STORY BY Broadway.com Staff
Les Misérables is wowing audiences all over the place! But before you join the crusade, it’s time for a little history lesson. Wait, don’t leave! Even if you failed history class, you can get an A+ in Les Miz trivia by reading this fun (and mostly historically accurate) timeline of the story, from the classic Victor Hugo novel to the celebrated musical by Alain Boublil and Claude-Michel Schonberg.
1789 The French Revolution begins. This happens way before any of the stuff in Les Miz takes place, so if you overhear an old lady sitting in front of you in the theater telling her husband the musical is about “the French Revolution,” go ahead and challenge her to a duel.
1802 Les Misérables author Victor Hugo was born in Besancon, France. His father is a high-ranking officer in Napoleon’s army, while his mother is supposedly sleeping with General Victor Lahorie—he is executed for plotting against Napoleon by the time little Victor turns 10.
1815 The Bourbon Restoration begins, and all those stuffy royals who were overthrown during the French Revolution return to power. This is also when all of the (fictional) stuff in Les Miz starts happening: Jean Valjean is released on parole, Cosette and Éponine are born, Fantine’s lover leaves (before autumn comes and all of those nighttime thunder tigers start showing up), etc.
1821 Napoleon Bonaparte dies, and those pesky Bourbons remain in power. This is right around the time Jean Valjean becomes the (fake) mayor of Montreuil-sur-Mer, foiling Javert even though he looks practically the same, just with longer hair and a beard. 1824 Louis XVIII dies and is replaced by his brother, Charles X, who changes France’s political structure from a constitutional monarchy to a less democratic model. Boooo! In Les Miz, Jean Valjean raises Cosette as his own daughter, and she presumably does a lot of darning socks, needlepoint and other indoor activities.
1832 General Lamarque is dead! Revolutionaries build makeshift barricades all over the city and the June Rebellion begins—but things get crazy, French soldiers shoot a lot of people, and the whole thing lasts less than 24 hours. Meanwhile, Victor Hugo finds himself stuck in an alley for hours, hiding from the crossfire. In the book and musical, this is the battle that kills Enjolras, Éponine and Gavroche (and well, uh, pretty much everyone).
1833 Well, the uprising fails and until 1848, when another revolution shakes things up, life is just as miserables as it was before. But in Les Miz, Cosette and Marius get married, hooray! Also, Jean Valjean dies. Noo! (In the book, Valjean passes away six months after the wedding, but he dies in the musical while Cosette is still wearing her wedding dress. You know, for drama.)
1862 Les Misérables is published. It’s 85 billion pages. (OK, fine, it’s 1,488 pages, same thing.) A mob of political bookworms storm the stores in Paris, and all 7,000 copies sell out in 24 hours. Hugo, meanwhile, is living in exile in Belgium ever since having a bit of a tiff with Napoleon III (he openly called the ruler a traitor to France).
1909 The first Les Misérables film adaptation is released, starring Maurice Costello as Jean Valjean and William V. Ranous as Javert. It paves the way for 14 subsequent movies and TV shows based on the powerful story.
1980 Composer Claude-Michel Schonberg and lyricists Alain Boublil and Jean-Marc Natel create a French concept album based on Victor Hugo’s celebrated novel. Oui, it’s in French. The first stage adaptation is presented at the Palais des Sports, a Paris sports arena, where it runs for three months. A few years later, director Peter Farago gives Cameron Mackintosh the album and asks him if he would produce an English version.
1985 Les Misérables opens at the Barbican Centre in London, starring Colm Wilkinson as Jean Valjean, Roger Allam as Javert, Patti LuPone as Fantine, Michael Ball as Marius, Rebecca Caine as Cosette and Frances Ruffelle as Éponine. The reviews are comme ci, comme ça, but don’t worry—fans love it and it transfers to the West End’s Palace Theatre.
1987 Les Misérables opens at the Broadway Theatre, with Colm Wilkinson reprising the role of Jean Valjean. Frank Rich of The New York Times writes, “If anyone doubts that the contemporary musical theater can flex its atrophied muscles and yank an audience right out of its seats, he need look no further than the Act I finale of Les Misérables.” C’est vrai! The production nabs nine Tony Awards, including Best Musical, before transferring to the Imperial Theatre in 1990.
2006 A new production of the now-universally beloved musical opens at Broadway’s Broadhurst Theatre, only three years after the original New York production closed. Audiences prove that they’re not sick of hearing the people sing. What started as a six-month engagement turns into a two-year Broadway run.
2012 Universal Pictures releases Les Misérables on the big screen, starring Tony winner Hugh Jackman as Jean Valjean, Oscar winner Russell Crowe as ruthless inspector Javert, Anne Hathaway as desperate mother Fantine, future Tony winner Aaron Tveit as Enjolras, future Oscar winner Eddie Redmayne as Marius and future Emmy winner Amanda Seyfried as Cosette. Helmed by Tom Hooper, the actors sing live on set, Hathaway cuts her hair for real (and wins an Oscar for her performance—not her haircut).
2014 Les Misérables returns to the Imperial Theatre. The new, restaged version of the beloved musical directed by Laurence Connor and James Powell features Ramin Karimloo as Jean Valjean (who reprised the role after starring in the Toronto production), Will Swenson as Javert, Caissie Levy as Fantine, Tony winner Nikki M. James as Éponine, Andy Mientus as Marius and Samantha Hill as Cosette.
2022 The current national tour Les Misérables launches in Cleveland, Ohio, and is still running strong. Audiences are ready to storm the barricades again!

A Tony Award winner for her work on Peter and the Starcatcher, costume designer Paloma Young has brought her expertise and vision to the Broadway stage once again with her work on & Juliet. In a Building Broadway segment on The Broadway Show with Tamsen Fadal, Broadway.com Managing Editor Beth Stevens sat down with Young to discuss her inspiration and the process behind crafting the costumes for this high-energy jukebox musical.
Set to Swedish record producer and songwriter Max Martin’s pop hits from the late ‘90s and early 2000s, & Juliet is a bold reimagining of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, with the iconic character of Juliet choosing her own fate instead of succumbing to tragedy. But Young’s design challenges began long before diving into the show’s eclectic musical mix. Early on, she knew she couldn’t just rely on straight period costumes. The show’s modern spin on Shakespeare meant finding a way to merge the old-world elegance of Elizabethan times with the bold, casual energy of the late '90s and early aughts streetwear. And with choreographer Jennifer Weber’s athletic choreography in the mix, this was a task requiring both ingenuity and precision.
Young explained, “This show, because it wants to look quite broken in, has been a really fun challenge to figure out how to make things that are hardy enough to be danced in eight times a week. And so there are a lot of tweaks, especially in anything that has boning, corset, like traditional corseting structure. We’ve added a lot of stretch panels—they’re built more like ballet bodices, so there’s a lot more stretch in them. There are a lot of secrets to these costumes. Oh, so many secrets!”
For Young, it was about fusing the best of both worlds: the timelessness of Shakespeare with the iconography of pop stars, creating something that resonated both with fans of classic theater and modern pop culture. “We want these costumes to look like they’re being maintained by a scrappy troupe of actors,” Young said. “The concept of our design only improves the more that these costumes get repaired, broken down and repaired.”
In & Juliet, the cast doesn’t simply wear costumes—they wear history. Young incorporated not just Shakespearean silhouettes, but also subtle nods to the personalities of pop icons like Britney Spears and Katy Perry, weaving their influence into the narrative. “The thing is, [the music] is already in my blood. I love pop music, and I have experienced many highs and lows in my life with this being the soundtrack of my life. And I love pop stars.”
When it came to Juliet’s transformation, especially in Act II, Young leaned into this pop cultural inspiration. “For her new look for Act II, we’d already established that the color for France was blue. So I was like, well obviously she needs to be in Britney Spears’ denim from the Britney-Justin red carpet denim moment!”
The costumes were not only about aesthetic choices but also functionality. Young’s designs had to endure the wear and tear of Broadway performances, especially given the show’s physical choreography. The challenge was particularly evident when working with athletic materials like those used by brands like Nike and Adidas. “In some ways, Nike and Adidas were the bane of my existence ’cause they made their clothes too well,” Young laughed. The fabrics designed to withstand daily physical activity made it difficult to break down the costumes to look wornin and vintage, but through persistence and a dedicated team, the costume team maintained the vibrancy of modern fashion while appearing lived-in and real. Young’s attention to detail also extended to the supporting characters. “I wanted people to be able to look at each individual character and see a potential story in the depth and layers of their costume,” she explained. “In the players, when everyone is gathering to read the end of Shakespeare’s play and put on their show, they’re in their rehearsal costumes. A lot of the actors, the players, have T-shirts, sweatshirts, and old show swag from Shakespeare’s other shows.” These “rehearsal T-shirts” subtly reflect their connection to the history of Shakespeare’s work, adding another layer of storytelling to the design.
For Young, the magic of & Juliet lay not only in the costumes’ ability to look like they belonged to a troupe of actors living through their performance, but also in how each individual costume told a story that extended beyond the stage. “It’s a challenge,” Young says, “but it’s been so rewarding. We get to tell these beautiful stories through these costumes, and even though they might be patched up, that’s what makes them feel alive.”
Young’s innovative approach to creating costumes that bridge time periods and seamlessly combine the physical demands of a Broadway show with the bold aesthetic of pop culture has been a highlight of & Juliet. As a designer who’s no stranger to award-winning work, she continues to set the stage for fresh, exciting interpretations of how we view both costume design and the stories we tell through them.
& Juliet is scheduled to come to Broward Center starting January 13, 2026. For more information and features, head to Broadway.com.

CAMERON MACKINTOSH (Producer) for over 50 years has remained the world’s most prolific producer of musicals with dozens of his productions either in performance or in preparation around the world. As well as co-producing Hamilton in London his record-breaking original productions include Les Misérables, The Phantom of the Opera, Cats, Miss Saigon, Mary Poppins (co-produced with Disney), Little Shop of Horrors, Side By Side By Sondheim, Tom Foolery and Five Guys Named Moe, all of which continue to be performed regularly around the world. He is also the producer and owner of Lionel Bart’s great musical Oliver! and both producer and devisor of Sondheim’s Putting It Together and most recently Old Friends. His other modern reinventions of classic musicals include My Fair Lady, Follies, Half A Sixpence and Barnum. In 2013, alongside Working Title Films and Universal, Cameron produced Oscar, Golden Globe and BAFTA award-winning film adaptation of Les Misérables, which has become one of the most successful movie musicals of all time. The latest sell-out staged concert of Les Misérables produced in London for nearly 250 record breaking performances is now due to go on a World Tour starting in the autumn of 2024. He owns and operates eight historic London theatres which have all been spectacularly rebuilt and refurbished for the 21st century. The Sondheim, formerly known as the Queen’s, has been rebuilt and renamed in honor of Cameron’s great friend, theatrical

legend Stephen Sondheim. Music Theatre International, the world’s largest owner of secondary rights of many of the greatest musicals ever written, is now one of Cameron’s companies. In 1990, Cameron inaugurated the Chair of Contemporary Theatre at St. Catherine’s College in Oxford University, with Stephen Sondheim as his first visiting professor, and has since hosted some of the greatest names in the arts of all time. Combining twin careers as a journalist/lyricist, he contributed regular lyrics for the BBC’s famous satire series “That Was the Week That Was” and had also written lyrics for the French singer Charles Aznavour (“Yesterday When I Was Young,” “She,” etc.). It was Kretzmer’s work with Aznovour, as well as having seen and admired his work on the musical, Our Man Crichton, that inspired Cameron to invite him to join the team to write the English lyrics for Les Misérables.
