FEATURE STORY “The Hedges” historic Koontz Mansion delights during the holidays "Many people just drive by and view our lights, but when a neighbor recently asked if she could come in and take a closer look, I told her ‘Absolutely, but only if you come in and view it all as a little kid.’ I think that’s the magic of the mansion--if you come in, you become a child again, too!” –Tony Matics

FROM THE EDITOR

Happy New Year If you haven’t done so already, now is a good time to think about 2024 and what kind of role you want to play. Don’t think about resolutions which usually are blown by February. Think about where you can make a difference. Maybe you want to commit to be a volunteer for your child’s sports team, be a member of the Elk River Walking Club, join the Elk River Museum group that meets every Thursday, help with hometown projects, or even start your own business. We all have talents that can be so beneficial to our local schools and to our community. We need your expertise so get involved and help the River grow in 2024. This month’s feature article highlights the Matics family and how their holiday decorating skills are an asset to locals and visitors to Clendenin. If you haven’t seen their magnificent Halloween and Christmas decorations, make plans to drive down Koontz Avenue and see the Koontz Mansion in all of its glory. Their Christmas decorations are up until mid-January, so there is still time. Also, mark your calendars and check out their Fourth of July and Halloween decorations. Speaking of talents, this month ERL also features Lauren Campbell (daughter of Dee and Anna Campbell) who has really captured attention in California with her marketing skills. She planned an event for the City of West Hollywood, capturing the mayor's and city council's attention. As a result, they received an official proclamation from the City of West Hollywood commending the festival's dedication to promoting cultural harmony through music - and November 4th was officially named "Rock & Roamer: Live on Sunset Day" in the city. The River is so proud of Lauren--way to go, hometown girl! Each of our own skill sets is different. My writing skills inspired us to publish Elk River Living (don’t ask me about advanced math though--I would fail there for sure). The bottom line is it doesn’t matter what you do, but take the time to do something you enjoy, big or small. You never know the ripple effect it will have on others. Sharing your skills is rewarding and it gives you a sense of purpose. We are so thankful for our Elk River Living audience and your wonderful comments about our magazine. We look forward to another year of sharing life on the Elk with everyone, far and near. Remember, to thine own self be true! Until next month,

Remember, there’s no place like home...on the Elk River. cyndi@elkriverliving.com

ELK’S COOKBOOK ARE YOU READY FOR A SKINNY SALAD AFTER THE HOLIDAYS?

B

y the time everyone survives the holiday season, January sparks the interest for low calorie recipes. Gabi Strickland Walker (of Walker Mt. Eats) and her daughters love Caesar Salad. Gabi saw this recipe for Skinny Caesar Salad on Facebook Reel and said it is so simple and checked all the boxes for her family. “The toasted panko crumbs may be a new favorite for all of our salads.” she said; the flavor it adds and the crunch is great and it’s so much better than chomping down on hard croutons! The dressing is somewhere between that at Outback and Texas Roadhouse-garlicky, creamy, and a hint of spicy!”

ELK RIVER GIRL THROWS LOS ANGELES MUSIC FESTIVAL & RECEIVES OFFICIAL PROCLAMATION FROM THE CITY OF WEST HOLLYWOOD Article & photos by Lauren Campbell Elk River native & ERL guest author

JAN 2024

O 16

ne of the most beautiful things I have ever experienced in this world is sharing my dreams and having others believe in them. And whether I am under the stars of the Elk River or in the "City of Stars," I have been incredibly blessed to experience this beautiful thing. Growing up on the Elk River, I was fortunate to be exposed to so much live music. I remember my grandfather taking me to the Elk River Community Center on Friday nights, where he would sit in with the band on harmonica, my parents taking me to see the

Emmalee Rainbow

West Virginia Symphony Orchestra at the Clay Center, seeing bands playing in downtown Clendenin, and going to Mountain Stage. When I was in middle school, my mom would help me secure photo passes to photograph the bands who came through the Charleston Coliseum, where she worked as a marketing director. And my dad, who marched in the Pride of West Virginia and worked at Rock 105 early in his career, would quiz me on the artists and songs that would come on the radio. Surrounded by music, it shouldn't have surprised anyone I wanted to

pursue a career in the music industry. To jumpstart this career, I applied to the University of Southern California's Master of Music Industry program and was accepted to join a cohort of 24 students chasing that same dream. During my time in the program, there is so much that I’ve accomplished and am proud of. I’ve gotten to work with some of my favorite artists as an Emerging Talent Associate for Warner Music Group's Rhino label, attend the GRAMMY Awards, finish a season working at the Hollywood Bowl, and have gotten to photograph artists on some of the biggest stages. But one of the highlights from my program grew from a project I started in my bedroom on Elk River Road.

Katrina Weissman

When COVID brought me home from my undergrad studies at the University of Kentucky, I started the music magazine Rock & Roamer. It quickly gained traction, attracting readers from around the country who shared a passion for diverse musical experiences. It became a hub for up-and-coming artists, featuring interviews, album reviews, and event highlights. What began as a pandemic project evolved into a community-driven platform celebrating the unifying power of music. Lauren Campbell

the city. Months of meticulous planning culminated in an event that transcended my wildest expectations. On Friday, November 3rd, four incredible artists played "Rock & Roamer: Live on Sunset" at Hotel Ziggy on the Sunset Strip in West Hollywood. The next day, the proclamation was presented, and we held "Rock & Roamer: Live on Sunset (Sunrise)."

The journey from concept to reality was marked by challenges and triumphs. Securing the venue, coordinating logistics, and navigating the legal realm of this event tested the knowledge learned in my classes. But the support that poured in from my group members, artists, and business partners fueled my determination to make this event a reality.

The proclamation wasn't just a recognition of the festival; it was a testament to the power of dreams and the unwavering support of a community. It symbolized the belief that grassroots efforts, fueled by passion and a shared love for music, could create ripples. And something that started in Elkview could make waves in Los Angeles.

The festival's success resonated beyond the confines of Rock & Roamer and the University of Southern California. The event's impact on fostering community spirit reached the City of West Hollywood, capturing the mayor's and city council's attention. We received an official proclamation from the City of West Hollywood commending the festival's dedication to promoting cultural harmony through music - and November 4th was officially named "Rock & Roamer: Live on Sunset Day" in

As I stood on stage opening night to welcome our audience to the event, basking in the glow of all the hard work to get there, I couldn't help but feel immensely grateful. Grateful for the unwavering support of my classmates, the artists and bands that played, Hotel Ziggy, the vibrant energy of the audience, and my mom, who flew from West Virginia to attend the festival. Most importantly, I was grateful for the music—the universal language that brought us together and made this dream a reality.

ELKRIVERLIVING.COM

Mora Michelle

When an opportunity arose in my master's program to put on a show, I realized the potential to create something beyond the magazine realm for Rock & Roamer. I envisioned a live event for the magazine that encapsulated the spirit of music's ability to connect people. The idea took root with a group of some of my fellow cohort members. With unwavering determination, we began planning a music festival.

“ THE HEDGES” HISTORIC KOONTZ MANSION

JAN 2024

DELIGHTS DURING THE HOLIDAYS

22

Photography by Jill Moles Mullins

W

Tony Matics and his wife, Anne Raiguel Matics, are the newest owners of The Hedges, the historic 11-room mansion in Clendenin with a second-floor sunroom built over a large portico. It is 4523 sq. ft. with 5 bedrooms and 2.5 bathrooms situated on a 1.3 acre river lot. It is believed the estate was named The Hedges because of the thick pine hedge that still surrounds the grounds to this day. The Matics family loves celebrating the holidays with their community, and their magnificent decorations are a perfect catalyst to invite friends and family to the mansion.

ELKRIVERLIVING.COM

hen you purchase an historical building that is listed in the National Register of Historical Places, federal rules and regulations govern any changes that can be made to it other than maintenance. One thing that goes without saying, however, is that all of the owners share a common bond to carry on its legacy and celebrate its historical roots within the community. Built in 1905-06, it is described in the National Register of Historic Places as “Regarded as the finest residence in Clendenin at the time of construction, the house is a 2-½ story Foursquare brick with heavy Craftsman elements. Two outbuildings, a garage and a carriage house, are contributing elements on the property.”

23

The first of November the Matics start taking down all of their Halloween decorations to make room for their Christmas holiday extravaganza. Tony said, “It all started in 2015 when I bought Anne a sleigh. We added a couple of animated Santas and, since then, it has grown steadily every year.”

JAN 2024

Tony explained, “The Flood of 2016 actually triggered us to expand our decorations. The Town closed Koontz Avenue that Halloween after the flood so that the children could safely trick or treat with some normalcy. The community was still a mess and recovering from the flood. We enjoyed it so much that we started our own tradition of sharing the mansion each holiday.”

24

Halloween is a big event for the Matics, complete with animated dragons, goblins and ghouls. Their decorations extend to the carriage house and the barn which are also located on the property. Family and friends dress in costume and greet the grade school children as they parade down Koontz Avenue each year. “One year we were superheroes,” said Tony; “Our son, Andy, was Captain America, Anne was Wonder Woman and I was Batman. Another year we were the Adams Family. This year we were the characters from the Wizard of Oz. Our friends, Terry and Lisa Shamblin, were the Tin Man and the Cowardly Lion; Jeff Huffman was the Flying Monkey and his wife Kathy was a voodoo priestess; Anne was the Wicked Witch; Angie Shamblin was Dorothy complete with ruby red slippers, and Andy was the Winky Guard. We had everyone except the Good Witch because it was so cold in October, no one wanted to stand out front in a taffeta gown and wave to the crowd.”

This year the mansion porch and yard were adorned with reindeer, a Texan Santa in a cowboy hat and boots, Max the Dog, a big and little Grinch, several 6-ft. trees, a 12-ft. tree, a shelf tree, a choo-choo train and a conductor, and a fire-breathing winter dragon. Oh, and don’t forget about the Bahama Santa surrounded by palm trees on the barn porch. There was also an incandescent snowman and a Santa Claus climbing up a ladder to the upstairs sunroom and other animated displays including 4-5 snowmen, a Santa in a snowball fight, skiing penguins, and more! Tony said they have had a lot of fun with the animated decorations on their front porch. “One time a FedEx driver came up on the porch to leave a package and one of the sensor-controlled Santas moved and asked her if she had been a good boy or girl this year. She leaped in the air, ran out into the yard, and finally looked back!” He also explained the wind can have an adverse effect on their decorations. “One year we had a wind storm during the night and our dancing Santa flew off the porch like superman and crashed into the maple tree, consequently decapitating the Santa. Much to our despair, Anne and I both were at work and the Bridge-Clendenin grade school children were scheduled for a tour that next morning and discovered the reindeer strewn all through the hedges and Santa’s head in the yard.” This year for the Bridge-Clendenin Elementary parade, live characters at the mansion were dressed as Christmas elves. Tony and Anne portrayed Mr. and Mrs. Santa Claus,

and friends dressed as Gingerbread men and elves. The lights were on every evening for the community to come by and enjoy their winter wonderland. Tony remembers when he and his son, Andrew, first walked in the barn located on the Koontz property. The Robertson family had graciously let the Herbert Hoover High School classes all build homecoming floats in the Koontz barn.

"

I never thought much about it because Anne but when I looked at the wall, I saw all the signatures where the students had painted their nicknames while they worked on the floats. There, side by side, was Anne (Rag) and Tony (Ott) and I looked at my son and said, ‘I think this is a sign and decided right then and there to buy the house. - Tony Matics

The Matics family moved into the mansion in October of 2015. At the time, the Matics had two houses which they had to consolidate into one, but since they had an 11room mansion to fill, space was not an issue. Sadly, The Flood of 2016 destroyed everything they had stored, including family memorabilia, in their basement and barn. “Amish workers, Carbide volunteers, friends and family all came and helped us clean and rid the basement of flood debris, but we totally lost the downstairs second kitchen. When Tony grew up in Clendenin, the Koontz mansion was occupied by Dr. Jack Robertson, a local dentist, and his family. The home has been the most prominent house in Clendenin since Luther Koontz, a prominent banker and the first mayor of the town, built the Craftsman and Colonial-style house in the late 1800s. The Koontz family lived in the house for 60 years until it was purchased by Dr. Robertson in the mid-1960’s. Dr. Robertson’s wife, Evelyn, completely redecorated the house in the late 1960’s. When Dr. Robertson retired in the early 2000s, L. Forrest Akers, Jr. purchased the home and lived there for 12 years. Forrest meticulously maintained the grounds, updated and refurbished the house, and hosted fundraising mansion tours for the Clendenin Woman's Club. He sold

the mansion to the Matics in 2015 due to health issues which limited him from taking care of the house and grounds. The Matics have also expanded their decorations for other holidays as well. For the Fourth of July they now decorate their Santas as Uncle Sam and Ben Franklin, and even Mrs. Claus as Betsy Ross. Tony added, “We like doing something for Easter also, but other than the Easter Bunny and some chicks and eggs, the decorations are more limited.” The Bridge-Clendenin Elementary students parade up Maywood Avenue and back down Koontz Avenue by the mansion for both Halloween and Christmas. Also, the children from the Advent and the Methodist churches come by during the holidays along with many town locals and visitors. Tony and Anne welcome people to stop and walk up in the yard to see the decorations. Tony said, “Many people just drive by and view our lights, but when a neighbor recently asked if she could come in and take a closer look, I told her ‘Absolutely, but only if you come in and view it all as a little kid.’ I think that’s the magic of the mansion--if you come in, you become a child again, too!” The Hedges is located at 301 Koontz Avenue. If you haven’t driven by or visited during the holidays, add it to your bucket list for next year and also take time to visit the charming Main Street in Clendenin with its 1890s Victorian commercial buildings. Many of Clendenin's major downtown buildings are constructed of brick and feature heavy cornices, brick corbeling, and vernacular "builders" facades. You may be surprised to learn that most of the entire downtown area is on the Register of Historical Places!! The town and the mansion are a step back in history and reflect the development of this small town in West Virginia.

THE

ELK’S JOURNAL ELLIE COMES TO TOWN

Ellen Mills

If you are looking for a charming children’s book with beautiful illustrations, ERL recommends Ellie Comes to Town! It is written by West Virginia author Sharlene Wiseman of Liberty and illustrated by Ellen Mills Pauley.

Introducing Ellie

Sharlene Wiseman

In the small town of Eleanor, WV last October, a turkey came into town and visited for days. It showed up at the local library, shops and restaurants, and even at a wedding and a soccer game. It appears that,

out of nowhere, the turkey simply showed up. The town even has photographs of the turkey with police on the street blocking traffic for it and the mayor of Eleanor gave the turkey the official nickname, Ellie. Sharlene Wiseman, a retired kindergarten aide, decided to write a children’s book about Ellie and her visit to their town. Ellie Comes to Town gives readers a tour of the town of Eleanor and it is accompanied with lovely illustrations by Ellen Mills Pauley, making it a ‘must have’ for children everywhere. Sharlene and Ellen have been at several locations for Meet and Greet events for readings and book signings and were at the West Virginia Writer’s Table at the West

Virginia Book Festival at The Charleston Coliseum and Convention center. You can find Ellie Comes to Town at Taylor Books in Charleston and you can purchase copies by emailing sharlenewiseman60@gmail.com to make arrangements for payment and delivery. Also, their book was picked up by the Tamarack Marketplace System which means you can now obtain a copy of the book at the Tamarack Center in Beckley or at the Cultural Center located on the Capitol grounds in Charleston. Sharlene said, “We are honored to represent our community alongside all of the many great artisans of this state.”

Excerpt from Ellie Comes to Town Nestled in the mountains of West Virginia, there is a small town. It is not just any town, but the cleanest town in West Virginia. It is called Eleanor. The people who live there are proud of their small town. So, that is why it should come as no surprise that on a chilly day in October the town had a special visitor.

JAN 2024

It appears that out of nowhere a turkey showed up in town to strut around and let people know that she had come to visit. After a few days, the mayor gave her the name of Eleanor -- Ellie for short.

28

As Ellie made her way through town, she made new friends with the townspeople. She loved visiting the Red House. That is where Mayor Clendenin works. Kim, the town clerk, and the other workers there enjoyed seeing her too, and looked forward to her daily visits.

PINCH VOLUNTEER FIRE DEPARTMENT The Pinch Volunteer Fire Department received a very generous donation from one of our citizens in our Elk River community. The PVFD would like to thank Tommy Clay for the donation of a utility vehicle and his continued support of the department. The department was exploring options to see if they could replace one of their aging utility vehicles over the next several years. Due to funding issues, the department

didn't believe they could afford a replacement. These vehicles help save wear and tear on their larger, more expensive apparatus, responding to medical calls and service calls that do not warrant a large vehicle. The donation of this vehicle will help the PVFD better serve the citizens of their fire district. If you see Tommy, be sure to tell how much the community appreciates his generosity!

ELK REFLECTS JIM HAYES, CLASS OF 1965, RETURNS FOR FIRST HHHS BASKETBALL GAME IN THE NEW GYMNASIUM

The Elk River welcomed Hoover basketball legend Jim Hayes from the HHHS Class of 1965 as they kicked off their first game in the new Herbert Hoover gymnasium! Jim held the scoring record in basketball at Hoover from 1963 to 2020. FYI: there were no 3-point shots during that time, and he only played at Hoover his 11th and 12th grade years which makes this record even more memorable. Jim led the Kanawha Valley Conference in scoring and averaged about 28 points per game for Hoover.

He had his choice of several big colleges to attend (WVU, Virginia Tech, and North Carolina State) but Jim chose to play at Morris Harvey College (now University of Charleston) where he felt he could obtain a good education without the pressure of big school basketball. Jim was inducted into the Morris Harvey College Basketball of Fame. It was truly an honor to have him at the first boys basketball game at the new school, sharing memories from when he attended the first newly built HHHS near Clendenin. While it is a time for new beginnings, the Elk River community always remembers those who paved the way!

W

TRADITIONAL WINTERTIME PRESERVATION

intertime is the traditional time for butchering which is a tradition we continue at our house. We freeze, can, salt down and smoke our pork.

By Laura Boggess Shafer

CANNED PORK OR BEEF –

Cut pork or beef into chunks

Wash and dry jars completely (We dry in oven on low - water will cause meat to spoil)

Pack pork into jars once cooled

Do NOT add water

Add 1 tsp salt

Clean rims of jars

Add lids and rings

Process 3 hours in a water bath or 75 minutes for pints;

90 minutes for quarts at 10 pounds pressure Note: Canned pork makes delicious BBQ’s. Also, beef can be canned this same way also.

Sausage is cut from the shoulder mostly, but after the prime cuts are made, there are trimmings left that will also be ground into sausage. A lot of older people mix and add their own seasonings such as salt, black pepper, sugar, and onion powder, according to their personal preference. For a spicier flavor they may add cayenne pepper or for a sweeter sausage, they may add brown sugar, fennel, nutmeg, and sage. Many companies now offer sausage seasonings already prepared for regular, hot, spicy, Italian, sweet Italian, and many others flavors. We use Legg’s regular seasoning and add extra sage. Frank cans sausage the way his family has for generations.

CANNED SAUSAGE –

Wash jars & dry completely

Make sausage into patties to fit jars

Fry patties until completely done (NOTE: Some people prefer to pan-fry the sausage in the oven until lightly browned and then put in jars)

Put into jars

Add 3/4 to 1 inch of grease

Clean rims of jars

Add lids & rings

Turn jars upside down on a towel

Grease seals the jar

Process pint jars for 75 minutes; quarts for 90 minutes at 10 pounds pressure. (The canning times come from

JAN 2024

my old Kerr canning books and from experience.)

LARD –

We grind the fat to make it quicker & easier to render

Put in large iron kettle outside over an open fire

As the fat melts, the cracklins (aka the solid material

FLAKY PIE CRUST –

4 cups flour

1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder

1 teaspoon salt

1 1/2 cup lard –

1 egg, beaten

1 1/2 Tablespoons vinegar

1/2 cup water – Add to the flour mixture. Mix gently ‘til it holds

which is left from rendering) come to the top and when they turn brown, the lard is ready. This normally takes 2-3 hours. Using a metal ladle and a metal colander, we strain the lard into completely dry and warm jars. –

Clean rims, add rings and lids. As the lard cools the jar

seals and it turns white. Lard is used just as any other grease, such as Crisco. Lard can also be used in making soap. The great-grandparents never asked how much meat you got. They always wanted to know how much lard you got because it had to do them all year to cook with and to make pie crusts and breads.

Mix together with fork or hands till crumbly

together. Roll out to your desired thickness. Makes 6 crusts or 3 double crust pies. Pie hints: –

A pie crust will be more easily made and better if all ingredients are cool.

To prevent a cream pie crust from becoming soggy, sprinkle with powdered sugar

Cut drinking straws into short lengths and insert through slits in pie crust to prevent juices from running over in the oven and permit steam to escape.

ELKRIVERLIVING.COM

The fat trimmed from the meat can be rendered into lard. Grandma’s pie crusts were always so flaky because she used lard to make them. Lard is all natural and is a versatile fat. It doesn’t smoke on high heat. Our family uses it in our deep fryer for homemade French fries.

Of course, it's harder to motivate yourself to get outside for a run or bike ride when the temperature drops, and the shorter days compress our schedules, but there are changes in your body that affect your ability to exercise, too. For many people with arthritis or other joint problems, cold weather brings more complaints of pain. To stay warm, our bodies narrow blood vessels to reduce blood flow to the skin, and more superficial muscles. That means that there is an increased risk of muscle strains in the cold. There is also an increased strain on the heart because of the narrowed blood vessels. This isn't to say that you shouldn't be active outdoors in the cold; it just means you may have to make a few changes to your routine. Here are a few tips to consider.

JAN 2024

WARM UP RIGHT

46

A good warm up is always important. However, because of the tendency for joints to be stiffer and blood flow to muscles to be reduced in the cold, it's even more important that you do it right this time of year. To start, do something to get your heart rate up a bit, maybe a brisk walk or light jog. Follow that up with a dynamic warm up rather than static stretches. This could include walking or jogging while pulling your knees up high to your chest. Maybe some high kicks in front of you with straight knees

Dressing in layers allows you to adjust your insulation to your activity level. After you warm up, you might want to take off a layer to avoid getting too hot during your main activity. You'll have it there later to put back on when your activity level drops and you start getting too cold. Don't forget about the sun either. Sunscreen and sunglasses aren't just for the summer. Just because it’s cold doesn't mean the UV rays are gone. A lip balm with SPF can protect you not only from the sun but from the wind, too.

STAY HYDRATED Drink water before, during, and after your workout. The temperature may be down, but you'll still sweat and you'll still lose water vapor in your breath. The drier air in winter lets your sweat evaporate more quickly, so it's easy to underestimate how much fluid you've lost.

COOL DOWN When you're done, don't rush to get inside and crawl under a blanket. Cool down properly. Keep moving with a walk or another form of active recovery to let your heart rate come down. After exercise is the right place for static stretching. You can also head inside for some foam rolling or self massage. So good news! The days being shorter and the temperature being lower doesn't mean you're stuck inside for all of your exercise. If you follow these tips, you can safely keep moving outdoors.
