HELLO & Welcome Back! FROM THE EDITOR Remember, there’s

Speaking of new businesses, this month we also feature Advantage Valley’s Faster WV entrepreneurship program, a regional marketing and strategic initiative that addresses what you need to take your good idea for a business and grow it into a successful business. Take a moment to read about entrepreneurs such as Matt and Nikki Holbert, Jess Brown, and a wide variety of clients across the region who have worked with Advantage Valley’s coaches. Start with a step in the right direction with Advantage Valley and then just keep stepping! September evenings are full of Elk River sporting events. See our Elk’s Students for the complete 2022 fall line up! It’s a great way to cheer on our kids, grab a chili dog or some nachos, and visit with friends. Embrace ‘today’ and enjoy! no place like home...on the Elk River. 304.546.9243

Welcome to September 2022…better than September 2021 when we were crawling out of COVID face-mask protocol and finally able to eat out at a restaurant and have our kids enjoy going back to school in some sort of normalcy. Better than 2020 when our lives were upside down and the world watched in horror, paralyzed with COVID fear. So this September I am indeed thankful for where we are today. We on the Elk River are no strangers to being thankful for ‘today.’ Many of us have faced devastation and have stood shoulder-to-shoulder with our neighbors, building a fort of strength to carry on and face another day. Our feature story this month celebrates this profound strength with the Town of Clendenin as they held a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the opening of the new Dr. O. M. Harper Stage at the end of Main Street. It is a perfect spot to have an informal lunch/dinner or to peacefully gaze out at the Elk River, but it also serves as a magnet to attract new events to the Town. New events equal new business and new business equals economic growth.

What exactly is Advantage Valley? It’s West Virginia’s Charleston to Huntington Metro Region, comprised of Boone, Cabell, Clay, Jackson, Kanawha, Lincoln, Mason, Putnam, and Wayne Counties. It’s also a non-profit economic development marketing organization, of the same name, that works with the State of West Virginia, local governments, county economic development authorities, sector and business leaders, chambers of commerce, academic and training institutions, and nonprofit partners to showcase a nine-county region and strengthen its economy.

GROWING THE ECONOMY, ONE BUSINESS AT A TIME!

Advantage Valley Inc.’s primary work focuses on business attraction, business retention, and entrepreneurial development. In collaboration with our many partners, we offer Technical Assistance, Supply Chain Expos, Economic Gardening, Sales Training, and an entrepreneurship program called FASTER WV.

Submitted by Guest Author Marjorie Cooke, Director of Marketing & Communications at Advantage Valley*

16SEPT2022

Advantage Valley’s Entrepreneurship Program FASTER WV of over 600,000 people, representing 25% of the state’s population, with $25 billion in Gross Domestic Product annually. These counties in West Virginia form one of the nation’s most resourcerich and business-friendly corridors.

Advantage Valley is fertile soil for growth-minded entrepreneurs Advantage Valley has always been a great place to start or grow a small business, and its team provides a wealth of resources to small business owners and entrepreneurs alike. The FASTER WV (acronym stands for Fostering Advantages for Start Ups & Entrepreneurial Resurgence in WV) Initiative identifies, encourages, and supports businesses through information-packed workshops, business coaching, business courses, and capital. The FASTER WV Program is designed to help both small businesses start-up or existing businesses improve or grow.

The Advantage Valley Region is home to a population

In 2018, Advantage Valley, Inc. leveraged U.S. EDA and Claude Worthington Benedum Foundation funding to convene key WV entrepreneurial leaders to develop and deploy the “Best Market Opportunities for Business Development” report for the region. This report anda series of practical playbooks show 20 key business sectors that are ripe for entrepreneurial business and jobs development. Advantage Valley built on that work to boost startups and expansions with the development of the FASTER WV entrepreneurship program. Target sectors include Food & Beverage Production; River & Outdoor Recreation/Tourism; Dependent Care; Healthcare; Small Manufacturing; and Construction. These sectors have proven regional high growth potential and high wage prospects.

FASTER WV established the only dedicated revolving loan fund in the region, managed by the Wyoming County Economic Development Authority. This fund has the capacity to fund many more budding entrepreneurs, beyond those that it has funded already with $181,000 in loans.

Advantage Valley’s FASTER WV Program has been in operation now for over two and a half years, with a delayed start due to the COVID pandemic. Collaborating with the WV Small Business Development Center and Unlimited Future, Inc., our team coordinated service providers across the region for entrepreneurs to better take advantage of key services, assistance, best practices, and opportunities. The FASTER WV program matches clients with one of our professional business coaches, Tyler Brandstetter (for Boone, Clay, Kanawha, Putnam and Lincoln Counties) and Jules Bills (Cabell and Wayne Counties). They provide one-on-one business coaching and business plan writing assistance, offer online entrepreneurship training class options, and provide access to capital.

Some Success Stories

18SEPT2022

Beyond the numbers are the wonderful stories of entrepreneurial success, like that of Matt and Nikki Holbert. The Clendenin Brewing story is familiar to many in the Elk River region. But were you aware that the region’s favorite startup couple credits the FASTER WV program with some of their early success with business coaching and a $50,000 FASTER WV loan to help purchase brewing equipment? The Holberts recognized the importance of investing in businesses that benefit their community. They saw the importance, and opportunity, of Clendenin as a trail town for the developing Elk River Trail. FASTER WV hopes to inspire other river and outdoor recreation/ tourism businesses to start up all along the Elk River and Rail Trails. FASTER WV has plans to offer entrepreneurship workshops and assistance throughout the Elk River region and beyond. Have a community group that might benefit? Invite us to make a presentation!

Eric Grandon is a Disabled Combat Veteran and a beekeeper in Clay County. He and his wife Mary are first generation farmers and run Sugar Bottom Farm, LLC., a beekeeping and honey production business. They received a $50,000 FASTER WV loan to build and equip a new honey processing, packaging and storage facility, add 75 more bee colonies, buy a new ATV to help facilitate honey harvesting, and provide employment for 5 additional employees. Eric is effusive in his praise of the coaches, classes and capital. “I can’t thank you enough for all your help”, says Eric. “The FASTER WV program has been the best thing we’ve ever participated in. It’s a literal one stop shop for small business. Please know that the system you have in place really works.”

Advantage Valley played a supporting role in the development of the new statewide entrepreneurship ecosystem encompassing over 100 resource professionals statewide, a robust WV Business Link online portal with resources available to entrepreneurs across the Mountain State, and a first statewide entrepreneurship conference in the books. Advantage Valley and FASTER WV are proud to be a part of this growing and thriving entrepreneurship ecosystem, with complimentary and coordinated efforts to improve the entrepreneur culture in West Virginia. But progress only happens one business at a time. We hope our program is right for you, or someone you know, to start developing that business plan soon. We hope you are aware of the amazing business opportunities to serve the tourism industry you have right now in the Elk River region. Have a good idea? Want to start a food truck, a coffee shop, a bait and tackle shop, a bike repair shop, a fishing guide business, a livery service? Why don’t you give Tyler Brandstetter, the FASTER WV business coach for this region, a call today and get started! He’s reachable at 304-553-9692 and would love to work with you.

The FASTER WV program assists a wide variety of clients across the eight county region with coaching, classes, and sometimes capital: Mountain Juice, a woman-owned juicery and local vegan food truck in Kanawha County; Elk River Paddle and Yak in Braxton County; We-B-Fryin’ Snacks, a husband and wife snack food business with “make believe pork rinds” in Kanawha County; a young woodworker in Putnam County; a restaurant in Cabell County; Mama Bears Kid Cave in Putnam County; McCallister Campgrounds in Clay County; and the list goes on.

first started his practice in 1931 in Clay, but soon moved to Clendenin. There were no appointments in his day; walk-in’s only and home visits. Many patients remember sitting on the wooden benches in his waiting room, awaiting their turn to see the doctor and his nurse, “Miss Freda”. The Elk River community overwhelmingly would tell you that Dr. Harper treated families, not just patients. His caring heart and medical expertise is well-known on the Elk River. Mayor Summers said, “Through generous donations and scholarships from the Dr. O. M. and Ruth A. Harper Family Foundation, Inc., Dr. Harper and Ruth continue to bless our community.”

Mayor Kay Summers and the Clendenin Town Council proudly held the ribboncutting ceremony on Saturday, August 6, 2022 for the dedication of the Dr. O. M. Harper Stage. The new stage is located at the end of Main Street and will be an event venue for the Town as well as a place where locals and visitors can use the observation window and deck to enjoy the beautiful view of the Elk River. The stage is 26’ x 28’ and offers a large handicap ramp for accessibility and lighting for evening Donationsevents.from the Dr. O. tracking schools. That is only one way I keep myself fit in my advanced years; I am 68. I may be BUD T UGLY, but I can at least keep up with the pack. Not the fastest, but I can at least finish the mission. How does this work? It is an incredibly painless process. It just takes consistency, and about 2 to 3 hours per week. It does not even require a gym membership. Walking a trail, getting plenty of vitamin D from the sun, and the clean fresh air of the forest is a fabulous way to begin. Make it a group appointment, and you now have your own exercise support team. I recently met Kayla James, a fabulous lady. She is a stay-at-home mother of two. She began walking the Elk River Rail Trail in earnest back in March 2022 with her family. She reports not only a 40 lb. weight loss but has inspired others to adopt a healthy lifestyle. She credits an increase in energy, confidence, and overall happiness to simply enjoying walking the trail. What could be better for you? Enjoying family, enjoying feeling good, all in your own backyard. When John Casey has been working for 49 years in law enforcement and security. He was a volunteer kettlebell and fitness coach at the YMCA for years, and was able to experience first hand the benefits of encouraging others to follow his lead.

In addition to constantly training and honing our tracking skills, a good state of general physical fitness will increase our odds of success….the fitter we are…. the more successful we will be. Think about the uphill trudge…the downhill slide….we need good physical strength to do these basic things. Do not even mention wrestling that Grizzly……only my fellow trail master Mike McMahan can do that. After all the rest of us are mere mortals. Some of you know about me. You see my Kettlebells piled up in front of my campsite at

A formula to live by!

30SEPT2022

By: John P. Casey, Chief of Ranger Operations, Allegheny Highlands Group Master Tracking Instructor, Mountain Tracker’s Association Fitness Enthusiast

Wilderness, fresh air, mountains, forests……if it is not in our blood, then we have no business tracking. The fact is we were born to it. We crave it. We eat it for breakfast, lunch, dinner, and the midnight snack. That is why we follow the path we do. How many of us are up to the challenge? When we are called to search, and hopefully rescue…can we successfully get there and get out….Without becoming part of the problem.

MOVEMENT GOOD----SITTING BAD!!!!!

31.COMLIVINGRIVERELK

With steady progression you can develop a simple three times a week regimen of say….25 to 50 pushups broken down into sets of ten, 20 to 30 body weight squats, and then 20-30 second holds in a plank position. Begin with 1 round of 5 to 10 reps if you have not done anything for a while, increase these as you feel stronger. Walk outside, when possible, take stairs when you have a choice, and begin picking up and carrying items that are heavier than 10 lbs. If you like to hike trails, carrying a backpack with 15 to 25 pounds is a wonderful way to increase muscular strength. Challenge yourself by increasing the weight as you feel stronger. In about 4 to 8 weeks of doing this, and after increasing the weight gradually, you will certainly notice a difference in many things. You are walking better, sleeping better, feeling stronger, having greater endurance, able to get up off the toilet in the middle of the night, etc. etc. Who knows, it might even grow hair…….nope, tried it already, does not work…. And for those who may have diabetes or are in a pre-diabetic stage….my father did, and it really cost him….engaging in consistent physical exercise and proper diet can reduce your blood sugar levels to nearly normal. And in a lot of cases with Type 2 diabetes, it can even help reverse the disease. How great would that be? No insulin shots or meds. That now leads to diet. How do we eat? Well, I like a plate of biscuits, sausage, gravy, and potatoes like everyone else. I just do not eat them every day. DO NOT; I repeat DO NOT go on some sort of fad diet plan that involves a lot of low fat whole grain nonsense. Just start eating more lean protein and plenty of colored vegetables. LOSE the Carbohydrates (THINK SUGAR-BAD), that means stop the Cereal, Colas, Chips, Cookies, Candy, Cakes, Pop Tarts, and seriously modify your bread intake. Read the labels on anything that is packaged as food. I avoid most if not all pre-packaged food and any food that has more than one ingredient on the label.

RUN LIKE A MAN-EATING BEAST IS CHASING YOU, FROM ALL FAST FOOD!!!

When we train as trackers should, we always chase the perfection of our art to achieve excellence; and given the physical rigors of the environment we work in, should not we also chase perfection with our health, to realize the full excellence of performance in our duties? Stay on the trail and you will find that which you seek!!!

That might mean having to eat real food for a change…. what a concept that is. Eggs, cheese, meat, fish, chicken, pork, beans, broccoli, greens, fruit - good solid food; sounds a lot like the kind of food that used to be on the American table, back when Type II Diabetes was not a major health epidemic. Trust me, you will not starve, you will feel full, and will be healthier. You can even choose a “Cheat Day”….that is where you begin your day with half a gallon of Ben & Jerry’s and move through the waffles, pancakes, deep fried everything, and the 4.5 gallons of sweet tea: but after that day is over, get back on the “Real Food” schedule until your next Cheat Day. If you are dedicated to eating properly, you will feel lousy after eating “cheat meals.” Just your body letting you know the difference. Following this protocol, you will see a dramatic difference in energy levels. I know, I lost 60 lbs of body fat within about 30 weeks of seriously changing my lifestyle some years ago. I never gained it back. I got stronger, fitter, and much more fun to be with….well at least that is what I thought, until my wife and friends disabused me of that notion……. so anyway………. What you decide to do is always going to be up to you. Being consistent is the key: To quote Vince Lombardi, “Perfection is not attainable, but if we chase perfection, we can catch excellence.”

was the last time you did 10….15….20 pushups? How about body weight squats, or jumping jacks? Some do it in the 80’s. All are consistently doing something to improve the quality of their lives. Some do it for weight loss, blood pressure control, or to combat the effects of arthritis.

"On their last day in West Virginia, Mark takes Rose on a hike. He drives her to Bridge Road, parks in the lot serving the small, upscale strip mall, then guides her a block down a curving street, where they step off the high-traffic road and onto the hiking path and, within minutes, are so fully enclosed in the tree-studded trail that Rose cannot believe they are still in the heart of one of Charleston’s busiest residential neighborhoods.

“My aunt brought me here the first time when I was a kid. Back then, she told me a story about how this trail was built by a wealthy man for his wife, who liked to ride a horse-drawn carriage. I believed that for decades, always associating the trail with some kind of Victorian romance,” Mark laughs. “Then I looked it up and it turns out the trail was built by some governor in the early twentieth century so that workers could transport bricks to a house that he was building up the hill. He eventually used it for his carriage, and I’m sure his wife did as well, but the whole brick transport thing ruined the romantic story. I still like the trail, though.”

I was born and raised in Alexandria, Egypt, before moving to the US at age twenty-three. A decade later, I returned to college to study English Writing and Literature and to pursue my life-long dream of becoming a writer. I hold a BA and an MA in English, both from Marshall University. After graduation, I worked briefly as a part-time Instructor of English at Marshall University, teaching an Introduction to Creative Writing class as well as a class on Postcolonial Literature. I live in Charleston, WV with my husband and two children.

Rich in depth and feeling, A Pure Heart is a brilliant portrait of two Muslim women in the twenty-first century, and the decisions they make in work and love that determine their destinies. As Rose is struggling to reconcile her identities as an Egyptian and as a new American, she investigates Gameela's devotion to her religion and her country. The more Rose uncovers about her sister's life, the more she must reconcile their two fates, their inextricable bond as sisters, and who should and should not be held responsible for Gameela's death.

The path winds down, wide and well maintained, unlike the narrow trails strewn with fallen branches that Mark has taken Rose to before. Curving and turning, it alternates between spots totally enclosed in trees and others with a clear view of the river below and the city on the other bank. One such spot has been fitted with a stone bench. Mark takes Rose by the hand and guides her there. They sit down in silence, watching the city, its handful of highrises sprouting between the river on one side and the forestcovered mountains on the other.

“I’d like to spoil you a bit. You need it.” He pauses, extending one foot and ruffling some leaves that have fallen on the ground before them. “I need it,” he adds after a while. “I’ve been kind of afraid I was losing you.” His short, nervous laugh sounds like a hiccup. Rose says nothing. She wraps her palm around the arrow, feels its sharp edges dig into her skin.”

“I have something for you,” Mark says. From his pocket, he takes out a red-and-white-checkered kerchief, unfolds it, and pulls something from its center, placing the object in Rose’s palm. For a moment, Rose mistakes it for a stone, but then she recognizes the rough object.“Isthis an arrowhead?” Mark nods. “I found it on a hike when I was in high school. I tried to look it up back then and was told it may be Early Archaic—as old as the Pharaohs—but of course, this may not be true. You might be able to find out.”

What’s Cookin’ With the HHHS Class of 1971

The primary fundraiser for the scholarships will be a cookbook, Feed the Pack, that was generated from an idea by Paulette Wagner Burdette and compiled by the classmates of 1971. “All 200 recipes submitted are tasty, tried and true from appetizers to desserts,” said Johnson. The cookbook also includes a category of This & That featuring dandelion jelly, magic cake pan release, and other specialty recipes. Each recipe includes the contributor’s name so it is easy to find recipes from friends and loved ones.

If you would like to support the HHHS Class of 1971’s Vocational Educational Scholarship Fund, please consider purchasing one or more of their new cookbooks. Tax deductible donations are also welcome. Orders are being taken now to determine how many copies to print. The cookbooks will be available this fall. Johnson said, “Wouldn’t an HHHS cookbook make a great birthday, wedding shower, Christmas or ‘just thinking of you’ gift for someone you know? The cost of each cookbook is $19.71, just like the class!

36SEPT2022

The Herbert Hoover High School (HHHS) Class of 1971 has created a Vocational Education Scholarship Fund to give back to their high school alma mater. Kat Medley Johnson said, “We want to assist one or maybe even two graduating seniors each year with the expenses of their vocational education.” She explained they chose vocational scholarships because of the limited funding sources that are available for students pursuing careers in vocational fields. The Class of 1971 hopes to offer the scholarships to one of the first graduating classes at the new high school site.

Some of the 1971 HHHS alumni will be at the Clendenin Fall Festival on Saturday, September 24th with order forms also. If you have questions you can text Kat Medley Johnson at 304.552.9100 or Patti Robinson at 304.610.7501.

“I told Capital’s kids I hope whoever is their new director loves them as much as I love my kids,” said Fisher.

Capital High School hired a new director, Chris Shew from Parkersburg South, one week later, and Fisher was relieved of her double duty, but she said there will always be a special bond even though these two bands are rivals at the annual Charleston Daily Mail Band and Majorette Festival.

SALUTING FISHER!

Meleah Fisher has been the band director at Herbert Hoover High School since 2000. She is far too aware that this time of year kicks off with band camp and marching practice in the soaring July/August temperatures. Most of us try to avoid this weather, but when Fisher heard the band students at Capital High School were suddenly without a director, she knew what she wanted to do. She volunteered her time and energy double time to help the Herbert Hoover High band every morning and the Capital High band every evening as they prepared for football/marching season.

What most parents don’t consider is how much strain this must-needed accessory places on developing bodies. It has been estimated that more than 14,000 adolescents are treated yearly for pain caused by their backpacks. A poorly fitted or over-packed backpack can place increased stress on a student's developing musculoskeletal system and result in poor posture and strains. The American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons notes that carrying more than 10-15% of body weight in your backpack can result in neck, back, and shoulder pain, muscle and joint issues, and changes in posture. The good news is that, by following some easy guidelines, you can prevent all of these injuries and get the most out of your school year!

1) Two is better than one! Use both shoulder straps to help evenly distribute weight. Keep them snug so the pack stays close to your body.

5) One size DOESN’T fit all. The pack should be centered and fit snugly against the back. It should not extend more than 2 inches below the waist…this will cause your child to lean forward to distribute the weight and cause increased strain on the lower back and hips. The backpack should not be wider than the torso and should be made of lightweight material.

Backpack Safety

Don’t let your backpack slow you down!

A few red flags for backpack trouble include: pain (neck, back, or shoulder), difficulty maneuvering while wearing the backpack, or imbalanced backpack wear. Back to school is an exciting time.

4) Wide is good. When it comes to shoulder straps, wide padded straps will distribute weight best. Using the chest/waist strap will also help distribute the load.

2) Keep the weight low. Limit weight to 10% of the child's body weight. If your child weighs 100 pounds, their backpack should not weigh more than 10 pounds.

3) Placement is key. Place objects in the backpack so the heaviest one is closest to the body and the lightest one is the furthest away. Use compartments in the backpack to distribute weight evenly as well.
