Strategiesto helpall childrenwith homework

Helping primary-aged children with homework can set the stage for a positive learning experience Here are some practical tips to support your child, including those with special educational needs (SEN):

1. Set Up a Homework Routine

Keep it consistent: Choose a regular time each day for homework so children know when to get started

Create a cosy homework spot: A comfortable, quiet space without too many distractions helps children focus

Break it down: For younger children, homework can be tiring! Break tasks into smaller steps with short breaks in between to keep them interested

2 Use Visual Reminders

For all children: Try a colourful checklist or visual chart so your child can see what they need to do and tick it off as they go

For Children with SEN: A visual schedule with pictures or symbols can help children stay on track and feel more in control. These can be removed on completion, which will motivate and encourage children.

3. Make Homework Fun with Goals and Rewards

Set small goals: Turn homework time into a game by setting little goals, like finishing five math problems before taking a short break

Celebrate effort: Give a thumbs-up, a sticker, or a few minutes of free play when they reach a goal. Positive feedback can be a great motivator!

4 Give Short Movement Breaks

Stretch and move: Short breaks between tasks can make a big difference. Encourage a quick stretch or a little walk around the room

Sensory breaks for children with SEN: Simple sensory activities like playing with a stress ball or doing a breathing exercise can help them reset. Try not to force children to complete work if they are dysregulated or finding the work overwhelming. You can always revisit another time.

5 Encourage Them to Try on Their Own (with a little help)

Be their guide, not their answer key: Encourage children to try things out by themselves before stepping in to help. This builds confidence and problem-solving skills.

Start with examples: Show how to do a problem together first Then let them try one on their own as they feel more comfortable

6. Stay Positive and Patient

Celebrate progress, no matter how small: Every effort counts! Praise their hard work and remind them it’s okay to make mistakes

Stay patient: Some children need more time to finish tasks. Let them go at their own pace to help build confidence and a love for learning.

By making homework time relaxed, positive, and fun, you’re helping your child build great learning habits for life
