Delivery,storageandsitehandling

TheEPSbeads:

aredeliveredtositeinlargebulkcontainerloadsorpolythenebagsandlabelledwiththeSystemname,AgrémentholdersnameandtheBDAAgrément® logoincorporatingthenumberofthisAgrément.TheEPSbeadisotherwiseunprotected; shouldbekeptdryandawayfromheatsourcesandavoidrainexposureandprotectedfromprolongedexposuretosunlight.

Damaged,contaminatedorwetmaterialsmustnotbeused.

Thebondingadhesive:

isdeliveredtositeinplasticdrums/containersandlabelledwiththeSystemname,AgrémentholdersnameandtheBDAAgrément®logoincorporatingthe numberofthisAgrément;

hasanoptionalwintermixadhesiveavailablewhichhasaflowadditivetoassistincoldtemperatures; containersshouldbestoredinsideandoffthegroundatatemperaturebetween5°Cand25°Candprotectedfromfrost,directsunlightandhigh temperatures.

Donotusecontaminatedbondingadhesive.

2.3.3Generalprocedure

InstallationoftheSystemisundertakenusinginjectionmachinesbasedonacompressedairdeliverysystem.Theinstallerprovidesallnecessaryhoses,drilling tools,equipment,injectiongunandmaterialsformakinggoodthewallsaftertheinstallation.

Wheneverpracticableandpossible,allofthecavityspacefromgroundleveltotherooforgablecopingsshouldbefilled.Installationmustbecarriedouttothe highestpointineachelevation,ortoaleveldeterminedbyanyverticalcavitybarrierbetweenadjacentproperties(whicheveristhelower)

ThetargetmeaninstalleddensityofthisSystemis12kg/m3overtheentirewall.Localareaswithinthewallmustnothaveadensityvariationofmorethan ±2kg/m3fromthetargetmeandensityoveranareaof0.5m2

Ensurethattheexternalmasonrywallandroofisinagoodstateofrepairandthatallcavityopenings,suchasthosearounddoorsandwindows,aresealed,to avoidwateringressontotheSystem.

2.3.5Standardfillmethod

TheSystemiscompatiblewiththefollowinginternalwalllinings: plasterboard; lathandplaster; VCLandplasterboard.

Drilling

Plasterboarddrillingoperation: core(over-drill)holesmustbe22mm.

Lathandplasterdrillingoperation: core(over-drill)holesmustbe22mm.

VCLandplasterboarddrillingoperation: core(over-drill)holesmustbe75mm.

Pre-fillingchecks

A360°borescopecheckshouldbecarriedoutineveryvoidbeingfilledtoensurethattheinnerleafhasbeenbuiltinlinewiththespecificationdrawings

Fillingcancommenceoncetheinstallerissatisfiedthattheinnerleafhasbeenbuilttospecification,wiringisencasedinconduitandlocationofthedrillholeis suitable.

Checksarecarriedouttodeterminetheinjectionmachinesettingsareoptimised,including: apressureswitchtestwhichensuresthattheinjectionmachinepressureswitchisoperatingcorrectly; EPSbeadandadhesiveflowratecheckwhichensuresthattheSystemwillbeinjectedintothecavitywiththecorrectamountofadhesivebeingappliedfor thevolumeofEPSbeadsrecordedatthedesiredEPSbeaddensity.

Injectionfilling

ThevoidswithintheinnerleafareinjectedwiththeSystemusingadirectionalnozzletopreventdamagetotheplasterboard/lathandplaster

2.3.7Post-installationchecks

Post-installationexternalandinternalchecksarecarriedouttoensurethat:

theinstallationhasbeencompletedandthatnodamagehasoccurredtothebuilding; allareashavebeeninsulated;

allinternaldrillholesintheinnerleafarefinishedaspersection2.3.6;

allareasincludingtrunkedairvents,e.g.thoseprovidingunder-floorventilationandcombustionairforheatingappliances,arecheckedandany obstructionsorEPSbeadingressmustbeclearedandthecavitybreachsealedifpossible;

allfluesandchimneysmustbecarefullycheckedbyanappropriatetest(e.g.asmoketest)toverifythattheyareclearandunobstructed; EPSbeadsinjectedthroughthetopofthecavityintotheloftspaceareremovedandanypointsofleakagesealed; eavesintheloftareleftfreefromEPSbeadstofacilitateairflow; allelectriccircuitsandapplianceshavebeenreinstated.
