PALACE THEATRE COLUMBUS, OHIO

Dear Broadway Patrons,

I can’t tell you how much I love SIX, and I definitely can’t tell you how much I love that we’re hosting these fabulous queens at the Palace! Get it? Queens? Palace?

(I know, I know. I’ll try not to lose my head over it.)

I genuinely love it when we at CAPA and Broadway in Columbus get to share the beautiful Palace Theatre with our Broadway audiences. And while I know you — especially our subscribers — feel familiar and at home at the Ohio Theatre, I hope you, too, love getting to visit this other jewel among our Downtown theatres.

The Palace is a genuine, beloved Columbus landmark. CAPA was fortunate to be given ownership and stewardship of the Palace from Katherine LeVeque in 1989. In keeping with its early history as a busy vaudeville show house, the Palace is now CAPA’s “workhorse” theatre, hosting perhaps the most varied slate of shows anywhere.

Next year, the Palace will turn 100 years old. That’s a birthday we plan to share with the entire community. You’re going to start hearing more about our celebration plans very soon. (Visit capa.com and sign up for our emails so you don’t miss any of this information.)

In the meantime, CAPA will be making birthday plans, and we’ll, of course, continue to present and produce the best in live entertainment, film, educational programming and more that you’ve come to expect.

Thanks, as always, for being a part of the Broadway in Columbus experience.

KEEPING SIX A HIT

Producers Kenny Wax and Kevin McCollum discuss the appeal of the majestic musical.

SIX opened on Broadway with a bang. Even though the show was set to open on March 12, 2020 (the fateful day that Broadway shut down), when it officially opened on October 3, 2021, SIX had already filled the Lena Horne Theatre (then the Brooks Atkinson) to over 100 percent capacity in its first week. Audiences were clamoring for the queens.

In the spring of 2022, the musical penned by newcomers Toby Marlow and Lucy Moss earned eight Tony Award nominations, including one for Best Musical, and won best score and best costume design of a musical.

SIX didn’t just begin as a hit — it has continued to be one. But what exactly is the fuss about?

The joy and celebratory atmosphere inherent in the pop-concert style helped launch the show with strength, said producers Kenny Wax and Kevin McCollum. As did the buzz from its London and pre-Broadway Chicago mounting.

But what bolstered that power and created longevity, they said, is the show’s wide appeal. “In its construction, as an 80-minute nonlinear musical, it breaks certain theater taboos but has managed to connect with a younger audience due to it being so fantastically whip-smart funny, clever, original and self-aware,” Wax told Broadway News. And while young audiences have certainly latched onto SIX, it’s not to the

exclusion of other demographics. As McCollum said, “This is a show for everyone.”

Of course, it’s been necessary to communicate that in the production’s branding. “The energy in our theater is off the charts and all of our messaging has explored different ways of saying that to different audiences,” McCollum said. “Theater is a destination, and we find ways to keep our audiences engaged with mementos and special moments.”

What’s more, the musical encourages repeat customers — and sees a lot of them. “Take any straw poll from a Broadway performance of SIX and you can be assured that many of the audiences are seeing the show for at least the second time,” Wax said. “We are in a constant dialogue with our fans both old and new, and we endeavor to keep the show on the tip of everyone’s tongue,” McCollum added.

SIX has also tended to change the full-time cast of six queens at once, as they did in December 2022 and 2023. “There aren’t any hard and fast rules — actually on occasions one or two people have left the company due to offers on other shows and have been replaced out of necessity,” Wax said. That said, he continued, “As a general rule, we feel that the best results occur when a full company can rehearse the show together from day one.”

“Anytime you have the opportunity to bring multiple queens in at the same time,” McCollum added, “you’re creating an environment which allows them to grow together as a company.”

“Recently we brought the front-line queens from the Aragon Company (the first touring company) into the Lena Horne because they were so exceptional and worked amazingly well as a team,” Wax said. “It’s the wonder of the collective performance that keeps the show going alongside its empowering message which is the strength of the show.” In addition to that message, the music continues to spread.

“Across all platforms, the songs from the show have streamed almost one billion times,” Wax said. “That is incredible reach for a mid-scale show without the blockbuster marketing budgets of other shows.”

“As one of the original U.K. producers, I find it incredible that our very British story about six women who were all married to the same man has found an audience in the U.S., not only in New York but also across America with the success of the touring productions,” Wax said. “But of course, the show is about far more than ‘ex wives.’ It’s really about contemporary women who are prepared to fix each other’s crowns and support each other. This is the true message of SIX.”

INSIDE THE DESIGN INNOVATION OF BACK TO THE FUTURE

Video designer Finn Ross on creating onstage time travel.

When video designer Finn Ross took stock of the musical Back to the Future, he zeroed in on the titular scene: when Marty McFly goes… back to the future.

For anyone who has seen the iconic movie, this moment is the climax, when Marty (who previously time-traveled from 1985 back to 1955) attempts to return home to 1985. It involves a Delorean — careening corners and gaining enough speed to reach 88 miles per hour — plus a gigantic spark of electricity. For Ross, it was both the scene most crucial to get right and also the biggest challenge. As Ross said, “For me, it felt like if we don’t do this [right], we’ll lose the audience.”

Ross describes this scene in the film Back to the Future as “incredibly tight” with “almost no dialogue. It’s just cut, cut, cut, action, action, action, action.” The designer yearned to figure this out. “How do we do this onstage? How do we get the tightness, the energy, the excitement, the pace, the visual storytelling of it across to an audience?”

Part of that is the journey Marty takes through Hill Valley on his quest to gain enough speed to travel through time. He races past town landmarks, barreling through the 1955 version of his hometown. The musical’s entire creative team, including Ross, spent hours poring over still frames of the film to ensure accuracy in both time periods. Bob Gale, the film’s Oscar-nominated co-screenwriter and the musical’s book writer, discovered a schematic of Hill Valley, rendered by the movie’s original production designer.

“We basically laid this world out and built that into a 3D model of Hill Valley in both eras,” Ross said. So the video on the upstage LED video wall (which is the full length and height of the stage) accurately depicts Hill Valley. But what renders the Delorean’s ride through this media-supplied world so realistic

David Josefsberg and Lucas Hallauer. Photo by Evan Zimmerman for MurphyMade.

— instead of like a clunky theme-park ride — is Ross’ use of background and foreground.

“The scrim is the foreground, the car is the mid-ground and the world upstage — the LED wall — is the background,” Ross explained. The projections on the scrim and video on the back wall pivot around the car so it appears as though the car is actually winding around these streets. These two façades work together to create a more convincing, stage-wide optical effect.

But the coordination of the images on both surfaces must be exact. “We took this 3D model [rendered from the movie schematic] and put it into a game engine,” said Ross, as if the team were designing a video game. They “placed” a car in the game and equipped it with cameras on the front and back car bumpers. This allowed Ross to understand what angles of the neighborhood a driver would see to the front and rear. He could then shift the viewpoint of the media on the scrim and the LED wall accordingly. “So if the action is sweeping to the left on the upstage, then it’s sweeping to the right downstage,” he said. “It’s all [done] perfectly in time with each other, the colors synchronize, etc.” The stage manager and music director at each performance must align so that the cues for the car’s movement, the video and projections, the lighting, the actors and the orchestrations occur at the right second. And that’s just traveling back to the future.

Ross and the musical’s team also had to travel back in time at the start. The team collectively imagined the stage picture that would communicate time travel to an audience. “Time is linear in our conception of it,” Ross said. But the feeling the public associates with time-travel is as if “the whole world pulls and stretches to this place of abstraction.” Ross, scenic and costume designer Tim Hatley and director John Rando collaborated with a storyboard artist to break down the sequence frame by frame; then the team completed two workshops (one in a warehouse with the musical’s Delorean) to test the technology and hone the design.

The result is the musical’s first image of the Delorean defying time: inky blues, midnight blacks and hints of red streaking across the stage wall. As Ross said, it creates “a feeling of the deep, dark, dangerous storm and that tension and thrill in the air of what is to come.”

Beyond the necessary warping of the space-time continuum to create Back to the Future, Ross collaborated with his fellow designers to use video throughout the musical as a method of illustrating the worlds of 1955 and 1985. In seeking inspiration, Ross drew upon sci-fi illustrations of the 1950s and 1980s. “The ’80s was very shiny, very technology-driven, but in this slightly more cynical way than it was back in the ’50s. It was a lot more industrial and a lot more silvers and pinks — and less hopeful, maybe,” Ross described. “Whereas the sci-fi, the ’50s, was imagining this wild future that was based on nothing more than dreaming, rather than an existing technology set. The ’50s was more naïve and sweet, much more ‘Jetsons.’” Both of these aesthetics are reflected in the show’s overall design: Think the sleek, metallic quality in the song “It Works” (set in 1985) versus the zany, fluorescent look of “21st Century.” From top to bottom, Back to the Future succeeds at pushing the boundaries of theatrical design. And furthermore, if you ask Ross, Back to the Future has innovated the field.

“It felt like a real high point in just how integrated the worlds of scenery, costume, light, etc., were,” said Ross. And he thinks this could pave the way for further onstage feats. “It’ll be very interesting to see when the next big movie comes to the stage how things that people might have avoided adapting before — because they feel too difficult or too hard to land on the stage, [could be done],” he said. Beyond adaptations, Ross is excited about Back to the Future inspiring original stories told through extraordinary design and technology. “I love the idea of someone sitting in the audience watching [our show] and having a eureka moment for their idea — even if it isn’t in theater,” Ross said. “It’s just about realizing the impossible.”

Mary, born February 18, 1516 (later Queen Mary I).

Catherine also had two other children who died as infants, three stillborn children, and several miscarriages.

Religion, sewing, dancing, a bit more religion.

Probably a type of cancer.

Her refusal to accept that her marriage was invalid; her faith; her dramatic speech to Henry when he had her brought to court to seek the annulment of their marriage.

While Henry fought in France in 1513, Catherine was regent during the Battle of Flodden; when James IV of Scotland was killed in the battle, Catherine wanted to send his body to Henry as a present.

Fashion, dancing, flirtation, collecting evangelical works.

Lady-in-waiting to Catherine of Aragon.

Executed on Tower Green, London.

Headlessness; bringing about England’s break with the Pope; having a sixth fingernail.

Because she was fluent in French, Anne would have acted as a translator during the visit of Emperor Charles V to court in 1522.

Adele and Sia. Being the “only one he truly loved”; having two troublesome brothers who fought over the regency of the young Prince Edward after King Henry’s death. While Anne Boleyn was still alive, Henry sent Jane a gift of money which she refused, apparently saying there “was no treasure in this world that she valued so much as her honor.”

Anna visited Katherine Howard once she became queen and bowed down to her.

Probably cancer.

Being chosen from her portrait and then rejected when Henry met her.

When Henry first met Anna of Cleves, he disguised himself, possibly imagining some sort of a romantic reaction. According to a witness, when Henry kissed Anna, she turned away coldly from the hideous stranger molesting her. The witness, Lord Russell, observed that he “never saw His Highness so marvelously astonished.”

Being completely used (and abused) by those with power over her.

From her arrest on November 8, 1541 until her execution three months later, Katherine stayed under house arrest at Syon House; in late January of 1542, an act was passed in Parliament that rendered it treason for a woman to become the king’s wife without “plain declaration before of her unchaste life,” meaning Henry could have her killed.
