Shucked book writer Robert Horn describes the imagination and wit it took to write this original musical from scratch.
STORY BY Ruthie Fierberg
For Robert Horn, comedy is as natural an impulse as breathing. “My mind works in puns,” he admitted. “For me, it’s more about editing them than creating them, because I’ll sit down and write way too many, and then it’s about what works.” Still, so many of them do. At the recent Sardi’s portrait unveiling for Broadway producer Bob Boyett, Horn offered a tribute: no fewer than three pages of oneliners, putting the crowd in stitches.
Horn won a Tony Award for his humor, taking home the 2019 best book of a musical trophy for scripting the musical adaptation of Tootsie. With his latest stage outing, Shucked, Horn didn’t have source material to lean on — which has its advantages and disadvantages. “Any time you work with source material, you always have to respect the DNA of what that is,” Horn said. “Even if you make it your own in whatever way.” With Shucked, Horn wasn’t tied to a legacy, but he had to invent that much more.
“It was pure imagination,” Horn said of Shucked. “This was just out of nothing, a blank page, and it’s really scary. But I also worked with two incredible
collaborators, [Grammy-winning country songwriters] Shane McNally and Brandy Clark, who are so funny and known in their world for storytelling music. That collaboration really helped pull me through.”
“I always start everything I do with tone, and I knew this was going to be a farce,” Horn said. “But I also knew there had to be a deeper message underneath.”
The story they created begins in Cobb County, a town sheltered from the outside world. Its high cornfields keep the community well-fed, prosperous and isolated until, one day, the crop starts to fail. Despite the objections of her loved ones, Maizy, born and raised in Cobb County, ventures to the outside world to find help. But the man she brings back home might not be the savior Maizy thinks.
“I knew I wanted to create a town that had closed themselves off from the outside world because they didn’t want their rights taken away from them — they didn’t want to change,” Horn explained. “I needed something to close them off. Because they’re farmers, I was like, ‘Corn! That’ll do it!’ And it also became an analogy for growth, life and all the things this story is actually about. But for me, you’ve got to do it with comedy.”
Yes, Shucked has become known as the musical “about corn,” but it’s also much more. Horn was writing about a deeper divisiveness he had been witnessing. “The world started to change,” Horn recounted. “I’m married to a Southern man whose family is Southern Baptist and very conservative. And I’m with Jews from Brooklyn — it’s a very different thing. But we break bread and love each other and don’t try to change each other.”
“We just look at what we have in common,” Horn continued. “And it started to be important to me to write that.”
To get in the Southern voice of Cobb County’s cast of characters, Horn leaned on his experiences with his extended family as well as his previous writing experience of television’s “Designing Women.” In building out the Shucked cast of “quirky” characters, Horn thought of Peanut as the town’s Yoda — spouting knowledge that, at times, is more profound than you’d expect. “There’s an innocence to these characters and this world,” Horn said. That naïveté also allowed Horn to push the envelope with a slew of his jokes. As the scribe noted: “[It] buys us the ability to be as blue and risqué as we want to be because there’s a sweetness underneath it.”
Cobb County is all Southern, but the story’s narrators bring more of Horn’s natural New York sensibility and Borscht Belt style of humor. “The show is blue collar meets Brooklyn,” he said. The blend of sincere and silly, innocent and bawdy, Southern and Northern earned Horn a Tony nomination for his book of Shucked.
“It has surpassed what I thought it would be when we started,” Horn confided. “I did not expect this, but I love it.
