Captain’s Address

Dear Members, This month would have been one of the most eventful months, supposedly beginning with the Intraport Match with the Royal Thai Navy (RTN) and two of our own competitions, but the Intraport has to be postponed at the request of the RTN. Congratulations to Khun Sathirut Tandanand for his victory of H.E. Nakasone Trophy which is the only competition played on Stableford format. This trophy has been left out from our fixtures for the last few years and I am happy to welcome it back to our regular fixtures. Congratulations to Khun Sompiti Rattanasudjai and Khun Paniti Junhasavasdikul for their victories as the Champion and the Runner-up of this year’s Captain’s Prize Competition. Congratulations also to Dr. Ketchayong Skowratananont for being the lucky golfer to have been drawn the additional RBSC Captain’s Prize 2011 - Golf Bag. Many thanks to members’ for their quick response in filling up the team for the Interport Match with the Hong Kong Golf Club (HKGC) in a record time! For the golfers who wish to practice and play at HKGC on the day before the Interport Match, the transport and tee-off time have been arranged at the New Course. Please check the details and make your reservation with the Starters as spaces are limited. We tried to arrange a special friendly match with the members of the Duffers, Hong Kong, as we did last year but unfortunately HKGC is unable to accommodate the friendly match this time because of another main competition held on the same day at their location. The poster for the Mixed Team Competition is now on the notice board. Several able lady golfers are still looking for able men golfers to pair with and vie for the victory. Please let the Starters know, if you are interested in playing this contest but unable to find a golf partner. In addition to the Annual Golf Round-up on Saturday 6th and Sunday 7th, November will also hold a very special event for Thailand which RBSC and the Members will have a part in the participation. On Sunday, 27th November, RBSC will join the golf courses around the kingdom in the nationwide event “Golfers Love the King” to celebrate His Majesty the King’s 84th birthday and attempt a new record in the Guinness World Records for “Largest Golfers Playing in One-Day Tournament at Multiple Golf Courses”. Our golf course will be closed for this special event and RBSC golfers are urged to be a part of this celebration. Please check the detail on our notice board and sign up as soon as possible.

Yours sincerely, Chawalit Chanarat RBSC Golf Captain

Captain’s Corner

Dear Members, The last ‘major ’ championship of the year for Ladies’ Golf at the R oyal Bangkok Spor ts Club was H.M. The Queen’s Birthday Cup which was played on the 9th and 10th of August. This year the fight was so close and exciting till the very last few holes. Congratulations to the winner Khun Phandhida Sucharittanonta, 1st runner-up Khun Montatip Chandra-Chamnong and 2nd runner-up Khun Chindarat Kruavanichkit for playing so well in this tournament. This is Khun Phandhida’s first Queen’s Cup win after being so close a few times in previous years. September’s tournament was the Pol. Gen. Chamras Cup, played on Friday 16th September. This was the last Stableford tournament of the year a format that puts less pressure on golfers but increases their enjoyment. The winner was one of the hardest working golfers Mrs. Fuyumi Watanabe and the runner-up Khun Praneet Tinawong is no stranger to the winner’s circle. It is well worth noting also that this is Mrs. Fuyumi’s first win since 1993! Congratulations to both ladies!! Again, our thanks to Khun Pinet Mandukananda and his wife Khun Thipawan, who graciously presided over the Ladies Golf Luncheon and presented the trophy, which was donated by Khun Pinet’s father. Their continuing family connection with ladies golf at the club is much appreciated and we all enjoyed their company. Next tournament is Captain’s Prizes, rescheduled on Monday 17 October. There are four special flights for this competition, created to give golfers of any age and handicap the chance to take a trophy home. I’m sure it will be a lot of fun for all at the party after the tournament for which the dress code is “International Day”. I came across this quote from Thomas Jefferson, the third US President, “I find that the harder I work, the more luck I seem to have.” I wonder if he had played golf too. See you on the driving range and on the course!

Best regards,

Pibulsonggram Cup Internationals Pull Off Rare Upset to Lift Golf Challenge Cup

I

n what was felt to be an extraordinary achievement, Internationals pulled off a rare upset against favourites – Thai Team – to lift the prestigious Pibulsonggram Cup in one of the oldest competitions played at the Royal Bangkok Sports Club on 20 August. Titled Pibulsonggram Golf Challenge Cup, the match-play event was instituted by Field Marshal Plaek Pibulsonggram more than 50 years ago. It was formerly a scratch competition pitching the best of ‘Farangs’ (Inernational Team) against the Thais. Thanks to the abundance of avid golfers, the Thais won most times, while the Internationals secured only eight wins ever since the start of the tournament.

Dr. Tonphong Kaewkongka, Thai Team Captain Dr. Rattachat Mongkolnavin, Mr. Suvir Sachdev and Khun Pracha Sivasiamphai As the competition gained popularity over the years, many enthusiastic Japanese, Indians, Malaysians, Britons and Americans joined the ‘Farangs’ or the ‘Rest’ team, as it was referred to previously, which eventually became the ‘International’ team. This year, RBSC Golf Vice Captain Dr. Rattachat Mongkolnavin led the Thais and Mr. Michael Baxter the Internationals. Nine pairs from each side played the tourney in Four Ball, Best Ball format with full handicap. As the tournament ended, Internationals emerged victorious with 7 points, outwitting the otherwise strong Thai team by 4 points.

Khun Nitya, who paired with RBSC Golf Vice Captain Khun Surin Banyatpiyaphod for the Thai team, not only displayed the best of his golf skills but also won the match against Mr. John Davidson and Mr. Roy Barrett 2-0.

RBSC vs. RTAF Intraport Match RBSC Golfers take Sweet Revenge on Their Air Force Friends!

G

olfers of the Royal Bangkok Sports Club (RBSC) took sweet revenge on their old-time friends from the Royal Thai Air Force (RTAF) in a rain-hit Intraport Match played on 27 August at the Sports Club. Established in 1966 by Air Chief Marshal Boonchu Chantarubeksa, a former Commander-in-Chief of the Royal Thai Air Force, the bilateral golf competition is played every year with a view to fostering friendly ties between the two clubs. Both sides alternately host the annual event and the venue for each year is decided by the hosting side. The winning team is privileged to hold the trophy for one year.

Being played for the 45th time, the match was held this year at the compact but highly challenging RBSC Golf Course. With narrow fairways and water in play on many holes, the 18-hole, par-66course poses innumerable challenges, especially to visiting golfers. The golf course is probably one of a kind in the city where ‘accuracy’ and ‘direction’ take priority over ‘power’ and ‘distance’. Last year, the match was played on the par-72 Dhupatemiya Golf Course in Pathum Thani in which RBSC golfers tasted defeat at the hands of ‘RTAF fighters’ by a margin of 35 points.

Determined to take sweet revenge on their friends, the RBSC players led by Golf Captain Khun Chawalit Chanarat staged a valiant fight against the RTAF contingent when they returned to the Sports Club’s battleground on Saturday under the leadership of their Commander-in-Chief ACM. Itthaporn Subhawong.

Gp. Capt. Wisnu Sucharit, Khun Prooprayoon Isarasakdi Naayuthya, Khun Vorachai Lerdpraiwan and Gp. Capt. Manas Chawanaprayoon

More than 80 golfers representing the two sides hit the course at the shotgun start at 1 pm. The RTAF team included several present and former commanders and officers of the Air Force. Unfortunately, the match which was about to turn into an intense fight was called off half way as heavy downpour played spoilsport. By that time, some groups finished 12 holes and some where playing their 10th. So to arrive at the team scores, the best individual scores from each side on the front nine holes were considered. RBSC members, who turned in a combined 631 strokes, were declared as the winners. The combined score of RTAF players was 639 or 8 over.

As regards the RTAF side, AVM Na-Pol Ruchaikam (9), GP. Capt. Verasak Nuanplod (6) and GP. Capt. Manee Chumpanoi (7) respectively achieved the low net scores of 27, 29 and 29. During the presentation ceremony held at the Winning Post, RBSC Golf Captain Khun Chawalit Chanarat received the winners’ trophy from ACM Itthaporn Subhawong. H.M. the Queen’s Birthday Cup Phandhida Proves Too Good for Past Champs!

W

Ace golfer Khun Phandhida Sucharittanonta (6), who had won the H.M. Queen Rambhai Barni Trophy pairing with Khun Duangphorn Tangchitnob earlier in March, proved too good to for the defending champion Khun Chindarat Kruavanichkit and all those who had lifted the prestigious cup in the recent past.

hen does the otherwise serene-looking Royal Bangkok Sports Club Golf Course turn into a virtual battleground of champion lady golfers every year? Those who play competitive golf at the Sports Club know the answer very well – early August. The occasion…? The last ‘major’ hosted by the RBSC Ladies Golf SubCommittee for the H.M. the Queen’s Birthday Cup. The competition this year was organised as usual for two days from 9 to 10 August in the stroke play format with a maximum handicap of 18. Several avid golfers among RBSC ladies, including many past champions, vied for the victory laurels.

32

September 2011

Unlike other contests, this tourney assumes much significance as it is open only to serious golfers who regularly play golf and take part in various competitions at the Sports Club. According to the competition rules, the participants should submit score cards from at least three tournaments held earlier during the year in order to be eligible to take part in H.M. the Queen’s Birthday Cup. This year’s ‘battle of champions’ was more fierce than ever. At the end of the qualifying round held on the first day, title holder Khun Chindarat (6) and Khun Phandhida carded 2-under-par 64 each and tied for the 1st position. Close on their heels were Khun Montatip Chandra-Chamnong (7), Ausanee Sosothikul (14) and Khun Vevika Chotiros (5) with 65 each. Khun Phandhida looked unstoppable in the final round the next day in which she fired a blistering 62 or 4-under par to record an outright lead and win the H.M. the Queen’s Birthday Cup in style. Khun Montatip and Khun Chindarat satisfied with the 1st and 2nd runner-up positions as they turned in a two-day total of 129 and 131 respectively.

Khun Mayuree Phornprapha, Khun Montira Wongtrakun and Khun Sasitorn Chokwatana Speaking to RBSC ELITE, Khun Phandhida said: “Although I was well prepared for this tournament, I was not really expecting a victory. I just played my best. On the first day, I was co-leading with 2-under par. It made me feel confident with my swing and putting, which really helped in my game. I tried to play as well as I can the next day without looking at other’s scores. I finished the first nine holes with a gross score of square par. It made me feel very confident and took away my fears and conquered my mental demons.”

It’s one of my best achievements of all times and will remain memorable forever! Everything just came together perfectly with absolutely no problems. This victory has encouraged me to play better golf by practicing more and mastering my mind to stay calm and focus on my game. Khun Phandhida further said: “It has been the greatest year in my golfing life! I began it winning a major team championship Queen Rambhai Barni’s Cup, which I paired with Khun Duangporn, followed by this unforgettable win. I would like to express my sincere thanks to Pro Lek who helped me improve my swing and for sharing his golf techniques before the tournament. No...Those tied positions were not from the leaderboard of an LPGA or LGAT (Ladies golf Asian Tour) event. They were extracted from the scoreboard of a tournament held at the Royal Bangkok Sports Club on Friday, 16 September, for the Pol. Gen. Chamras Cup. With several RBSC ladies showcasing their very best of golfing skills in the tournament, there were too many ties starting from the 2nd position indicating as to how competitive golf has become among the lady golfers of the Sports Club. One of the many popular events organised at RBSC, the tournament is being held every year since 1964 in honour of Pol. Gen. Chamras Mandukananda, who was the first Thai citizen to officiate as the Chairman of the Sports Club. One of the longest-serving chairmen, Pol. Gen. Chamras served for 14 years until 1977. Several avid lady golfers participated in the tourney that was organised by the Ladies’ Golf Sub-Committee in Stableford format with full handicap of maximum 20.

Who inspired you to take up golf? My friends What did you learn from playing golf? I think we can learn a lot from golf, for example, we can learn to develop self-discipline when we practise and be honest to ourselves and our partners (when we record our scores). And the most important thing we can learn from golf is to control our emotions and how to keep our cool when we hit bad shots. Besides, we can meet a lot of people and find new friends who share common interests. Do you have any memorable moments in your golfing life? Definitely…My memorable moment was when I first had my hole-in-one and the best of such moments was when I drilled my fourth ace in 2010. In all, I aced four different par-3s at the same course - The Royal Gems Golf and Sport Club. Have you played a round of golf with any PGA pros? I had a great opportunity and honour to play with Gary Player. Although we could not complete all the 18 holes due to his busy schedule, it was a wonderful experience for me to play with him. Who is your favorite professional golfer? Arnold Palmer, Gary Player and Jack Nicklaus If you get a chance, which pro golfer you would like to play with? I would like to play ‘again’ with Gary Player…but this time all 18 holes please (laughs)!

As the Chairman of the Thai Golf Course Association, how do you see the future of Golf in the Kingdom? I am very confident that there will be many more high quality golf courses to be developed in the future and Thailand will be one of most attractive golf destinations in Asia thanks to its USPs - perfect weather all year round, affordable green fees, different types of golf courses in every region of the country and most important of all the variety of services each course can provide to golfers far better than golf courses in other countries. Thus, golf courses in Thailand will have good perspective and bright future and can easily serve international golfers. Driver:

Who inspired you to take up golf? My Dad (Khun Direk). He hired Pro Bung to teach golf to his children, including me, at home in 1970. What did you learn from playing golf? I have learnt many things from golf. Patience, giving and forgiveness are a few to mention. Besides, the game has taught me how to know yourself, your emotions and nerves. Through golf I have come to know that the body and soul sometimes work together in perfect harmony and sometimes they go by their own without any reason. Golf helped me to know people around me and to integrate myself with the nature. Another important thing I learnt is - “Anything can happen. So accept it with grace”. Do you have any memorable moments in your golfing life? My great moments to cherish were when I won St. Amory Cup in 2005 and RBSC Cup in 2008 and on quite a few occasions when I was the first runner-up at Mixed Team Championship and Hongladarom Cup. I like the recent tournament for the Hongladarom Cup very much because that was the toughest match that I have ever played in my life. We hit the course early morning and battled on the field until late evening (36 holes) while walking together with big crowd. Have you got a hole-in-one? Never in my life! But the nearest miss was just by half a centimeter!! I have been playing golf for more than 30 years now. Yet not lucky enough. Have you played a round of golf with any PGA pros? No, I haven’t. But I walked along with Greg Norman and Tiger Woods to watch them playing a tournament in Thailand. Who are your favorite professional golfers? Tiger woods - He is a good golfer and a superman with a lot of power. I believe he will be back soon to win his first title after a long gap. Thaworn Wiratchant - He has his own style. He trusts in his own swing and works very hard. He is cool and humble on and off the course. If you get a chance, which pro golfer you would like to play with? Michelle Wie - Her boneless swing is a pleasure to watch!

Have you played golf abroad? Of course, so many places to mention here. But Thailand is the best country to play golf and no country can beat it! Which golf course in the world you like the most and why? Hong Kong Golf Club - I visit this club almost every year to play interport matches while being a member of the RBSC Team. The course layout is good with big trees and nice weather. The food is delicious too. Singapore Island Country Club Their new Clubhouse is very nice! Good management, polite staff and friendly golfers there make your visit truly memorable. What activities are you interested in other than golf? Nothing else but golf!

Maximise Swing Speed by Fixing Your Fatigue 7. 8.

adrenal glands

kidney

Waking up after a night’s sleep still feeling tired Extreme exhaustion that lasts more than 24 hours after modest physical or mental activity.

Causes The major causes of adrenal fatigue can usually be traced to a person’s daily routines and habits, including diet, consumption of caffeine, nicotine and/or medication, unresolved personal or family conflicts, and poor sleep habits.

kidney

Substance abuse, chronic pain, and other illnesses can also take a toll on these tiny but powerful glands. Treatment and prevention Making healthier everyday lifestyle choices, including the following, is the proven strategy for preventing potential problems with the adrenal glands:

bladder

Hydration and nutrition Make water your primary drink-of-choice; drinks containing sugar, caffeine and/or alcohol add to the burden of the adrenal glands. Healthy foods and supplements containing vitamins B, C and E can also support proper adrenal gland function.

T

he demands of golf in time and energy can end up draining the body’s balancing power. Even those in prime health condition can become fatigued due to the chronic, pervasive stress that can accompany competitive golf and other pursuits. Many golfers reach a point where constant tiredness or extreme fatigue forces them to take a break from the game that demands more than their bodies can deliver.

Electrolyte drinks that contain magnesium, calcium and other important trace minerals such as zinc, manganese, selenium and iodine have a calming effect on the body. These minerals can also boost energy while helping to alleviate stress that comes with, and causes, adrenal fatigue.

If you’ve been feeling constantly tired and sense that something must be amiss with your health, the culprit may turn out to be a medical condition called adrenal fatigue.

More frequent, smaller meals Eating five or six small, healthy meals and snacks throughout the day can help restore the health of your adrenal glands. Avoid fasting longer than four hours between meals.

Large responsibilities The body’s two adrenal glands are located directly above the kidneys. They have the important responsibility of producing essential hormones needed throughout the body. These hormones are critical for controlling metabolism, regulating inflammation, keeping the immune system healthy, controlling sodium excretion, and regulating blood pressure and circulation.

Early to bed Most people need seven to nine hours of sleep every night for optimal health. Getting to bed by 10:00 pm is ideal; the hours between 11:00 pm and 1:00 am are believed to be extremely important to bodily functions responsible for recovery and repair.

The adrenal glands’ tiny size belies their critical role in protecting health and exerting influence over our physical fitness, including how well we perform on the golf course.

Research has shown that, when sleep-deprived men napped for 40 minutes, their performance improved 34 percent. If you’re sleep deprived, imagine what a nap could do for your golf game.

When functioning at their peak, the adrenal glands help us feel energised all the way through all-day and multi-day sporting events, yet they still allow us to be relaxed just when we’re lining up that crucial birdie putt. And when they’re not functioning properly, the game gets a lot tougher as our physical fitness becomes noticeably impaired.

Stress management Deep breathing is among the most effective ways to manage tension and stress, whether you’re at the office or locked in a challenging match on the golf course. When done properly, deep breathing triggers the body’s parasympathetic nervous system, producing what’s known as the “natural relaxation response”.

Warning signs The following symptoms may indicate a health problem related to the adrenal glands: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6.

If you follow these healthy guidelines and don’t see noticeable improvement within four weeks, contact a wellness physician for a consultation and check-up which may include testing for adrenal health problems. To make an appointment, call Vitallife at 0 2667 2340, or log on to www.e-vitallife.com.

Memory problems and/or difficulty concentrating Enlarged or swollen lymph glands in the armpits and/ or neck Sore throat Headaches that are unusual in severity or pattern Joint pain which occurs without arthritis-related redness and/or swelling Sore muscles

Many golfers experience adrenal fatigue at some point, but there’s no rule that says you have to be one of them!

Target Golf

Khun Thavorn’s Way of Overcoming Challenges ‘n’ Hazards at RBSC Course Thavorn Arthachinta (nickname ‘Noi’) is a familiar figure among the golfing members of the Royal Bangkok Sports Club. In his 57 years of golfing in USA and Thailand, he has drilled as many as 6 holes-in-one, three of which he achieved at RBSC. Khun Noi studied and practiced as an engineer for 15 years in the US and returned to Bangkok in 1967 to subsequently establish an engineering consultancy firm. Through his company, he rendered professional services for several World Bank financed government projects until retirement. He was the first Thai to be granted two Professional Engineer (P.E.) licences by Arizona State Board of Technical Registration in Civil Engineering (1965) and Structural Engineering (1967). Khun Noi has been playing golf regularly ever since he joined the Sports Club in 1976. A regular patron of the Air Bar during the Club Nights on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays, Khun Noi is fondly called by his friends as a golfer who loves to ‘swing’, ‘sing’, and ‘Singh’ (‘Singha’ beer)! By virtue of his engineering background and a determination to overcome the course obstacles, Khun Noi has developed an approach to identify and set up predetermined targets on each fairway of the golf course, a technique he calls ‘target golf’. This article is part of a series being featured by RBSC ELITE under the column Target Golf My Way written by Khun Thavorn. Each article of the series covers three holes of the RBSC course and describes his own ideas on ‘target golf’ – the way he would plan and play each hole using different combination of clubs to best avoid all hazards! Most importantly, to avoid hitting stray golf balls that harm and cause injuries to fellow golfers playing on adjacent fairways!! Friends.....Did you know that ‘target golf’ contributed to success in a Major golf tournament?

I

n the 2000 British Open, Tiger Woods won by a landslide 8-stroke margin playing the Old Course at St. Andrews. The layout has long been notorious for its several deep sand bunkers. The media praised Woods’ victory to the fact that he didn’t even have to play one bunker shot in all the four rounds.

Later, it was made public that he had all the locations charted out on papers during his preparation for the tournament. He targeted every golf shot, not even one ball got into a bunker for the entire 72 holes. That’s a lot of bunkers, some 440 traps to get away with. He was so accurately in control and won the Claret Jug with the most satisfying tournament record. Knowledge of golf rules and local rules can be applied to your advantage. Rule 18-5 and 19-5 explain the situation when a ball at rest hit by a moving ball. When your playing partner puts his ball on the green, you see here all the time that his caddy would rush to the ball and mark it. This very often irritates me because it disturbs my concentration when I am about to hit. Many do not know that when a golfer hit the ball and the ball came to a complete stop, his turn, including any involvement of his caddy, is over. It’s now your turn! Your playing partner has no legitimate right any more on his ball unless you allow it so. You have the right to have the ball remained at that position or have it marked and left there or have it marked and lifted. All this must be to your advantage. Often times, I would tell him (caddy) to leave the ball there, marked or not, especially if that ball was behind the cup. My reason is to take advantage of having that ball there to stop my ball not to go far beyond the cup. The rule allows me to do so without incurring penalty although his ball must be brought back to original position while my ball stay where it lied. It’s very useful to know this especially when I accidently top the ball and the only thing I pray to stop my ball was a flag stick. Now I have the flag stick and three other balls to act as bumpers for my ball. So it helps to understand the rules and use them to our advantage.

Hole #13 (128 yds, par 3)

(The layout is not up to date)

This hole has a beautiful layout. To me, it is the most beautiful of the entire 18! Situated at the corner of the club boundary fences, you must be straight with the correct distance to carry the pond. Once the ball lands on the green, it will stop taking only a few hops because the green is receptive to the ball sloping from back to front. Unfortunately the yardage marker shows 128 yards which is in error resulting in many balls landed in water. I’d say that it takes 135 yards to clear the water. The green is long, about 23 long steps from end to end. I was fortunate to pocket two aces here. My way here is to use a stronger club, say a 7 iron, but hit it easy, not forceful to control the direction. The bunkers at each side of the green are real traps, hard to come out, for, there is no room to land or stop the ball. If I have to get out, I’ll aim my ball to place on the top part of the green allowing enough distance to roll down the slope. The same when I putt if my ball is above the hole. When the ball is alongside the cup, be careful of speed and a big break combined. I have fond memories and look forward to be playing here every round.

Hole #14 (283 yds, par 4) When the tee is placed at the back, there are several spots I must look out for. The foremost of all is the dangling tree branch that brings frustration to many golfers, including me. Why doesn’t someone axe it off ? Second the klong running parallel to the left of the fairway. To stay away from the klong I may find sand traps on the right under the old big tree. All these only spell trouble! I will aim left of the trees to a landing ground between 130 to110 yards to the green. My marker here is the drain pipe under a walkway joining the race track and this fairway where I paced to be 140 yards to the green. I give up distance in exchange of the risk of going into the water, sand and trees. If my plan is correct, my shot to the green is always certain. The green also is pitched to stop the ball with slope. Be sure not to over shoot the green for the ball will not stop coming back. This green is known to be fast with big breaks.

Hole #15 (208 yds, par 3) We all have to hit across the 12th fairway. There had been several golf accidents recorded here. Please be cautious before teeing off and always look behind toward the 12th tee box. This long par three is another difficult hole for a short hitter like me. I aim to the right of the long grass strip separating the two fairways so I don’t have to hit over the left bunker. Let me tell you, this is a very hard course with obstacles that will raise your score. You may not have done it but many times I tore up my score card, didn’t even want to look at it. My normal result here is a happy bogie, but sometimes a surprise lucky par! One more thing...You may not know until you’re in it that a sand trap is hidden behind the green. There are some golfers who are very much dependent on a particular caddy. They just can’t play well without the man. Well, please don’t be that way. On the golf course, you are the Commander; your caddy is your luk-nong or foot-soldier. It’s your responsibility to know almost everything when on the course. You can get his advice but the decision is yours before you strike the ball.

What Makes Him a ‘Pan’tastic Golfer!

2

000-2009: Winner of 10 BISAC Tournaments for Shrewsbury International School... Winner of several Junior Club Championships under various age divisions... 2004: Winner of The Nation Golf Tournament... 2008: 4-under par 72 at Rajapruek GC... 2009: Hole-in-one on Hole #1 at RBSC... 2010:Junior Club Champion... 2011 (and beyond): Yet to unfold…

What is your average driving distance? 270 yards is my average, although there tends to be quite a big gap between my worst and best drives. What is your lowest gross score so far? Where and when did you achieve it? Four-under par 72 was my best score. It was at North Park Rajpruek GC when they used temporary greens. Ironically, now, when the course is in tip-top condition, I rarely come close to par.

Those were some of the achievements of an RBSC kid that make him a ‘pan’tastic golfer! (Oops…Please read it as ‘fantastic golfer’! But if you know whom this story is about, you can easily understand the typo was intentional.)

Who inspired you to take up golf? My father introduced me to the game. He started off with a putting competition on the home carpet into a red Pringle’s tube. He would let me have more goes putting into the tube and at the end taught me to tally them up on a scorecard. I enjoyed the competitive pressure and then it was Pro Poong (Khun Pasda Buransiri) and Pro Lek who taught me to play.

He learnt the ABCs of golf from his father and XYZs from Pro Poong and Pro Lek. He has grown up learning golf at the Sports Club to become Junior Club Champion last year. With still three months remaining in this calendar year and the bright future ahead, he is vying for big wins in golf. Meet Panpaiboon (Pan) Leenutaphong, this month’s rising star who is the son of an RBSC member Khun Vithit Leenutaphong. Pan is currently pursuing higher education in the UK. He recently talked to RBSC ELITE when he visited the Sports Club.

What has golf taught you? My father has taught me that with golf, every new hole is a new beginning. I believe the same principle applies with work such that every new task or exam is a new opportunity to perform well regardless of our past efforts. It has also taught me to be responsible in terms of time and discipline (or otherwise reminded myself of my lack of it). Pro Poong has taught me to take each hole shot by shot, no matter what score we get. With life, based on the same principle, my father has taught me to do the very best we can at the present moment - in our role as a son, a brother, a student, a friend - regardless of what we want to achieve in life.

What is your current handicap? 5.5, but with the current swing changes, 9 would seem more reasonable.

Taking the lesson from Head Instructor Matthew Wiltshire at Wilding Golf Sathorn Centre

Checking his swing at a simulator bay

Do you have any memorable moments while playing golf at RBSC? My hole-in-one on the first hole with my driver as a young kid was one of my most memorable moments. My friend P’ Putter asked me to play one more hole after 9 holes and my ace on what was the tenth hole of the day made me love golf even more because of its unpredictability. I also remember growing up playing with my father on the course. It was fun because the front tees were suited more to my driving distance. If I hadn’t learnt golf at RBSC, I wouldn’t have loved the game this much.

Who is your role model when it comes to golf? It used to be Tiger.... Well, I have just recently changed because he ditched Steve! Now it is none other than my Dad! I always admired my father’s golfing abilities. I cannot recall him going to the range in the past few years. His swing always remains the same and his putts tend to sink even though he is under pressure. The course record lowest gross at RBSC was 57 achieved by RBSC pro golfer Khun Pariya in 2007. Do you think you can break that record one day in the future? Golf is all about luck. If everything falls into place on the same day then it can be interesting and that, I think, is the beauty of this game. But 57?! I think I would still need to do a lot more good deeds to be that lucky.

Any interesting things that you remember while playing golf abroad? I played golf for the very first time at Overstone Park, the UK, with my Dad recently. I did not notice much difference. But, because I was very young, my father had to carry my bag for me! I have also attended a summer camp in Bradenton, Florida at the David Leadbetter Golf Academy (DLGA). I played and practiced all day, everyday, for three whole weeks. I improved my game a lot! I was very impressed with the high number of ambitious kids there.

Which areas in your golf game that you want to see improvement and how do you go about it? Being in a period right before applying to university, golf would inevitably have to become secondary in my daily activities. So, my short game being rusty should be normal.

How different are playing conditions at North Oxford GC when compared to RBSC or other golf courses in Thailand? In Oxford, I live next to the golf course. The course itself is in fact very similar to RBSC. Being a members’ club, the course is considerably short but has many 200+ yards, par 3s. The holes are very narrow with very little leeway for miss-hits, so there is always the risk and reward question of going out with the driver, as at RBSC. The management of NOGC is also very supportive of juniors with their annual green fee equating to what would last three 18-hole rounds on a typical course in Thailand. At NOGC, there are also no golf carts so the only real difference I would say is the presence of caddies here, which can play a very important role in the RBSC golfing experience!

However, I feel my swing can see much improvement. The simulators at Wilding Golf really allow me to see my own swing and major changes can realistically be achieved. So, I am very excited about that and visit Wilding Golf’s newly set up Sathorn Centre whenever I am here (in Bangkok). Do you aspire to make a career in professional golf? If not, what do you want to be when you grow up? If I go to university in the UK then golf would need to be enjoyed as a hobby because of the not so favourable weather conditions and facilities available. If that is so, then I would still try to get involved in golf-related businesses, which I see a lot of potential in, such as SouthWest Greens’ installation of artificial turf!

How Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting Can Reduce the Risk of Future Heart Attacks An Interview with Dr. Kosin Thupvong of Bangkok Heart Hospital

C

oronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) is a type of surgery that improves blood flow to the heart. The procedure is performed on those suffering from ischemic heart disease (IHD), or myocardial ischemia, a disease characterized by a reduced blood supply to the heart muscles, usually due to coronary artery disease.

How is a CABG performed and what are the common types of the surgery? Coronary artery bypass grafting is a bypass surgery in which a healthy artery or vein from the body is connected or grafted to the blocked coronary artery. The grafted artery or vein bypasses (goes around) the blocked portion of the coronary artery, creating a new passage for oxygen-rich blood to reach the heart muscle. Although there are more than two types of CABG, the most common are conventional on-pump surgery in which the heart is stopped during surgery and vital functions are maintained using a heart-lung machine, and off-pump surgery performed while the heart is still beating. What lifestyle changes do you suggest to avoid the risk of getting IHD? You have to change the way you eat. If you have high cholesterol, you should stop eating fatty foods and change your diet. you ought to have it under control. Some people may need medication to keep cholesterol down. If you are a smoker, you should quit the habit. If you are obese, you should bring your weight down.

Coronary artery disease (CAD) is a condition in which a substance called plaque builds up inside the coronary arteries. The coronary arteries supply oxygen-rich blood to your heart. The plaque, which is made up of fat, cholesterol, calcium and other substances found in the blood, can narrow or block the coronary arteries and reduce blood flow. If the blockage is severe, angina (chest pain), shortness of breath and, in some cases, heart attack can occur.

How quickly can a patient expect to recover after undergoing CABG? CABG procedure is quite good these days. Patients can go home in about a week’s time after the surgery. And in about three weeks, they can go back to work provided it doesn’t involve much physical effort. They can lead a normal life and carry out most physical activities as they were doing before in about 6-8 weeks. They can also do cardiovascular exercises or play golf just as anyone else, though they should continue to be on medication as advised by their doctor.

To learn more about ischemic heart disease and CABG, RBSC ELITE met Dr. Kosin Thupvong, Cardiothoracic Surgeon of Bangkok Heart Hospital. Following are the interview highlights: What are the symptoms of ischemic heart disease? The symptoms in general include chest pain or tightness in the chest (like somebody is sitting on your chest), pain in the jaw, or one of your arms getting easily tired. These signs are a clear warning that you may have ischemic heart disease. However, not everyone will have all these symptoms. For instance, patients suffering from diabetes will often not have any chest pain. They just have shortage of breath.

What can patients expect at Bangkok Heart Hospital with respect of CABG? Off-pump coronary artery bypass (OPCAB), also called ‘beating heart surgery’, is better for the patient in general as it eliminates the complications associated with the use of cardiopulmonary bypass (heart-lung machine). That said, not many doctors perform OPCAB since it is harder to perform when compared to the on-pump procedure. In contrast, 98% of CABG surgeries done at Bangkok Heart Hospital are off-pump. And so far, there hasn’t been a single case of heart failure or death! We have been doing off-pump surgeries successfully for quite some time now. We have a talented team of doctors, including cardiothoracic surgeons and anesthesiologists. Obviously, patients can expect the best treatment here. We get lot of patients from Myanmar, Vietnam and around the region. Some of them are from Hong Kong and even the USA!

Who is at risk of having IHD? Anyone suffering from obesity, hypertension, diabetes, high cholesterol, untreated atrial fibrillation as well as those with a family history and those who smoke are at risk. How is IHD diagnosed? One of the simple ways to diagnose IHD is to do an EKG (electrocardiogram). If anything abnormal is found, it means that something is wrong with your heart. But if there are no abnormalities, then you may have to undergo a stress test. This involves running on a treadmill while connected to the EKG. The doctor may also advise you to go for an echocardiogram, which is an ultrasound study of the heart. A CT scan of the heart may also be performed. If the CT scan is positive, the ultimate test is to have a conventional angiogram to determine the severity of the condition. Surgery is the last resort. If the artery is not that bad, the patient is treated medically. If normal function is not restored through medication, then we will place a balloon (stent) in the artery to help it stay open – a procedure known as angioplasty. If stenting cannot be done, as it is too dangerous to do it on a severely narrowed artery, or if there are two or three such damaged arteries, then surgery may be recommended.

Bangkok Heart Hospital, which is well-known in the region for open heart procedures, is offering an all-in-one package for CABG priced at 395,000 baht and includes CCU for 2 nights, standard single room for 5 nights with nursing care, meals and room service, operating room fees, medication, medical supplies/equipment, lab tests, radiological examination and cardiac rehabilitation staff service as well as surgeons, anesthesiologists, cardiologist and cardiac rehabilitation physician fees. The package rate excludes certain pre-operative and post-operative charges and additional expenses incurred by patients with other complications. The package is valid until December 31, 2011.

Immortalising a Nation-Building Visionary WHO PUT THAILAND ON WHEELS!

A Talk on Dr. Thaworn Phornprapha Museum with his Son Dr. Phornthep Phornprapha 50

September 2011

“A

- By Simon Nathan

But neither his words of wisdom nor lessons of life have been consigned to oblivion. Instead, they have greatly appreciated in value, found a permanent place in the minds of his descendants, made an indelible mark on their lifestyle and provided them the guiding light to achieve success in their personal and professional lives!

good man leaveth an inheritance for his children’s children,” goes a Biblical proverb. A man who is righteous and principled leaves behind his legacy that his descendants will build upon for generations. Whatever property he left that was honestly acquired grows well to last for a long, long time.

Dr. Thaworn was a visionary entrepreneur and nation builder who had played a pivotal role in transforming an underdeveloped agrarian society into an emerging industrial giant.

Although a virtuous man ceases to exist materialistically after the end of his earthly career, he still lives in the minds of everyone who follows his ‘pearls’ of wisdom and caution and his good example and advices are remembered by generation after generation. If that isn’t true, the below words from the late Dr. Thaworn Phornprapha, the founder of one of Thailand’s leading conglomerates Siam Motors Group, would have been easily forgotten!

His example of honesty and perseverance, combined with a visionary and pioneering spirit, has brought success and prosperity to Siam Motors as well as the nation.

Pearls of Wisdom from Dr. Thaworn Phornprapha

Under his stewardship, the Siam Motors Group expanded and diversified into a large number of subsidiary companies.

“With honesty, ability and diligence you will achieve nothing but SUCCESS!”

For half a century, the group has been one of Thailand’s longest-established conglomerates and regional powerhouses with a wealth of experience in diverse businesses, particularly the automotive industry.

“Good children are treasures of the family, good employees are treasures of the company and good citizens are treasures of the nation.”

As a tribute to Dr. Thaworn, his son Dr. Phornthep Phornprapha initiated a great project immortalising his life, thoughts and deeds.

“With our business successes, we need to be socially concerned. Without the society, we cannot survive. Our commitment is to return part of our profits to the society.”

The project launched by Dr. Phornthep in the name of his nation-building visionary father is Dr. Thaworn Phornprapha Museum.

(Thailand) Co., Ltd.

Located on the 19th floor of the Siam Motors building on Rama I Road in Pathumwan, Dr. Thaworn Phornprapha Museum reminisces about all important milestones in the monumental life of Dr. Thaworn, who originally migrated from China to Thailand as a six-year-old child with his parents in 1922.

Industrial Centre. This vast, modern estate is located on Bangna-Trad Road, Km.21, covering more than 800-rai and packed with some of today’s most modern and advanced manufacturing technologies. Siam Nissan Automobile Co., Ltd. was established to commence the production of Nissan pick-up trucks in Thailand and its current production capacity is 200,000 units per year. Subsequently, the company changed its name to Nissan Motor

Apart from its core automotive manufacturing and distributing business, Siam Motors Group, has also diversified its business interests into other manufacturing industries and trading businesses, including Komatsu heavy equipment & forklift, Hitachi elevator and escalator, Hitachi auto parts, Daikin airconditioner, NSK bearings & steering column system, Valeo car air-conditioner, Calsonic car radiators, Yamaha music and audio products, Siam Kolkarn Music School, GS battery, NGK spark plug, Riken piston ring, Mahle filter system, Chita springs, Exedy clutch, Kayaba shock absorber, Nittan engine valve, Bosch brake system, JCB construction machinery, CompAir air compressor, Graco industrial painting system, Nissan forklift and industrial products, Siam @ Siam Design Hotel & Spa, Tropicana Hotel Pattaya, Siam Country Club Pattaya Old Course and Siam Country Club Pattaya Plantation Course. Each one of these brands is connected to people’s daily lives in one way or another and is well recognised for high quality and reliability, locally and globally.

In his early childhood days, Dr. Thaworn assisted his parents during the day in running their used goods shop – Tan Thong Huat – at Chiang Khong in Samphanthawong district in Bangkok (now called ‘Yawaraj’), while studying at a night school. At the age of 20, he became the manager of the shop and eventually transformed it into a business selling brand new goods. Following World War II, Thailand experienced economic transformation in which a variety of potential investment projects were mulled over. As the business grew, he travelled to Japan and other countries in Asia to explore new opportunities. The rock-solid determination and undying spirit of the young entrepreneur paid off as he secured his business contract to represent Nissan Motors as the official distributor of its automobiles in Thailand.

Siam Motors Group has focused its business interests in joint venture partnerships. The company is one of Thailand’s first business organisations to form joint ventures with various world-leading multinational conglomerates, mainly from Japan, which reflects its combined Japanese and Thai-style business operation called ‘Cocktail Management’.

On September 4, 1952, with a newly constructed 4-storey head office opposite the National Stadium in Pathumwan, the young visionary Dr. Thaworn founded Siam Motors Co., Ltd. for the purpose of trading new and used vehicles and shortly after, the company became the first overseas distributor of Nissan vehicles. A decade later, Siam Motors & Nissan Co., Ltd., the first Japanese automobile assembly plant in Thailand, was established in Sukhumvit Soi 67, employing 120 staff and an initial production capacity of four cars per day.

With a strong foundation and the acumen and vision of succeeding management coupled with a diligent workforce,

The company subsequently expanded its business and relocated to a new production base, Siam Motors

how the flagship company has evolved from a start-up to a conglomerate in a span of 60 years. The year 1952 marked the beginning of a golden era for Siam Motors and equally for Thailand with Nissan shipping to the Kingdom their first vehicle in the world meant for export!

the company has weathered many critical crises. From an initial family business with a few staff, Siam Motors Group has developed into a major manufacturing concern, producing a wide range of world-class products, offering operational and philosophical excellence, which it combines with trust and a caring concern for all its customers.

“It was quite unusual at that time,” says Dr. Phornthep, “there was no guarantee or a letter of credit. The Japanese automaker simply exported their vehicle to Thailand and to Dr. Thaworn based on just one phrase - ‘trust each other’. Similarly, 1955 marked another milestone for Siam Motors as we signed the contract with Komatsu Heavy Equipment. Incidentally, we imported the first machine from Komatsu to Thailand after the World War II. The following year, the company struck a deal with Yamaha Motorcycles. Thus, it was Nissan and not Toyota or Isuzu that first rolled into Thailand. Likewise, it was not Honda but Yamaha motorbike that first sped its way through on Thai roads. And the credit obviously should go to Dr. Thaworn.”

Siam Motors was awarded the Royal Garuda Emblem by His Majesty the King on June 19, 1972. This emblem is meant to certify that Siam Motors is recognized for honesty in business and for bringing prosperity to the nation. The executives and staff of Siam Motors acknowledged the honour and pride they felt by receiving the Royal favour and vowed to cherish their ideals with gratitude as long as they live. As Siam Motors Group has continued expansion of its business operations over the years, its headquarters too grew in size into what it is today - a 19-storey building with modern facilities and amenities.

In 1982, H.I.M. the Emperor of Japan bestowed upon Dr. Thaworn the Order of Dr. Phornthep Phornprapha the Rising Sun (Second Class) in recognition By helping to develop Thailand’s of his outstanding achievements as the Japanese industrial automobile industry, Siam Motors has earned the pride of pioneer in Thailand and in honour of his notable contributhe entire nation. tions towards establishing and enhancing bilateral trade relations. September 2011

In September 2012, as many as 18,000 people working for 50 companies under the umbrella of Siam Motors will be celebrating 60 years of prosperity inherited from the legendar y Dr. Thaworn.

A triple doctorate who likes to keep a low profile image in spite of being the top boss of as many as 50 corporate entities, Dr. Phornthep recalled some unforgettable moments that he had spent with his visionary father and teacher, while learning the lessons of life and the nuances of business, especially how to do business with the Japanese. “My Dad was an embodiment of innovative ideas. He used to think at least 20 years ahead of his time. A self-made genius with extraordinary talent and skills, he always used to create business ideas - no matter whether he was at office or home or enjoying a holiday somewhere.”

The Dr. Thaworn Phornprapha Museum was set up to commemorate the iconic life of Dr. Thaworn, who had his personal office on the 19th floor of the Siam Motors building while serving as the Honorary Chairman of Siam Motors. His personal office consisted of his own work space, room for Buddha, meeting room, reception room for guests, dining hall and a private chamber.

Dr. Thaworn saw opportunities to do business everywhere he went and with everyone he met. “Who could expect 40 years back that Daikin airconditioning would become such a big business as of today? My father predicted that it would be successful in a not so distant future. He told me that Thailand was getting hotter and hotter year after year due to which the need for air-conditioners would arise and their demand would constantly increase. Such was his penchant for business. It’s just because he has a good nose for new ideas, our group (Siam Motors Group) has expanded into diverse businesses as you can see today”, observes Dr. Phornthep.

After Dr. Thaworn left for heavenly abode on 7 July 2001, the entire 19th floor has been converted into a museum by Dr. Phornthep displaying Dr. Thaworn’s Royal decorations, personal belongings such as wrist watches, spectacles, pens, passports, identity cards, gift articles presented by VIP guests, memorabilia from his wedding and souvenirs that he collected/received during his travel in Thailand and abroad. Dr. Thaworn was an extraordinary man obsessed with even minute details of the objects that he had collected during his life time. “Normally, people throw away their worn out spectacles or other items of daily use. But Dr. Thaworn was different. He kept every pair of his used eye glasses intact. So he did with his passports, pens, diaries and other items.

“Important things that I learnt from my father were how to be honest with our business partners and earn their respect, how to foresee the future and keep pace with the changing trends and, most importantly, how to help our employees excel in their career and become an invaluable asset to the company. ‘Honesty’, ‘ability’ and ‘diligence’ were his words of wisdom that every executive and employee of the Siam Motors Group continues to follow even today,” he adds.

If you take a look at his enormous collection, you will only be left in awe! Collecting thousands of objects, bringing them home and maintaining them in top-notch condition itself might look like a Herculean task for others but not for Dr. Thaworn. As if this was not enough, he even labeled almost every gift item that he had received. You can see at the back of many objects the name of the person who presented them and the date of their receipt. Such was his attention to detail,” explains Dr. Phornthep. The museum was officially opened on 2 April 2002. Notables among the items on display are the Royal Insignia presented to him by H.M. the King of Thailand,

The Hall of Fame houses the replicas of his family’s used goods shop Tan Thong Huat, Siam Motors office building and Dr. Thaworn’s personal office-cum-library as well as the first car assembled in Thailand and the first bulldozer imported to the Kingdom. The museum contains several exhibits, pictures and artifacts, actual and simulated.

the Order of the Rising Sun and several decorative objects made of precious metals, ivory, wood, porcelain and soapstone (steatite). The museum is probably one of a kind in Thailand considering the countless number of extraordinary exhibits displayed there. Visitors to this unique place are welcomed by a panoramic painting displayed at the entrance atop a short flight of steps from the 18th floor.

Another part of the building has been set aside as a seminar or conference room capable of seating 150 persons, together with a dining room. There is also an outdoor amphitheatre with stage that can seat 200 persons.

The massive work of art, in fact, is a pictorial of 21 paintings (laid out on the next two pages with photo captions) sketched by Khun Phisit Jiropass in 1976 at the instance of Dr. Thaworn depicting his origin, migration of his family from a riverside village in China to Bangkok, his early days of life, establishment of Siam Motors, Siam Motors Industrial Centre and Siam Country Club in Pattaya.

At the age of 85 years, the all-in-one visionary, entrepreneur, industrialist and humanitarian passed away. Ever since, the artifacts collected by him over years have been put on display at the museum in Bangkok and the Hall of Fame in Pattaya. “The museums will be there forever for everyone to see, understand and appreciate the life, thoughts, ideals and achievements of Dr. Thaworn,” concludes Dr. Phornthep.

Dr. Thaworn’s personal belongings as well as the rooms and other spaces used by him, including his private chamber, bedroom with slippers at the bedside and rest room with towels and toiletries, are kept in immaculate condition creating an impression that he still lives there!

Although Dr. Thaworn is physically not present, he very much lives in the minds of every employee and executive of Siam Motors Group, every member of the Phornprapha family and innumerable members of the society at large.

There’s also another museum, a substantially larger one, on the premises of Dr. Thaworn Phornprapha Hall of Fame located near Siam Country Club in Pattaya next to his memorial where his mortal remains rest in peace. With modern Thai architecture and 1,000 sq m of interior space, the Hall of Fame was officially opened on 25 February 1997. His Royal Highness Crown Prince Maha Vajiralongkorn graciously presided over the opening ceremony.

A person who is greatly admired, his simple words of knowledge have become ‘pearls’ of wisdom for the next generation to treasure, his simple ideas have become ‘golden’ guidelines to follow and build upon, his simple practices have become prized ‘gems’ of prosperity to cherish and his simple verses of caution have become ‘invaluable’ commandments of life for his successors to honour and obey, raising his rank to more than a human and close to a deity - a ‘demigod’.

The purpose of the exhibition is to record matters related to Dr. Thaworn, his life, his principle of work, a brief summary of developments in the automobile industry and nearly six decades of industrial development in Thailand.

Thus became immortal the icon of Thai automobile industry who had put the Kingdom on wheels – the wheels of advancement, growth, happiness and well-being!

Later on, I commenced Nissan-Datsun Automobile business and several other businesses and because I always made merit and did good things, His Majesty the King granted me the Royal patronage. I also thought that after I had made money from my businesses, I should help the society and thus established the Thaworn–Usa Foundation.

The reason to have this painting is because I would like the next generation to briefly know about my past, present and future so that they remember that any achievements that have come in were dependent on several factors. I would like the people who are managing businesses under our company to understand clearly my guidelines which I set down in order that those of us who have the same ideology will be able help each other to develop and progress further for the honour and reputation of the our family, company and the country. Remember that whatever profession we are engaged in, if we are righteous and have honesty, ability, diligence and patience we will achieve nothing but SUCCESS! 1

Titleist Brand Ambassador Webb Simpson Wins Deutsche Bank Championship in an all-PRO V1x Playoff

T

TITLEIST TOPS IN PGA TOUR EQUIPMENT WINS: Simpson’s win increases the Titleist victory count on the PGA TOUR across every major equipment category, including golf balls (26), drivers (15), irons (15) and wedges (19). Titleist is also the top choice among champions in the putter category, with 16.

itleist Brand Ambassador Webb Simpson closed with three consecutive birdies to capture the Deutsche Bank Championship on the second hole of a sudden death playoff with Chez Reavie. While the champion may have been in doubt when both players returned to the 18th hole for the start of the playoff, the winning golf ball was not!

SIMPSON’S STATS: The win marked Simpson’s second career PGA TOUR title, and he vaults to first place in the FedExCup standings with two PGA TOUR Playoffs events remaining. The 26-year old earned his first PGA TOUR title at the Wyndham Championship just two weeks ago.

Simpson and Reavie each fired four consecutive rounds in the 60’s to finish regulation at 15-under 269 with the Pro V1x golf ball. Simpson’s closing six-under 65 was the best round of the final day. World No. 1 and fellow Pro V1x golf ball loyalist Luke Donald was among three players who tied for third place, two shots out of the playoff.

Simpson has relied upon his Titleist equipment to be among the most consistent players on the 2011 PGA TOUR. He has participated in 22 events, made 19 cuts, and posted 17 top 25 finishes, including nine top 10s. This was his second playoff of the season, having lost to fellow Pro V1x player Bubba Watson at the Zurich Classic of New Orleans. The win also assured Simpson a roster spot on The Presidents Cup team in Australia, and moves to No. 14 in the Official World Golf Ranking.

WHAT’S IN THE BAG?: In addition to the Pro V1x golf ball, Simpson’s winning bag includes the Titleist 909D3 driver (10.5), 910F fairway metals (13.5, 17), 910H hybrid (21), 680 irons (4-P) and Vokey Design sand (54) and lob (58) wedges.

BY THE NUMBERS: Titleist was the overwhelming golf ball of choice at the Deutsche Bank Championship with 62 players, nearly five times the nearest competitor with 13. Titleist also was first in iron sets (34), including 16 sets of new 712 prototype irons (3 AP2, 8 MB, and 5 CB sets in play); sand, lob and approach wedges (96); and putters (39). Titleist was second in drivers (32), including 29 910D2 or 910D3 models; and fairway metals (36).

First Ever iPad App. Revolutionizes Nutrition, Lifestyle for BNH Hospital Patients

B

NH Hospital, Bangkok Thailand, in association with catering service provider Sodexo (Thailand) Company Limited, is introducing a brand new application for its patients to order food using an iPad for its Inpatient Department (IPD). This innovative and exciting new technology is called Touch2Order and is the first of its kind in Thailand to be used for both nutritional and lifestyle purposes.

of their lifestyle and health. This means that we can continue caring for our patients and continue providing an excellent service,” he added. Sodexo (Thailand) CEO Mr. Stuart Winters said: “We want patients to feel part of the selection process. Touch2Order is a real time saving system as the information is sent directly to the kitchen and orders are taken immediately. The nutritionist then has enough time to assess the details and suggest a suitable meal. Furthermore ordering using iPad also cuts costs and in the future Sodexho will develop the software further by connecting Touch2Order with the infotainment system in the hospital to both access information and develop the services provided.”

As a result, patients will have access to nutritional information and menus which will match their health needs all at the touch of a button which makes it fast, efficient and user friendly. Touch2Order will also be able to display both nutritional content and record personal information for increased customer satisfaction.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Pongtorn Kietdumrongwong, Medical Consultant of LIFE and Nutritionist Physician, felt: “Doctors should study more regarding Food and Nutrition for the Inpatient Department (IPD), how much they should consume, total nutrition received, the proper consumption behavior, which food should be eaten or avoided while having an illness, which food is need for our body, and tips for eating healthily depending on their lifestyles. You have to remember to eat in moderation and of course you can enjoy food but should also exercise to maintain healthy lifestyles.”

“We joined forces with Sodexo (Thailand) because we wanted to be the first hospital to provide such a cutting edge service for our patients”, said BNH Hospital Director Dr. Noppadol Noppakun. “By using this kind of Web based Software to take orders, we are able to not only catering to patients nutritional needs but also keep individual records regarding their preferences, medical history and suitable menus so that we can keep track

Finest Home Linens from Frette

L

ong established as the leading producer of finest home linens, Frette has earned reputation for elegant design, technical innovation and quality in craftsmanship that remains unrivalled even today and, perhaps, many years to come

Grotto Collection The wunderkammer theme first appears in Grotto, inspired by the shell collections and shell-studded follies built in the gardens of Frette’s first noble customers. An eye-catching “placed” design, named Shells, is the showpiece - with seaweed strands and Nautilus conches fanning out from an oyster-inspired central motif. Appearing on bed covers and quilts, the ornate design is tempered with subtle sea-inspired colourways on yarn-dyed cotton. The collection continues with Sundials, featuring spiralling Nautilus conches; and Sea Urchins, a geometric which takes up the creatures’ dotted star design. Angaria, an elaborate, all-over pattern completes the line, combining sea urchins and cockle shells with seaweed fronds. The Sundials design additionally features in swirling, macramé lace; while Angaria is embroidered across bed sets, quilts and towels. Seainfluenced colours are foam white, mother-of-pearl, sea-shell pink, oyster grey and wet sand. Fossil Collection Fossil is the name of the second Couture range, in which fossilised sea creatures and plants inspire surprisingly contemporary geometric designs. Crinoide plays with the tiny rectangles on the fronds of an anemone-like fossil, recalling the pen-and-ink etchings of 19th century scientific illustrations. Strikingly modern, Pereneire takes tiny geometric elements to create a swirling design which resembles reptile skins. Pereneire reappears on embroidered borders, where tiny rectangles create a hatched effect; while Tracce reproduces fossil-influenced geometrics on embroidered quilts. Inspired by minerals, colours include rose quartz, seawater, flint gray, white and ivory. Secret Garden Collection Completing the Couture collection is Secret Garden inspired by 19th Century botanical drawings, plant-hunters, exotic hothouses - and the eponymous 1909 novel by Frances Hodgson Burnett. The line centres on Erbarium, evoking a tropical greenhouse with a foliage-rich pattern of ferns, leaves and sprays. Calathé takes up the delicate traceries of skeleton leaves; while Euphorbia adds modernity in geometric interpretations of textured tree bark. Erbarium’s leaves and fronds are etched in romantic macramé lace, while Aureola features embroidered leaf designs in white on subtly-coloured quilts. Springlike colours are tender shoot green, pale yellow, silver-grey bark, white and ivory. Available at: Central Chidlom, 5th Fl. here isn’t much time during a golf swing to think about too much because it all happens in about 2 seconds with the downswing taking only about half a second. I use what I call ‘one word cues’ to help me get into various positions of the swing.

‘Shift’, ‘drop’ and ‘pull’, which make the title of this article, are the three words I like to use to help me start the downswing and get into a good pre-impact position.

Bill Hutton, who turned professional in 1983, is a ‘Class A’ member of the Professional Golfers’ Association of USA. He has been the Director of Junior Golf at the Royal Bangkok Sports Club for the last 10 years. Formerly, he was the Head Pro at the Winsan Golf Club (now known as Legacy Golf Club).

The common fault in most downswings is they start with the right shoulder moving out and round to the ball which leads to an outside to inside club path. This is, of course, the leading cause of a slice.

Bill appeared on Kong Fak Nak Golf, a programme telecast every midnight on TV Channel 3 for over eight years. He gave more than 1,500 golf tips through the programme during 1997-2005.

To hit a ball with power, the club must be coming at the ball a little from the inside. The only way to do that is you MUST start the downswing by shifting your weight onto your left leg (usually by moving the hips). So I simply think of that one keyword.....SHIFT! As my hands begin to get to the top m\of my backswing, I tell my brain, SHIFT (with the hips). This movement of my weight from my right leg to my left leg actually helps the next move.....the DROP!

My Club is almost at the top of my backswing. This is when you want to think of the word ‘SHIFT’

September 2011

Here you see I have ‘pulled’ As my arms are ‘dropping’ the handle towards the target straight down, here you want creating an excellent preto begin thinking of ‘PULL’ impact position

Here you can see my weight has ‘shifted’ onto my left leg. Now I want my arms to ‘DROP’ The DROP is the movement of your arms and the clubhead falling straight down. This is a MUST if you want to hit the ball with your clubhead coming from the inside. As you drop your arms, check and make sure you still have a 90 degree angle between your arms and the club shaft. You don’t want to be uncocking your wrists yet.

You don’t want to have the clubhead in this position on your downswing. The clubhead is moving outside. There was no ‘dropping’ of the arms. This clubhead will be coming across the ball leading to a slice

Then you simply release all that power down and through the ball by extending both arms fully like you see here PULL also helps to keep the clubhead on an inside path to the ball. You want to feel your hands pulling and pointing the handle of the club towards the target. As you do this, check and make sure your right elbow is tight to your body. Only then is the time to uncock your wrists just before the impact. If you have successfully done with all of these three one-word clues – SHIFT, DROP and PULL – you are in a perfect preimpact position and ready to hit the ball with precision and power.

And you also want to make sure your right arm is still bent at the elbow. The third and final word to think about is.....PULL! This is a very important word that helps to retain the power for one last nanosecond before the strike of the ball.

So just remember the three little words - SHIFT..... DROP.....PULL - that will make a BIG difference on your downswing!

uang Prabang is an ancient city north of the capital of Laos - Vientiane. Situated at the junction of the Khan and Mekong rivers, this location boasts some 60 well-preserved temples, some dating back as far as the 14th Century. The Laotian city offers an abundance of pristine, natural scenery, such as waterfalls and caves, the likes of which are unparalleled in Southeast Asia.

century, and was twice home to the religious symbol of the kingdom, the prabang, from 1504-1715, and from 18661874. In addition, Wat Visoun houses the That Makmo, a giant stupa from the 16th century. The National Museum Constructed during the reign of King Sisawangwong in the early 20th century, this building originally served as the royal palace. Among other things, this museum contains the Royal throne of the Lan Xang kingdom, and is located on the scenic bank of the Mekong River.

Unlike its neighbours, Laos is a country that has been relatively isolated from western culture, and only recently has become open to tourists. As a result, Laos offers a unique glimpse of traditional life in Southeast Asia, and is considered by some travelers as the place to go in the region.

Kuang Si Waterfall This spectacular waterfall, set deep in the forest, is one of the most picturesque locations in or around Luang Prabang. Set 18 miles south of Luang Prabang, Kuang Si is a must for nature lovers, and offers a great place to relax.

The primary tourist attraction in Laos, Luang Prabang is a city rich in culture and history. Originally called Muang Swa, this ancient city was founded during the 8th century, and named after King Kuhn Xua. Luang Prabang served as the capital of the Lan Xang kingdom from 1354-1560, when the capital was relocated to Vientiane.

Pak Ou Caves The Pak Ou Caves are located upstream from Luang Prabang, and can be reached by a two-hour boat ride. Apart from their natural beauty, these caves are home to dozens of Buddha images from different time periods.

Renowned as the center of Laotian culture, Luang Prabang is home to dozens of well-preserved temples, and an abundance of spectacular caves and waterfalls.

OTHER THINGS TO DO After a day among the wats and the museum, a gentle climb up Phu Si Hill to enjoy the sunset and the spectacular view of the town and river, is a delight. A boat cruise on the Mekong, or hiking to the abandoned Wats and caves on the opposite bank are other attractions. For the more active and adventurous, cycling and rafting are exciting possibilities!

WHAT TO SEE Although there is an abundance of things to see and do in and around Luang Prabang, the following are some of the more popular attractions. Wat Xieng Thong King Sai Setthathirath constructed this beautiful temple, situated at the junction of the Mekong and Khan rivers, in the mid-16th century. By far the most beautiful of the Luang Prabang temples, Wat Xiengthong is an excellent example of traditional Laotian architectural style, and contains a wide variety of religious artifacts from the 16th through 20th centuries.

Asia’s boutique airline, Bangkok Airways flies direct to Luang Prabang twice daily at 0915 hrs (Flight PG 941) and at 1330 hrs (Flight PG945) with the flight time being 1 hour 45 min. The second flight will start from 30 October 2011 until 25 March 2012.

Wat Visoun This temple was built by King Visounarat in the early 16th

Porsche Panamera Turbo S elegant, spacious and stylish

Exceptional, Elegant, Excellent, Exact. In a word: Exclusive.

Porsche Panamera is more than just a car. It is also an expression of the personal freedom of its driver, and of their very own taste and lifestyle. It offers an excellent combination of performance, comfort, exibility and personal freedom.

T

he new Panamera. Four doors. Four seats. This car challenges the conventions of premium class sedans, and offers more than just mundane, soft seats. With the new Panamera Turbo S, Porsche has combined ultra high performance and efficiency, sports-car-like driving dynamics, and first-class comfort in just one car. Under the hood Porsche has placed a 4.8 liter, V8 biturbo engine that delivers an impressive 550 HP, a 50 HP improvement over the previous Turbo version. This is more than enough power to sprint the car from 0 to 60 mph in 3.6 seconds and hit a top speed of 190 mph. You get all of this while receiving a fuel economy of 23 mph (highway). Customers will distinguish the new Turbo S over a standard Turbo model thanks to the addition of new 20-inch Turbo II wheels with increased rear axle track width, side skirts from the Porsche exclusive range, and the adaptive extending four-way rear spoiler matching the exterior color. The new model will also be equipped with Porsche Dynamic Chassis Control (PDCC), an active roll stabilization system, Porsche Torque Vectoring Plus (PTV Plus) and speed-dependent Servotronic. There is also a Sport Chrono Package Turbo, which tunes the suspension and power unit, making them even sportier by pressing the additional “Sport Plus” button. Initially the car does not deploy all its horsepower and torque to the rear wheels and waits for the driver to push this button before letting loose. Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM) varies damper forces in an infinite process and adjusts the dampers to road conditions and the driver’s style of motoring. Incorporating adaptively controlled dampers with infinite adjustment of damper forces, PASM allows the driver, through the PASM button on the center console, to choose among three control maps – Comfort, Sport and Sport Plus. In Comfort mode, the driver enjoys all the smoothness and motoring comfort of a grand touring sedan. Sport Plus thrills with the performance and agility of a full-fledged Porsche sports car.

In other words, luxury needn’t mean cumbersome. Let’s call it “dynamic luxury.” It’s about journeys, in a sports car for four. It isn’t about the destination, but how you get there. It’s about the pure driving experience, regardless of whether you sit in the front or the back.

A ‘VUE’ TO A KILL! Bangkok’s Hottest Spot for Your Souls to Fill with Ecstatic Chill ‘n’ Never-Ending Thrill!!

- By Jarupat Sukontawat

September 2011

G

After all, these exclusive creations of varied hues and textures have brought name and fame to Hansar making ‘VUE’ the buzz word, both locally and across frontiers.

oing by the headline of this story, you may mistake this for a review of ‘A View to A Kill’, Ian Fleming’s 14th spy film of the James Bond series. But no… It isn’t. It’s about ‘VUE’ – the bar at Hansar Hotel that has become Bangkok’s hottest spot for people looking for ways to kill their hunger for nightly fun and entertainment and fill their souls with ecstatic chill ‘n’ never-ending chill!

However, if you find yourself still a few paces short of the pinnacle of happiness in spite of tasting these cocktails, in all probability, you have missed something very special... In fact, it is the ‘queen’ of all - VUE Ice Tea - a magical blend of gin, rum and vodka spiced with the famous French orange liqueur Cointreau and peach liquor. With disguised looks resembling iced lemonade, its sharp taste will send shock waves across your anatomy on the first sip and give you enough torque to climb up and reach the top in no time!

As the sun sets, Hansar Bangkok’s lobby comes alive with the natural buzz of the city’s most happening place – VUE (pronounced as ‘wooh’ in French which means ‘sight’ or ‘something seen’) - where guests can relax in a nice setting and enjoy the views, be seen, or just catch an ever-changing glimpse of the crowd through the floor-to-ceiling mirrors and glass that line the grand staircase.

Among the VUE Bar snacks, Hansar Garlic Fries with parmesan cheese and Trio Snack (Chicken satays, prawn spring rolls and curly fries) make the perfect combination with whatever cocktails you order. Those who like Thai snacks will be delighted to savour crispy Tung Thong (Deep fried golden sachets with sweet chili sauce) and Poh Pia Thord (Deep fried spring rolls with plum sauce).

The VUE Bar, which is situated in a surprisingly quiet location off the bustling Rajdamri Road in Soi Mahadlekluang 2, keeps its fun-hungry guests on cloud nine with colourful cocktails, sizzling spirits, wonderful wines, brilliant beers, so-good-totaste snacks and mind-soothing music in line with the hotel’s motto – ‘Making guests happy’ (‘Hansar’ means ‘happiness’).

As darkness envelopes the outside world, the moments of real fun start indoors! While enjoying the ‘shots’ of happiness, you will be entertained by nightly live music. If you happen to be at VUE on a Monday evening, you will love to listen to the former GMM Grammy pop stars Seksun (‘Oh’) Panprateep and Chaichat (‘Chat’) Srisupawattana singing super hits from their own albums as well as Western classics, pop and jazz numbers that topped music charts from the 60s through to 90s such as Quando, quando, quando and It has to be you.

Begin your journey to explore the mystic world of VUE with one or two shots of the Classics like Bloody Mary, Blue Hawaii, Sex on the Beach and Mojito. But don’t rush to jump to the sizzling spirits, the finest whiskies (blended malts and singles) or the wonderful wines no matter how much they entice you. For, you will wind up your exploration half way and return to the material world soon without reaching the euphoric summit.

VUE offers an extensive wines list as well comprising new world and old world wines with vintages range from 1951 to 2009. The Sommelier recommended wines include Prosecco Brut “Zonin” sparkling wine, De Castellane Champagne, 2000 Dom Pérignon (Champagne Cuvee d’exception), 2007 Louis Latour Macon Village Chameroy (Burgundy), 2008 Sancerre ‘Clos de Chadenay “AOC” Etienne Daulny’ (Loire), 2008 Palliser Sauvignon Blanc (New Zealand), 2008 Pinot Noir d’Alsace Reserve (Alsace), 2009 Anakena Cabernet Sauvignon (Chile) and 2008 Peter Lehmann (Weighbridge) Shiraz. Also,

So hang on...Fill the evening for an eternal bliss and lasting fun with VUE Signature Cocktails such as Hansar Sunset, Smooth Climax, Red River, Hansar Martini and Golden Dream. A couple of these cocktails are enough to take you ‘almost’ there!

Get Your Confidence and Hearty Smiles Back..!

D

What are the advantages of a dental implant? Dental Implant offers a secure base for the replacement tooth as it integrated to the jawbone. Your smile can be restored with the look and feel of a natural tooth. Other benefits are improved appearance and self-esteem, enhanced comfort and speech, better eating and enjoying more nutritious foods.

ental implants are so naturallooking that you may even forget you have ever lost a tooth! You know that your confidence about your teeth affects how you feel about yourself, both personally and professionally. Perhaps you hide your smile because of spaces from missing teeth. May be your dentures don’t feel secure. Perhaps you have difficulty in chewing. If you are missing one or more teeth and would like to smile, speak and eat again with comfort and confidence, here is some very GOOD NEWS!

How is a dental implant superior to a denture? The gum tissue is never meant to support the biting force of the mouth; that is the role of the dental root. If a tooth is missing it is better to replace it with the one that has an artificial root such as an implant rather than denture or plate that simply rests on the gum. A dental implant can help support and retain replacement tooth better than the conventional denture. With a dental implant, which doesn’t need support from the neighbouring teeth or gum tissue unlike a denture, the patient will be more comfortable and confident. Does a dental implant need extra care? Healthy gums and teeth are necessary for supporting dental implants. Commitment to meticulous oral hygiene routine, including regular brushing , flossing and periodical checks by your dentist protects the supporting tissue.

Dental implants are teeth that can look and feel just like your own! Under proper conditions and diligent maintenance, implants may last a lifetime!

Can growing children undergo a dental implant? Healthy gums and teeth are necessary for supporting dental implants. Commitment to meticulous oral hygiene routine, including regular brushing , flossing and periodical checks by your dentist protects the supporting tissue

But what are the benefits of dental implants? Are they painful? Are dental implants recommended for particular age group, persons with specific conditions or anyone? To find out answers to these and know more about dental implants, RBSC ELITE met Dr. Chanavut Asvanund, a prosthodontist at the BNH Dental Centre, BNH Hospital. Excerpts:

It is beyond doubt that dental implants are a great value for your investment because you will be using them 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 52 weeks of the year and probably for many years to come.

What is a dental implant and how it is done? A dental implant is a metal post which is surgically placed in the jaw under the gum. The implant sits firmly in the jaw as the bone grows around it in the healing process. The replacement tooth or crown is then attached to the metal post, giving you the restoration that is a lot like your natural tooth. Implants can help secure bridges and dentures as well if more than one tooth is missing. Who is a candidate for a dental implant? Dental implant is a better option for people in good general oral health who have lost a tooth or teeth. A good candidate for dental implants should have adequate bone in their jaws. A healthy gum tissues that are free of periodontal disease is required prior to the implant placement. If the patient has uncontrolled blood pressure, immunosuppressant or bleeding disorders implant surgery can’t be performed. Likewise, uncontrolled diabetes or heavy smoking would affect the success of a dental implant.

Most importantly, the implants bring your lost confidence and hearty smiles back to stay with you as long as you live!

Money Matters

How to Choose Your Financial Planner Who can save your time and help achieve your financial success

F

inancial planners advise clients on how best to save, invest, and grow their money. They can help you tackle a specific financial goal — such as readying yourself to buy a house — or give you a macro view of your money and the interplay of your various assets. Some specialize in retirement or estate planning, while some others consult on a range of financial matters. Don’t confuse planners with stockbrokers, the market mavens who trade stocks. Financial planners also DIFFER from accountants who can help you lower your tax bill, insurance agents who might lure you in with complicated life insurance policies and aggressive salesmen who urge you to buy mutual funds. Anyone can hang out a name board as a financial planner, but that doesn’t make that person an expert. They may tack on an alphabet soup of letters after their names, but CFP™ (short for certified financial planner) is the most significant credential. A CFP™ has passed a rigorous test administered by the Certified Financial Planner Board of Standards about the specifics of personal finance. CFPs must also commit to continuing education on financial matters and ethics classes to maintain their designation. The CFP™ credential is a good sign that a prospective planner will give sound financial advice. Still, even those who pass the exam may come up short on skills and credibility. As with all things pertaining to your money, be meticulous in choosing the right planner.

You might also encounter financial planners who cater exclusively to the rich and refuse clients with less than 20 million baht to invest. That shouldn’t be taken personally since hugely successful planners just prefer to deal with big accounts rather than beginner clients. Such top-rated FPs may sometimes welcome into their fold clients with lesser money too, but on a case by case basis. However, what’s important for you is that you want a planner who has the time to focus on your concerns and is interested in growing with you. After all, should you use a Financial Planner? You can certainly go it alone when it comes to managing your money. But you could also try to do it yourself when it comes to auto repair. In both areas, doing it yourself is a brilliant idea for some, and a flawed plan for many, many others. Mastering personal finance requires many hours of research and learning. For most, it’s not worth the time and ongoing effort.

Typically, financial planners earn their living either from commissions or by charging hourly or flat rates for their services. A commission is a fee paid whenever someone buys or sells a stock or makes other investment. A growing number of financial planners make money only when you pay them a fee for their consultation. These independent financial planners don’t get a cut from life insurers or fund companies. You might pay them a flat fee for a financial plan. Or you could pay an annual fee, often 1% of all the assets — investment, retirement, college-savings and other accounts — they’re minding for you. Others charge by the hour, like lawyers.

As you get older, busier and (it is hoped) more wealthy, your financial goals – and options – get more complicated. A financial helper can save you time! Financial planners can also help you remain disciplined about your financial strategies. They’ll make the moves for you or badger you until you make them yourself. Procrastination can cause all sorts of money problems or unrealised potential, so it pays to have someone riding you to stay on track. That doesn’t mean that you ignore personal finance and turn over all your concerns to an adviser. But even if you know the basics, it’s a comfort to know that you have someone keeping watch over your money. It may sound crazy to give someone 1% of your annual assets to manage them, but you get a buffet of advice about almost anything related to personal finance. The price becomes sensible when you consider that you’re paying to establish a comfortable retirement, save for your child’s college, choose the right mortgage when borrowing, invest in a real estate product, etc.
