Contents Editor’s Note

Imagine three people on a sailboat with three different personalities. The Oxford English Dictionary defines the word ‘personality’ as “the combination of characteristics or qualities that form an individual’s distinctive character.” So, three people on a sailboat would have three different combinations of characteristics or qualities. Applying the password rule, each of the three people is unique. We make a room for differences because we value uniqueness, but we also make a room to take off one or more attributes because we value companionship. Oscar Wilde once wrote,

“Ultimately, the bond of all companionship is conversation,”

and according to the Oxford English Dictionary, the word ‘conversation’ suggests an exchange of news and ideas. We believe that sharing news and ideas forms a powerful bond between us. Three people on a sailboat with three different personalities would not survive the biggest storms—nor would they have a pleasant sail— if they do not value both their differences and companionship. In other words, they would not succeed unless they create socialemotional ties (bond-red). Conversations between them, the sharing moments, would determine their success.

Imagine every personality is an eight-digit password. None of us would have exactly the same combination of letters and/or numbers. Even if the same combination happens, such occurrence is low in probability. Therefore, the word ‘unique’ is being used in password rule, and to remain unique, each password should have different combination of letters and/or numbers.

Weeks ago, Malang District Health Department received some units of emergency-standard ambulance through the 2013 Adjustment APBN (special allocation) fund.

Through this recognition, the local government—via District Health Department—has shown a mutual commitment to get in line with the EMAS Program. This also has become the success of EMAS Team East Java to advocate the local government.

The plan itself had been in a discussion for quite long, since approximately mid-2012. Head of Malang Health Department had denoted the issue during an EMAS POKJA meeting, and through an effort of advocacy, EMAS Team East Java made an assertion that the ambulances should be prioritized for Vanguard Puskesmases.

In addition, EMAS Team East Java has added a line in their advocacy undertaking by the establishment of a counseling program for specialists (Sp.OG and Sp.A) at Vanguard Puskesmases, using the 2013 PAK fund from District Health Department. Moreover, the team has encouraged the Puskemases to self-initiate a comparison study among Puskesmases to elevate their competency in maternal and neonatal emergency response. One of them is Puskesmas Pagak will be case-studying Puskesmas Turen and vice versa.

The next POKJA meetings spanned in-depth discussions and processes, and finally the request by the EMAS Team was fulfilled. The ambulances were granted to the district-level health department with the each Vanguard Puskesmas name written on the ambulance body.

Today, Malang District has 39 Puskesmases, and eight of them have been vanguards. The 2012 Rakerkesda (district health work plan) pointed out that Malang District Health Department will replicate EMAS Program to all Puskesmases in Malang District. Since December 2013, District Health Department has also granted IDR 5,500,000 per month to EMAS for SIJARIEMAS server installation at the department office. The ICT Advisor Bambang Wijayanto and East Java ICT Officer have stepped forward with remote installation process. Head of East Java Health Department reckons that this year, all reports must be done IT-based.

Social Media for Marketing and Digital Advertising Seminar by Ideoworks Cindy Rahmaputri

Highlights

January 30, 2013, Ideoworks held a seminar at the International Design School in Jakarta. They highlight the use of social media today, more specifically for marketing purpose. The two key speakers were Adez Aulia (General Manager – Head of Sales and Operation of Ideoworks and Shopify Channel) and Sandi Pinatabahri (Chief Strategy Officer of Buzzworks Digital Media Agency). Adez, with his @AdezAulia account, has got more than 32,000 followers on Twitter, and his @KerjaKreatif account with more than 78,600 followers, shared his knowledge on how to use social media for marketing purpose. During a casual and fresh 90-minute presentation, he encouraged every participant to “follow the rules of how to attract people on Twitter.” He began with basic sales and marketing theories before getting into social media. Under a minimum budget, it is almost impossible for most social media accounts representing particular products/services to hire one or more well-known brand ambassador. He suggested that the cheapest way to develop start-up brands on social media is by being the brand ambassador for our own products/services. First rule is; social media is to seek for friendship, not sales. People keep making mistakes by asking for a follow-back or Retweets, or promoting their products/services to people they do not know. “Give before you ask!” he said. Another important tips he gave was that we must “follow the game.” What he means is that whatever being discussed now, we have to discuss it now! To show that we are an expert on what we are doing is also important. He explained that blogs, Facebooks and a series of tweets (or what Indonesian Twitter users known as “kultwit”) are effective tools to show our expertise. “Kultwits must use hashtags, so they will be searchable. Use numbers too, so people will know that they are connected,” he said. He mentioned also that online publication is another key to spread words about our products/services. “If we have never been on any papers, make our own newspapers. If we have never been on any TV stations, we make our own TV stations,” he reckoned. “Let Google track you, and leave ‘footprints’ as many as possible,” he added. He explained, “We can use social media to advertise, but remember the portion. Give, let us say, four information before you give one ad. We can use it as a customer service too. Drive your followers to your website.” Adez suggested to practice user behavior analysis using a statistic. “Remember that the discussion trend will change every hour,” he closed his presentation.

Second speaker, Sandi Pinatabahri (@sandi_pb) was focusing on digital advertising. He began his two-hour presentation with basic online campaign glossary, such as CPC (cost per click), CPM (cost per month), CPA (cost per action), CTR (click-through rate) and so on. “If you want to get something from digital media, learn the user behavior first to decide which media is the most efficient,” he said. Most of his slides were about statistics, such as 70% of Facebook users age 13-24 years old, 62% people will try to find information on social media before they buy products, and so on. Sandi divides digital media into four categories (website, mobile, email and social media), and digital creative contents must be interactive, customizable, contextual, entertaining, playable and useful. He also suggested the use of Google Analytics and sponsored content to monitor increase traffic. “93% of all online traffics come from search engines, and 50% of all sales come from search engines too,” he noted. “Apply specific keywords, like ‘Mercedes year 1950’ and get as many keywords you can,” he added. He ended his presentation with explanations about Facebook Ads and Twitter Promoted Accounts. Past social media seminar. Photo credit: Ideoworks

The Energy and Spirit to Change Appreciative Inquiry Introduced to EMAS Team Evodia A. Iswandi

Appreciative Inquiry (AI) is an approach to change, an organizational learning. It is an organization development (OD) model to facilitate positive change of human systems, e.g. organizations, groups and communities; to call for a new way of being, seeing and thinking — an individual mindset in the context of wholeness. The assumption underlying AI is simple: every human system has a core of strengths that is often hidden and/or underutilized. The core is known as a ‘positive core.’ AI searches for and finds the positive core, and when the positive core is revealed and tapped into, it provides a sustainable source of positive energy that nourishes both personal and organizational change and, potentially, transformation. AI is like a search engine, searching for the positive core—or the strengths and successes—of the human system (organization, group, community, etc.) under study. When the positive core is linked to an agenda for change, rapid, sustainable and transformational change is possible! Ai is the ongoing, continuous study of what gives life to a human system (organization, group or community) when it is functioning at its best. A basic premise of AI is that whatever we focus our attention on (study, inquire into), we will create more of it. So, instead of searching for problems and inadvertently creating more of them, we search for what is working really well in the system (our own best practices), so we can create more successes. Because the statements are grounded in people’s real experience and history, people know how to repeat their successes. AI is a generative process; it generates new possibilities through new or deeper relationships and it generates hope.

In the third year of EMAS Program, EMAS is really trying to make a great place to work. In developing that positive topic, I try to introduce and use the AI approach. We have used AI in Jakarta, North Sumatra and Central Java offices. I found the energy and the spirit of staff to do more. They found out that what they shared to others is their real-best experience and history, and they wanted to repeat their successes. I am happy sharing AI to EMAS and that the team was very eager to change to be positive and to do more. Soon we will continue with South Sulawesi, Banten, West Java and East Java. Some staff have plans to practice the AI approach to their stakeholders. I also once introduced EMAS Program in West Sumatra using the AI approach, and they already provide budget to start replicating EMAS Program in their province.

A Book for a Winner

Review on Risfan Munir’s Manajemen Apresiatif Hartono Rakiman

All begins with the way we think. Our success and failure will be defined by the way we think. Do we want every problem to be bothering us and to let us die as a loser? Or do we want to be rocketing up high with the every given potentiality, even at the smallest, and be a winner? I know Risfan Munir personally because we were involved in the same activities when we arranged modules for training, wrote best practices for newsletters and became training facilitators for projects funded by international donors.

Like having a complete dine with your appetizer, soup, salad, main course and dessert, I know exactly that he serves them in the right order of appearance, because I once a waiter on a cruise ship. In every beginning of a chapter, he puts a quotation to give an initial inspiration. Like appetizers, the quotations arouse the appetite before finally reading.

Since we met very intensively, I already knew about his vision, his positive-thinking and appreciative attitudes. He is not easily annoyed and not reactive, but rather to be proactive and analytical. Reading his book, Manajemen Apresiatif (Appreciative Inquiry), I can feel the way he thinks. He is systematic, pungent and gets into the point, but somehow fluxing, not stern. He slips some actual examples, felicitous tidings from the champions and innovators.

This book has not only described appreciative perceptions, but also the practical techniques within. His concept is very applicable. His Appreciative Inquiry concept arms readers with “weapons of self-establishment and success using the every given potentiality and power.

Summing up, the book is divided into three parts: 1) Sow the appreciative seeds, 2) Appreciative Inquiry process and 3) Plow and grow.

As a founder of an online reading community Rumah Baca (the Reading House), I come up with a conclusion that people who love writing have a good thinking process organization. What someone writes depicts what is inside his/her head, and whether he/she is pessimistic or optimistic. But I believe that those who love reading and writing are all optimistic. Once again, it is just the way we think.

Manajement Apresiatif (Kaifa: 2011) takes a firm stand on the appreciative Risfan Munir. I barely found he who complains about something that happens upon him, something he reads on papers or he watches on TV. Even on Facebook or Twitter; he never complains. He can always see the positive sides of everything. He always has a potential seed to plant, take care of and grow. Hartono Rakiman

Go for a Healthy Body, Shape Is Just a Bonus Hery Purnomo, ICT Programmer and Professional Personal Trainer Text: Cindy Rahmaputri Photo credit: Hery Purnomo

2014-4 EMAS Internal Newsletter Page 12

Profile ICT Programmer Hery Purnomo has dedicated almost ten years to gym. Not only as a hobby, gym and healthy lifestyle have become like his religion. “I go to gym almost every day. One day for one different muscle to train, plus one day for a combination exercise,” he explained. He has fancied this activity since 2002. That time, he was not yet a professional personal trainer like nowadays. He just exercise regularly to gain a healthy body. In 2009, when he was working in Aceh, he quitted exercising, and his colleagues kept telling him that he was gaining weight. By then, he began to exercise regularly, and in 2010, he started to make friends with other professional personal trainers from the Ade Rai Club. He then took a personal trainer certification and became one until today. As a professional, he has a training schedule three times a week. The hardest part of being on his profession is when the trainee does not persistently keep a healthy eating order. “Many of them, usually beginners, their first motivation is not to be healthy but to be well shaped. This is wrong. People should crave for a healthy body. Shape is a bonus. When they crave for a good shape body at the first place, they would do anything to achieve it. Some of them use steroids, which is not good,” he noted. “If less than three months someone gets a well-shaped body, I can make sure that he/she consumes steroids. To be well shaped, one needs at least six months,” he added. However, a six-pack stomach can be achieved in three months with a two-hour exercise a day focusing on the abdomen muscle.

Gym has to be supported with healthy eating order and consistent sleeping schedule. “Healthy eating means less carbohydrate and glucose, more vegetables/fruits and protein, no fried cooking, no fats. Anyway, consistent sleeping schedule is a bit hard to practice,” he said. Hery, who is also a cassette and CD collector with around 1,500 cassettes and 400 CDs of various metal groups/singers on his rack, is planning to have his own gym in the future. Today, he is still at his best at the Ade Rai Club near his house in Bekasi, together with three other friends of the same profession. Here, they have around twenty trainees and up to 100 members. Tips for beginners • • • • • •

Think what your utmost goal is Try out before registering Pay attention to your instructor. Ask if you do not understand. Wrong movements could lead to zero results, or even pain. Try thirteen sessions with an instructor, and continue without one afterwards Facilities do not guarantee quality, but personal trainers do. Pick a gym close to either your house or office to cost you less and motivate you more

Your friends may be amazed when advice you give.

Some people might be trying to take advantage of your good nature. Friends will be encouraging and bolstering your spirits. Because of your Pisces nature, your very aura of tender feelings has a chance to inspire others by example.

Thinking outside the box will come easy to you this year - not that it is ever too hard. In fact, for you there is practically no box. Your ideas definitely look attractive. Your money situation looks good as well, but you may be a bit conflicted on how to manage it. Aquarius in 2014

Your relationship works, and will continue to work well. Just do not try to reverse-engineer it to figure out how it works.

Evernote: A Fancy Cloud-based Application for Casual Writing Cindy Rahmaputri

“Evernote is an easy-to-use, free app that helps you remember everything across all of the devices you use. Stay organized, save your ideas and improve productivity. Evernote lets you take notes, capture photos, create to-do lists, record voice reminders, and makes these notes completely searchable, whether you are at home, at work, or on the go.

Evernote for desktop

2014-4 EMAS Internal Newsletter Page 18

Your IT Assistant If you love writing or you just have to write, perhaps you need Evernote installed on your devices. If most times you always forget to bring important Word files, for example to a meeting, then it is time to install this application. What is so special about this Evernote application? Here are Evernote key features: • Sync all your notes across the computers and devices you use • Create and edit text notes, to-dos and task lists • Save, sync and share files • Record voice and audio notes • Search for text inside images • Organize notes by notebooks and tags • Email notes and save tweets to your Evernote account • Connect Evernote to other apps and products you use • Share notes with friends and colleagues via Facebook and Twitter Once you install the app on all of your devices, you can access your notes on all of your devices by logging in with your email. The app will synchronize all your notes across your PC and devices, so no more “I forgot to bring the file!” If you have written down points of discussion for a meeting on your laptop at home, you do not need to bring that laptop to the meeting. Open your Evernote on your office laptop or your iPhone/ iPad, and you can access the same points of discussions you write at home.

Unlike your Desktop Folders, if you forget on what Notebook you put your note, you do not need to search your note folder-by-folder. You just type a specific keyword, and Evernote will find the note for you. The fanciest thing about this app is that we do not need to open multiple Word files on so many windows to access several notes. We can jump from one note to another on the same window. So fun! Here are some ways to use Evernote for your personal or professional life: • Research smarter: snap photos of whiteboards and books • Take meeting and class notes, draft agendas and research notes • Plan a trip: keep track of travel plans, plane tickets and passports • Organize and save recipes; search by ingredients later • Create a grocery list or task list and check things off as you go • View web pages saved in Evernote on your desktop • Capture ideas and inspiration on the go • Access files and notes you create on your phone from your desktop • Keep finances in order: save receipts, bills and contracts • Reduce paper clutter by taking snapshots of restaurant menus, business cards and labels • To get the most out of your Evernote experience, download it on all of the computers and phones that you use

Evernote is very easy to use. You can group your notes in as many group you want. Evernote named the list of groups as “Notebooks.” So, you can create Notebooks based on your topic preference. For example, you might want to group notes about guidelines on a Notebook named “Guidelines,” or you might want to group notes during meetings on a “Meeting” group. You can add as many notes you want on each Notebook, and you can even display or sort hundreds of notes based on title, dates created, last updated, source URL, size, tags, subject, and many more. Unlike Office’s Microsoft Word, you do not need to press CTRL+S every time you worry about your laptop’s running out of battery. Evernote will do it for you automatically every particular minute. You would never lose any notes or articles you wrote. If your laptop/PC is connected to internet, Evernote will save your notes on their server. But if you do not have any internet connection, they will be saved only on your hard-drive. Once you have a connection, Evernote will sync them to their server. Even if you do not install the app on your laptop/PC, you can also access the app from your browser and open your notes.

Evernote is available for PC, Mac, iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch and Web. Web Clippers is available for Evernote for Web, Web Clippers for Chrome, Safari, Firefox and Internet Explorer. Click here to learn more about this app.

Another fancy thing about Evernote is that it has bookmark feature named “Web Clipper.” You just need to install the add-on on your browser, and whenever you find an interesting page, you press the clipper and the page will be saved on your Evernote as one of your notes. You can even choose what web contents that you want to save, such as Text Only, the overall Web Pages with the pictures, or the Pages only without pictures. You do not need any internet connection the next time you want to see these web pages, because Evernote has them all saved for you on the app. Evernote on App Store
