OHIO THEATRE COLUMBUS, OHIO
JUNE 2025
Dear Broadway Patrons,
I probably don’t need to tell you, as you’re likely as excited about them as I am, but it’s coming up on Tonys time!
The Tony Awards is one of the biggest nights for Broadway, showcasing the very best musicals and plays from the past year. It’s an exciting and entertaining night that you don’t want to miss. (I’m here to remind you that the Tony Awards will be broadcast Sunday, June 8 on CBS from 8-11 pm!).
Not only are the Tonys delightful and fun, but they are also an important indicator of which shows will mount touring productions. The awards give us a sense of which shows we’re likely to bring to Columbus in coming seasons. As an obvious example, you’re all set to see the quirky and uplifting Kimberly Akimbo, which won five Tonys in 2023, including Best Musical. In 2025/2026, we’ll have The Outsiders, winner of Best Musical in 2024, and Water for Elephants, one of the other Best Musical nominees in 2024.
At CAPA, one of our goals is to bring a broad variety of performing art to Columbus so people don’t have to go to other cities to experience the art they want. When we’re talking about Broadway, that means getting the best productions here as soon as we can. We’re always pushing to give you, our Broadway audiences, shows here as early as possible in their touring “lives.”
Since CAPA is a member of the Broadway League, we have a vote for the Tony Awards. I consider it a privilege to represent Columbus in each year’s voting process. But we’re just one of 831 eligible voters, so I’m waiting just like you to hear the winners announced on June 8.
No matter who wins, I can assure you we’ll be working hard to make sure you’ll be able to see them soon right here in Columbus.
Thanks, as always, for coming.

KIMBERLY AKIMBO CREATORS DAVID LINDSAY-ABAIRE AND JEANINE TESORI ON HOW THE PLAY GREW UP TO BE A MUSICAL
STORY BY Darryn King
After Shrek the Musical opened on Broadway in 2008, playwright and lyricist David Lindsay-Abaire and composer Jeanine Tesori knew they wanted to collaborate on another project. When it came to deciding what it would be, Tesori literally pulled it off the shelf.
Written in 2000, Lindsay-Abaire’s play Kimberly Akimbo was about a teenage girl with a rapid aging disease. The play premiered in 2001 at South Coast Repertory in California before an Off-Broadway run in 2003 at Manhattan Theatre Club. “She said, ‘I think this one sings,’” Lindsay-Abaire told Broadway.com Managing Editor Beth Stevens on The Broadway Show.

Premiering Off-Broadway in 2021 at Atlantic Theater Company ahead of its 2022 Broadway transfer, the resulting musical certainly did sing—to the tune of five Tony Awards including for Best Musical, Best Book of a Musical and Best Original Score. (These were Lindsay-Abaire’s first Tony wins; Tesori previously won for her score for Fun Home.)
As Tesori explained, Lindsay-Abaire’s story of a young girl trapped in the body of a much older woman—whatever its biological implausibility—felt emotionally true. “When my grandmother was in her late eighties, she would look at the mirror and she would say, ‘God, I’m so surprised I’m not 12,’” she said. “It’s about how we stay the children we were.”
It was also a story, Tesori felt, with the right, rich balance of tragedy and comedy, beauty and absurdity. “That’s what life is, so much of the time,” said Tesori.
The long process of creative development began with a complete rewrite. “One of the things that we are deeply invested in is looking at work like you didn’t write it at all,” said Tesori. “We sat in this room and we started at page one—and I mean: Punctuation. Stage directions.”
For Lindsay-Abaire, revisiting and reexamining Kimberly’s story two decades later was a lot like seeing his life flash before his eyes. “Whoever I was 20 years ago, that’s who wrote that play,” he said. “My concerns were whatever they were at the time; I connected more with the teenage characters. And now, all these years later, I’m a dad with two boys and I have a different relationship with child and parent stuff. To reinvestigate it from this new place is a pretty major thing.”
Ultimately, Kimberly Akimbo the musical feels like something different than Kimberly Akimbo the play. “That’s just the magic of music and what Jeanine brought to it,” said LindsayAbaire. “It’s a completely different animal—it’s more dimensional and it’s more emotional.”

When CAPA reopened the Ohio Theatre in 1969 after (literally) saving it from the wrecking ball and then overseeing a massive renovation project, among the first programs to be offered was a summertime series screening classic films. This was, in part, a nod to the theatre’s early days as a movie house.
This summer, CAPA hosts the 56th annual Summer Movie Series, and while the definition of “classic” might have changed as time has marched on, the intent of the series has not.
The 2025 series will run June 13-August 24 and feature 28 films over seven weeks. Highlights include 10 series premieres, six films marking significant anniversaries of their original releases, a silent film with live musical accompaniment, and two Saturday mornings of classic cartoons.
Because you’re our Broadway fans, you’ll be thrilled to learn that you can see Julie and Christopher on the big screen (in the 60th anniversary of its original theatrical release!) this summer before The Sound of Music comes to town as part of our 2025-
JOIN US FOR THE CAPA SUMMER MOVIE SERIES
The Princess Bride
26 Broadway in Columbus season. Other song and/or dance offerings this summer include Guys and Dolls, Top Hat, and, after a fashion, The Blues Brothers.
True classics, including the uproarious Arsenic and Old Lace and the sweeping Gone With the Wind, continue the tradition of classic film as the emphasis of the series. And because we know classic movie fans can’t get enough, there are two Hitchcock features on this summer’s schedule, Marnie and Spellbound.
Remember that part of the meaning of “classic film” changing? Favorites like The Princess Bride and The Shawshank Redemption will be screened this summer. And Moonstruck, featuring the magnificent and cherished Cher. (Movies are subject to change without notice.)
As always, Ohio Theatre organist Clark Wilson (or a member of our very talented team of organists) will provide pre-show entertainment at the console of the Ohio Theatre’s treasured “Mighty Morton” theatre organ presented by Ice Miller 30 minutes prior to each screening. Wilson will also provide the soundtrack for our silent film offering, Safety Last!
Select films will be audio-described for visually impaired persons at no extra charge. Audio description allows patrons to hear a scene-by-scene narration of the on-screen action while they listen to the movie dialogue. Visit capa.com for a list of audio-described movie screenings for the 2025 series.
In addition, ListenWIFI, an assistive listening app that patrons can download to their personal cell phones, is available at all screenings. When coupled with the patron’s headphones or ear buds, the app provides high-quality audio streamed directly to the patron and can be adjusted for volume preference.
Also, as part of the 2025 CAPA Summer Movie Series, CAPA will offer a revealing look at the historic Ohio Theatre with free, one-hour-long, guided tours, complete with a light show and organ demonstration by Clark. For tour dates and other information about the 2025 CAPA Summer Movie Series, visit www.capa.com/capa-summer-movie-series.
Single tickets ($5) and CAPA Summer Movie Series 10-packs ($40), good for any film in any combination, are on sale now. Tickets can be purchased in-person at the CAPA Ticket Center (39 E. State St.), online at www.capa.com, or by phone at (614) 469-0939. Ticket 10-packs will be available through Sunday, August 3.
