Gowanda native performs at Hollywood Theater at start of busy summer, fall

BY BILL PEGLOWSKI GOWANDA — A special concert by Gowanda native Joe Wiens was held July 16 at Gowanda’s Historic Hollywood Theater.

Wiens’ performance included a collection of songs featuring well-known covers as well as many originals from his new album, “Sounds of Isolation.”

A Gowanda Central School graduate, Wiens has been based in Chicago, Ill., since 2010. Besides being a singer/songwriter, he has also been active on stage as an actor and has appeared in numerous productions in both the Buffalo and Chicago areas.

Among Wiens’ Buffalo credits are a role in a Shakespeare In The Park presentation of “King Lear” and as Buddy Holly in a Musical fare Theater production of “The Buddy Holly Story,” which won him an Artie Award for Best Actor in a Musical.

While having acted in numerous productions in Chicago, Wiens is currently a member of the Sha ered Globe Theater there.

More than just a concert, the Hollywood Theater presentation was also a reunion on multiple levels. It was a chance for Wiens to reconnect with his Gowanda roots and get back in touch with friends and family in

Gowanda. He made it clear how important Gowanda was in his life.

“Gowanda is very special ... I’m sure you all know that,” Wiens commented at one point in the concert.

“Other places have other things, but this is a great town and I’m proud to be from here.”

Joe Wiens is the son of retired Gowanda teachers David and Anne Wiens,and there were many other former faculty members in the crowd of slightly over 100 that a ended the event. One person commented that it looked a lot like a teachers’ reunion.

Wiens mixed humor and stories of growing up in Gowanda in between songs.

At one point, Wiens called his father up on stage to join in singing “Danny’s Song,” a sentimental selection for the father/son duet. Most were familiar with the opening lines of the Kenny Rogers’ song. “People smile and tell me I’m the lucky one, and we’ve only just begun; think I’m gonna have a son. He will be like she and me, as free as a dove, conceived in love, sun is gonna shine above.”

SPRINGVILLE– The Ducky Derby returns this year as part of the Fiddlefest on July 31 at 6:00 PM in Shu leworth Park.

The Ducky Derby is an annual traditional event sponsored by the Springville Area Chamber of Commerce. It’s fun affordable family fun.

Last year over 450 ducks entered the “virtual” race which was broadcast live on Facebook. This year the Derby will feature the same pre-race show featuring the business sponsors of the race, followed by the quick sprint of the ducks down Spring Brook over rapids, rocks, and riffles. The race will once again be broadcast, but spectators are allowed to follow and cheer

their ducks as they race to the fi nish gate.

Bridging the technological gap Digital Divide Program GOWANDA — Recovery Options Made Easy has received the Digital Divide technical grant program through Spectrum Charter Communications.

The Digital Divide Program is available within Chautauqua and Ca araugus counties. The Digital Divide Program is offered to individuals 50 years of age and older.

Individuals will be able to receive one-on-one technology and broadband access training in their homes.

Program participants will also learn how to securely use broadband technology to access a multitude of community services such as healthcare, counseling, support groups, food delivery, and pharmaceutical delivery options.

Participants have the op-

tion to apply a limited number of broadband devices to assist them in accessing community services digitally.

Priority will be given to individuals who are experience mental health concerns. Recovery Options Made Easy, formerly known as Housing Options Made Easy, is a peer run agency that offers supportive housing and community support services to individuals who struggle with mental health or substance use disorder.

Throughout Western New York and Finger Lake regions, programs and services help individuals move forwarded through goal based, person centered, and trauma informed advocacy.

Seneca to honor indigenous children discovered in mass graves IRVING — Earlier this year, J.C. Seneca decided to put together a health and healing expo at his Tallchief Outdoor Events Center, set on greenspace alongside his Native Pride Travel Plaza.

Seneca’s idea was to help the community find ways to heal in body, mind and spirit by bringing together a collection of traditional and Native care providers to share their practices and wisdom.

“I wanted to sponsor an event that was more than the standard health fair,” he said. “That’s why we invited a variety of care providers in the fields of healthy minds and bodies.

The event would begin with the sacred Native tradition of a talking/healing circle. Seneca’s intent was to help the community discuss and deal with a racist on-air incident earlier this year when a radio show host openly denigrated African American women.

“It’s also why I thought it was important to incorporate a talking/healing circle to address the many forms of racism that exist in our community,” he said.

“To try and provide peace among us.”

What was not part of Seneca’s original plan was expanding that talking/ healing circle to address a series of more disturbing

and deeply discriminatory acts.

“What I didn’t anticipate was the continuing stream of stories out of Canada, along with U.S. Interior Secretary Haaland’s recent announcement of her investigation, all focused on the mass grave remains of Native children being found on the grounds of former Indigenous boarding schools,” he said.

Seneca said it is a disturbing story that rings true for many Native people whose grandparents and parents, aunts and uncles, brothers and sisters, were taken from their families and placed in such government-run institutions, with

the goal to strip them of their identities, cultures, traditions and languages and assimilate them into white society.

Seneca said many Native children were abused mentally, physically, emotionally and spiritually at these militaristic schools. He said over 80% of them were sexually abused.

“The current spotlight on these stories is dredging up painful memories for Native people around the world,” he said. “They are also informing a large number of non-Natives who have been unaware of these schools and the tragedies that occurred there.”

One such school existed for 100 years on the Cattaraugus Territory near Irving. Seneca said many Seneca children endured the hardships and trauma of terrible abuses within the confines of this institution known as the Thomas Indian School.

“Many other native children from the northeast region of the United States were taken from their families and endured tragic lives at this school as well,” he said. “Now we are haunted by the questions of how many of these children never made it back to their families? How many may be buried on the former campus of the Thomas Indian

School?”

With the launch of Secretary Haaland’s investigation, Seneca said they may soon find out.

“That’s why I feel it is important to expand the focus of our talking/healing circle to help all of us try and make sense of these senseless tragedies.”

The Tallchief Health & Healing Expo will take place 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, July 31. The talking/ healing circle will begin at 8 a.m., led by former Seneca President Dennis Bowen from the Allegany Territory. Both events are free and open to the public.

Acclaimed author to visit Cattaraugus Free Library in August CATTARAUGUS — August is shaping up to be abusy month at the Ca araugus Free Library.

Stacy Dermont, co-author of “The Hamptons Kitchen,”will be at the library at 1 p.m. Aug. 9. She grew up on her grandparents’ dairy farm in North O o.

Dermont considered applying to Cornell, but instead opted for a state school and a degree in costume design for theatre. She moved to Long Island for graduate school in 1994 and then to the Hamptons for her husband, Dr. Daniel Koontz, job in 2000.

Dermont is the former editor of “Dan’s Papers,” where she also wrote the food and celebrity columns.

She became friends with Hillary Davis, author of four French cookbooks, in 2016 and it was only natural for them to write a fresh produce-based cookbook.

The comment set the stage for what looks to be a busy fall for the Gowanda theater.

Taylor Smith of Gowanda graduates from RIT

ROCHESTER, NY— Taylor Smith of Gowanda graduated from Rochester Institute of Technology with a BS in chemical engineering.

SPRINGVILLE— Springville-Griffith Institute (SGI) Superintendent Kimberly Moritz has announced her intent to retire this January.

Moritz joined SGI in early 2016 a­er serving as Randolph Central School District’s superintendent for eight years. She previously served as an assistant principal at Frontier and as a high school principal at Randolph and Gowanda.

Moritz’s career began at St. Joseph Elementary School, and she later taught for a decade at Pine Valley. She will depart SGI with more than 20 years of administrative experience and 30 years in education.

“The truth is that it’s simply the right time for me,” said Moritz of her decision to retire. “I’ve had a fulfi lling career in which I’ve been lucky enough to do meaningful work and to form relationships with some incredible people.

In a message to staff, SGI School Board President Allison Duwe spoke highly of Superintendent Moritz’s positive influence in the District. “(Kimberly is) someone willing to put in the hard work, someone willing to listen, someone open to having her mind changed about things, someone with the capacity to understand and reflect on Springville’s uniquenesses and complexities,” said Duwe.

Moritz said the announcement was made well in advance to provide the District the time needed to choose the next superintendent. The Board of Education has selected Dr. David O’Rourke, Erie 2-Chautauqua-Ca araugus BOCES District Superintendent, to assist in the search. The process will involve community participation and student engagement.

As the search is conducted over the next six months, Moritz and Duwe noted

there is still important work that needs to be done during this time.

“I’m so proud to be the Springville superintendent and will continue to do so with all that I’ve got until January 8, 2022,” said Moritz. “We’ve got much to do, including rolling out the next capital project.”

While the Board of Education is looking toward the future, Duwe acknowledged Moritz’s many achievements during her five years at SGI. “I couldn’t be prouder of the work that we’ve accomplished with Kimberly as our Superintendent,” said Duwe.

“She’s guided us through tragedy and triumph. The SGI that hired Kimberly is so much be er today and what is exciting in this moment is that so much is possible for this District.”

Moritz reflected on the relationships built that have allowed the District to thrive during her tenure.

“Springville is a wonderful district. A Local Landmark- 75 Years as Sheret Jewelers SPRINGVILLE— Discharged from World War II, Donald Sheret came home to the quaint village of Springville, NY in January of 1946 to be with his wife, Jean Weir.

Before his stationing in the Philippines, Donald had moved to Springville in or-

der to help his brother’s jewelry business. During the duration of Donald’s service his brother Andrew sold his business leaving Donald to fend for his own. As a former farmer, jewelry benchman, and military man Donald wasn’t a stranger to hard work. The watchmaker didn’t let much time pass before unveiling a business of his own.

In the heat of July in the heart of Springville, with $300 invested Donald hosted the grand opening of his own jewelry business on Main Street. He called the storefront, Sherets Jewelers.

Donald would go forth to set up his jewelry store several more times due to relocations. In fact, Sheret Jew-

and it was in the early 1980’s when Sheret Jewelers moved to its current positioning in the downtown district of Springville. No ma er the location, Sheret Jewelers would prove to be a landmark of its own for Springville.

Locations weren’t the only transitions the business experienced. Donald passed his jewelry legacy onto his son Andy Sheret in 1978. Andy went on to share the jewelry passion with the next generation of their family.

His niece, Sheret Jagord traveled every summer from Indiana to help out at the shop. “Rule of thumb (in our family) was if you are old enough to see over the counter, you were put to work,

wedding bands. Any special event that was going on in town that he needed help with, I was here.”

Jagord wasn’t the only one, Andy’s daughter Elise Rose and her husband Mike took over ownership a er Andy’s passing in 2013. Today, the business is third generation owned by Sheret Jagord,and operated by its fourth generation of family jewelers, Jagord’s son and store manager Hunter Hawk.“I don’t think that’s what my grandfather anticipated when he started the store..” Jagord explained to the Springville Times shortly a er opening in February of 2020.

Nonetheless, Jagord’s history coupled with Hunter’s experience training with both Andy Sheret

Springville community!

The Sheret family contributes its success to the ties it has built from within the community. Jagord explains, “It is amazing how many people come in and tell us stories of ge ing their engagement rings or wedding bands from my grandfather or uncle. They are both gone now, and it is amazing to hear all the stories and the impact these moments had!”

Over the years, Sheret Jewelers has teamed up with organizations and events to support the community as it can, and in 2020 the community showed up for Sheret Jewelers.

Looking towards the future, Jagord’s efforts are to honor that same community support by continuing to

provide the intimate service that always prioritizes the customer. She knows that with Hunter’s experience and ongoing studies they will be able to offer custom-designed jewelry to every customer.

For now, Hunter enjoys assisting customers in choosing their custom jewelry and special stones before ordering them. In speaking with Hunter one of the main points that stands out is his overwhelming desire to help people with their decisions.

Over seven and a half decades has gone by since Donald Sheret first opened his doors, and Jagord aims to stay for another 75 years by carrying on the commitment to customer care.
