“ATLANTA’S OWN” KENNY LEON RETURNS TO HIS ROOTS FOR TRADING PLACES The Tony Award-Winning Director Shares the Process Behind His Latest Musical STORY BY
Sally Henry Fuller “Atlanta has a few claims-to-fame in the entertainment industry at large. From the film industry boom around Metro Atlanta to Alliance Theatre’s preBroadway world premiere musicals, our community has become a launchpad for greatness in the arts. One specific entertainment industry legend we proudly claim is Tony Award-winner Kenny Leon. Famous for directing everything from Broadway productions like A Raisin in the Sun and A Soldier’s Play, to screen adaptations like Steel Magnolias and The Wiz LIVE, he has decidedly made a name for himself in the theatre landscape. But before all of that, he was here in Atlanta.” “I always feel like I’m Atlanta’s own,” Leon said. Before the Tony Awards, before the NAACP Image Awards, before the Emmy nominations, I had people [in Atlanta] who knew me and supported me and loved me. “That’s where I

10 | encore learned how to be a better director, a better actor, a better artist. And it’s great to come home to Atlanta and to the Alliance Theatre, specifically – a theatre that’s gone on to make its mark in the nation and the artistic community.” As former Artistic Director of first Alliance Theatre and then Kenny Leon’s True Colors Theatre Company (which he also co-founded), his Atlanta legacy is alive and well. Now more than 20 years since he turned over the reins at Alliance, he returns to his roots to direct the world premiere musical Trading Places.
SEEING THROUGH NEW EYES
Kenny Leon
While this version will be familiar to fans of the 1983 movie of the same name, Leon is takingthe opportunity to tell a new story for modern audiences. “I always treat each piece as if it’s a brand new piece,” he explained. “I try to honor the intentions of the original, but I try to look at it through fresh eyes. [The film’s creative team], including Eddie Murphy, put some amazing work on screen. But it would not be honoring them to just copy what they did and put it on stage. Honoring them is asking, ‘How does their work inspire me, being an artist in 2022?’” In this case, he thought a story about seeing the world through the eyes of someone very different would be perfect for today. “I couldn’t be more excited, because the musical is about if we were actually to trade places with each other,” he said. “With Trading Places, the reason to [adapt it now] is because of where we are in our country now, what we’ve gone through post-George Floyd and Breonna Taylor, where we are in recognizing that our differences could be our beauty.” He believes this is the perfect story to use to explore this idea. “We’re all different. We’re different with sexual orientation; we are different racially and culturally. And so the musical comedy explores the question, ‘If we were to trade places with each other, what would we learn? How great could we become?’” said the director. Whenever he adapts a story, whether stage-to-screen or screen-to-stage, he considers what it is artistically that makes the story right for the new medium.

WHAT MAKES IT SING “I’m always looking for what makes [a film] stage-worthy or what makes it want to sing. I don’t believe in taking a movie and putting it on stage,” he said. “So we have to say, ‘[The musical is] different because of the way we are going to cast it,’ or ‘It’s different in terms of how we are going to structure the book,’ or it’s different in some other way.” One of the main differences between the original and his stage version is in the casting. “The first thing I wanted to do is take that center role and make it an AfricanAmerican woman. And then I wanted to take the other role and make it a gay white male,” he explained. “And so I wanted to find as much diversity in the telling of the story so that the audiences would say, ‘Okay, I see the story of the movie, but now it’s fresh, and it’s different, and it’s more impactful. While using Trading Places to say something meaningful and timely, he emphasizes the musical is hilarious as well. “[I’ve asked myself], ‘What can I say politically and socially while at the same time, having people laughing and rolling on the floor because that’s the art form?’” Leon continued. “I mean, the way we’re telling it is a musical comedy. So in a musical comedy, if no one is laughing, I haven’t done my job. So I want them to laugh. And I promise you, people will be laughing big time, and hopefully they’ll be humming a lot of these songs.” After Trading Places concludes, Atlanta will have a touch of Leon’s artistic spark when his recent Tony Award-winning revival A Soldier’s Play tours to the Fox Theatre in March, 2023. “I’m very happy because [A Soldier’s Play playwright] Charles Fuller is one of our amazing African-American writers. And he just did an amazing job with that play,” he said. “The more eyes on the story, the more opportunity we have for impact to change the world.”
YES TO COMING HOME Whatever the project, Leon’s fondness for Atlanta has kept him coming back. And especially getting to be here for an extended time with Trading Places, he is excited to be home. “I said yes to [Trading Places]. And I said yes to coming home,” Leon said. “I like to say, Atlanta is never a step to get somewhere else. I’m creating this production Trading Places for the world and it just happens to be in Atlanta. So that should make it even sweeter and more special because it’s the place I call home.”

TIM RICE (Lyrics) has worked in music, theatre and films since 1965 when he met Andrew Lloyd Webber, a fellow struggling songwriter. Rather than pursue Tim’s ambitions to write rock or pop songs, they turned their attention to Andrew’s obsession – musical theatre. Their first collaboration was based on the life of Dr Thomas Barnardo, the Victorian philanthropist, The Likes of Us. Their next three works together were much more successful – Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, Jesus Christ Superstar and Evita. Tim has since worked with other distinguished popular composers such as Elton John (The Lion King, Aida), Alan Menken (Aladdin, King David, Beauty and the Beast), Björn Ulvaeus and Benny Andersson (Chess) and Stuart Brayson (From Here to Eternity). He has also written with Freddie Mercury, Burt Bacharach and Rick Wakeman among others. He has recently written and presented 50 weekly podcast chats (entitled ‘Get Onto My Cloud’) which are mercifully short (25 mins max) reminiscing about his years in music, theatre and film – playing hits and flops, out-takes and number ones (bpn.fm/getontomycloud). In 2021 he and Peter Hobbs wrote ‘Gee Seven’ for the Truro Cathedral Choir to coincide with the G7 economic summit invasion of Cornwall. Tim founded his own cricket team in 1973, which played its 715th match in 2021, and was President of MCC, founded in 1789, in 2002. He was appointed President of the London Library in 2017 in succession to Sir Tom Stoppard. He is a Trustee of Sunderland FC’s Foundation of Light and a Life Vice-President of the schools/cricket charity Chance to Shine. He crops up here and there in all branches of the media drawing on his extensive knowledge of the history of popular music since Elvis was a lad. He has won several awards, mainly for the wrong thing or for simply turning up.
24 | encore ANDREW LLOYD WEBBER (Music) has composed the scores of some of the world’s most famous musicals. From Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat (1968) to Cinderella (2021) his work has been consistently seen on world stages. Before the covid pandemic hit, Lloyd Webber had shows continually running in the West End for 48 years and on Broadway for 41. When Sunset Boulevard joined School Of Rock, Cats and Phantom of the Opera he equalled Rodgers and Hammerstein’s record of four shows running simultaneously on Broadway. He is one of the select group of artists with EGOT status, having received Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony Awards. Lloyd Webber owns seven London theatres including the iconic London Palladium and Theatre Royal, Drury Lane. Over the past three years the latter has been completely restored and renovated at a cost of over £60 million. It is one of the biggest projects ever undertaken by a private theatre owner in recent times. His mantra that every penny of profit made from his theatres is ploughed back into the buildings has meant that considerable work has been undertaken across his theatre portfolio during the pandemic, including the complete re-modelling and re-seating of the Gillian Lynne. Lloyd Webber is passionate about the importance of musical education and diversity in the arts. The Andrew Lloyd Webber Foundation provides 30 performing arts scholarships every year for talented students with financial need and supports a range of projects such as the Music In Secondary School Trust and commissioning research into diversity in theatre. Andrew Lloyd Webber was knighted in 1992 and created an honorary life peer in 1997. To mark his 70th birthday, his bestselling autobiography Unmasked was published by Harper Collins in March 2018.

FOG DELAYED STONES, BETTE MIDLER’S GHOST AND TURNING THE STAGE INTO AN ICE RINK
• The Rolling Stones have performed at the Fox twice, to date. In June 1978, the show was first billed as “the Cockroaches,” so as not to reveal too early the true identity of the performers. • The Stones next appeared Oct. 26, 1981, playing for a standingroom-only crowd. As history has it, the bandmates traveled to Savannah for a day-trip and, due to dense fog in Atlanta, their return flight was rerouted to Macon. The show began 90 minutes late. • Bette Midler was scheduled for a three-night gig in February 1983. According to longtime Atlanta concert promoter Alex Cooley
(who died in 2016), when she reached her dressing room she claimed that someone had died there, that it was haunted and she would not perform. The Divine Miss M was moved to another dressing room and, apparently content enough, agreed to go onstage. • On New Year’s Day 2005, Broadway on Ice ice-skating pros Nancy Kerrigan and Rudy Galindo took to the stage, along with Broadway’s Leslie Uggams (a Tony Award winner for Hallelujah, Baby!). Creating an impromptu ice rink was an overnight process that called for spraying the stage with water and quickly freezing it. Again and again and again.

Atlanta’s Fox Theatre has played host to many world-renowned artists, from the Rolling Stones and Lynyrd Skynyrd, to Bette Midler and Widespread Panic. In July 1976, in fact, Lynyrd Skynyrd performed for three consecutive nights, recording the album One More From the Road and donating $5,000 toward the Save the Fox campaign. In February 1993, the band played another three nights, one of which was broadcast on pay-per-view television. Here are a few other rockin’ fun facts:
