Gowanda Sports Report

BY BILL PEGLOWSKI GOWANDA — The Gowanda Varsity girls volleyball team hosted North Collins on Oct. 18, the highlight game of the fall sports season. There were long volleys, amazing saves and great net play that went on for over two hours.

Game 1 remained close to a 5-5 score before North Collins surged out to a 10-5 lead.

With North Collins holding a 16-10 lead, Gowanda began to claw their way back into the game and fi nally was able to tie things up at 23. A one-point advantage went back and forth as the score moved to 26 before Gowanda secured back-to-back points for the 28-26 win.

Gowanda scored the fi rst three points in Game 2 only to have North Collins come back to tie the score at 5. The teams exchanged one-point leads through 16-16. A er a brief two-point North Collins lead, Gowanda took control back to go up 23-18. From that point, Gowanda was able to hold on for a 25-19 win to go up 2-0 in the match.

North Collins hung tough starting out 6-3 in Game 3. Gowanda was able to tie things at 8 on the way to an 11-9 lead of their own.

From a score of 14-14, North Collins made a fi nal surge.

They opened up a 23-16 lead and were able to hold on for a 25-20 win moving the match score to 2-1.

WNY Land Conservancy sets virtual event to ‘Save Allegany Wildlands’

Gowanda ba led back and was able to tie the score at 19 and, eventually, grab a 24-22 lead, but match point eluded them. Again there was a procession of tie scores up to 26-26 before North Collins evened the match at two with a 28-26 win.

With their two-game advantage gone, Gowanda opened up a 6-1 lead in the fi nal game. Although North Collins did catch up at 12-12, they never had a lead in the game. Gowanda pulled into a 17-13 advantage and pushed that to a 25-19 victory in the game for a 3-2 match win.

It was North Collins’ last league game giving them a 12-2 record looking forward to the playoffs. With the win.

Gowanda and Randolph both held 11-2 league records with one league game le . For Gowanda, that last league game was on Oct. 20 at Pine Valley. The Gowanda girls nailed down a 3-0 match win with game scores of 25-23, 2512 and 25-15. Ten Gowanda players were credited with kills in the game. Randolph also won their fi nal league game pu ing Gowanda, Randolph and North Collins into a 3-way tie at 12-2 in the CCAA East looking forward to playoffs.

Once the goal is met, the conservancy will purchase the land and keep it open as a publicly accessible nature preserve forever.

To kick off the fi nal fundraising push of the campaign, the conservancy would host a free virtual event on Oct. 27, featuring Marx, from 7 to 8 p.m.

A endees would also hear from Jajean Rose-Burney, deputy executive director of the WNY Land Conservancy, about how they can save the Allegany Wildlands.

The public is encouraged to a end the free event, but anyone who wishes to watch must register. Prior to the event, all registrants will receive a link to watch it on YouTube.

“Although the event is free, we encourage all registrants to donate to save the Allegany Wildlands,” Semmel said.

Six American chestnut trees more than 40 feet tall still survive at the Allegany Wildlands, some of which are producing seeds, Semmel said. Large oaks, a threatened lily called a

White Clintonia, and rare orchids also grow here. Underneath the forest canopy, black bears and bobcats roam the ridges and ravines.

The property was purchased by the Sluga family in the early 1800s. Though the Sluga family has decided to sell the land, for the next chapter of this forest’s story, they want it protected, Semmel said.

Protecting the Allegany Wildlands represents the fi rst act of the Land Conservancy’s ambitious, decades-long project it’s calling the Western New York Wildway. The Wildway will be a connected corridor of protected lands that stretches from the vast forests of northern Pennsylvania to the Great Lakes, through to the Finger Lakes, the Adirondacks, and beyond. It will form part of the Eastern Wildway which runs all the way from Canada to the Gulf of Mexico.

Semmel said, “The Wildway will allow plants and animals to migrate across the land as they once did, it will allow those that have disappeared from our region to return home, and it will allow those in need to move around to new homes as climate changes.”

The Allegany Wildlands is already connected to 7,000 acres of protected state land, nestled between Allegany State Park and South Valley State Forest, and it is a significant link in this future Western New York Wildway, he said.

If the Land Conservancy community cannot meet its fundraising goal by Dec. 31,

it could be logged and developed, Semmel said.

Marx will explain to participants in the free Allegany Wildlands virtual event the impact of saving forests like the Allegany Wildlands has on the larger Eastern Wildway.

“The Eastern Wildway seeks to address this challenge head-on, and we’re thrilled that the Land Conservancy is joining us in our effort to create a large-scale habitat corridor running up and down the east coast,” he said. “The Allegany Wildlands is an important piece of that effort.”

The Land Conservancy is looking for donations of all sizes in order to save the Allegany Wildlands. A $200,000 donation will enable the donor to name the area being preserved.

Stop22 Walk-A-Thon Veterans The rain on October 16th didn’t keep the VFW Auxilary 6472 in Silver Creek from the Stop22 Walk-a-thon in support of prevention and awareness of veteran suicide.

Auxiliary President Deanna Borrello was overwhelmed with the response from the community! We raised $1,000 for the home-

less veterans project co-sponsored by Humana Insurance.

A ending were the Forestville American Legion, The Girl Scouts, The Sky Riders 4H from Forestville, Auxiliaries from Gowanda Post 5007 and Sheridan Post 6390, Silver Creek Senior Citizens and the Village Town Board.

It was wonderful to see

families walking together for our veterans. The walk ended at the Silver Creek VFW where refreshment were provided.

A presentation was given by Albert Merrill, Veterans Administration Services.

on Oct. 21, hosting Lake Shore, the No. 3 team in ECIC III behind Springville and Depew. Despite taking game three to a 26-24 fi nal score, Gowanda lost that match 3-0.

Gowanda (#2) will face Silver Creek (#7) when sectional competition begins on Friday.

— The Gowanda Varsity football team forfeited a scheduled Oct. 22 home game against Salamanca.

This closed out the regular season schedule and was the second time Gowanda had been forced to take a forfeit loss. There were still individual highlights from the football season.

Gavin Phillips led the team in rushing with 237 yards and three touchdowns on 41 carries. Quarterback Maddox Browning ran the ball 51 times for 226 yards and three touchdowns. Browning completed 49 of 94 passes this season for 709 yards and seven touchdowns. Noah Geiger had 13 receptions for 260 yards and three touchdowns. Right behind him was Noah Vogtli with 259 yards and two touchdowns on 19 catches.

— The Pine Valley-Gowanda Varsity boys soccer team (No. 10) traveled to Cassadaga Valley-Falconer (No. 7) on Oct. 19 for a B2 Pre-Quarter Finals game.

Just over halfway through the fi rst quarter, CV-F scored the fi rst goal of the game.

They added another one six minutes later. With just six minutes le in the half, Wayne Libby scored for PVG. Owen Ward was credited with an assist. There was no further scoring in the game and PV-G came up on the short end of a 2-1 score.

— The Pine Valley-Gowanda Varsity girls soccer team (No. 9) also had a B2 Pre-Quarter Finals game.

They were at Eden (No. 8) for a game under the lights.

The outcome was very similar to what the boys had seen at Cassadaga Valley.

Eden opened the scoring 8:30 into the fi rst half. Just under eight minutes later, Eden was up 2-0. In the remaining just over an hour of the game, there was no further scoring. The Eden goalie faced only five shots in a game that was largely played in the PV-G end of the field. PV-G goalie Sydney Dahl was 13/15 in goal for the night. With seven minutes le in the game, Pine Valley put ninth grader Danielle West in goal. West stopped all three Eden shots that came her way. Dahl, who will be graduating this year, had logged 1,253 minutes in

— The Gowanda cross country teams competed at Southwestern on Oct. 19 along with Allegany-Limestone and Fredonia. While Southwestern dominated the event, Gowanda did have some noteworthy individual results. Among the boys, Gowanda’s Drew Shull fi nished 6th overall. Calie Hudson fi nished 4th to pace the Gowanda girls.

The Gowanda runners were at the Sunset Stampede at Evangola State Park on Oct. 22 along with 25 other schools in two divisions. Top fi nishers for the Gowanda boys in Division 2, out of 93 runners, were Drew Schull (10th, 18:49.00) and Jayson Twoguns (30th, 19:53.08).

Also representing Gowanda were Cole Herman, Riley Olsen, Nikolas Ondus and Seth Kaminski. Calie Hudson led the Gowanda girls fi nishing 5th out of 56 Division 2 girls. Miranda Kaminski, Alhanna Gabel, Willow Mentley-Peters and Alaina Kaczmarczyk also competed for the Gowanda girls team — The Gowanda-Pine Valley girls swimming team competed at Frewsburg on Oct. 20. Two Gowanda swim-

mers scored double bronze in the meet, Molly Sunick (200Y Individual Medley, 3:17.74; 100Y Backstroke, 1:34.97) and Sophia Jones (200Y Freestyle, 2:56.17; 100Y Breaststoke, 1:48.82).

The pair also combined with Nataliee Vecchio and Carlie Ward to take 3rd in the 200Y Medley Relay (2:51.39).

On Oct. 23, the swimming team was at the CCAA Girls Swimming Championship held at Olean with 8 other schools. The highlight performance was Sophia Jones’ 3rd Place fi nish in the 200Y Freestyle (2:31.65).

— The Gowanda trap team had their lowest scoring week of the fall season.

Their score of 665.00 was almost 90 below their lowest week of the season to date, allowing Chi¨enango to capture the top score for the week with 737.50. Even so, Gowanda is still on top for total score on the season with 3,050 for four weeks.

Chi¨enango is second with 2,850.50 and Morristown is third with 2,599. The Week 3 individual rankings released this week show several Gowanda shooters still highly ranked in the state and in the Conference 5, including Tyler Smith (No. 1 conference, No. 6 state), Lo-

gan Lukonaitis (No. 3, No. 12), TJ Ackley JR. (No. 5, No. 15), Daniel Stang (No. 9 conference), Daniel Humphrey and Adam Golden (No. 11),

ERIE COUNTY, NY – The Erie County Department of Health (ECDOH) is recognizing National Lead Poisoning Prevention Week from October 24-30, 2021.

“Lead is a poison, full stop,” said Commissioner of Health Dr. Gale Burstein.

“Parents, pediatricians and public health are all partners in identifying children who have been poisoned by lead within their home or other se¢ ings with blood lead level screening at ages 1 and 2.

Our department’s Childhood Lead Poisoning Prevention Program works with every family in Erie County with a child who has an elevated blood lead level. Public health nurses notify parents of their child’s results and offer in-

tensive education on the dangers of lead. And, our public health sanitarians assess the properties where these children live or visit frequently, to identify sources of lead exposure and ways to eliminate those sources.”

About 3.3 million American households, including 2.1 million low-income households, have children under 6 years of age who live in homes with lead exposure hazards.

Even relatively low levels of lead exposure can impair a child’s cognitive development. Children with blood lead levels can experience delayed growth and development, damage to the brain and nervous system, learning and behavior problems, and a host of other health-re-

lated problems. Public health actions are needed for these children. There is no safe blood lead level in children.

“Education is the key, on two fronts,” said Dr. Burstein. “First, pediatricians should screen one- and two-year-olds for elevated blood lead levels at annual well child visits, and engage in discussions with parents and caregivers about lead in and around the home, especially if a house or apartment was built in 1978 or before.

Second, we want to educate property owners and renters on potential sources of lead exposure, and give them access to resources to make renovations and repairs in leadsafe ways.”
