IT ER AT IO N O NE When making my first model, I didn’t have a particular strategy or method to follow. Instead I used my creativity and experimented with the different cardboard pieces, questioning ways in which they would fit together and exploring different shapes and sihlouettes they were able to make. I felt like this first iteration was somewhat closed off and solid and so I wanted to create something with a little more light flow.

I TERATION TWO For my second iteration, I focused on creating window-like structures within my model and using the limited shapes we were given. It is interesting how different shapes and shadows can be created more light flow and gaps within the walls.

I was fascinated by the idea that when you looked through the ‘Windows’ there would almost be layers of other interesting shapes and patterns.

IT ER AT IO N T H R EE I the began to explore the aspect of having a roof on my third iteration. I liked the different levels of height within the structure, however I found that using a roof on my model made it look quite boxy and basic. For my Kit of Parts project, I didn’t want my focus to be on creating a single space, but creating multiple, different spaces within a single model.

I TERATION FOUR The final model iI created was the model i chose to persue the rest of the Kit of Parts project with. It incudes window-like structures to offer light and layers of interesting shapes. It also contains something tat resembles that of a roof, however it doesnt close off the interior of my model, instead it reveals the multiple spaces createc within the single iteration.

It was essential that my model had interesting top, front and side elevations if I was going to re-create these on autocad.

I was also sure to take pictures of the orthographic projection when drawing my model on autocad as it offered a vision of what the drawing will look likeit was easier to comprehend .

To finish off the Kit of Parts project, I took a different model that I had created previously and experimented with Fusion 360 in order to bring my model to life. I played around with materials, lighting, shadows and backgrounds before i rendered my designs.

PRECEDENT STUDIES What inspired my Micro Studio project?

Jameson’s Tea House hangs amongst the trees and resembles somewhat a Japanese style lantern.

It is interesting how this micro studio acts amongst its tall surroundings, the timber ceiling deliberately points down towards the floor, inviting people to sit and relax. The overall luminosicty of the space amongst the darker woods around it allows an atmosphere for contemplation or meditation, it represents natural balance of light and dark.

Conseptual thinking is important when creating beautiful spaces,

especially if they are to work with/ mimick natural surroundings. Jameson had clearly looked closely at the site of his building in order to delevop his ideas further. This can be seen in the choice of colours, the way the space hangs as if it is floatng, and it can be seen with the aspect of balance and zen within his interior.

This Micro Space sparks the idea of Yin and Yang. The balance of everythis from work and play, to light and dark etc. This is inspiring when thinking of creating a studio space for yourself, a place for you to work and study, yet it should also be a place for you to relax and clear your mind, setting your studio amongst nature can also halp with this.

Project Name: Writer’s Shed

Project Name: Riondolo- Moblie Meditation Pavilion

Location: Lake Shore, Northern Italy

Designed for a writer based in the city, Matt Gibson has created a green camouflage across the walls of this garden studio in Melbourne, Australia. It indeed embodies that of a ‘Micro Studio’ as it only takes up a miniscule 10 square metres.

Gibson also worked with a Landscape designer, Ben Scott, in order to design the planting scheme for the building. This enables maximum effort in making this wonderful garden pavilion into something eco-friendly and also a feature to adorn nature herself. In fact, the designer’s intent was to “Make the structure feel like part of the garden itself”. What is interesting about this small studio is the material Gibson used to grow up his walls, he used Boston Ivy which grows quickly, yet it is a non-obstructive climber. This Ivy also naturally shades the building so that it can passively cool down its interior on especially hot days. The studio also has a simple, rectangular plan with one corner cut off, this corner inhabits a large desk for workspace and an even larger single pane window. What is so inspiring about the Writer’s Shed is the sheer atmosphere of the outdoors without actually being outside. A huge beam of natural light runs through the interior, fuelling the brain for study, yet also relaxing the mind for a sense of peace and tranquillity.

Wegher has created this tiny timber pavilion that sits nest to Lake Shore in Northern Italy as a humble place of contemplation. The folly has a floor plan of just 7 square metres and 5 metres tall, allowing one or two people to use it at any one time. This emphasises its purpose for self contemplation and ‘alone time’. This structure is interesting as it is in fact mobile, it can be easily assembled and disassembeld in order to be transported round the scenic locations within the national park. Furtermore, Wegher’s interesting choice of triangular shaped facades mimic the mountains of the background, tieing it in well with it’s natural surroundings. Wegher states that, “Riondolo is the search of man for a more sincere and less deceptive contact with nature”. Beneath the beautiful skylight are benches for people to sit and admire the sky. This pavilion is inspiring to the project of ‘Micro Studio’ as it allows man to become closer to nature, as well as self reflect and contemplate.

SITE PLAN

I chose to create my Micro Studio amongst nature, trees and water within the forrests of Rivington, Lancashire. I wasn’t sure whether i wanted to create a studio actually surrounded by water and i ended up chosing a site that overlooks water, whilst staying on land. The trees were really important to my concept as they give my studio a sense of tranquility and beauty. I found a perfect sized clearing in the middle of the woods where i intend my studio to go. I also wanted my studio to contain large windows so that passers by can see through to the other side, not disrupting their views of the park and water.

MODEL ONE When creating my first model, I wasn’t too sure on what I was going to produce or come up with. I find that its best to experiment when starting a new project, by cutting up random and unusual shapes and fitting them together in as many ways as possible. Origionally, my Micro- Studio was intended to be an unusual shape, this meant avoid symmetry and square plans.

MODEL TWO As seen earlier on with my mood board, I want my project to embody triangles. The reason why I want to include triangles in my design is they fit together in interesting ways whilst creating interesting shapes and shadows. In my second model I began to look at triangular shaped windows and curved exterior walls. I also was interested in exploring stilts and having my studio slightly raised.

MODEL THREE I started to look at how triangular shapes can fit together to create roofs and even started taking inspiration from Japanese Tea Houses in my process, drawings of these roof ideas will be looked at later on. Although model three is not technically a studio space , i wanted to see the shadows that could be created and the maximum available space of a studio made entirely of triangles. I found that my plan was flawed in that the space is actually quite minimal, tall but the sloping ceillings restrict movement.

MODEL FOUR I also played around with some quite abstract triangular shapes so i could experiment as best I could. For model four I cut out as many triangles as i could with my remaining card and found a way to piece them all together. The reason why I wanted to inclued triangles is not just because their unique shape can create interesting shadows and reflections, but the idea of a scalene triangle contradicts the concept of balance in a fascinating way.

MODEL FIVE The model on the left is the idea I decided to persue for my Micro Studio. Although I had experimented with roofs inspired by Japanese and Chinese Tea Houses, I decided to go for a triangular roof with a skylight connecting to a large window. This way I can allow maximum light into the studio and not cover it up with a solid roof. I also found that using a sloping, trianular roof almost divides the space into two seperate spaces, a dark, low space for relaxing and sitting and a bright, lit-up space for studying. The dent in the roof can also be used as a rain-water collecting device, allowing the water to run down and fall into a bucket or water store.

MODEL SIX For My sixth model, having already chosen a design for my Micro Studio, I decided to create a replica of the model to scale and include a basic floorplan idea to help invision my studio. One of the main reasons for my Studio is to create a space where one can work effectively, yet relax or meditate in the same space. Although my floorplan is split off with walls, my studio design will actually be open plan with the aim of using shadows and light and ceilling levels as dividers for the room. Where the roof slopes down, i intend on creating a sit-down, Japanese inspired meditation area. Where there is a skylight and the roof is slightly higher, I intend on portraying a work area with a desk and chair, with beautiful and tranquil views of the natural world.

Balance is key in this concept as well as the design, both light and dark must remain in balance to create two different spaces within one space, however, the reason for this studio is to portray the balance between working and relaxation. There are two main functions for this studio, to study and use it as a quiet workplace and to also have a space to contemplate,

Again, taking inspiration from Japanese Tea Houses and Meditation Rooms, I began to sketch some inspiration for my meditation space. I liked the idea of having a floor seated area in the corner because the roof slopes all the way down, only having room for someone to sit down.

LIGHT AND DARK

The reason I have been so set on making sure my model can create dark, unusual shadows is because I wanted to create a studio with one room (no walls or anything to block up the small space). However, the space can’t just be a boring, one room/one function area, something needs to devide the space up into different sections. Therefore, this studio will be deliberatley positioned facing South East, this will give the maximum amount of shadows, keeping the sloping corner of the model in a darker and shadier area whilst the area with the skylight remains illuminated throughout the day.

In order to get a feel for my Studio, I began to photograph what the inside would look like when you are working in there. I also used a lamp to experiment with different shadows and ways of creating the illusion of more than one space without using physical walls and barriers. I am really happy with how this small experiment worked out and I tink it really adds to my architectual concept of balance.

Not only the balance of work and relaxation, but the balance of light and dark, shadows and spaces.

A X O NOM ETRIC This Micro Studio stands at 16 metres squared and 4 metres tall. It’s two front doors are 24� wide. It is deliberatley made to be tall as i wanted to include high ceilings somewhere within the studio to maximise space.

Even though i wanted to avoid squares and symmetry in my design, it was also important that the base of the building was in fact a square, this made the triangles fit togetehr alot easier.

I would also like to include alot of wood and eco friendly materials within my design, not only to tie it in with its natural surroundings, but to make sure it is a sustainable piece of architecture.

U S ER EX P ER IENCE My Studio will contain a desk space as well as a quiet relaxation area. I was the desk space to feel open and spacious rather than small and cramped (which is why it is an open plan studio). The skylight and large window in the desk area will help to give alot of natural light throught the day- perfect for working and studying.

This Stdio is deliberatley facing South East at the site not only for the sun and its natural light, but it if facining this way so that passers by, whether they be walking their dogs or out on a run, can infact see through to two windows. Therefore my micro studio will not obstruct the natural scenes, it will blend into them and allow you to see the water on the horizon.

AUTO CAD PLAN After re-watching The Breakfast Club, i was able to build up the library from watching the characters move around during my chosen scene. I chose this scene because there is alot of movement, particularly from the upstairs part of the setting which is not as explored during the rest of the film. I have marked each characters movement during my chosen scene with different couloured pens. This way you can visually see the movement within the drawing and it helps to understand the relationship between the characters and their architectual setting.

For the project ‘Cine space’, I found it particularly difficult to choose a film to base my study on.

I decided that John Hughes’ ‘The Breakfast Club’, filmed in 1985, would best fit my explorations and architectural understanding. It is no secret that the majority of the film takes place in one room, the Library, however I believe that this supports the importance of the correlation between architectural space and film. The characters explore parts of the setting throughout the film, yet always seem to resort back to their detention desks when in trouble. These desks, being on the bottom floor of the Library, somewhat reflect the down and low parts of the movie. The desks also symbolise the invisible hierarchy which is created in this film, the popular kids are sat at the front whilst the quieter and lonelier characters sit towards the back.

I created a 3D model of part of the library in order to depict the different levels within the setting. Although it is only one room, it is far from just a single space. The architectual levels are used in correlation to the film, for example when John Bender has an outburst of anger and dramatically climbs up the balconies of the library- no stairs used. When photographing my model i focused mainly on creating a sense of movement and life using light and shadows. I feel that having interesting shaped shadows and reflections not only create a moody atmosphere, but also give the setting its own purpose and life.
