Welcome from the SUT Chair of Council Hi and welcome to the March 2022 issue of Big Blue World from your newly elected (and first female) Chair of Council, Sue John. This is a role that you most certainly learn ‘on the job’. March has been a busy month for the SUT and myself as we kicked off this year’s Oceanology International (Oi) 2022 with The Royal Institution, London hosting an evening with three eminent deep sea explorers, Patrick Lahey, Victor Vescovo and retired U.S. Navy Captain Don Walsh. This was my first taste of Oi. It was three days of interviews, the Don Walsh Award, and SUT-led panel sessions, but most importantly I had the chance to meet our volunteers. You will read more about Oi 2022 later in this issue.

For now, I want to thank our members for their continued support during the pandemic. The SUT is a learned society; we exist to bring together organisations and individuals with a common interest in Sue John underwater technology, ocean science and offshore engineering. We rely on the expertise of our members to provide the information and understanding of the subsea world for our webinars, training courses, podcasts, panel sessions, articles, and much, much more, continuing our remit of knowledge dissmemination. The podcasts and many of the webinars in particular are freely in the public domain, allowing us to reach even more people, and, hopefully, future members. Thank you all of you who represent the SUT on these platforms, who share our news and activities on social media, who continue to support our endeavours, and who put us ‘out there’, but also thank you to the SUT staff who work hard in the background, bringing it all together.

As we all now start to emerge from COVID restrictions, we will return to face-to-face social events, evening meetings, conferences, and training courses. In May, the SUT will be at All-Energy in Glasgow. You can find us at stand Q03. Also in May, SUT Perth, Australia, are running a face-to-face Subsea Awareness Course, including two site visits. SUT-US are hosting a series of networking events plus their Subsea Awareness Course.

Next year sees the return of the International Offshore Site Investigation & Geotechnics (OSIG) Conference on 12th-14th September 2023 in London. The call for papers is now open - you can see more information on the conference themes and the scientific committee and find out how to submit your abstract at www.osig2023.com. The deadline for submissions is 31 May 2022.

With the support of one of our past presidents, Ralph Rayner, we have been busy working in conjunction with the Marine Technology Society (MTS) to launch a suite of accreditations including the Chartered Marine Technologist and the Chartered Marine Scientist. These are globally recognised and aimed at subsea professionals who have at least 5 years’ experience and who can demonstrate having a high level of knowledge, understanding and professional competence. As you can see this is going to be a very busy year, and one that I am enjoying hugely so far.

Suzanne comes from a technical background with more than three years of experience in the digital marketing field.

SUT+ Aberdeen Stepping into 2022, the SUT+ Aberdeen branch has seen exponential growth in attendance to our monthly Webinar series, and with Covid-19 restrictions slowly lifting, we have been able to host our first in-person events since the beginning of the Pandemic. We have been floored by the amount of interest and positivity shown by our members during this challenging time, and we have achieved an exciting backlog of upcoming Webinars and inperson events that we very much look forward to sharing.

Some highlights from the branch are: • From 2021 to today, we have hosted 12 Webinars on topics such as ‘Developing Scotland’s Hydrogen Economy’, ‘Halo Subsea Battery System’, ‘Subsea Umbilicals’ and more - which are now regularly seeing over 100 attendees per TechFest’s Mock COP 26 STEM event session from across the world!

• We presented a ‘Job Seeking Support Session’ for students and recent graduates.

• We have continued our successful SUT+ Newsletter which has been well-received by subscribers and has aided in spreading local industry news.

• We have reached over 700 followers on LinkedIn! Future events to look out for are: a Webinar on FLASC’s ‘Hydro-Pneumatic Energy Storage Solution’, an upcoming Webinar from Seaway 7 on Offshore Wind and our second-time presenting ‘Insights into Thesis Preparation’. SUT Panel on Underwater Robotics - Polar AUVs In the 50 years of Autonomous Underwater Vehicle (AUV) deployments in Polar Regions never have expectations been as high as in 2022. We, and generations to come, may be impacted by information brought back from recent AUV missions to the so-called Doomsday (Thwaites) Glacier. On the other side of Antarctica, the Endurance 22 expedition’s AUV provided poignant pictures of Sir Ernest Shackleton’s ice-crushed ship lying in the Weddell Sea’s depths.

But, despite modern communications, we do not, today, know if all of those expeditions were successful.

Whatever the outcomes, it is more important than ever for AUV users in the Polar Regions to share technical and operational experiences openly. The good, the bad, the successes, and the failures and mistakes, need to be learnt once and shared. The SUT provides a supportive environment for such sharing, in part through its Polar AUV Best Practices website.

New contributions would be most welcome, to the benefit of all.

SUT News - SUT US Patricia Varela Recognised with Emerging Leader Award Patricia Varela, Ph.D. (Texas) received the Emerging Leader Award from the Offshore Technology Conference (OTC) in Houston, Texas at the Young Professionals Networking event Young Professionals: Diversify Your Network 2021.

Patricia Varela is a Project Professional based in Texas, focused on geotechnical and geological surveys, risk and reliability studies, geohazard investigations, and integrated site characterisation. Patricia was also highlighted in an article by Women Offshore for her work in the oil and gas industry.

The Emerging Leader program, launched in 2021, recognises one young professional from each of OTC’s sponsoring, endorsing, and supporting organisations.

Emerging Leaders are individuals who are making key technology and/or leadership contributions to the offshore energy sector in their field of work, service to the industry, innovation, or safety performance. Patricia was nominated by Rodolfo Sancio, Ph.D., P.E. (Texas), Senior Principal at Geosyntec.

The OTC is where energy professionals meet to exchange ideas and opinions to advance scientific and technical knowledge for offshore resources and environmental matters. SUT News & Member News Announcement to Society Members on the Contractual Joint Venture Agreement Between MTS and SUT Over the past few years SUT and MTS have begun work to strengthen our collaboration with the goal of enhancing services and benefits to our members. You’ve likely seen the early outcomes of that collaboration - shared publications between the Societies, offering of professional certifications for marine technologists and marine scientists, and launch of the joint Captain Don Walsh Award for Ocean Exploration.

To support further enhancement of services to the collective membership and to help secure greater visibility for both Societies within the global marine science and technology community, MTS and SUT have entered into a formal Contractual Joint Venture agreement. The agreement solidifies existing collaborations and sets a framework for continued collaboration and partnership, in concert with the individual governance of both societies.

MTS and SUT have a common mission to facilitate the effective development and application of ocean science, underwater technology, and offshore engineering to support exploration, understanding, and sustainable use of the ocean and its resources. Through the collaboration supported by this joint venture, the Societies look forward to continuing to deliver value, impact, and support to our membership and the broader subsea, underwater and marine science, technology and engineering communities.

AWS Waveswing gets shakedown at EMEC The initial shakedown testing at EMEC’s Scapa Flow test site in Orkney involved ten significant lifting, marine or diving operations demonstrating the practical deployment, operation and recovery of the Waveswing device. The device has now been recovered to shore for detailed inspection prior to being re-deployed at EMEC’s test site.

This important milestone in the development of the 16 kW Archimedes Waveswing follows successful quayside testing and preparation at Copland’s Dock in Stromness since its arrival in Orkney in late January. Since then several short weather windows have enabled deployment of the anchor and anchor block, umbilical cable and EMEC’s test support buoy, as well as two trial deployments of the Waveswing.

Quayside and marine operations have been carried out by the local Orkney supply chain: installation and recovery operations were completed by Green Marine using the ‘Green Isle’ multicat vessel; test support buoy and umbilical deployments by Leask Marine; and lift operations by Heddle Construction.

Third Annual Captain Don Walsh Award for Ocean Exploration is now Open for Entries

Awarded jointly by the Society for Underwater Technology and the Marine Technology Society, this award recognises outstanding, sustained, international contribution to the development, application, and propagation of marine technology toward the advancement of ocean exploration.

Don Walsh (born 2nd November 1931) is an American oceanographer, explorer, retired naval officer, and marine policy specialist. He and Jacques Piccard were aboard the bathyscaphe Trieste when it made a record descent into the Mariana Trench on January 23, 1960, the deepest point of the world’s oceans.

Only one completed nomination form will be accepted for each candidate. If a completed nomination form has already been accepted for your candidate, you will be notified. Only the information requested on this form will be used in the review of your candidate.

To nominate a candidate for this award, you must send a statement (up to 4000 characters) reflecting the nominee’s qualifications for this award, as well as additional documents which may include letter of support, additional information about nominee, etc.

Achieving Net Zero at sea – reducing carbon emiss

In 2020, UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) set out a bold strategy to reach net zero by 2040. To support this, UKRI asked the National Oceanography Leigh Storey, NOC Centre to lead a project to consider what the future requirements for an ‘oceanographic capability’ might be and how technology might support that transition to net zero – a Net Zero Oceanographic Capability (NZOC).

Additional reports assessing future remote sensing capabilities (satellites), future training needs to support greater use of autonomy, cyber security and the ethical implications of the new technology were also commissioned.

The recommendations on future science requirements, policy and regulation, ship technologies, marine autonomous systems, sensor systems and data ecosystems will lay the foundation for ongoing reductions in CO2e emissions from the current research infrastructure alongside supporting the transition that a future NZOC will require.

Collectively, they aim to embed sustainability across key parts of oceanographic research within the wider, ship sector adaptations starting to happen.

b. Developing new autonomous platforms that can replace ship deployed capability e.g swap out CTDs with gliders.

The drive to reduce global carbon emissions will transform how we conduct oceanographic research expeditions and will see changes both to the current UKRI/NERC ships and the designs for ships of the future. Increasingly, we will depend upon the use of autonomous platforms and sensors in our continuing objective to deliver world-class marine research. The race is on to meet the deadline of 2040 and without doubt, the UK has the skill base and expertise to deliver.

Leigh is heading up a new programme about net zero carbon oceanographic research capability and talks about the challenges of developing new ways of undertaking research at & under the sea with the lowest possible carbon footprint.

This includes new sensors and autonomous systems but also looks at how the research ship fleet can be re-fitted with novel propulsion technology, and eventually be replaced by new ships that are as close to net zero carbon as is technically possible.

Leigh will shortly be joining UKRI-NERC as Senior Responsible Owner for the NZOC transition working with the marine science community, research institutes and centres as well as industry.

NOC equips RRS Discovery & RRS James Cook In early 2021, the National Oceanography Centre enhanced their existing research ships with two RS Aqua WaveRadar REX2 systems, for the RRS Discovery and the RRS James Cook. The RRS Discovery is now equipped with a full REX2 system, while the RRS James Cook REX2 system will be installed later in the year during routine maintenance.

The NOC’s research vessels are multidisciplinary ships, specifically designed for the challenges of 21st century oceanography. Both ships are fitted with state-of-the-art, high-performing instruments and equipment. Combined they are the UK’s primary vessels for oceanographic observation.

Application The capabilities of the REX2 sensor system were chosen by the NOC to provide accurate sea state

intelligence during the ships’ operations such as offboard equipment handling (ROV operations and large profiling payloads etc.) and to provide absolute wave height data and so greater accuracy of real time sea state whilst underway.

Both research vessels have X-band radar systems installed to provide surface wave, current and sea state measurement to the NOC’s research community and also enhance safety at sea and to provide navigational intelligence. Whilst X-band systems provide sea state intelligence from radar imagery over a relatively large spatial scale (several kms from the ship), the wave and sea state data close to the ship is often of lower quality than required for ship operations.

WaveRadar REX2 is a downward facing microwave radar system that delivers exceptionally high-quality wave parameters in the immediate vicinity of the ship. REX2 has been installed on both vessels to enable the scientific engineering team to ground-truth or validate

specifically wave height data for the X-band system whenever the ship is sailing. Furthermore, the wave and sea state intelligence from REX2 will be used whenever the research vessels are carrying out research operations, for instance the deployment of tethered ROV systems or other large and valuable offboard systems. When the vessel deploys these offboard systems, often the ship will be holding position dynamically and is vulnerable to the prevailing wave climate and other features such as rogue waves. REX2 provides direct measurement of ocean waves in the immediate vicinity of the ships in real time, providing reliable wave intelligence to the bridge, to the scientific engineering teams and to any stakeholder with secure internet access to the ship.

The full REX2 system, inclusive of real-time motion-compensated wave processing suite WaveView Connect – and a bespoke mounting frame, is built for the harsh environment of the open ocean and is ideal for the RRS Discovery and the RRS James Cook’s scientific expeditions.

operating in every Ocean, internationally recognised hazardous zone certifications and high-level commissioning support from RS Aqua, WaveRadar REX2 can be used in almost any location around the world. Coupled with WaveView Connect, REX2 is able to deliver motion compensated wave measurements in real time. The GR-2 mounting frame is specifically designed for the WaveRadar REX2. It is designed to provide an extremely stable, rigid platform that complements the high performance of the REX2.

Conclusion These two use cases of the REX2 data – groundtruthing X-band data and real time wave climate observation during ship operations – enable the ship operators and the scientific engineering team to have greater confidence in their understanding of the wave climate in open ocean conditions, whilst also optimising their operations. The end result is an expansion and improvement of the essential ocean variables provided to the oceanographic science community and more efficient and safer work environment at sea.

The Scottish Marine Environmental Enhancement Fund (SMEEF) is an exciting new approach to funding. SMEEF will enable all users enjoying the benefits of marine ecosystem services to voluntarily re-invest in the health and biodiversity of our seas. This will support and safeguard the sustainable growth of those industries into the future as well as building a well-being economy for Scotland.

SMEEF intends to establish an effective long-running, funding mechanism that will: • Help meet the challenges of the climate and biodiversity emergencies by improving marine biodiversity and the environment, • Support marine habitat enhancement projects and enterprises on their journey to investment readiness, • Provide demonstrable corporate social responsibility opportunities, and • Encourage research and development.

Traditional investment funds offer a financial return on investment. Whilst we will be testing ways in which investable projects can be created in the marine environment, SMEEF is focused on improving the natural capital, aiming to offer a return which is expressed more in terms of ecosystem services such as reduced flood risk and increases in biodiversity.

SMEEF will invest in real life projects in Scottish seas and on the coast, where donors can see their investment provide real and lasting improvements to the marine environment and the people who rely upon it for their work and leisure opportunities.

SMEEF is reaching out to ALL the sectors, and their supply chains, who make use of, or have an interest in, the Scottish marine environment.

SUT Member News XOCEAN Expands Leadership Team with Appointment of new CTO Shepard Smith, former Director of the Office of Coast Survey at NOAA boundaries of ocean technology, and we’re really excited to have him leading the next phase of our technical journey. Above all, we share the same vision of transforming ocean data through technology with the purpose of supporting the sustainable growth of the ocean economy.”

XOCEAN, the international ocean data company, are announcing the appointment of Shepard (Shep) Smith as Chief Technology Officer (CTO) in the latest expansion of their leadership team. Smith brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to XOCEAN with his background in hydrographic survey and new technology implementation, having served 28 years as a commissioned officer with the US Department of Commerce National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). At NOAA, Smith rose to the rank of Rear Admiral and was closely involved in advancing state-ofthe-art hydrography and nautical cartography.

His 10 years of working at sea included tours in Alaska, the Pacific, and the Atlantic and Gulf coasts and four years as the Commanding Officer and Chief Scientist of the NOAA Ship Thomas Jefferson. In his final role with NOAA, he served as Director of the Office of Coast Survey, where he oversaw the US national programs in hydrography and nautical cartography. Smith also represented the United States at the International Hydrographic Organisation and regional hydrographic commissions.

Low impact data collection for sustai The identification of optimal locations for renewable energy infrastructure, creation of navigational products to support international shipping, maintenance of subsea assets, environmental research, and numerous other Matt Holland activities related to our Sales Manager oceans all rely on the Americas, XOCEAN collection of data. With the marine environment being a key driver of the global economy and sustaining 40 percent of humans that live within 100km of the coast and nearly a million known species, data is required to ensure both responsible use and protection of this essential resource. This sustainable use should include collecting the required data in an ocean-friendly low impact way.

Ocean data has traditionally been acquired using large, crewed vessels, which emit substantial amounts of carbon from the consumption of

thousands, or even tens of thousands, of litres of fuel per day. With typical speeds of 5 knots or more during operations, and much higher transit speeds, these vessels also pose a threat to marine mammals through collision. While the purpose of the data may be intended to support the oceans, the vessels conventionally used for the collection do not minimize potential environmental effects.

Today there are various Uncrewed Surface Vessels (USVs) and autonomous vehicles for data collection and mapping initiatives, which can help to reduce carbon emissions and other potential environmental influences. With no space requirements for personnel or related facilities onboard the size and fuel consumption can be much less than a traditional vessel.

The design, power source, and other factors will however determine the overall platform capabilities, including environmental limits, endurance and payload (sensor) capacity. Using a USV with a flexible design and a hybrid power system we can reduce carbon emissions while still meeting survey objectives in an operationally efficient and cost-effective way.

Four XOCEAN USVs were used to deliver 12,500kms of geophysical survey for a carbon capture storage project

As an example, the XO-450 USV is the size of an average car with renewable hybrid power and consumes very small volumes of fuel. The resultant carbon emissions are minimal (~0.1% of a conventional vessel) and reduced to the point that they are easily offset for fully carbon neutral operations. This is achieved without compromising power or payload capacity, or data accuracy requirements. Speeds of ~3 knots and operations in challenging weather conditions (Force 6 on the Beaufort Scale) can be consistently achieved throughout 24/7 operations.

The environmentally low impact approach can address even the most stringent data collection specifications defined by energy developers and operators, Hydrographic Offices, and others for seabed object detection, point density, sub bottom penetration and related requirements.

Continued growth of the global ocean economy is driving the need for high-quality data to enable informed decisions and support new developments such as clean energy and decarbonisation projects. At the same time carbon emissions from human activities continue to cause ocean warming and related negative effects, such as the decline of Arctic sea ice. The use of USVs allows us to reduce any potential impact during operations, including mapping projects in sensitive environments like the Arctic for safe navigation in the expanding ice-free areas. Data has an important role in our ongoing interactions with the oceans and if that data can be collected through carbon neutral operations, then we can be that much closer to using our oceans in a sustainable way.

Celebrate All-Energy’s 21st Anniversary SUT was there at the start of All-Energy’s history 21 years ago having been its Learned Society Patron since before the first show was held in Aberdeen in 2001. We’d welcome your early (or later) All-Energy memories.

Reports of Recent Events Into the abyss: exploring the deepest realms of the world’s oceans On Monday 14th March, The Royal Institution, London hosted ‘Into the abyss: exploring the deepest realms of the world’s oceans’ with a prestigious panel made up of oceanographer and renowned explorer Captain Don Walsh, undersea explorer Victor Vescovo, and submarine engineer Patrick Lahey, interviewed by Helen Czerski. The three subsea experts recounted their experiences of diving to the deepest points on Earth, and answered the question ‘how do we explore what lies beneath?’. A superb evening, with excellent conversation, great questions from the audience, and a lot to learn.

This event took place ahead of Victor Vescovo, Caladan Oceanic, and Patrick Lahey, Triton Submarines LLC, being presented with the SUT - MTS Captain Don Walsh Award for Ocean Exploration, in recognition of their achievements during The Five Deeps Expedition, to the deepest point in each of the world’s oceans. They received their Awards at Oceanology International 2022 on 15th March.

Reports of Recent Events

MCE-DD, Deepwater Development, Decarbonizing Deepwater Production MCE-DD returned to London, 12-14 April, in their first face-to-face event in Europe since 2019.

Founded in Amsterdam in 2004, the conference brought together an international audience to discuss deepwater development in hydrocarbons as well as offshore wind and carbon capture utilisation and storage.

In addition to the technical programme, sessions included presentations on macro-industry topics and trends. The conference kicked off with a presentation from David Saul, BP, (and immediate pastChair of SUT) on Resourcing the Energy Transition, Squaring the Circle.

SUT members presented throughout the 2.5 days of the conference: BakerHughes, OneSubsea, WOOD, TechnipFMC, 2H Offshore, University of Exeter, Subsea7, OMVPetrom and Oceaneering as well as a programme with operators, contractors, academia and research and the whole of the supply chain.

Topics on Floating Facilities, FPSOs and Mooring Systems, Composites, Handling Strategies for Gas, CO2, & Hydrogen, Electrification of Subsea Developments and Brownfield Infrastructure were joined by sessions on Renewable Energy & Floating Wind, Renewable Energy & Innovation to Decarbonize. All providing a stimulating programme addressing Subsea Infrastructure Assets – the Changes and the Challenges.

Paul Hillegeist, Director Gulf Quest, cofounder MCE-DD said, ‘It was great to see David Saul, BP and former SUT Chair of Council the industry return to face-to-face engagement at our conference focused on deep water. The organisers would like to thank our speakers, sponsors, Advisory Board and supporters for helping to make this event such a success. Including offshore wind, marine renewables, CCUS and innovation to reduce carbon brought a new audience and broadened the discussions on the future of deep-water development.’

Subsea Operations - SUT Defence Special Interest Group Forum at Oceanology International 2022 The SUT’s Defence Special Interest Group held an afternoon forum on Subsea operations that included some excellent speakers from the Royal Navy and industry.

The theme of the workshop - Subsea Operations - focused on the threats to the subsea Critical National Infrastructures, how the Royal Navy and wider government are developing Nick Swift, SUT Defence SIG Chair strategies and plans for the monitoring and protection of this infrastructure and some current and future enabling technologies that will deliver these required capabilities Critical National Infrastructure is vital for society; and if compromised would result in significant impact on national security, national defence and the functioning of the state.

Subsea cables are an example of the CNI and are vulnerable to deliberate attack in many ways and the conference explained the UK’s reliance on such systems.

The technology treads were presented, the Royal Navy outlining the key challenges of emerging technology both as a user and as a threat; Sonardyne and James Fisher Defence presented some commercial systems that can already, and in some case are, meeting the future requirements for the protection of the Seabed CNI. The forum also heard from the Royal Navy about the next steps and the increase of the in the Navy’s capabilities in this domain, included: • • • •

Investing in MHC Projects.

Investing in Autonomous tech, including vehicles, delivery systems and undersea dormant assets.

OCEANS 2022, Chennai Prepared by Ms. Nidhi Varshney on behalf of the Local Organising Committee

OCEANS 2022 Chennai, was held in a beautiful beach city of India from 21-24 Feb 2022. It was an amalgamation of technology building through collaborative learning, technical sessions, workshops, panel discussions, student’s activities, and a huge range of exhibitors showcasing the latest innovations in products and services from across the globe. Oceans 2022 was a hybrid event keeping both the virtual and physical event spirit live. The event was formally inaugurated on 22nd Feb by Mr Madhu Nair, Chairman-cum-Managing Director, Cochin Shipyard Ltd. as a chief guest followed by plenary sessions given by eminent scientists and researchers from across the world. OCEANS 2022 started with student Hackathon on 20th Feb held in two tracks in person and online, and eight tutorials held virtually on the 21st. The event had 33 hybrid and 51 virtual technical presentations. There were some parallel events such as GOOS MTS Ocean Dialogue and Panel Discussion on Global climate change on 22nd February. There was also a Women in Engineering hybrid session inspiring women to advance in their career and Young Professionals’ Program on the 23rd February. The student poster competition was also organised as a virtual event, with 19 students’ posters being presented from different countries.

Apart from the technical knowledge building, OCEANS 2022 was also a getaway from the monotony of the COVID lifestyle. Students had a fun outing to an aquarium and beach followed by an icebreaker dinner event. There was an exhibitor dinner at the venue and the Gala dinner on the 23rd

Oceanology International 2022 Oceanology International, London 2022 Oi returned to ExCel, London on 15-17 March attracting full halls, busy exhibitor stands, international pavilions and global visitors from 71 countries bringing together industry, academia and government representatives.

More than 450 Exhibitors were joined by over 5000 visitors over three days of business, insightful conference presentations, associated events and networking inside ExCel and outside with quay-side live demonstrations.

The SUT featured prominently in the conference programme with Ralph Rayner, SUT’s Past President, speaking in the opening Keynote session on the Blue Economy. Innovations, new technology and solutions focused on the future of ocean technology were hot topics for discussion.

Contributing to the associated events programme SUT ran three sessions: Women in Industry and Ocean Careers, both chaired by SUT Chair, Sue John and Military Seabed Operations, chaired by Nick Swift, Defence SIG Chair.

On the opening day of Oi, the Ocean Futures theatre audience was near capacity for the Women in Industry session, while Military Seabed Operations Captain Don Walsh is presented the Oceanology was over subscribed with advance registrations International Lifetime Achievement Award by for this interesting and important topic. Students Dr Rick Spinrad and those interested in Ocean Careers were treated to presentations from a variety of prestigious speakers sharing their career journeys as well as advice on working in the marine, subsea and underwater sectors. Moreover, students in attendance had the opportunity to meet with members from Subsea7 who were actively recruiting at the end of the session.

Following the plenary sessions the Captain Don Walsh Award was presented to Victor Vescovo and Patrick Lahey, who reprised their presentation with Captain Don Walsh on Into the Abyss.

The SUT would like to thank all of those who contributed to the Society’s presence and contribution to Oceanology International, speaking in the conference, associated events and assisting in staffing the SUT stand during the exhibition.
