YEAR 12

CELEBRATING HSC SUCCESS FOR 2022

Mazal tov to the Class of 2022 on an impressive set of HSC results. In addition to their outstanding academic achievements, I am very proud of our students’ strong work ethic, resilience and their positive impact on the culture of our School.

We are a community of learners, with our teaching staff serving as instructors, guides and supporters. We acknowledge with gratitude the key role that they play in preparing our students for further independent study and for the future workplace. Their deep commitment to both the wellbeing and academic development of our students will have an enduring impact on our graduates as they commence the next steps in their life journey.

We have much to celebrate that goes beyond individual success. We congratulate the teachers and students of those subjects who achieved consistently strong results this year: Subject

A special mention must go to those students included on the All Round Achievers list: Lori Allen, Jesse Herdan, Victoria Miller, Joshua Moses, Jayda Sacks and Remy Waller. Special congratulations to Maya Sher, for her selection in the ARTEXPRESS exhibition, and to Myles Cohn, Isabella Filipczyk and Jasmine Barea, for their nomination for the OnSTAGE Showcase and Daniel Langman (Year 11), for his nomination for the InTech Showcase.

We are reminded that our ranking in the recently published ‘League Tables’ provide only a small part of the picture. These comparisons with other schools neither capture the character of our graduates, nor the progress students of varying abilities have made over their school journey.

As we rightly recognise the achievements of our highperforming students, we also want to acknowledge those students who have given their personal best. Whilst they may not receive the accolades given to the top band performances, they have worked hard, studied consistently and achieved to their potential. Some of our students have battled with significant personal challenges in their final years of school. We join with them in celebrating their progress and their determination to give their best effort, for the best possible outcome.

Our graduates of the Class of 2022 step out into the workplace or commence their tertiary studies secure in the knowledge that, as much has been given to them, much will be expected. They are reminded of the blessing given at their Graduation Ceremony:

May you live your life well, bring honour to your families, your school and to God.

May you be kind-hearted, compassionate and proactive young men and women. May you love your family and care for your community, as well as having eyes and hearts that are global… and we hope to hear many stories of your adventures in years to come.

As Emanuel alumni, they graduate equipped to be the best that they can be and to make a difference for good, in their Jewish and broader communities.

“The body of research, epigenetics, examines whether genetic phenotypes are altered at conception due to past generational trauma. My sculptural work, ‘Corroded Inheritance’ is a personal attribute, alluding to ideas of decay transmitted via the trauma of the Holocaust. The several forms reiterate a familial representation commenting on the significance of genetics. The rust symbolises weathering, the consequence of exposure to external environments, understood through the lens of dysfunctions of earlier generations. The crocheted wire, intricate and delicate, makes reference to the complexity of our genetic makeup. The perspex vitrine exemplifies the role of the museum in housing historical artefacts.”

WHAT DO YOU VALUE?

The values of Emanuel School are ingrained into every part of its being. Growing up as an Emanuel student since Year K these values have helped mould me into the graduate that I am today. Reflecting on my time at this beautiful place, the school values of compassion, justice and community stand out to me most. Every day when I walked into the gates of Emanuel, I felt welcomed and at home. I felt like I belonged, that I could be myself and that I was cared about and capable of making a difference. These feelings of acceptance and belonging are what is so special about being a student at Emanuel.

Emanuel’s values of justice and community were clearest to me when I was privileged to visit Villawood Detention Centre in 2020 as part of the School’s engagement with refugees. I met some of the most lovely, warm, and strong people seeking asylum in Australia. This experience was extremely confronting as I tried to grapple with these people’s harsh reality, how many of them were stuck in detention indefinitely, and how all of this was happening to innocent people in my own backyard. Upon reflection, I was able to recognise how Emanuel’s values of justice and community continue to push the boundaries for its students, allowing us to see a true reality of what our society looks like and how we can work to create justice when injustice is so present in our society today.

Part of creating a compassionate and respectful environment at Emanuel is due to the role modelling by Emanuel’s fantastic teachers. My teachers were

some of the most supportive, kind and encouraging people I had ever been lucky enough to meet. They love what they do and genuinely care about each of their students. Whenever I walked into class, I was welcomed by my teachers’ big smiles and so many times they went above and beyond, including marking drafts at crazy hours, taking the time to chat if they could see I was not ok and making class somewhere I felt cared about and respected – a place I wanted to learn.

I have found parts of school really challenging. I struggled with my mental health, which has at times made school a difficult place. I have been so lucky because people at school saw this and went out of their way to help me be OK, as well as teach me to persevere through hard times. My mental health challenges alongside HSC have been hard, but with frequent mentoring from a trusted teacher and extra care and support from my teachers this difficult journey was eased. I received so much kindness, empathy, compassion and support, all of which I am so grateful for, and this has allowed me to finish school with a huge smile on my face.

I feel as if many of Emanuel’s values have become my own. These values help me feel ready to take on the challenges of the world and ready to make a positive and lasting difference to society.

7

Throughout my time at Emanuel, I have been provided with many different opportunities to step out of my comfort zone and challenge myself. I think those opportunities have set me up well for my next chapter in life, and to not be afraid to try something new.

The greatest challenge I have faced during my schooling was being able to find my own motivation to succeed. I was never the student who inherently enjoyed studying or being given work to complete. As I moved into my more senior years, it was challenging for me to find my own motivation to persevere (specifically academically) and continue to give my full effort, even in challenging situations. The ability to choose the subjects I studied in my senior years and follow my academic passions certainly helped me to find my motivation.

I definitely do not think you need a title to be a leader. To me, leadership involves helping and uplifting those around you, no matter whether from a recognised position of leadership or not.

The teacher who has made the most impact on my life is Mr Bartlett. His enthusiasm and passion for Economics has certainly been an inspiration for me to study Economics after school. Without his support and countless time spent in helping me I would never have been able to reach my potential in the subject. Mr Bartlett has such a passion for Economics and teaching, and it is infectious. He made every lesson interesting and a joy to be a part of. I can’t thank Mr Bartlett enough for always making me feel like I could succeed and supporting me in doing so. I am independent, curious and hardworking, and I really loved being involved in some of the different school productions, including Romeo and Juliet, and Grease I absolutely loved the passion and enthusiasm of everyone involved, as well as the opportunity to bond and connect with many different people in the process. I am proud of myself for becoming involved in Drama. Every time we had to perform I had to take a massive step out of my comfort zone. I am forever proud of myself for persevering through these challenges.

I want my peers to remember me as someone they could rely on and trust, and I hope my teachers remember me as someone who tried their best and persevered. My peers have described me as someone who brings an intangible quality into a room.

Next year I plan to take part in a gap year program, working in outdoor education programs in the UK. From there I intend on going to university to study Economics and International Studies.

The first words that come to mind when I think of Emanuel School include ‘a safe space’, ‘expressive’ and ‘conducive to personal growth’. In addition to syllabus studies, I have learnt valuable lessons about self-care, and the importance of prioritising your own mental and physical health.

GAIJA AVSHALOM

When I think of Emanuel School, the first sense that comes to mind is a feeling of community and family.

My biggest achievement is how far I’ve come, specifically academically. My High School experience was not always easy. In the beginning, I was finding it difficult to stay on top of my work, but over time I became more organised and more motivated.

Getting into the Year 12 routine, staying on top of my studies and remembering what I’m working towards was, at times, challenging. I struggled a lot with my reading and writing when I returned from Israel and Ms Levenson always knew how to make me feel safe and okay with being a bit behind the rest of my Year. She was always there for me and always helped me push through, and most importantly she was able to help me get to the same reading level as my peers. I will always be grateful to her for this.

At Emanuel, you learn how to help others, and how to be a leader by being involved in daily activities, sharing your opinion and interacting with other Year Groups. Being a Madricha gave me the ability to learn the importance of communicating within a group, run Shabbatot and different events. My plan for next year is to take a gap year and travel. I am enrolled in a 6-week program to Israel, and then I hope to travel around Europe. After my gap year and working, I hope to attend university, possibly in the areas of Psychology, the Arts or something within the Science field.

ANTON BLAIR

I would like to be remembered for my enthusiasm, and being approachable, resourceful, funny and caring. My peers have described me as an enthusiastic and dedicated student who is a great role model for younger students.

98.15

The greatest challenges during my years at Emanuel School were the COVID-19 lockdowns and online learning; however, as a motivated, ambitious and conscientious student, I was dedicated to my studies and improving my marks and effort throughout Year 11 and Year 12. I received the academic progress award in Year 11 and I’m proud of my academic results in Year 12. My friends would describe me as hardworking, kind and passionate. They seem to enjoy my sense of humour and admire my passion for investment and business.

Ms Laumberg has made the biggest impact on my life through her support and guidance in Maths over the past three years. She was always open to talk, share her advice and knowledge with me. Although not in the syllabus, I value my involvement with the Investment Club which has been instrumental in my future plans. Through the Club, I learnt about the world of finance and investing, and about careers in finance and entrepreneurship. I was also able to connect with the many guest speakers that visited the School. These invaluable experiences have led me to the decision to study Commerce at UNSW while gaining internship experience in the finance industry.

A mensch is someone who does the right thing, even when no one is telling them to, and even when no one is watching. I hope I have exemplified those attributes during my years at Emanuel School.

“People and community first.”

‘Connected’ is the word that comes to mind when I think of Emanuel School, and the opportunities I have been given around teamwork and communication have set me up well for the future.

School highlights for me include Ski Camp and playing soccer at lunch. Travelling to East Timor with other students and helping people in need was a particular personal achievement for me and one that I will remember. Mathematics with Ms Laumberg was particularly memorable and I would look forward to every one of her classes as they were always fun and engaging.

Emanuel has given me a unique school experience through the various extra-curricular activities and opportunities I participated in. From visiting foreign countries to participating in sport and debating competitions, Emanuel’s commitment to success outside of academics has made my schooling experience unique.

MYLES COHN

As someone who is curious and independent, I plan on taking a gap year, travelling around the world, before studying either PPE or International Relations and languages at ANU in 2024. The support from the School regarding careers and post High School options, including university, gap years and jobs, has been invaluable.

“Emanuel has helped me discover my passions, make long lasting friends and encouraged my positive attitude towards learning. I am eternally grateful for my time here.”

As I reflect on my school years I was, and am still, very proud of the many different extra-curricular activities I participated in, whether I excelled or just tried my best.

I am also very proud of accelerating in Maths. Although it was a huge weight to bear in Year 11, I will forever be happy with doing it. I will always remember the many Music Camps and the School Productions, from Seussical to Grease, which helped me grow and develop my love for music and performing. I am entertaining, creative and curious, so online learning during 2020 and 2021 was a challenge. It wasn’t easy to spend that long isolated from my friends.

I think my friends would describe me as funny, but more importantly kind and considerate – someone you can rely on. I would like to be remembered for my charisma and attitude towards school life, but in general as one of the Madrichim who helped the students out of lockdown and back to school life as we know it.

My Year 8 Music teacher, Mr Robertson, had a significant impact on me. He didn’t just teach us music and music theory, but he opened my eyes to things about music I couldn’t see before, and it is because of him that I developed a love for the subject.

My future plans include travel to Israel and Europe, and then I intend to go to UTS to study.

Emanuel School’s motto, Mind, Spirit, Being, is a perfect embodiment of the Emanuel School student. It’s connected to a passage from the Torah and I believe it represents strong characteristics found in everyone who goes to Emanuel, as they utilise all three words to the fullest. At Emanuel I learned the importance of teamwork, integrity and the appreciation of others. These attributes have certainly set me up for the next chapter in my life.

OUR RESPONSIBILITY

We are both extremely passionate about social action and Emanuel has enabled us to engage with many issues and discussions surrounding social justice, particularly within the context of Tikkun Olam. Tikkun Olam – the notion of making the world a better place – is a concept that is at the heart of the values and actions of Emanuel. Leaving school and moving into a new chapter, we believe that it is our responsibility as engaged Jewish and global citizens to use our passion for social action and Tikkun Olam.

In 2019, we were fortunate enough to go to Timor Leste, an experience that sparked a deep love of learning about different cultures and ways of life. Learning from the Timorese people enabled us to reflect on our own lives and forced us to see the world differently. We have since been involved in many events and experiences that have fostered and facilitated our passion for world issues and working to repair the world.

Throughout our time at Emanuel, we have been able to participate in many discussions about Tikkun Olam, showing us how much of an impact our actions can have on the world. The High School Jewish Studies course, specifically the Speaker Series in Year 11, taught us about many issues faced by people around the world and in Australia. Hearing from experts on poverty, human trafficking and ethical farming (to name a few), and engaging in discussions about these issues and how they are relevant to us, has pushed us to expand our worldview and seek to involve ourselves in further action to create the world we want to live in.

This year, we were given the opportunity to participate in an Indigenous education excursion run in Centennial Park by Deadly Ed. We learned about the traditional uses of native plants and the unique tools used for hunting, fishing and shelter. This eye-opening experience showed us that Indigenous culture is rich within Australia’s landscape, both when we are aware and when we are not. We were asked to write an article reflecting on this experience for the Australian Jewish News, which enabled us to spread awareness and educate others about the interesting things we learnt.

The breadth of opportunities we are presented with at Emanuel and the platform we are given to seek justice and express our views is what empowers us as students to make a change to this world. Moreover, we feel it is our responsibility as Jewish people to be part of the solution and the fight for social justice in today’s world.

ISABELLA FILIPCZYK

Emanuel School is a place of constant learning and growth. Being a part of the Peer Support team in Year 11 provided me with confidence and the ability to effectively communicate with younger years and resolve conflict, which will greatly influence the way I carry myself during the next chapter of my life. Additionally, planning and running the weekly Shabbat services has helped me to step out of my comfort zone and speak in front of larger groups. It has also assisted in my planning and collaboration skills which will be very useful in the future.

Aside from the syllabus, Emanuel has taught me how to communicate with others in a leadership role and has taught me invaluable skills regarding how to carry myself and manage stress.

Ms Bauer has made a huge impact on my life and her influence is something that will continue to impact me in the future. As my Drama teacher, she pushed me out of my comfort zone and encouraged me to perform in front of others which greatly improved my confidence. Her teaching of improvisation skills has allowed me to develop the ability to think on my feet and tackle everyday challenges. She constantly inspires me to be the best version of myself whilst also looking out for me and ensuring that I am not too hard on myself. Overall, her impact will last forever, and her kind words and advice are a constant inspiration. I am particularly proud of my nomination for OnSTAGE for my HSC Drama Monologue. It was amazing to see my hard work come to fruition and be recognised by others. The highlights of my time at Emanuel were the Year 9 trip to Timor Leste, being a Peer Support Leader, and leading on the Peer Support Camp. Going to Timor Leste in Year 9 opened my eyes to a new and incredible culture. I was able to bond with both the people in my Year and those that we taught in Gildapil. The Peer Support experience is unmatched and provided me with endless learning experiences regarding supporting and leading younger Year Groups. The Camp was a definite highlight as I got to lead an amazing group of Year 7s on a camp that I remember fondly from my Year 7 experience. Next year I plan to work to save up enough money to travel and then in 2024 go to Macquarie University to study a double degree of Psychology and Arts with the long-term goal of becoming a teacher.

I consider myself to be determined, empathetic and kind and have developed a passion for social action. Within our School, we are encouraged to question the world around us and speak up on the injustices we see in our society. We are given constant information about current social justice issues and platforms are given to those who wish to comment on those issues and enact change.

I hope my friends would describe me as a deep thinker who loves to talk – a hard worker who is enthusiastic and always eager to participate in class discussions. I am kind, curious and creative, so I relished the many leadership opportunities, Drama and the Jewish Life of the School. I have loved every acting opportunity – in productions, extracurricular Theatre Sports or skits at Shabbat. It has also been amazing to develop my Jewish identity through exposure to new ideas over the years.

I am also incredibly proud of my English Major Work. The choice to write poetry at first seemed risky, but in the end, I am glad to have created a work that truly captures my personal and literary identity.

When I think of Emanuel School, I think of community and it was a perfect sandbox and microcosm for understanding the functioning, skills, and responsibilities of a leader. Throughout my early years at Emanuel, I could clearly see and experience the power of great leaders, with each Madrichim body representing a gleaming model of empowerment, fun, and culture. The Hadracha course in Jewish Studies then provided the skills and knowledge required for moral, effective leadership, focused on Dugma Ishit (Leading by Example) and leading without seeking personal glory. Finally, being a leader through both Peer Support and the Madrichim Body allowed me to practise my skills in a practical, safe environment. I was able to have a real impact and try out new methods of leadership in conjunction with the rest of my Year Group.

My greatest challenge has been learning to let go of control in leadership situations. Throughout High School, countless situations required collaboration with other students, whether for class projects, Jewish Life events, or as a Madrich. These situations challenged me to succeed, share and trust others and the process.

As a creative, academic student, I can compose a vision for any project, then carry out that vision. When working with others meanwhile, I was challenged to take a step back, respect my peers’ ideas and allow them to make choices and mistakes outside of my control. Ultimately, I believe that this challenge has strengthened my respect and collaborative skills, preparing me well for the future.

The greatest skill Emanuel has provided me is critical thinking and the ability to analyse. As an English-focused student, much of my studies have centred around analysing texts and dissecting the ideas that form our world. Beyond textual analysis, however, Emanuel has given me opportunities to think deeply about all aspects of the modern world, questioning everything and taking nothing for granted.

Many teachers have impacted my life but the support from Ms LyonsZwarenstein, Ms Bauer, and Ms Minton has been critical to my wellbeing in the ‘dreaded’ HSC year.

Over the next few years, I plan on studying commerce at the University of Sydney. While studying, I seek to explore new experiences and opportunities.

As a pluralistic school, Emanuel provides a supportive space for everyone to practise Judaism with acceptance and understanding.

I will fondly remember my involvement in the Jewish Life of the School. Running Shabbat, as well as Chaggim activities, was fun and exciting and is something I will never forget. Inspiring others is a responsibility and a privilege that I found challenging and exciting. I would love to return to Emanuel as a Jewish Life Leader in the future.

JEWISH LIFE AT EMANUEL

Emanuel wouldn’t be Emanuel without the incredible opportunities we have to participate in the overarching Jewish Life of the School. It changes Emanuel from just a school to a community, and a family.

Weekly Shabbatot provide a glimpse into the supportive and participatory culture that is integral to Emanuel life, with students singing, dancing and celebrating as a community. The opportunity to plan and lead these activities has taught us skills that can’t be learnt from Mathematics or Chemistry –leadership and creativity. Where else could you do a dance battle at Shabbat or a Purim parody of The Office? Through the Social Action and Sustainability Va’adot (Committees), students live the Jewish principle of Tikkun Olam, or Repairing the World. Emanuel’s Jewish spirit is spread across the School, encouraging students to get involved, engage and have fun celebrating Chaggim, customs, rituals and

As an egalitarian, pluralist Jewish school, Emanuel faces a major challenge in its practice of Judaism: how can a school maintain its Jewish identity while fostering growth and individual acceptance? And yet, it is this very struggle that creates such a powerful Jewish education. Through the Shabbatot, pe’ulot, festivals, school camps and general school culture, every student is provided with a space to grapple with their personal connection with religion. Discussions about the role of modern Jews, the adaptation of Jewish law, and the symbolism behind Torah stories are central to this growth, encouraging a strong personal identity. As a modern Jewish school, we have relished the opportunity to never blindly accept but rather grapple with the entirety of Judaism.

Additionally, Emanuel’s egalitarian values are integral to the School’s culture of acceptance and equality. All religious opportunities are presented independent of gender or sexuality. In the modern day, these values are vital in creating a safe, welcoming space for all.

Emanuel’s Jewish education has given us the tools to approach the world with a perspective of acceptance and understanding along with a powerful Jewish identity founded on discussion and community.

15

When I think of Emanuel School, the first words that come to mind are warmth and safety. Emanuel has helped me to achieve my full potential, not only through access to resources but also through the continuous help and guidance of my teachers and peers.

I am curious, determined and creative, and I hope my friends would describe me as loyal, empathetic, honest, and trustworthy. I would like to be remembered for my diligent effort and perseverance.

The highlight of my time at Emanuel School would be winning House Music this year, especially considering all the hard work undertaken by the House Captains and Year 12 cohort. It was amazing to know that all our efforts resulted in something that we could be proud of.

In Year 12, I was given the opportunity to take part in the Sustainability Va’ad (Committee) which allowed me to explore and develop my passion for the environment. This involved participating in weekly meetings and organising multiple whole school events such as Keep Australia Beautiful Week, Planet Ark’s National Recycling Week and raising money for Charity: Water. This responsibility aided in the development of my organisational and time management skills which I feel will set me up well for the next chapter of my life.

The greatest challenge I have faced during my schooling has undoubtedly been the vast interruptions to my studies in Years 10 and 11 due to the Pandemic. Despite the inherent challenges of online learning, my teachers were committed to making sure we stayed engaged and continued to enjoy learning, which I am extremely grateful for. It also highlighted the importance of resilience, with the need to adapt in this constantly changing and unfamiliar environment.

The teacher who has made the most impact on my life is Ms Korotkov. Her dedication and passion for everything she taught me always inspired me to put my best effort into everything I did. Having had her since Year 9, she heavily influenced my passion for the law and the achievement of justice within the legal system. Even though she couldn’t teach us in our final year of school, she remains the reason why I chose to pursue the study of Law at University.

I am particularly proud of the completion of my Major Works in English Extension 2 and History Extension. They were both so much more than a school project to me. Having spent hours upon hours writing and editing; a culmination of all the hard work and effort I put in over my years at school, these projects will be something I remember for many years to come.

In 2023 I plan to take a gap year to work and then travel in Israel and Europe before going to university in 2024 where I will hopefully study a double degree in Law and Communications or Arts.

Between the rigid lines of the syllabus, Emanuel School has taught me the values which exist outside of academic achievements, namely determination, passion, tenacity, kindness, gratitude, a love of learning, tradition and respect. Over my years at Emanuel, I have learnt so much more than the content covered in the curriculum and for this I will be endlessly grateful.

SUSTAINING THE WORLD

Sustainability has been important to me since I realised that our survival depends on our environment. However, this realisation was accompanied by the unfortunate understanding that most actions taken by humanity fail to consider this, or do and just don’t care.

In Year 9, I went to see Jane Goodall: Rewind the Future and my perspective on the climate changed, with my passion for sustainability intensifying tenfold. I realised that if I wanted to stand against climate change and work towards a better future, I couldn’t just talk about it – I had to take action.

Over the past year I have had the privilege of being part of the Sustainability Va’ad (Committee). This opportunity has allowed me to explore and develop my passion for sustainability and particularly climate change by taking action in the school environment.

Beginning the year online, due to the pandemic, our first events – Keep Australia Beautiful Week and the Online Climate Strike Rally – were mostly promoted through our School Sustainability Instagram account. We organised multiple posts and the success of Instagram as a platform for advertising sustainability events led us to continue using the page throughout the year.

Emanuel has been extremely supportive of students’ special interests. Challenging climate change necessitates the sustainable production and use of

resources such as water. With 771 million people lacking access to clean and safe drinking water, Eden Grynberg and I felt compelled to act. Upon raising the idea to Ms Starkey, we were able to work with the Student Representative Council to organise a whole school blue-themed plain clothes day to raise money for Charity:Water. The organisation aims to implement community water projects and help facilitate water, sanitation, and hygiene programs. Charity:Water has helped almost 15 million people across 29 countries so far.

We also attempted to introduce new compost and soft plastic bins around the School; however, the rain proved an issue to their maintenance. There were discussions about abandoning the idea of soft plastic bins altogether, but with persistence we were able to agree on the idea of a singular soft plastics bin in a central location – next to the canteen. Sadly, soft plastic recycling has now been paused in NSW and we are faced with tons of otherwise recyclable materials being moved to landfill. Overall, I have thoroughly enjoyed being part of the Sustainability Va’ad over the course of my last year at school and am so grateful to have had the opportunity to develop my passion. I can’t wait to see how the School continues to engage with the climate in a positive way and wish the next Sustainability Va’ad a green future.

“Emanuel has been my home for 13 years. It has shaped me into the person I am today.”

Emanuel School has been my home away from home. I have so many highlights, especially the trip to East Timor in 2019. I learnt so many interesting things and had so many incredible experiences which enabled me to become more confident and open to new experiences and opportunities. Another highlight was being House Captain in Year 12 and working on House Music. I had so much fun leading and organising the event, and it was such an honour and privilege to be able to bring spirit and community back to Meir after the disconnection and isolation we all felt in lockdown last year.

I had so many opportunities at Emanuel that have made an impact; my role as a Peer Support Leader in Year 11 and a House Captain in Year 12 enabled me to develop many leadership skills, such as patience, approachability and empathy. I was also given the opportunity to teach children in East Timor, and tutor Year 5 students in the School’s Wolanski Family Specialist Learning Centre, which helped me realise my passion for teaching. I have learnt about the power of leadership and the positive impact one can have on other people’s lives by being a good leader. School has also enabled me to develop and hone my values, passions and perspectives on different issues in our world.

Ms Lawrence has been a particularly supportive teacher, encouraging and challenging me throughout Years 11 and 12, and allowing me to get the most out of the Legal Studies course. Our classes were exciting and engaging, and I felt safe and comfortable sharing my ideas and asking questions. Her diligence, as well as her calm and enthusiastic energy, is a teaching style that has inspired me to pursue teaching.

My friends describe me as kind, funny and respectful, and as someone who puts her best efforts into all activities. I was proud they awarded me Mensch of Year 11. I want to be remembered for my participation and involvement in all aspects of school life and as someone who was always around to give a helping hand and step in when needed.

I am planning to go to Israel next year and then travel around Europe. When I get back, I plan on working and attending university.

JESSE HERDAN

“The more you get involved, the more fun you have, and Emanuel excels at allowing and encouraging people to get involved.”

Emanuel has a rich culture of fun and connection within our community. When I think of Emanuel, I think of the word ‘family’.

Emanuel has shaped my passion for social action through the focus on Tikkun Olam and student-led change. It has empowered me to use my voice and speak up about the issues I care about and it has helped me develop my knowledge on sustainability, the environment and climate. Through my involvement in the Sustainability Committee in Year 12, I was able to make visible changes around the School.

I am curious, enthusiastic and logical, and one of the most important skills I developed at Emanuel is problem solving. The Mathematics and Science courses, along with the chess and debating programs, encouraged me to apply logical deduction to succeed – a skill that will undeniably be invaluable throughout the next chapter of my life.

When I was younger, I used to be nervous to participate in school events. My greatest challenge was realising that getting involved is the most effective way to learn and have fun. Highlights include dancing like a ‘madman’ at weekly Shabbatot, my termly chess showdown with Mr Morley, Ayekah and Ski Camp, as well as being a leader for younger students through the Peer Support program.

I think my friends would describe me as the person who never stops asking questions and is always hungry to learn more, someone who is a massive nerd; and is proud of it. I want to be remembered as the person who was constantly getting the most fun out of school, and a conscientious person who looked out for others and cared for the environment.

Undoubtedly, Morah Becky Goldberg has had an incredible impact on who I am as a person. She has taught me something one cannot learn in class: to love life and everyone around you. She helped nurture and grow my passions through High School, and I aspire to give the same level of support to others one day.

As a House Madrich, I was lucky enough to organise and lead the House Music performances. I will always cherish the incredible House spirit, effort, and enthusiasm I saw from every single person, which to me, is far more important than winning or losing.

I think there are two key school events that I will cherish for a lifetime. Firstly, the opportunity to play in a National Chess competition with my Emanuel teammates three years in a row is an honour I will never forget. Secondly, receiving the mensch prize last year is far more meaningful to me than any academic award.

Next year I hope to take a gap year to start a business, then study Quantum Engineering and Computer Science at UNSW.

TALIA KLEVIANSKY

“Emanuel School really excels at what it does – providing each individual with an opportunity to thrive and learn as they move through their High School journey.“

Emanuel gave me incredible opportunities to learn leadership skills. The Hadracha (Jewish Leadership) course in particular stands out. Everyone is encouraged to get involved and be a leader, regardless of whether they are a part of the Madrichim Body, or not.

Emanuel helped me develop and hone my leadership skills and ability to communicate with others through my role as a Madricha. This will set me up for the next chapter in life as I feel more confident in a group setting and feel less afraid to get involved or take action.

My highlights from my time at Emanuel School include Year 9 Ski Camp, which allowed me to bond with my Year Group, and the Jilkiminggan Trip in 2018, which was truly an unforgettable experience that allowed me to learn about different cultures, give back and form connections with new people.

I feel that I am enthusiastic, kind and passionate – my friends may add bubbly to that list – and I hope to be remembered as someone who was always approachable and treated people with kindness.

I think of Emanuel as a community, and I will remember my time as a Peer Support Leader, as I truly loved the experience of forming connections with the younger years and working to make their transition into High School more enjoyable. I am also proud of my contribution to school life throughout High School, especially during my time as a Madricha. I was heavily involved in the planning and running of weekly Shabbatot, as well as playing a key role in the Sports Va’ad (Committee) where we were able to run a highly successful Lexi Bader Futsal Competition.

Ms McGrath, my Maths teacher for my final years, and my mentor, has made the most impact in my life. She embodies passion and enthusiasm in what she does and never fails to express care and empathy for those around her. Ms McGrath made the final years of school much easier and was always a shoulder to lean on. She has always treated me and those around me with kindness and I will never forget the impact she had on my High School experience.

In the next few years, I hope to work and travel for some time before going to university. I also hope to volunteer overseas.

I have learnt never to be afraid to try something new, because it is the moments where we push ourselves out of our comfort zone that we can truly grow as individuals.

I think my friends would describe me as a tall, extroverted guy who is very happy around friends. They would probably say I enjoy playing music and sport, and love to be out and about, whether at a friend’s house, at the beach, the Basketball Courts or anywhere else. I think of myself as determined, driven and happy. I want to be remembered for being Mr Bartlett’s favourite student and for being that one guitar guy at Shabbatot!

Mr Bartlett has probably had the largest impact on my life. He has taught me a plethora of skills, including the ability to articulate my thoughts, draw connections between different concepts and occasionally stepping back to look at the bigger picture. He has always promoted deep learning rather than just rote learning and memorising concepts which has led Economics to become one of my favourite subjects. Our Economics classes were always so much fun and full of laughs and banter, which further propelled my interest in the subject.

The hardest challenge I’ve faced is keeping motivated during long periods of study. When I find myself studying for days on end, I really struggle to keep in mind the end goal, which is normally a certain date or event. However, I’ve found the challenge is reduced significantly by taking breaks and spending time with friends in between working. I developed a strong ability to manage my time and keep focused under pressure. With the goal of studying Medicine in the future, being able to remain calm under pressure and perform optimally is extremely important.

I know I’ll remember all the music concerts I’ve been a part of. Learning the music was so much fun, gaining the confidence to perform on stage – starting from being part of large bands, to small rock bands, all the way to playing guitar in the production of Grease – has been important for me. Playing music with a variety of amazing musicians was a highlight. I will also definitely remember all the work I’ve put in towards getting into Medicine, including my UCAT which I couldn’t have done without the help of Ms Pech.

In 2023, I’m planning on taking the year off to relax and enjoy having nothing on my plate for a while. Ideally, I’d tutor for the first six months of the year, then head around the world with all my friends. In 2024, I plan on commencing university, hopefully studying Medicine (BMed/ MD) at UNSW. Looking into the future, once I graduate, I would love to pursue a specialty in surgery, specifically transplant surgery, an interest that was sparked in me following Year 9 Biology.

Being a Mensch to me is all about giving back and committing selfless acts without the goal of being praised – simply doing it out of the kindness of your heart. I have learned the importance of forming strong connections with other people in my life, specifically my friends. Emanuel promotes the ideas of connection and community, which I have really tried to channel in High School, so I can try to maintain the relationships I have developed over my school years.

“Emanuel has made me who I am. Like my second home, this school has nurtured and welcomed me with open arms. Thinking about my memories here makes me smile, and I think that’s very telling of the space Emanuel School creates.”

I would like to be remembered as the girl with the big smile, who hopefully helped foster an approachable and welcoming space in the School. I also hope to be remembered for my leadership, not just for the positives, but for the challenges that I faced with balancing all facets of my Year 12 life. I think a crucial part of leadership isn’t just being a leader while you’re in Year 12, but inspiring younger future leaders who will one day be in your shoes. I hope that they look to my experience to inspire them or help them, and to remind them that the best way to lead is with heart and with a smile.

My extra-curricular activities were certainly a highlight during my time at Emanuel – being in choirs and soccer teams, playing touch football and participating in creative arts and English programs. The highlights of my time at Emanuel have been the ability to channel my various passions into my school life, and to grow my skills in each respective area.

Coming into Year 12, it was of the utmost importance that I use my leadership position to create a warm, enthusiastic, and generally positive Year Group environment. Every event I’ve pushed for and planned this year –from a Purim fete to a Year Group evening, Friday fundraisers to the creation of a mural that represents the spirit and growth of our Year Group – has been designed for the incredible cohort and friends that surround me. I feel that, over everything, my time in leadership has been my most important and treasured achievement.

The three different Major Works that I completed each allowed me to channel my creative skills, and I have left High School knowing that the completion of these Major Works has been one of my greatest achievements and learning experiences. Sticking with a large Visual Arts Major work, a History Extension Essay and a large literary script for Extension 2 English have allowed me to focus on large projects and chip away at something big throughout the year. The incredibly rewarding feeling that completing my Major Works has given me is something I will carry with me in my future as I continue my love for art, writing, and history.

Leadership qualities aren’t exclusive to big school events. In truth, leadership shows itself best in the little things: in a smile to an unknown person across the hall, in politely letting someone pass, or in engaging with others around you in an empathetic and kind way. Leadership for me goes beyond what we do as Head Madrichim on the stage; it’s all about the way you treat your community outside of that.

At school, the most crucial thing I learnt was that the key to success is to study what you love. Picking my Year 12 subjects, I chose 11 units of English, Arts and Humanities subjects that I was keenly interested in. Ultimately, my work was interesting and enjoyable because I chose my subjects based on my interests and passions.

This year, every single one of my teachers has been amazing in catering to my personal learning style and creating a warm and inclusive class environment. Mr Camp has made a huge impact on me this year as my Advanced and 4-Unit English teacher. His devotion to helping me with my Major Work fostered my personal passion for English, and the spirit with which he teaches has impacted me immensely this year. My metafictive, postmodern piece is the result of a year’s worth of working with Mr Camp, who marked all my drafts and gave me feedback consistently when I needed it most. His dedication and love for English has impacted my continued love for creative writing and literature. My goal is to do a Law degree combined with Arts or Communications; but first, I’m going to Israel on the Yalla program with my friends!

A LEADER AMONG US

Emanuel School has made us the leaders we are. Coming into such a compassionate and welcoming community, our love for the School grew exponentially every year, and we found encouragement from the people around us to pursue our passion for leadership, and most importantly for Tikkun Olam and Social Action.

Our experiences as leaders have been multifaceted, yet each incredibly rewarding. Our time as Head Madrichim kickstarted with a Capital Appeal, run entirely over Zoom, from our own bedrooms. With the phenomenal work and support of the Marketing team, and with a couple pairs of brightly coloured sunglasses, we hosted over 800 online guests and looked into Emanuel’s Bright Future. Later on in the year, we were able to join special guests for the new building’s groundbreaking event, where we saw firsthand the power of a community coming together in support of an important project.

A crucial program during our time at Emanuel has been the Nitzavim program. The word ‘Nitzav’ is a Hebrew word meaning ‘one who stands’, and is the word used to describe any and all of the Year 12s who help lead the School, whether it be running programs for the students, organising important events, contributing to the Jewish Life of the School and so on. We would all as Madrichim or Nitzavim meet up in Va’adot (Committees), to work together and take part in running the School, with groups such Social Action, Festivals (Chaggim), Sport, Sustainability, Shabbat and more.

The Nitzavim program encourages leadership across the Year Group. As happy as we were to be the Head Madrichim, we were even happier to see our peers become Nitzavim and play an essential part in running

the School and guiding the student body. It resulted in us feeling a greater connection as a Year Group that led together.

The most important lesson we carried with us was that a leader must always be a ‘Dugma Ishit’ (meaning ‘to lead by personal example’). In fact, we believe all leaders – student and adult alike – must hold with them the notion of Dugma Ishit. As we graduate, this notion of leading by example will guide us as we continue to strive for compassion, kindness and enthusiasm within our personal leadership journeys.

“To be a leader, you do not need a crown or robes of office. All you need to do is to write your chapter in the story, do deeds that heal some of the pain of this world, and act so that others become a little better for having known you. Live so that, through you, our ancient covenant with God is renewed in the only way that matters: in life. Moses’s last testament to us at the very end of his days, when his mind might so easily have turned to death, was: choose life.”

“When I think of Emanuel, I think of the phrase ‘Mind Spirit Being’.”

I am likely to be remembered as being the IT guy for eight years so if I was to describe myself in three words, it would be “have you restarted?”. Although it has been challenging to only use the laptops for productive purposes, my Software classes have been a highlight.

There have been a lot of good times at Emanuel School. In particular, I enjoyed learning about and setting up the Audio-Visual equipment for events with Ben Marshall, the School’s AV Technician. Developing this skill is something that has been very useful and I am proud of myself for co-ordinating the lighting for House Music almost every year. My friends would describe me as someone who likes to explain random things and as someone who talks too much – that said, they still come to me with their IT issues!

Next year I’m taking half a gap year, followed by university (hopefully UNSW) to study a double degree (BSc Engineering/BSc Science), where I’ll be majoring in Computer Engineering, and either Physics or Maths in Science.

Ms Selinger had the most impact on my life. Although I didn’t have her for Year 12, she made a big impact on how I viewed Science, something I’m now considering pursuing in university.

Reflecting over my school years, it is a great personal achievement that I completed Year 12 with my year. When I think of the School, I think of family, and I developed friendship skills that will set me up for my next chapter in life. I am told that my friends consider me to be kind and thoughtful, always with a smile on my face and a great friend.

I hope to be remembered for being respectful, friendly and for my love of soccer – a highlight for me was that on the first day of Year 6 I scored a bicycle kick. I also found my interest in, and appreciation for, retro songs through House Music. The greatest challenge I faced during my schooling was not being able to go on Chavayah with my friends.

As a driven, passionate student, I hope to be remembered for my commitment to the for community and developing Emanuel’s sense of spirit. I hope to have promoted the importance of connection by guiding Rashi through online House events during the uncertainty of COVID-19 times. I additionally hope to have shared my enthusiasm in Performing Arts with the wider community through my musical performances.

Emanuel School has been like a second home to me, and the highlight of my week is Friday morning ruach, which allows the whole school to connect through song and dance and embrace Emanuel’s inimitable spirit. Other highlights of my time at Emanuel School include annual school camps, particularly Year 9 Ski Camp. These allowed my cohort to evolve into a tight-knit community, which, by the end of Year 12, became something like a family.

My House tutor, Morah Becky Goldberg, is like my second mum. Over the past years, she has been enthusiastic, devoted and patient with all her students. Through her wise, honest, and authentic guidance, she created a safe environment where all her students could seek support.

Through my positions as Rashi House Madricha, Peer Support Leader, and Student Representative Council, I have developed core teamwork, organisational and leadership skills that will unquestionably set me up for my next chapter in life. Further, by being granted the opportunity to perform in all musical productions since Year 7, I have developed my confidence and learnt how to adapt to diverse situations under pressure.

My personal achievements include my Peer Support Leader position, which allowed me to guide and bond with Year 7 students as they transitioned into High School. Additionally, my position as Rashi House Madricha was integral to developing my ability to work well in a team.

My favourite memories were performing in all Emanuel musical productions, including Legally Blonde, Into the Woods, and Grease. I bonded with my cast members and shared Emanuel’s appreciation for Performing Arts with the wider community. I will also remember moderating the Social Action Va’ad’s 2022 Night of Dangerous Conversations, during which we invited the wider community to engage with controversial, yet critical, discussions about sex education.

On top of winning the 2022 Ezekiel Cup, my favourite House-related memory was witnessing Rashi’s devoted preparations and tight-knit community come to life during our unforgettably spirited House Music 2022.

At school, I learnt to be inclusive and accepting of all, take every opportunity, and think critically about the ever-changing world around me. My friends would describe me as the tall, curly haired girl who works hard, gets involved, and places a high value on community. It has been said that I am a funny friend who has always got other people’s backs, and that I am an upstander, always looking to make positive change within the School.

In 2023, I plan on attending a five-month program in Israel before travelling and volunteering around the globe. The following year, I am considering taking a double Law and Arts degree at UNSW or ANU.

My greatest challenge was the sudden increase in my workload when accelerating in Maths Extension 1 and completing multiple Major Works in my HSC. Those presented a challenge which I initially felt unprepared for; however, Emanuel School’s network of support mechanisms, alongside the comforting nature of my teachers and peers, guided me and enabled me to complete my final years with a smile.

“Emanuel School is such an inclusive community that has come to mean so much more to me than simply a physical campus – it has built me into the person I am today and cultivates an amazing atmosphere for students to excel.”

Maintaining motivation, particularly during the many years of lockdown, was the greatest challenge I faced during my schooling, but I have learnt to embrace change as an opportunity for growth and learning. Reflecting over my school years, I am most proud of my persistence and determination in completing the accelerated Mathematics course in Year 11.

Ms Korotkov has made an extremely significant impact on my life due to her dedication to teaching. She is an extremely engaging teacher and her positive attitude and commitment have been greatly missed over the past year. I am pleased for younger students that she has returned to Emanuel. Being a mensch means to be an empathetic and approachable person who strives to treat all others with kindness and consideration. I strive to be compassionate, thoughtful, and optimistic and I hope to be remembered for my dedication and positive contributions to the school community. My friends would most likely describe me as a humorous and conscientious friend.

Next year, I plan on taking a gap year and completing a program in Israel followed by a period of travelling around Europe. I then plan to undertake a Bachelor of Commerce and Bachelor of Advanced Studies at the University of Sydney.

TORI SHAPIRO

One of my main highlights from my time at Emanuel School would have to be ruach as a unique Emanuel tradition that always boosted my spirit and sense of community. It served to connect students across different cohorts in an enthusiastic environment.

“Emanuel provides a path to guide and shape you into the person you are truly meant to be.”

Emanuel School is an inclusive and positive environment, welcoming to everyone.

At the School, I developed personal skills through leadership opportunities including being a Meir House Madricha. I developed teamwork and communications skills which will help me in the future as they are important skills for my chosen career of teaching. I hope to be remembered as an approachable, kind and caring person and leader.

I have learnt useful interpersonal skills such as how to communicate with peers and how to be respectful within a school or workplace. I am empathetic, caring and dependable, and my friends know that I am never afraid to speak my mind or stand up for what I believe in.

Emanuel supported my participation in sports and provided me with a variety of opportunities such as playing Touch Football since Year 7, being involved within the Basketball program and, over my final year of High School, the Soccer firsts team.

One of the many highlights from my time at Emanuel School was House Music 2022. Creating the dance, teaching the rest of Meir and having fun dancing and singing with the whole House was such an amazing experience.

As I reflect on my time at Emanuel, I would say a personal achievement is being a House Madricha as it has been an honour to be a leader and make a positive impact on the School.

Next year I plan to go on the Yalla Israel trip and then travel around the world.

Ms Lawrence has made the biggest impact on my life because she is kind, smart and helps me achieve my full potential. She also inspires me to be the type of teacher she is in my future career.

When I think of Emanuel School, I think of opportunity – a place where the wildest passion can be catered for. My highlights include the countless sporting opportunities I have been given including AICES Tennis, Swimming and CIS Soccer, being able to accelerate Maths because of the support of Ms Lyons-Zwarenstein and co-founding the Investment Club alongside Gabriel Tracton with the support of Mr Symonds. Ski Camp and all the opportunities to travel with my peers for camps were also highlights and provided opportunities to connect with other students.

Accelerating Extension 1 Maths in Year 11 provided me with valuable time management skills, which have proven useful to me in Year 12, with balancing extra-curricular activities with sport and the HSC. I would like to be remembered for my multifaceted contribution to the School in the areas of sport, academics and as a co-founder of the Investment Club which had the remit of uncovering the possibilities of finance careers and entrepreneurship to students.

In life you have to be proactive, because opportunities aren’t going to fall on your lap. I never applied for a traditional leadership role within the School; however, I wanted to combine my interest in investing/ entrepreneurship with the leadership opportunity that co-founding an Investment Club can provide. Not only has this enhanced my passion for finance and my leadership skills, but it has provided like-minded Emanuel students with knowledge outside of the confines of the classroom. I will remember this amazing opportunity as it has enabled much of my growth in Year 12, and hopefully the reins of the Club will be passed down so that many generations of Emanuel students will have the same opportunity.

From my first class of Year 9 Business Creators to Year 12 Economics, Mr Bartlett has always been the most entertaining and spontaneous person at school while simultaneously being one of the best teachers I have ever had. Mr Bartlett has impacted me by always seeing the lighter side of things and being such a hardworking and supportive teacher – taking hours of time out of his schedule to help his students grasp more complex concepts.

Ms Lyons-Zwarenstein was also a positive and supportive teacher throughout High School and gave me so much confidence going into my accelerated Maths HSC.

Over the next few years, I plan to do a double degree with Commerce at UNSW, while working in finance and starting some businesses.

Emanuel offers a diverse set of electives to Year 9 students. The Business Creators course sparked my interest in investment and business. By studying Economics in Year 12 and learning more about financial markets/careers, it became apparent that I should be able to impart this passion to other students. With the help and encouragement of the teachers and the culture at Emanuel which allows you to explore your passion, Gabriel Tracton and I promoted the rewarding hobbies and career paths available in the investment world.

The Investment Club provides an opportunity for students who are passionate and excited by the world of finance and business to meet and share ideas.

ENCOURAGING PROJECTS

Many of the students have extended their knowledge of the financial markets through hearing from industry leading guest speakers and our weekly market overview (Bull VS Bear). This overview is shared at the start of each meeting, highlighting key news that has affected financial markets in the short and long term. Following this, students have heard from guest speakers including Steven Marks (CEO of Guzman Y Gomez), Russel Pillemer (CEO of Pengana Capital) and Gavin Rubinstein (Founder of TRG), to name a few. We learnt about the driving factors to succeed in the finance industry and the world of entrepreneurship. The many questions asked of our guest speakers helped us to gain unique insight beyond the classroom. Students who are curious and passionate about the topic had the opportunity to present about a financial topic of their choice. Initially, we wanted to create a space where students could explore their finance and business passions, while providing an opportunity to network with and learn from Australian business leaders, speakers who have innovated in their respective fields. This has inspired students to chase their dreams and consider diverse career paths.

We were supported by teachers who also have an interest in the worlds of business and finance. They helped guide us, encourage us and dealt with much of the administration required to create this new club. The supportive culture at Emanuel has been a driving force in the success of this new studentdriven club. Our interests in investing in different asset classes such as equities and cryptocurrency as well as entrepreneurship motivated us to create this Club and create a platform for like-minded students. As we hand over the reins to the incoming Year 12 students, we wish them success in all their endeavours. We will be with them in spirit as they navigate their futures.

“Learning at Emanuel School has continually challenged and prepared me for my future.”

Emanuel School has enabled me to develop my interest in business and finance through providing a platform to run the Investment Club – where I was able to present findings of interesting topics, network with top CEOs and share my passion with likeminded students.

Co-founding the Investment Club has been the highlight of my time at Emanuel. Seeing over 100 students attend one of our club meetings, with students telling me how inspired they were by our guest speakers has been truly fulfilling. Being able to secure top Australian CEOs to present at the Investment Club meetings was a great personal achievement, as was being able to run my business successfully while balancing the demands of Year 12.

Mr Symonds took me for both Economics and Business Studies. Aside from being a great teacher, he encouraged me to apply myself outside of the classroom and enthusiastically supported me as a co-founder of the Investment Club, contributing to my success at Emanuel School.

I am known for being extremely passionate about commerce and business, for initiating the first Emanuel School Investment Club, and starting a social media marketing business. I hope to be remembered for these, for being “the TikTok guy” and my optimistic mindset.

Emanuel is a school where the individual excels and, as an ambitious person, I have come to the knowledge that learning from failures is more valuable than learning from successes. I developed a good work ethic and organisational skills at the School which will be valuable as I move through life, grow my business, travel and work in the finance industry.

I like to think of myself as hardworking, optimistic and upbeat and, although I somehow managed to frequently wear the wrong uniform, I always had a positive attitude and offered to help when needed. I have an egalitarian approach to life and that means choosing to be as impartial as possible and to treat everyone as equals. My friends would say that I am funny and kind and also a great friend who never fails to put a smile on your face.

Balancing social and academic commitments so I could do my best at school while maintaining a healthy life outside of school was a challenge. I hope my friends would describe me as hardworking and driven as well as friendly, funny and loyal.

Highlights of my time at Emanuel include the East Timor trip and Ski Camp – both in 2019 – and the Swimming Carnivals. A personal achievement that I take pride in was being involved in Shabbat.

Ms Shanahan gave me a love for literature and an ability to think critically and independently both within and outside the classroom. She is funny, kind, and caring, and is always seeking to brighten someone else’s day. I won’t forget the good times in Extension English.

I hope to take some time off next year to travel to Israel and after that I plan to study at university.

A few of my school highlights would include playing a lead role in the High School production of Grease, 2022 House Music as a Szenes House Madrich, going on the Year 7 Survival Camp as a Peer Support Leader in 2021, and weekly Shabbat ruach! Being cast as Danny Zuko for the 2021 production of Grease really sparked my passion for all things music. Since then, music has become a central aspect of my life, and I hope to find ways to continue to play and sing into the future.

Going into senior High School, I was quite unsure of what I wanted to do after I graduated. It was through Mr Bartlett’s classes in both Years 11 and 12 that I discovered my love for all things Economics and led to me deciding to choose Economics for my future studies and possibly career. Mrs Lyons-Zwarenstein, my Maths teacher through my HSC year, has impacted my life considerably. She has taught me that, above all else, kindness, love and compassion are the most important traits to uphold, something I truly hope to shape my future around.

My proudest achievement from my time at Emanuel School was receiving the Mensch Award, as it recognised my love for my community and my consistent striving to embody Emanuel’s core values of kindness and empathy.

The greatest challenge I faced was juggling the pressures associated with studying with my extra-curricular activities and hobbies, such as Basketball, Music and socialising.

I consider myself to be enthusiastic, kind-hearted and determined, and I hope my friends would describe me as a kind, compassionate and determined person – someone who always thinks about others before himself and is motivated to do the right thing no matter what. I would love to be remembered for my enthusiasm, passionate personality and for hopefully creating a welcoming community during my time as a leader.

After going on a 5-week program to Israel in 2023, I plan on working for the following six months to save up for a gap year. This trip will hopefully involve both being a camp counsellor for an 8-week American summer camp and travelling Europe with my friends. After returning, I am aiming to begin university at the start of 2024 to study both Economics and Psychology at UNSW.

The School has taught me the value of treating people with kindness and respect, listening to their opinions and being truly open-minded. These concepts have not only helped me throughout school but have also given me the base to build genuine connections with others.

A PERFECTBALANCE

Throughout our High School years, Emanuel has provided us with numerous opportunities that encouraged us to participate in a range of different sports and hone our passions. During these years, we have taken part in the School’s sport teams including Football, Touch Football, Basketball and the EActive program. Through our involvement in these teams, Emanuel has helped progress and support our interests, meet new people and develop our leadership skills.

Sport at Emanuel provides an opportunity for everyone. Whether it’s to try a new sport, gain competitive experience or meet new people, participating in sport over the years has been a thoroughly rewarding and enjoyable experience. Emanuel continues to support and encourage all students to give new sports a go, as well as acknowledging the amazing achievements that students accomplish. The School provides the perfect balance of sporting opportunities – the ability to pursue competitive pathways, as well as a strong emphasis on participation and stepping out of your comfort zone.

As we reached our senior years, this encouragement contributed to our participation in the Sport Va’ad,

the main committee at Emanuel to run Inter-House activities for the rest of High School. As active members of the Sport Va’ad in 2022, we have had the opportunity to run a range of fun and competitive competitions between the Houses. Lockdown didn’t hold the Sports Va’ad back, as we joined together to run the online Inter-House Olympics to motivate our peers during their time at home. Despite restrictions following the return to school, we managed to run an Inter-House dodgeball competition with the help of the younger Years, as they stepped up to referee games. Through this, we were able to contribute to our Year Group’s goal of creating a culture of leadership.

During our time on the Sports Va’ad, we were strongly supported, especially during the difficulties of lockdown. Ms Genc acted as a fantastic mentor and guide as we navigated the challenges of running and organising events. We are truly grateful for everything she has done. Without Emanuel and the opportunity to participate and lead on the sporting field, we wouldn’t be finishing school as confident young adults with a love for sport.

“Emanuel provided me with the opportunity to develop my skills and love for sport, encouraging me to pursue competitive pathways and develop my leadership skills. These valuable lessons and skills are transferable both on and off the field.” (Talia)

“When coming to Emanuel, sport was something that I wasn’t very confident in. The Emanuel community, coaches, staff and other team members all encouraged me to give it a go and try my best. Through this encouragement and support, my confidence levels began to rise and I was able to participate in the sports that I loved.” (Tammy)

“Emanuel has heightened my love for sport, providing me with amazing opportunities, leadership skills and new friendships. Through Emanuel’s support, encouragement and inclusivity, my passion for sport has grown as I have been able to participate in a range of sports out of my comfort zone.” (Layla)
