In the early years of his young adult life C S Lewis believed the story of Christ’s birth was nothing more than feel-good myth. That all changed after a particular encounter with his great friend and fellow author, J.R.R. Tolkien, later author of men loved mythology in general, Tolkien was convinced that the Jesus myth was the one true myth. That was the start of Lewis’ journey from atheism to Christianity. From that point on, Christmas, for Lewis, took on an entirely different meaning.
Here we find him at his home near Oxford on Christmas Eve hosting a group of Americans who are Christmassing in England. They are about to experience an unforgettable assortment of Yuletide recollections which stimulates a whole range of emotions –curiosity, laughter, gladness and even some tears. Above all, they will discover how that encounter with Tolkien forever changed his Christmas celebrations.
DAVID PAYNE “Auditions for this theatrical production to be staged at Nashville’s prestigious Tennessee Performing Arts Center (TPAC) in 1996. Payne, who had never been on stage before but who did have a British accent decided to audition to hope for a minor part. He staggered everybody (including himself) when he won the lead role of C.S. Lewis. Though he did not know it at the time, a successful acting career had been launched! The TPAC production sold out, Lewis’ stepson Douglas Gresham flew in for the opening night and director Sylvia Boyd said of Payne afterward, “I took a chance on someone who had never acted before but was rewarded with a performance of great power and sensitivity – I felt we had found the real C.S. Lewis!”
During rehearsals for Shadowlands Payne was given a copy of A Grief Observed, Lewis’ diary of grief following the death of his American wife, Joy. Captivated by the brutal honesty of a man bearing his soul, Payne memorized the whole book and then adapted it into a one-man show, Mist in the Mourning. Premiered at TPAC, where all three performances sold out, he then toured this production extensively throughout the U.S. Following these performances, Payne was very often peppered with lots of questions about Lewis. He was always very happy to answer these questions and then one day, a thought struck him: “Wouldn’t it be fun if Lewis himself could answer these questions?” That’ s when he wrote An Evening with C.S. Lewis, basing the show around the questions that people kept asking and the pivotal occurrences in Lewis’ life. Now it has become his flagship production with over 800 performances. Payne’s first encounter with C.S. Lewis was when, as a teenager, he was given a copy of Lewis’ best-selling book The Screwtape Letters. Little did he realize that some 40 years later he would be gaining a reputation for his portrayals of its famous author. He has played Lewis in a number of productions of Shadowlands, in his self-penned Weep for Joy, in numerous presentations of An Evening with C.S. Lewis (My Life’s Journey), and St Jack & The Dragon, a touching yet sometimes hilarious account about the relationship between Lewis and his adopted mother, Janie.

DAVID PAYNE
He never dreamed of being an actor. Most actors had fantasies of being onstage from their youth, but David Payne studied to be an engineer. He liked numbers and planning and strategy. He liked order and structure, so any career in the arts was far from his thinking as a youth, growing up in the south of London. He was destined for a life of calculators and slide rules.
Yet after just a few short years as a structural engineer, David found himself pulled into the music and entertainment business. He and his two partners formed a groundbreaking company that encompassed a record label, publishing, event promotion, a magazine and artist management. He became an expert in crunching the numbers and making the business side of the music industry work.
In fact, David was still in the music business in the 1990s, when he was asked to come over to the U.S. and oversee a British record label’s operations in the States. He was just wrapping up his contract and considering whether to make the trip back to the U.K. when a flier arrived, advertising auditions for a play about C.S. Lewis… a play called Shadowlands
“British accent a help,” the advertisement read. A bit bored, a bit intrigued and with no hope of
getting anything more than a walk-on role, David Payne scooted along to the audition… just to see what might happen.
Well as it turned out, a lot happened. Since landing the role of C.S. Lewis in that original play, David Payne has become the world’s foremost actor in the world of Lewis. He has performed as C.S. Lewis in more than 1000 productions, in front of nearly 750,000 people. Requests for his show, An Evening with C.S. Lewis come from all over the world, although he has mainly restricted his performances to the U.S., the U.K. and Canada. Even so, he still hasn’t been able to fulfill all the requests for engagements.
“Never in a million years did I think I would ever be a performer on stage,” he says from his dressing room in Chicago’s Broadway Theatre. “And never did I think that I would enjoy it so very, very much.”
He’s not the only one who enjoys it. There almost seems to be a magical connection between Payne and his audiences. Throughout the entire 90 minutes, audience members feel as if they’re in the presence of the great author, scholar and humorist as Payne completely embodies the role. During the performance you can hear a pin drop in between all the infectious laughter and the occasional sob coming from the audience and at the end, the result is almost always the same… an instantaneous standing ovation.
So while David Payne never ended up making his career as an engineer, he has managed to engineer one thing… he’s made audiences all over the world fall in love with one of the most enduring and endearing characters in all of literature.

TPAC strives to present welcoming and accessible experiences in the performing arts and arts education for everyone.
Accessible services include parking, elevators, wheelchair seating, use of a TPAC wheelchair, designated restrooms, and services for patrons with limited hearing and vision. Sensory Friendly kits and infrared assisted listening devices are available at no charge and may be picked up at the patron accessibility kiosk in the lobby. TPAC offers American Sign Language, Open Captioning, Audio Description, and Braille programs on the Sunday matinee in the HCA Healthcare / TriStar Health Broadway at TPAC Season, presented in partnership with Nissan. Large print programs are available for Broadway at TPAC shows. Special accessibility requests and concerns may be discussed in advance by emailing Access@TPAC.ORG.

Restrooms for Jackson Hall are located one level down from the 6th Avenue entrance, and on each level inside the theater. Restrooms for Polk Theater are located down the stairs to the left of the entrance to the orchestra level and on the tier level. Booster Seats are available on a first-come first served basis, please inquire with an usher upon entrance to the theater.
Bars and Concessions are located in the Orchestra and Tier level lobbies for most performances.
An ATM is on G-Level, near the security desk at the Deaderick Street entrance to the building.
All electronic devices including cell phones, watch alarms, cameras, and recorders should be turned off prior to the show.
