By Emily Fitzgerald

On Thursday, April 4, members of the Decatur Park District, ADM, Robertson Charter School, and the City of Decatur joined together at Grant Park to kick-off the park’s new renovation project. The renovation was made possible thanks to a $90,000 donation from ADM. During the event, Park District President Chris Riley applauded ADM and the city for their joint effort and support in making this project possible. In addition to the playground, city and park district employees will complete a walking trail, pavilion, basketball court, and improvements to the baseball diamond. The Ground breaking ceremony on April 4. updated park will benefit not only the immediate area, but also Robertson Charter School’s 375 students. Bishop G.E. Livingston, president of Robertson Charter School, believes that this is an “excellent opportunity so that people don’t have to drive across town to jog or walk or be healthy and take care of themselves physically.” On Saturday, April 13, ADM and Robertson Charter School volunteers helped erect the park’s new playground. The rest of the park’s renovation will be ADM & Robertson Charter School volunteers building the playground on April 13. completed this summer.

Park Notes  May 2013 Here’s to You... Fit Tip with Jeff: Benefits of Strength Training Strength training will add definition to your muscles and give men and women more fit and toned bodies. Working out with weights also impacts other areas of your body: Strength training protects bone health and muscle mass. After puberty, whether you are a man or a woman, you begin to lose your bone and muscle strength every year. One of the best ways to stop, prevent, and even reverse bone and muscle loss is to add strength training to your exercise routine. Strength training helps you develop better body mechanics. Strength training has benefits that go well be-

yond the appearance of nicely toned muscles. Your balance and coordination will improve, as will your posture. More importantly, if you have poor flexibility and balance, strength training can reduce your risk of falling by as much as 40 percent, a crucial benefit, especially as you get older. Strength training plays a role in disease prevention. Studies have documented the many wellness benefits of strength training. If you have arthritis, strength training can be as effective as medication in decreasing arthritis pain.
