Michael J. Fox goes ‘Back to the Future’
It’s always fun to look back at a movie that’s so original, it has endured as a pop-culture staple ever since, and “Back to the Future” remains such a picture in its 40th-anniversary year. Freeform shows the 1985 comedy-fantasy from Steven Spielberg’s Amblin company on Sunday, Sept. 21, and Monday, Sept. 22, with Michael J. Fox — who already was enjoying television popularity on “Family Ties” — adding movie stardom as Marty McFly, a teen skateboarder and guitarist who gets a very surprising opportunity to travel back in time. His literal vehicle for the journey is a drastically enhanced DeLorean car, engineered by scientist “Doc” Brown (Christopher Lloyd), and the circumstances enable Marty to oversee the relationship between the two people destined to become his parents (Lea Thompson, Crispin Glover). Featuring the hit theme song “The Power of Love” by Huey Lewis and the News, the film delivers enormous and clever fun under the direction of co-writer Robert Zemeckis (“Forrest Gump,” 1994); it extended to two sequels, the first of which also will be shown by Freeform immediately following the original film.
“The Girl With Something Extra” (Catchy Comedy, Sunday, Sept. 21): Before she became a two-time Oscar recipient and a three-time Primetime Emmy winner, Sally Field paid her dues in TV sitcoms, one of which was this 1973-74 NBC show (sharing a “Binge” day here with Field’s series version of “Gidget”). The “something extra” her character has is ESP, which makes life complicated for her adoring but flummoxed new husband (singer-actor John Davidson). Teri Garr had a supporting role in the show created by Bernard Slade, who also enjoyed success as a playwright with “Same Time, Next Year,” “Tribute” and “Romantic Comedy.”
