Ten Things to Do Before the Snow Flies

Upcoming Events November 21-22 Winter Arts Festival Holiday Valley

By Alicia Dziak

Hard to believe, but the holidays are fast approaching. Before you head into the season of wrapping, baking, mailing, festive fun and nonstop activity, take some time to get a few other things crossed off your to-do list. Get Ready to Hit the Slopes There’s lots to do before you head out onto the slopes. Find that hat you threw into the closet at the end of the season last year. If you have kids, have them try on last year’s gear. Do their boots still fit? Do they still have two of those gloves? Make a list and head to the shops in EVL to get great deals on the coolest of everything so you’re ready when the slopes are. On that note, now’s the time to get your ski passes. Choose from a variety of packages and pass options at Holiday Valley. If you’re a college student, the all-new College Season Pass can be purchased for only $299, but only through Dec. 31. HV is scheduled to open later this month, so why wait to purchase your passes when you can start using them as soon as the resort opens? And don’t forget that HoliMont, while open to members only on weekends, is open to the public Monday through Friday (except for Christmas week). If you’re planning a getaway for skiing or riding, book your lodging now for the best selection. EVL has loads of hotels, houses, condos and B&Bs, to suit every need. Beat the Pre-Holiday Shopping Rush As soon as Thanksgiving hits, it’s full speed ahead prepping for Christmas. Why not get a jump on your

Village Board Wrestles with Vehicle Needs, Trash Issues By Jann Wiswall

As the Village board meeting got started on Monday, Nov. 9, resident Jack Rogan asked about test results from water samples taken several months ago by the Department of Public Works. The samples were taken to try to determine why, after years

of effort and replacement of pipes and mains leading to and inside his home, Rogan’s water filters still quickly turn brown and need bi-weekly or monthly changing. Department of Public Works chief Harold Morton said the water test found only very low levels of iron, indicating the

water is safe. He also explained that he had talked with some experts and was told that water filters typically do turn brown and that Rogan may no longer need to change them so frequently. A copy of the results was given to Rogan, which he said he would review. See Village Board page 7

NY State of Health Open Enrollment thru Jan. 31 By Jann Wiswall

It’s open enrollment season at NY State of Health, so if you don’t have health insurance through a job, Medicare, Medicaid, the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP) or another source that provides qualifying coverage, the NY State of Health

program can help you get covered. According to its web site, what you pay for insurance depends on your expected income in 2016. Based on the income estimate you put on your application, the health marketplace can tell you if you qualify for a private health

insurance plan or if you qualify for Medicaid or the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP). Keep in mind that even if you don’t qualify for Medicaid, your children may qualify for CHIP. So be sure to look at all your options. The plans available through See Health Enrollment page 7
