Welcome

I’m delighted to welcome you to my first edition of Big Blue World as SUT President. We’re only a short way into the year and already is shaping up to be an incredibly exciting and productive 2024 in the marine space –and, indeed for the SUT itself.

I recently attended the Oceanology Conference, which brought together a huge range of knowledge, experience and expertise from a diverse range of marine-based industries. I was fortunate to be part of some interesting and inspiring discussions over the course of the conference – focussing in on the innovative work and exploration which will help to shape the direction of the SUT over the coming years.

At the centre of the conference was a tribute to Don Walsh - a truly extraordinary individual - who will be remembered for decades to come as one of the most important figures in ocean exploration, not only for his journey to the deepest point in the World’s ocean with his dive to the bottom of the Mariana Trench in 1960, but for the huge contribution he’s made to our understanding of and work in the oceans. Don’s lifetime of contribution to ocean technology and pioneering spirit will, I have no doubt, live on in inspiring future innovations and discoveries for generations to come, not least through Professor Peter Girguis, who received the SUT’s Captain Don Walsh Award for Ocean Exploration this year; his work on deep ocean life is both fascinating, and vital to inform how we build a sustainable blue economy.

From my own perspective as the new President of the SUT, I have already met so many people that have been, and continue to be, inspired by Don. It’s with this pioneering spirit in mind that I look forward to playing my role in championing the work of the SUT and the wider ocean community – supporting the continuing development of the ocean economy, ocean energy and marine innovation, as we tackle the twin challenges of climate change and biodiversity loss.

There is an ever-increasing need to act swiftly to meet these challenges head on and I hope to utilise insights from my current role in renewable energy at Ørsted, as well as my experiences at the Carbon Trust and as chair of the Offshore Wind Industry Council, to help develop and evolve plans to tackle these issues head on. It’s both a challenging and exciting time in the marine space, but one I think we can all agree is vital to get right – and with a sense of urgency. With the array of talent, knowledge, innovative thinking I have already seen in my time so far as SUT President, I’m confident that we can make real progress and help lead the growth of a successful, sustainable blue economy based on strong science and ground-breaking innovation.

SUT at Oceanology International

12-14 March 2024, ExCel London

SUT staff, corporate and individual members, Special Interest Groups, Branch committee members, and volunteers came together for Oi24 among almost over 7,500 visitors from 90 countries with almost 450 exhibitors at the London-based ocean innovation and technology showcase that is Oceanology International at ExCel.

Ocean Industry professionals from technology, engineering, science and academic fields met, discussed and displayed cutting-edge technologies and solutions, announced collaborations, awards and developments during this international gathering.

In addition to supporting Catch the Next Wave, SUT augmented the conference with its associated events on UXO in the Marine Environment, Women in Industry and Ocean Careers during the week. We thank all of those speakers who so generously gave their time to speak in these sessions. SUT would like to congratulate RX on their new initiative of the Oi Skills and Career Trail which included SUT members Elevate Offshore and UTM Consultants. Skills, careers and education remain fundamental to SUT’s focus on ocean technology, underwater and subsea engineering and science and the communities we serve.

Professor Peter Girguis travelled from Harvard University to accept the Captain Don Walsh Award, awarded jointly by SUT and MTS. Peter’s presentation following the keynote session was fascinating, enthralling and left everyone in the audience ruing that we had not had the foresight to record this session. We urge members to listen to the SUT’s Underwater Technology

THE HISTORY OF SCIENTIFIC DIVING

Commercial and military diving have long histories going back many decades and indeed many centuries. Diving for scientific research and study of the marine and aquatic environment is much more recent, and only expanded into a profession with a career structure after 1950. The Historical Diving Society (HDS) publishes the International Journal of Diving History (IJDH). This annual journal does exactly what it says on the label, and presents major illustrated articles and features from many countries, all on the subject of the historical development of diving, its technology, and achievements.

Copies of the most recent and past issues can be purchased at the HDS website

During the second half of the 20th century diving of all kinds evolved and increased in scale very rapidly, and this includes diving for scientific research. As a member of SUT and of the Underwater Association from the 1960s onwards I was engaged in many of the organisations that promoted scientific diving, and the safety regime that was eventually recognised in the HSE Diving at Work Regulations 1997.

I have written an article on these events for the IJDH which is published in issue number 14, available from the HDS website.

If the HDS has no more printed copies, please contact me directly if you wish to read the article. Click

International expansion for CONSUB in India following project success

Energy engineering consultancy, CONSUB, has formed CONSUB India Private Ltd, appointing Hanoze Thakkar as Director to lead their expansion in India. This follows a number of recent successes for the company in this region.

Milestone

A significant milestone was achieved by CONSUB on the ONGC (NELP) Block KG-DWN-98/2 deepwater development project, by supporting the commencement of “first oil” on 7 January 2024.

This was a huge achievement, and CONSUB was incredibly proud to play a significant role in the project, progressing the economic and energy goals of India, further building towards a strong selfsustaining energy sector.

Background

Following the award of the Project Management Consultancy contract from Oil and Natural Gas Corporation Ltd (ONGC) in 2019, CONSUB assembled a team of over 90 specialist and expert

engineers, including a team in India. This team worked on technical and project management support services for the KG-DWN-98/2 project: one of India’s biggest oil and gas development projects, valued at $5 billion.

Having achieved “first gas” in 2020 and preparing the project for “first oil” in January 2024, the project will continue with the development of the remaining infrastructure throughout 2024 to achieve the overall development requirements.

Frank Nunan, Managing Director of CONSUB said: “We’ve achieved a lot in this project and there’s more to do. ONGC predict this project will increase its total oil and gas production by 11% and 15% respectively, which we think is awesome and we’re pleased to play our part.

“Additionally, we’re very much looking forward to progressing further new in-country opportunities to support our clients and increase our overall footprint in India.”

Greensea IQ and Ocean Power Technologies Extend Strategic Partnership to enhance Maritime Domain Awareness Solution

Greensea IQ, a leading provider of marine robotics software and maritime solutions, is proud to strengthen its partnership with Ocean Power Technologies (OPT), a pioneer in renewable ocean energy solutions following its latest contract extension.

This significant extension underscores the longevity and strength of their partnership, which began in 2021, and signifies a deepening of their collaboration and shared vision in advancing maritime technologies and solutions.

Leveraging its versatile open architecture platform OPENSEA, Greensea IQ will continue to work with OPT to develop the next generation of OPT’s Maritime Domain Awareness Solution (MDAS).

OPT is renowned for its over-the-horizon (OTH) MDAS-equipped PowerBuoy products. The OPT PowerBuoy serves as an innovative renewable energy solution, harnessing its power from a combination of solar, wind, and wave activity. MDAS is integrated with OPT PowerBuoys to monitor and collect data in marine protected areas, mitigate illegal fishing, provide automated vessel traffic data for ports, or support extended offshore monitoring and data collection capabilities for defense and security applications.

The new multi-year contract extension, which will run through to May 2025, will see Greensea IQ’s advanced technologies, including OPENSEA and Safe C2, play a pivotal role in the evolution of OPT’s MDAS, with Greensea IQ and OPT collaborating on all aspects of system and software design and development, including command and control, communications, and data transfer, including integration of OPT’s unmanned surface vehicles (USVs) into the overall architecture.

“The collaboration of our technologies will prove to be an ‘easy’ lift in that we already have the working pieces, such as user interface, command and control, communication, and sensor integration. The only addition required is the integration of data transfer to the cloud.” said Ben Kinnaman, CEO of Greensea IQ.

Initially developed for specific defense purposes, the dual-purpose technologies, OPENSEA and Safe C2, are being reworked to adapt to and support OPT’s objectives in maritime security and awareness and will enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of its ocean energy and defense solutions. This partnership will encompass integration of sensory data, user interface optimization, secure data transfer to the cloud, and integrating edge computing and storage solutions. Together, these advancements will enable seamless communication, and robust command and control capabilities.

“We are excited to continue strengthening our partnership with Ocean Power Technologies and contribute to the evolution of the Maritime Domain Awareness Solution. Our technologies, OPENSEA and SafeC2 are wellpositioned to support and facilitate OPT’s vision.

Commenting on the contract extension, OPT praises Greensea IQ’s technology and the contribution it will bring to the development of MDAS. James Clark, OPT Principal Architect for Mission Systems states “Greensea IQ has been integral to the development of the OPT MDAS platform since the beginning, and we are very pleased to be extending our partnership with Greensea IQ for this next crucial phase of MDAS evolution. Extending our engagement with Greensea IQ signifies our joint commitment to pushing the boundaries of innovation in the maritime industry. We look forward to delivering these advancements with the support of Greensea IQ and its advanced technologies.”

Greensea IQ’s technology aligns seamlessly with OPT’s vision and its work to continue exploring and developing the capabilities of its PowerBuoys, USVs, and MDAS. The synergy between the two companies promises to deliver groundbreaking solutions for the maritime industry and underscores the adaptability and versatility of Greensea IQ’s technology.

SUT Aberdeen AGM and Quiz

OGV Podium, 17 January 2024

Annual General Knowledge

January 2024 saw the SUT Aberdeen Branch hold their AGM, this year alongside a hotly contested Pub Quiz at the OGV Podium. Local members and friends of the Society filled the room with a great buzz with revellers all eager to take the win, and also to learn about past and planned activities of the branch.

Committee member and events lead Chris Wallace did an excellent job of presiding as quizmaster over no less than eight challenging rounds including pub quiz classics such as history, geography, technology, music and movies. Also included as a question was “which year was the SUT founded”? There was no quizmaster’s sparkly jacket on show, but a sparkly bow-tie was an acceptable compromise.

A half-time break allowed some time for the quizzers to replenish drinks, and to get an update on branch activities with the AGM presented by Chair Andrew Connelly. Two new elected

committee members were announced as Ace Awaad (Impact Subsea) and Ross Ingram (Ashtead Technology), the room all shared their congratulations.

The half-time break also included an update on team scoring, only one point between the leaders meant that there was all to quiz for. The final scores were announced as a tie, and after a tense tie-break question, “Give Me A Minute” were announced as the winners and presented with the trophy. Commiserations to “You Know As Much As We Do” who were presented with the wooden spoon!

Special thanks to Chris’ partner Kate who was drafted in to help with tallying up the scores.

The Aberdeen Branch Pub Quiz is planned to be an annual event, with or without an AGM as part of it. We look forward to welcoming everyone back next year for another exciting event!

Always an interesting, quality-focused technology showcase and conference, this year’s Subsea Expo included over 150 exhibitors and over 6,500 delegates.

The 2024 conference opened with an exploration of ‘Navigating the Blue Frontier’, the event’s theme, followed by multiple parallel conference sessions over the three days of the Subsea Expo including latest developments and cross-sector innovation.

foreSEA Your Future on Thursday 22nd February brought a new approach to the STEM day for senior pupils at the Subsea Expo with a parallel programme for college and university students with more than 100 young people visiting the Subsea Expo to learn and be inspired about the subsea and energy industries and the opportunities for the future.

It was a pleasure to host and meet the winners of the SUT President’s Award Ali Hynd and the ROV Club of Mintlaw Academy at the Expo where Moya Crawford, now Past President of SUT met Ali and the students of Mintlaw Academy to present them with this prestigious SUT Award. The enthusiasm of the students was wonderful. The leadership of Ali Hynd in exciting and stimulating the students is a shining example of how a great teacher can create a life-long educational interest for their students, shape young lives and help students find their careers in the underwater, subsea sector so vital to today’s world.

Subsea Imaging and VR

North of England Evening Meeting | Newcastle University, 19 March 2024

Underwater structures were shown in vivid colour at the recent North of England branch event – hosted at the newly revamped Stephenson Building, Newcastle University. There was a great mix of people, including local students and professionals – many of whom studied at Newcastle University, given an overview of the latest in VR, SLAM and LiDAR technology.

The auditorium had full 360° screens – giving the audience a truly immersive experience. The first speaker – Harvey Trent (Fuzzy Logic Studio) demonstrated the power of Gamification – using AR/VR platforms to unlock rapid training and collaboration opportunities. Ian Ellis (3D at Depth)

showcased LiDAR solutions, sharing details of their unique technology approach to overcome the challenge. Kris Moeckell (ROVCO) followed up with insight into Sub-SLAM and its integration with AI capability to enable autonomous survey and feature detection.

Overall, the key message was that this technology is available today – it’s not in the distant future! And, given the cost of survey operations - why not scan as much as possible whilst you are there? Then, can you prepare for operations using your digital twin? The discussion continued with a social gathering at the Crow’s Nest. Cheers to all who attended!
