Captain’s Address

Dear Members, First of all, I would like to congratulate Khun Chawat Arthayukti and Khun Nualchan Pew-On for winning the Mixed Team Competition and also Khun Sathirut Tandanand and Mrs. Cynthia Lebreton for securing the runners-up position. Congratulations also to Khun Tna Dharmajiva, Khun Saeng Meenijacin, Khun Dusadi Chulajata, Mr. Akio Hayashi and Khun Thong Laoboonmee for winning at the Sweet Sixty Tournament. Please read the detail of their victories in this issue of RBSC ELITE. The 140 seniors signed up to participate were even more than last year, a clear evidence of their improved health and the growing popularity of this event. This month has become the most gruesome moment for Thailand as flood waters devastated several provinces and would have already made their presence in Bangkok by the time this magazine is published. Several major rice and crop fields, farms, factories are destroyed, along with businesses and homes. This disaster has inflicted huge losses of properties and livestock and millions of people are feared to have lost their livelihood in addition to the loss of their properties. By the time this issue of RBSC ELITE has gone to print, I would have gone to Hong Kong with our team to play the Interport Match with the Hong Kong Golf Club. This Interport Match in Hong Kong is our most popular trip and almost 60 members signed up to play this time. However, several members have withdrawn since and the team is down to only 30 members. While most withdrew because of the concerns for their properties and families, a few were already suffering the losses. My sympathy goes to everyone who suffered and I pray for everyone’s safety and that the oncoming damages to the inner Bangkok and our facilities will be minimal. Yours sincerely, Chawalit Chanarat RBSC Golf Captain

Captain’s Corner

Dear Members, Everyone in Bangkok and particularly the outskirts and the Central Plains must be living an ongoing nightmare for most of October. As this year’s flood crisis is the worst one in more than five decades, the Ladies’ Golf Sub-Committee has decided to cancel the Captain’s Prizes tournament. This flood crisis will pass soon. I hope those who suffered will recover with minimum damage or loss.

Sweet Sixty Golf Tournament ‘Big Boys’ of RBSC Showcase Unrelenting Fighting Spirit!

S

aturday, the 15th October, saw Sweet Sixty Golf Tournament, taking off on an impressive note at the Royal Bangkok Sports Club as several ‘young’ and energetic golfers in their sixties vied for the victory laurels at the year’s most awaited event.

played the white tees. The players aged 76-80 years started off from the yellows, while the golfers in the Over 80 Years flight competed from the reds. According to the game format, a player who makes a birdie is awarded 3 points. He gets 2 points for making a par and 1 point for a bogey. Any score worse than a bogey is counted as ‘zero’. In spite of being in their late 70’s and early 80’s, many senior golfers displayed their determination and golfing finesse both in the long game and the short game.

The tournament which started as a reunion of long-time friends turned into a fantastic display of unrelenting fighting spirit by the ‘big boys’ of the Sports Club! One of the biggest annual events organised in Stableford Format with no handicap, the competition attracts several senior golfing members to showcase their golfing skills. The tournament attracted over 100 avid golfing members. Until a couple of years back, the participating golfers used to compete under four flights – 60-65 Years, 66-70 Years, 71-75 Years and 76-80 Years. But the competition has become more interesting since last year with the addition of a new flight – Over 80 Years.

Bagging 43 points, Khun Tna Dharmajiva emerged victorious in 60-65 Years flight, while Khun Saeng Meenijacin became the winner with 31 points in 66-70 Years flight. Two-time champion Khun Piyatat Chudhabudhi could not make a hat-trick this time as Khun Dusadi Chulajata clinched the title in 71-75 Years flight with 27 points. The 76-80 Years flight saw a new winner Mr. Akio Hayashi who secured 25 points. One of the senior most golfers of the Sports Club Khun Thong Laoboonmee was the victor in the Over 80 Years flight with 19 points.

The golfers in the first two flights - 60-65 Years and 66-70 Years - played the blue tees and those in 71-75 Years flight

Profile

TARIN

Thanakitamnuay (HCP 7)

Who inspired you to take up golf? My father (Khun Piya Thanakitamnuay) was the first person to take me to the driving range every weekend since I was very young. Nowadays it’s the other way around!

Have you played golf abroad? I have played on a few courses, but nothing fancy. One of my favorites is right next to my college in Worcester, Ma. It’s called Pakachoag. College kids captivated by the beauty of the course love to go there every Sunday morning.

What did you learn from playing golf? I’ve learnt there are many difficult circumstances that I already had and will have to encounter in my life. I just have to remember to embrace and enjoy those moments because they will only make you smarter and stronger. Whichever direction life takes me, I just have to remember to ‘play as it lies’ and just enjoy the ride. Do you have any memorable moments in your golfing life? The first tournament I’ve ever won was at the Thai Country Club. Although it was just a friendly 1-day tournament, but winning made me feel like I have won a million bucks! Have you got a hole-in-one? I got my first and only hole in one on hole #11 at RBSC. This happened when I was about 14-15 years old. I hit a perfect shot with my 5 iron. It took me a while to find my ball because I thought it went over the green. Have you played a round of golf with any PGA pros? The famous golfer that I’ve ever played a round with is Thai pro Prom Meesawat. It was unreal. Who is your favorite professional golfer? Please explain why do you like him/her? Thongchai Jaidee is my favorite pro golfer because he came from the very bottom and climbed up to the very top. I have a lot of respect for him and other self-made men. If you get a chance, which pro golfer you would like to play with? Definitely the young skinny old version of Tiger Woods.

Which golf course in the world you like the most and why? I must say Amata is my most favorite golf course. It is by far the most beautiful, challenging, and one of the most expensive golf courses I’ve ever played in Thailand. What activities are you interested in other than golf? I love to travel, but lately I’ve been so obsessed with golf that I don’t even have time to do anything else. What is your big dream as far as golf is concerned? Win a few tournaments every now and then and hopefully turn pro in the next few years. What is your dream car and why do you like it? Porsche Spyder 1955. It’s timeless! How to Play Better Golf Without Risking Injuries? A Talk with Asst. Prof. Dr. Prawee Sirithienthad of Bangkok Royal Life Anti-Aging Center

G

olf can be fun and relaxing if you do it right. Sadly, instead of enjoying the game and spectacular views, many golfers are frustrated with their game and golf-related injuries. Some of them spend more time in the roughs and around the trees and bushes than on the greens thanks to their miss hits, while others drown their aches and soreness with ice packs, a cocktail of paracetamol and diclofenac, or a couple of hours on a massage bed.

How does proper preparation help prevent injury? As I said earlier, the key proper preparation enhances the ability of an athlete’s body to repair micro-injuries faster, and thereby reduces the chance of accumulation. Once a part of your body starts to underperform, it causes a domino effect. Do golfers need any special preparation? If you are not a serious golfer and are playing for fun once a month, your body should have enough time to repair micro-injuries. But if you play golf more than once a week, then you need extra care. You should check your ability to repair micro-injuries, which is controlled by a group of repairing hormones or anabolic hormones. As we age, the levels of these hormones drop and that’s why our body takes longer to recover. You will notice this effect as you become unable to meet the demands of the game. Also when you exercise your body consumes more nutrients in addition to the quantity it needs to perform your daily routines. Nutrients help your body repair micro-injuries, but if you don’t have enough nutrients, your body takes longer time to repair. Thus, a deficiency of nutrients is another common factor that causes micro-injuries to accumulate. You should check and make sure that your body has proper anabolic hormones levels and enough nutrients. The results will help you set up a program to tune up your hormones and nutritional levels, which not only helps reduce the chance of injury and improve your score, but also helps improve your overall health as well.

Golf is a ballet between techniques and form which requires proper repetitive and coordinated movements among the hips, spine and shoulders. The most common mistake among average players is swinging harder with the golf club without proper technique and form, which often leads to frustration and injuries. Not only will the ball be hit off centre, but a bad swing sometimes causes injuries to muscles, tendons and ligaments. It’s sad, but true! Unfortunately, as we get older we lose joint flexibility and muscle strength, making bad swings occurs more frequently.

“As we age, the levels of these repairing hormones drop and that’s why our body takes longer time to recover which you will notice by yourself that you start to not be able to meet the demands of the game. Checking your hormone levels and fine tune them is the key preparation to improve your score and prevent injuries.”

So to learn about how to tune up our body and play a better game of golf, while at the same time minimizing the chances of injury, RBSC ELITE recently met Asst. Prof. Dr. Prawee Sirithienthad, AABARM, Ph.D. (Sport Medicine), of Bangkok Royal Life Anti-Aging Center. Following are the interview highlights: Is it important for a golfer to prepare his body to meet the physical challenges of the game? If you want to improve your performance in golf or, for that matter, any other sport, you need to prepare your body well, which will not only enhance your game but also prevent injuries from occurring.

“The key is to prepare your body for microinjuries from sport activities by improving your repairing hormone levels and making sure that you have optimum nutrition levels.” What are micro-injuries and how they are caused? People sustain micro-injuries every time they play sports as a result from overuse of the body. As the name suggests, microinjuries are so small that they don’t cause any immediate pain or discomfort. They heal naturally, and this mechanism forces your body to become stronger as a part of the adaptation. However, if you accumulate micro-injuries too fast - faster than the time taken by your body to repair them, the injuries show up. This is how most athletes suffer injuries in sports.

Target Golf

Khun Thavorn’s Way of Overcoming Challenges ‘n’ Hazards at RBSC Course Thavorn Arthachinta (nickname ‘Noi’) is a familiar figure among the golfing members of the Royal Bangkok Sports Club. In his 57 years of golfing in USA and Thailand, he has drilled as many as 6 holes-in-one, three of which he achieved at RBSC. Khun Noi studied and practiced as an engineer for 15 years in the US and returned to Bangkok in 1967 to subsequently establish an engineering consultancy firm. Through his company, he rendered professional services for several World Bank financed government projects until retirement. He was the first Thai to be granted two Professional Engineer (P.E.) licences by Arizona State Board of Technical Registration in Civil Engineering (1965) and Structural Engineering (1967). Khun Noi has been playing golf regularly ever since he joined the Sports Club in 1976. A regular patron of the Air Bar during the Club Nights on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays, Khun Noi is fondly called by his friends as a golfer who loves to ‘swing’, ‘sing’, and ‘Singh’ (‘Singha’ beer)! By virtue of his engineering background and a determination to overcome the course obstacles, Khun Noi has developed an approach to identify and set up predetermined targets on each fairway of the golf course, a technique he calls ‘target golf’. This article is the last of a series featured by RBSC ELITE under the column Target Golf My Way written by Khun Thavorn. Each article covered three holes of the RBSC course and described his own ideas on ‘target golf’ – the way he would plan and play each hole using different combination of clubs to best avoid all hazards! Most importantly, to avoid hitting stray golf balls that harm and cause injuries to fellow golfers playing on adjacent fairways!! Friends.....Did you know that ‘target golf’ contributed to success in a Major golf tournament? It’s often referred to in the betting circle that the 16th, 17th, 18th, are the money holes. Although betting is illegal here but a small friendly bit keep your concentration at the game. For me I’d like to include the 15th as part of the list as well. Why? Yordor, turbo, press, double the bets, increase stakes, double or nothing, and other terminology all start here. The money holes are where the match is won and the money is counted. A golfer with strong, durable, unyielding nerves prevails during the final three holes. We still remember Jean Van de Velde in the 1999 British Open. Jean was playing flawless for the past 3 days bidding to become the first Frenchman to win since 1907. He was leading by 3 strokes when he collapsed during the 18th hole. A double bogie would have won him the Claret Jug, but took a triple and lost in the playoff. Jack Nicklaus charged over the creek on the 15th par 5 for an eagle to set up his last Major win in the 1986 Masters, at the age of 46. The famous tale of the great Gene Sarazen who decided to hit with a 4 wood over the same creek on the 15th at Augusta National some 50 years ago for a double eagle and won. All these and many more amazing stories contribute to the legacy of the final three holes, the real and truly money holes on any golf course. It is a proud accomplishment for the winner but a permanent scar for the looser. The story of the 1999 British Open and Jean Van de Velde lingers on this day in France as well as the world golfing communities. You don’t know of a professional French golfer on tour today. So take a deep breath and get ready for what’s coming. So, for the money holes at RBSC course, I prepare myself by being aware of the surrounding. I look at pin positions on some particular adjacent greens as I pass by. Before starting a big match, I would sneak at the pin position on the 18th green before teeing off, by walking to the first aid nursing station. I tried to look at 17th green from 4th tee box, and likewise at 16th when walking off the 4th green. At 15th green I look from the 11th tee box. These are the most important four holes on the course when you approach the finishing line. I collect all the information surrounding me as much as possible.

Hole #16 (417 yds, par 4)

(The layout is not up to date)

This is my longest par 4 on the course, not only the length but the gusty wind especially in the afternoon. I can reach home in 2, putting for birdie, but only in the winter with the wind behind. Before my tee shot, I prepare to avoid the long grass right side of the fairway and the big pond guarded by trees on the left. When I set up for the tee off, like all golfers, I plan to hit it straight but we know well it does not always happen. So look out for both troubles. Along the right side of the fairway, there is a sprinkler head, my 200 yards marker. The fence line behind the driving range is also my 175 yards marker. I depend on each to gage my distance to the green. I allow 15-20 yards more for the wind. With memory of the pin placement coming off from the 4th green, I plan my approach accordingly. Normally I prefer to be short of the green for fear of bunkers positioned both left and right. The worst spot for my ball to be is under the trees along the right bunker. The branch is low, spread out, making it impossible to pitch the ball over the sand without hitting the limb. This is a low handicap hole so par is a proud score, and bogie is satisfactory.

Hole #17 (164 yds, par 3) The 80 years old tree on the left spreads out branches to shield half of the green. This is an air space hazard you find only at RBSC. Luckily I am shooting against the wind allowing me to tee up and hit it high above the branch. With wind blowing to my face, the ball will stop in the air and fall by gravity. Other golfers use a different alternative by hitting low under the branches but strong enough to run onto the green. To look out for here are the left and right bunkers guarding the long narrow upslope putting surface. A large deep sand trap is hidden behind if you overshoot the green. The thick Malaysia grass covering the area is to be particularly careful to pitch the ball.

PAR 4 PAR 4

One delightful day playing with my best buddy, I witnessed the most amazing golf shot by him. Teeing off with a 3 wood, the ball hit the hanging tree branch, bounced off on to the green and ran into the cup for a hole in one. I’d say it’s one in a million but we all cerebrated the occasion anyway. I would like to have an ace like that to talk about it forever, rather than just an average normal hole in one.

Hole #18 (377 yds, par 4) My request to all golfers before you tee off here is to be courteous to the ones walking off the men’s 4th tee and the ladies teeing off. Although you have the right of way, it takes only 30 seconds for them to cross, to be out of your way. Please, you can slow down just for 30 or even 45 seconds. Then you can concentrate on the most important golf shot on your finishing money hole. When you worry, you loose your concentration on the drive, may top the ball into the pond, or slice it to the fence or hook it to the long left side trap. This would be sad, for if you’re kind, the good deed will help the ball to go straight and far, making your approach easier indeed. For me I’d stay away from the above and try to be in the middle of the fairway. The O.B. sign hanging on the fence is my 150 yards marker. For the next shot though, I would tell myself that the green is slightly elevated I cannot be short and jump up. I have to land on the green but beware of the wind behind, that I may overshoot into the water. It is the last of the money holes, your game ends here. So be very thoughtful, careful, but confident. Concentrate, go for the flag, the outcome is forever rewarding.

(The layout is not up to date)

In conclusion: We now have come to the end of this Golf Article. I would like to say goodbye with words from Greg Norman which I always remember: When Greg was asked during a television interview “what was your most happy moment in golf?” He said – to paraphrase - “you know I’d have to say, when I was in the final pairing, walking on the 18th fairway, already a hundred yards from the green, but with a putter in my hand, knowing that I was leading by two strokes. That would be my happiest moment in golf ”. So, my fellow Golfer, after all this ………. are you walking toward the 18th green with a putter in your hand, knowing you’re 2up on your buddy? Thanks everyone for reading this article. So long!!

Bringing the Very Best Golf Gadgets to Your Easy Reach A Talk with RBSC Golf Pro Shop (Kato Golf) MD Khun Phanit Kyosakorn

T

he RBSC Golf Pro Shop, which is now operated by Kato Golf (Thailand) Co., Ltd, has drawn up impressive plans to bring only the very best golf gadgets and other equipment to the easy reach of the Sports Club members and their visiting friends. While stocking extensive ranges of golf clubs, balls, gloves, shirts, shoes and other accessories of world’s leading brands such as Titleist, FootJoy, Callaway and Nike, the pro shop is also offering off-site club repair and grip changing services at no extra cost. Kato Golf has sprung from humble beginnings more than 30 years ago when a Japanese pro golfer Mr. Akio Kato started teaching Japanese expatriates settled in Bangkok how to play better golf at the old IBM Building in Soi Patpong. What Mr. Kato established as a small golf school for a few members soon grew into a full-fledged golf academy with a pro shop offering club fitting and other customised services. Eventually, Kato Golf moved to a new location in close proximity to a driving range in Sukhumvit Soi 18 to accommodate the growing number of golf enthusiasts. Ten years back, Kato Golf metamorphosed into a pro shop offering golf clubs and accessories of various brands and relocated to Thaniya Plaza on Silom Road. The company has also set up pro shops at Lakewood Country Club (Samutprakarn) and Royal Golf & Country Club (Lad Krabang).

48

October - November 2011

Following the death of Mr. Kato four year ago, his legal heirs in Japan handed over the management of the shop to Kato Golf’s most trusted senior executive Khun Phanit Kyosakorn. After Khun Phanit took over as the Managing Director of Kato Golf, she continued to build upon the ideals of Mr. Kato – offer quality products at reasonable prices and achieve customer satisfaction through excellence in service - and saw the company gain steady progress and make an impressive mark on the ever expanding Thai golf market. RBSC ELITE met Khun Phanit to know more about Kato Golf’s pricing policy and the exclusive services offered to RBSC members at the Pro Shop. “It has been our policy since the very beginning to offer products at the most reasonable prices. Recently, a member expressed shock after knowing the price of a product at our pro shop to be 2,100 baht. He said he had brought the same product for 4,500 baht at another pro shop in Bang-Na. Unlike others, we don’t mark up prices and offer ‘special discounts’ to lure customers and get more business. We have good knowledge of the market prices for various products. We never sell any product above its suggested retail price in the market,” explained Khun Phanit. Asked about what RBSC members can expect from the pro shop, Khun Phanit said our strengths are reasonable prices and excellent service. We understand that satisfying our customers with our service while providing respect, friendliness and care creates goodwill of our business. We will strive to make the retail experience of our customers a delight by exceeding both their needs and expectations, by providing them with the most reliable and up to date information on our products and by offering a superior level of service. Khun Phanit said taking advantage of long standing and fruitful business relationship with Acushnet Thailand, local distributors of Titleist and FootJoy, and a few other companies, the company has been contemplating to host club fitting, ball fitting and shoe fitting camps at the pro shop for the benefit of RBSC members. Members can try the equipment and accessories displayed at such camps without any obligation to buy immediately. “Things are still in the planning stage. We will update the members well in advance in case they materialise,” she added. “To better understand the members’ requirements and further improve the quality of our service, we have placed customer feedback forms at the pro shop counter. I herewith appeal all the golfing members to fill the forms and drop them in the box provided,” Khun Phanit concluded.

Titleist Launches Next Generation, High Performance Golf Equipment for Serious Golfers

D

edicated to providing serious golfers with high performance equipment in golf, Titleist has recently launched the next generation of its groundbreaking Advanced Performance irons AP1 and AP2 (712 Series), new Muscle Back (MB) and Cavity Back (CB) forged irons (712 Series) with improved looks, feel and performance, new Vokey Design SM4 wedges and new-look Scotty Cameron California.

the moment-of-inertia (MOI) without changing the CG location or the blade length. The higher MOI provides more consistent ballspeed across the clubface and better distance control. Better distance control leads to more scoring opportunities and is the key to good iron play. New MB and CB Irons The new MB and CB forged irons (712 Series) feature improved looks, feel and performance, while maintaining the classic lines, profile, solid sound and shot-shaping precision of classic forgings. However, they also provide modern playability, a benefit resulting from more than thirty years of player research and development, engineering innovation and advances in manufacturing processes. The new MB is a classic muscle back forged iron, while the new CB, also forged, features a shallow cavity-back design. Both the new MB and CB feature a redesigned back that features a faceted surface across the back affectionately known as the ‘dog bone’. This surface is larger in the heel and toe while narrowing behind the impact area. This feature locates more mass behind the impact area for the traditional solid feel expected from blade irons.

The new line of Titleist golf equipment for 2012, including AP1, AP2, CB, MB irons, Vokey Design SM4 wedge and Scotty Cameron California putter, was introduced to newsmen by Titleist SEA Brand Manager Mr. Rick Brown and Titleist Marketing Manager Khun Watchara Kanpukdi at a ‘media day’ organised on the premises of Thana City Golf Course on 11 October. New AP1 and AP2 Irons The new Titleist AP1 and AP2 irons (712 Series) stay true to the design mission of ‘Advanced Performance with Feel’. Both models are multi-material, dual cavity irons that provide modern ball flight and forgiveness with the traditional looks, feel and sound that serious golfers have come to expect from Titleist irons.

Both new models feature a Tour-preferred satin finish that reduces glare and accentuates the toe and topline profile for easier alignment of the face and confidence at address. Based on player feedback, the sole of the new MB has been improved, with trailing edge and heel relief for reduced resistance through the turf. The new MB sole is great for players with a shallow angle of attack who tend to pick the ball off the turf, while the slightly wider sole CB helps players that are more aggressive through the turf.

The improvements incorporated into the new AP irons came about as the result of continued research that indicated that serious golfers were looking for improvements in three main areas. First, most players wanted even greater refinements to the clubhead’s profile. Both the new AP1 and AP2 models feature sleeker contours that result in a better address position. Players also expressed a desire for more forgiveness, to get more out of their miss-hits, or said another way, better distance control. Both the new AP1 and AP2 have been improved with internal weighting that utilises higher density tungsten in order to distribute mass more efficiently which increases

New Vokey Design SM4 Wedges Born from the unique artistry and clubmaking experience of master wedge craftsman Bob Vokey, Titleist Vokey Design

Wedges have earned the reputation as the game’s finest short game tools. Since 1998, Vokey Design wedges have achieved overwhelming success as the favorite of more players across the worldwide professional tours and competitive golf and as a leader with serious golfers in the marketplace. In fact, Vokey Design wedges have been the top choice on the PGA Tour in terms of player count and wins for eight consecutive years and counting. Now, Titleist has introduced a completely new line of Vokey Design Spin Milled wedges to maximize performance within the limits of the 2010 Groove Rule. The new Vokey Design SM4 wedges feature 17 precise, individually cut and 100% inspected grooves that maximize groove geometry and push groove edge radius to the conforming limits. Using computer aided design (CAD), SM4 wedges also feature a new shape inspired by Vokey’s original 200 series. With twenty-one loft and bounce combinations and five different sole grinds that Vokey developed through his research and work with the best players in the world, the new Vokey Design SM4 wedges represent the next generation of the most renowned scoring clubs in golf. Scotty Cameron California Putters Over 30 refinements were made in order to achieve the balanced shapes and blended surface and edge transitions found in the new California putters. Angles in the face, sole and neck are precisely milled to ensure that each model presents a perfectly square set-up at address. Incorporating a trend that has become popular among Cameron enthusiasts on Tour, the new California putters feature deeper milling in the face of the putter. This modification results in a softer sound at impact, yielding a feel that many better putters prefer. Each California putter is equipped with a new Pistolero grip with a dancing Cameron logo for a secure hold and great feel in the hands. Also new for 2011, the California putters feature a new Sea Mist finish and recessed red Tour dot graphics that call to mind the tail lights of vintage American automobiles. Coupled with the clean uninterrupted appearance of the stepless shaft, the new California graphics create a modern but timeless look. The new line features five models – Del Mar, Fastback, Monterey, Monterey 1.5 and Sonoma - characterized by blade and mid-mallet style heads with five different neck styles. In combination, all these different options make it easy for players to choose a Cameron California putter with the appearance they prefer, the length and weight they need, and a neck configuration that provides the proper amount of toe flow during the stroke. Each Cameron California putter features a draft sole design that keeps the putter square in the playing position for proper alignment and a high toe set-up that reduces the tendency for players to raise the toe and aim left of target. All five California models are also appointed with a new simulated carbon fiber head cover. Pinnacle Golf Balls The event also has seen the launch of Pinnacle golf balls that deliver exceptional combination of powerful distance and feel. A long-standing leader in the distance and value golf ball category, Pinnacle streamlines its previous four-model family into one performance target. Pinnacle Gold delivers powerful distance and soft feel along with exceptional quality and consistency, without breaking the bank. The new Pinnacle product line is offered in four options: Pinnacle Gold in Bright White and High Optix Yellow; and Pinnacle Gold Ribbon in Bright White and Clear Pearlescent Pink.

Golf Tips

BETTER GOLF

A FEW SIMPLE THOUGHTS

WITH BILL

When standing at a golf ball, it is better to have your feet closer together than to be too wide. If your feet are too far apart, you can’t shift your weight on to your left side on the downswing and you can’t turn your hips very good either. Keeping your feet more narrow also keeps you more relaxed. Ideally, your feet should be just slightly wider than your shoulders.

Bill Hutton, who turned professional in 1983, is a ‘Class A’ member of the Professional Golfers’ Association of USA. He has been the Director of Junior Golf at the Royal Bangkok Sports Club for the last 10 years. Formerly, he was the Head Pro at the Winsan Golf Club (now known as Legacy Golf Club). Bill appeared on Kong Fak Nak Golf, a programme telecast every midnight on TV Channel 3 for over eight years. He gave more than 1,500 golf tips through the programme during 1997-2005.

Standing with your feet far apart like this inhibits your ability to turn and shift weight to your left on the downswing.

Notice my knees are not Keeping your feet about together and my hips this far apart is perfect. A have not turned enough nice athletic position. because the feet are too wide.

My hips have turned, my shoulders have turned, my knees are together, my right foot is on its tip toe...Very good!

It is also better to stand a little closer to a ball than to stand too far from a ball. If you stand too far from the ball, your arms are reaching out too much. This will make your swing more flat, resulting in topping. Also, this makes for an arms and hands type swing (can’t use legs or hips on downswing effectively).

I am too far from the ball causing me to bend over too much and reach out to the ball…Not good.

This is much better posture. I’m standing taller, with my arms hanging down. I can hit the ball much straighter and higher from this position.

If you stand a little closer to the ball, your swing becomes more upright and you will hit the ball higher and straighter. You will also be able to utilize your legs and hips more on the downswing and generate more power.

Not really a bad thing. from the inside like this. Never do this. Never let the clubhead swing inside as you begin your backswing. This only leads to an outside to inside swing path on the downswing (slice). Take the club straight back, in line with your toes is best. But if the clubhead is a little ‘outside’ the hands, that’s OK. This will help to let the arms and clubhead drop down on the downswing and hit the ball from an inside path.

Because I let the club go inside on the takeaway, the downswing will likely be from the outside like this…Hello slice!

You want to keep the hands away from your head at the top of the backswing like this.

Lastly, never let the hands get close to your head on your backswing or the finish swing. Always keep the hands away and you will have a more consistent swing arc and will put the ‘big’ muscles in control of the swing. If you let your hands draw in close to your head on the backswing you will likely ‘release early’ on the downswing which leads to topping or hitting the ground before the ball! If you follow these simple thoughts, you can And finish with the hands Here the hands have come Here the hands are too bid adieu to slices and other types of missaway like this. I Ulsoor Lake

Cubbon Park

f you’ve been in India awhile, the moment you touch down in ‘Bengaluru’, the capital of Karnataka State, to the moment you leave, you will probably feel like having a soothing break from endless commotion and hassles seen elsewhere in the country.

MAJOR ATTRACTIONS Wonder La Park is a fun and frolic place that has filled the whole of Bengaluru with absolute thrill and unbridled joy. Located just under 30 km from the Garden City along the BangaloreMysore Highway, the spanking new amusement park has all that it takes to provide unlimited fun for the entire family – high thrill rides, water slides, wave pools, musical fountains, laser Hig h Court shows, virtual reality theatre and restaurants.

The first city in India to get electricity, Bengaluru continues to blaze the trail in terms of the country’s quest for a modern identity. Once known as the Garden City, the country’s most pristine city evolved significantly when the hightech revolution arrived and it suddenly found itself at the center of the nation’s massive computer hardware and software industries, earning a new sobriquet – the ‘Silicon Valley of India’.

Bangalore Aquarium is situated on Kasturba Road, at the entrance of the magnificent Cubbon Park. It is housed inside an octagonal-shaped building and boasts of having an exotic variety of aquatic life. Cubbon Park is situated near Gandhi Nagar in Bangalore. Dating back to the year 1864, the park was laid by Sir Mark Cubbon, the then viceroy of India. Infact, the park has been named after him only. The fairy fountains and an august bandstand were added later on.

Formerly known as ‘Bangalore’, its cosmopolitan spirit, fueled as much by its lively bar and cafe culture as by the influx of international businesspeople, gives India’s high-tech hub a high-enTipu Sultan Palace ergy buzz, yet it is tangibly calmer and cleaner than most other places in the country, with far and away the best climate of any Indian city.

Attara Kacheri is a building housing the High Court. Situated opposite the Vidhana Soudha, it dates back to the year 1867. One of the major attractions of the Attara Kacheri is its Gothic Style of architecture. It is a two-storied building, built in the European classical style. The Jawaharlal Nehru Planetarium is situated on T. Chowdiah Road. Established in the year 1989, it counts amongst the popular tourist attractions of the city. There is a sky theater inside the planetarium, with a huge dome that has a diameter of 15 meters.

Bengaluru is India’s 5th largest metropolitan city and the fastest growing city in Asia. With its tree-lined avenues, old bungalows, beautiful parks, trendy, dazzling pubs, bustling downtown, software flood, hallowed places of worship, traditional marketplaces, fashionable shopping malls and ultra-modern architectural wonders, Bengaluru truly offers one a picture of striking contrasts.

Hyder Ali, the Emperor of Mysore, laid down the foundation of the Lalbagh Botanical Gardens in the 18th Century. The beautiful and evergreen gardens were later completed by his son, Tipu Sultan.

THINGS TO DO The temperate climate of Bengaluru is about experiencing an Indian city that brims with bars, restaurants, clubs, and positive energy - a great place for walking, shopping, lounging in al-fresco coffee shops, and letting your hair down, at least till 11.30pm after which the city more or less shuts down.

Situated near the City Market, the Tipu Sultan Fort was initially built by Kempe Gowda, the founder of Bangalore, and was later extended by Tipu Sultan, the Emperor of Mysore.

If you’re an early riser, the one sight that is an absolute must, is a visit to the bustling City Market - an absolute riot of colors, sights, smells and sounds, with mounds of flowers (Bengaluru contributes to 70% of India’s floral export) and fresh vegetables. The best time to visit is between 6 and 8am. Next, set off for Bugle Hill, site of the Bull Temple (sanctum timings daily 7.30-11.30am and 4.30-8.30pm).

Bangalore Palace

Ulsoor Lake is situated on the northeastern fringe of the city center, near the busy M. G. Road. The lake was constructed by Kempe Gowda II. Spread over an area of approximately 1.5 square kilometers, the Ulsoor Lake is famous for boating and swimming. Bangkok Airways has commenced a new route to Bengaluru with five flights per week from 26 September 2011 onwards. Travelers can reach the Garden City directly flying with Asia’s boutique airline. ASIA - GOLFERS’ PARADISE For golfing buffs, Asian courses are paradise, especially since many have been designed by stalwarts such as Greg Norman, and Jack Nicklaus, are situated in the balmy and breathtaking tropics and are – by European and American standards – not too expensive. What is further complementary about choosing a golf holiday in Asia is the quality spa and five-star accommodation options available across the continent, especially in Southeast Asia where quality and cost are not mutually exclusive concepts. To cater for golfers, many courses and golfing resorts have been built across Asia. Here are some of best courses in Asia: Laguna Phuket Golf Club, Phuket, Thailand: Lauded already in numerous publications as one of Asia’s premier golf resort destinations, the Laguna Phuket Golf Club is set among the Laguna Resort Complex which features five luxury hotels. It boasts an 18–hole, par–71 course designed by Max Wexler and David Abell and caters to players of all levels of expertise. But the course certainly is challenging as 13 of the 18 holes are in close proximity to the actual lagoon. Measuring 6,654 yards from the back tees and 5,464 yards from the front tees, the course features a wealth of scenic lagoons, coconut groves and undulating fairways, set against the dramatic backdrop of the surrounding mountains and Andaman Sea.

Hornbill Golf & Jungle Club, Sarawak, Malaysia

Hornbill Golf & Jungle Club, Sarawak, Malaysia: The golf course nestles amongst the 1.5 million years old virgin rainforest, the 2nd oldest and 2nd largest rainforest in the world. The elevation stands at 1000 meters (3000 ft.) above sea level, so it is cool throughout the year. It follows the natural contours of the rugged mountain terrain, enclosed on all sides by the Borneo rainforest. The course was designed to reflect the natural features and contours of its unique highland location. The result is a course which does not impose itself on the ancient rainforest, but works in harmony with it. You can sometimes enjoy playing golf in clouds. Kawana Hotel & Golf Resort, Japan: Known as the Pebble Beach of Japan, Kawana Hotel and its two golf courses are built along red cliffs facing the Pacific Ocean, with the legendary Fuji Mountain as the backdrop. The Oshima course is Japan’s first golf course designed by Otani Komyo in 1928. The Fuji course designed by British golf architect Charles H. Allison in 1932 is more for lower handicap golfers -- challenging and with deep bunkers -- but the panoramic view of Mt. Fuji from the greens is simply breathtaking. The hotel is built based on an old English country estate with a bit of Spanish influence but the rooms offer Japanese-style suites. It is a nice weekend getaway, just a two-hour bullet train ride from Tokyo. The turf is Korai grass, a strong kind of Bermuda grass where the ball sits as if on a tee while providing deadly rough and tricky putting surfaces. Another particularity at Kawana are the mandatory female caddies.

Nicklaus’s excellent, well-maintained; out-and-back layout blends effortlessly with its gently undulating surroundings, producing one memorable hole after another. Beyond the good-width fairways and light semi-rough lies thick impenetrable vegetation, so some tee-shots feel dauntingly tight during your first round here.

Mission Hills Golf Club, Shenzhen, China: The grandiose scope and scale of the Chinese is reflected here in southern China where 12 18-hole golf courses, or 180 holes in total, spread across an area of about 5,000 acres. Just 30 minutes outside of Hong Kong, it is accredited as the world’s largest golf facility by the Guinness World Records in 2004, surpassing the Pinehurst Resort in the United States. Each of the twelve courses is designed by and named after some of the world’s most famous golf legends: Jack Nicklaus, David Duval, Pete Dye, Nick Faldo, David Leadbetter, Jumbo Ozaki, Ernie Els, Vijay Singh and Greg Norman. Apart from golf courses, Mission Hills also features the Mission Hills Spa, Mission Hills Resort, Country Club featuring the largest tennis centre in Asia with 51 courts, including a 3,000 seater stadium court, Zhang Lianwei Golf Academy and Mission Hills Golf Academy, 4 spa locations and a 5-star hotel.

The Nirvana Bali Golf Club boasts an 18–hole course designed by the legendary Greg Norman, and has been featured in several publications. The course is made challenging by the elaborate network of streams, ponds and terraces plus its ocean lapping location. Along the right side of hole 12, Balinese temples under tall coconut trees welcome golfers. The most dramatic tee shot will be the par 3 hole 7, which measures 214 yards from the tee box past the fairway across the Indian Ocean and onto the green. The resort is set amid softly landscaped foothills and staccato rice paddy plantations. Trade winds off the Indian Ocean sweep gently across and through the stands of delicately woven, thatched Balinese roofs that dot the property.

Pinx Golf Club, Jeju Island, South Korea: Part of a unique luxury hotel and golf retreat, the Pinx Golf Club is an exclusive facility set within pleasant surroundings on South Korea’s Jeju Island. Pinx golf course offers 27 holes with a spectacular view of the Halla Mountain and the blue ocean. The Canyon Course and the Lakes Course are cradled in a 720-acre valley where each hole has a magnificent view of the beautiful Phang Nga Mountains and the Andaman Sea. Designed around freshwater lakes, there are 14 water hazards with a number of challenging par 3s. For long drivers, try out hole 13 -- “The Tiger Hole” -- across the lake, bunkers, and trees for a par 4 ‘one-on’. The hole is named after Tiger Woods who once shot across 270 yards from the black tee past the canyon plunging into deep waters and successfully landed his spectacular drive shot on the green.

Vietnam

Phoenix Golf Resort, Halong Bay, Hanoi, Vietnam: It is located 40 kilometers north of Hanoi in an area referred to as ‘Halong Bay on Land’. The view from the course and clubhouse is spectacular as the limestone outcroppings which frame and come into play on many of the holes resemble those most people only expect to see in the famous Halong Bay. The 54 hole Phoenix Golf Resort is the largest pure-play golf facility in Vietnam and second largest in Asia. Designed by Ronald Fream, each of the three courses at Phoenix makes use of severe fairway and green undulations as well as clever routing through and around the unique-looking limestone cliffs. Additional Japanese and Korean design inputs ensure that the surrounding environment is both well protected and stunning at the same time. The three courses are named Phoenix, Dragon, and Master. The Master is a links-style open course, while the other two play in a more mountainous fashion. You may like to try the Phoenix course, but be sure not to miss a single hole on the most spectacular and best - the Dragon course.

IRONS - 2011 HOT LIST

Mizuno MP-59: The Mizuno iron features Titanium Muscle Technology, which delivers full cavity forgiveness in a half cavity design. These irons undergo a Grain Flow Forging process which combines to produce the optimal blend of control and feel. Sound and feel are optimized through Modal Analysis and Harmonic Impact Technology, providing the feedback that better players demand. Titleist AP2 : The Titleist AP2 are multi-material, dual cavity irons that take the design mission of “Advanced Performance You Can Feel” to new heights. Titleist combined several technologies and materials in the back cavity of the new AP irons resulting in a new Tuned Feel System to take feel to a new level. The new Tuned Feel System is a soft elastomer/aluminum co-molded medallion, to improve sound and feel, resulting in a softer, more solid feel. The leading edge has also been redesigned to improve turf interaction, creating more solid ballto-face contact.

Adams Idea Pro a12: Designed for lower handicappers, the Idea Pro a12 forged irons incorporate design features intended to improve control and workability, including progressive heel-to-toe weighting and progressive offset. The club heads are forged from 8620 carbon steel, with milled faces and grooves. The Adams Idea Pro a12 Forged Irons come in both right- and left-handed, and in R, S and X shaft flexes. Adams Pro a12 forged iron set delivers outstanding feel and consistency around the golf course.

Nike VR Pro Cavity: The Nike irons offer consistent distance for mid- and mid-high handicap players, wrapped in a club looking like it is designed for better players. Wider sole increases playability from a variety of lies and variable centers of gravity keep gapping consistent. Through the use of a tungstenresin inserts, the center of gravity is adjusted specifically for each club. Meaning, the ball flight apex for each club is closer together.

Tour Edge Exotics XCG-4: These irons are widesoled, but with relief in the rear half of the sole. That “split-level sole” maintains the weighting benefits of a wide sole but with less turf interaction. The back part of the sole also includes two tungsten weights. These tungsten inserts allow for perfect weight positioning and optimal performance. A superthin face, the deep undercut cavity, the wide sole design, the perimeter weighting and the tungsten sole weights help to lower the center of gravity, and optimize the trajectory.

TaylorMade R11: The R11 irons incorporate the “precision weighting port,” TaylorMade first used in its forged irons, the red “badge.” This weight, positioned during assembly, is used to maintain a uniform swing weight as well as to position the center of gravity in the center of the face from toe to heel on each iron. In addition, a light and lively face combines with “inverted cone technology” to deliver more consistent ball speeds and forgiveness on mis-hits.

Ping G20: The Ping irons feature a new Custom Tuning Port which expands perimeter weighting. The thinner face of the G20 helps position weight to the toe for added forgiveness. The wider sole provides a higher launch angle. Strong lofts and a low center of gravity produce long shots with a high trajectory and maximum forgiveness. The G20 iron set is very similar to the G15’s, with a slightly wider sole. The cavity of these irons features a very similar look to the G15’s but with a new soft layer on the back to help with sound, feel and vibrations.

We combined the techniques using proven Radio Frequency Assisted Liposuction (RFAL) technology with a Computerized Pain Control system (CPACs) . The programme will be conducted by contour specialist in the related field either face or body. On the actual treatment day, it will take around 2 to 6 hours, depending on the number of area and the amount of fat to be removed from the patient.

be achieved in 3 months. Depend on your body structure and composition of bone, muscle and fat, the result should be individually discussed with our specialist. If that’s not possible in one day, how long such a woman has to wait and what she has to do to realize her lofty dream? With the world’s latest technology, the main procedure can be done in one day. Radio Frequency Assisted Liposuction (RFAL) can provide the impressive result far beyond the current liposuction technology. This technique provides a combination of minimal invasive liposuction and skin tightening. Alternatively, for the same result, a person must exercise and maintain strict diet for years. This is why we have the largest number of RFAL clients in Thailand. Is the treatment process painful? As mentioned earlier, we introduce a Computerized Pain Control system(CPACs) that makes patient sleep and wake up in seconds. Client will experience a deep sleep and feel NO PAIN. An anesthesiologist, who specialize s in pain control, will manage the medication to suit individual needs and assist you through the operation.

After the treatment is done, how often one has to revisit? We care for our client’s satisfaction. After the treatment, clients can always discuss conditions with our direct lines. In general case, we made three appointments within two weeks to check ups and follow ups. Along with the treatment, what lifestyle changes do you suggest so that on e won’t put on extra pounds again? Fat cells are permanently removed; hence the result is long lasting. Our clients can resume their usual life style. Although, as a team of health professional, we also recommend our client to eat good food and occasionally exercise in order to stay healthy.

Will there be any side-effects? Minor side effects may occur. According to our experience, we have found are bruises that normally clear within only 10 days. Get Your Confidence and Hearty Smiles Back..!

D

ental implants are so natural-looking that you may even forget you have ever lost a tooth! You know that your confidence about your teeth affects how you feel about yourself, both personally and professionally. Perhaps you hide your smile because of spaces from missing teeth. Maybe your dentures don’t feel secure. Perhaps you have difficulty chewing. If you are missing one or more teeth and would like to smile, speak and eat again with comfort and confidence, here is some very GOOD NEWS!

Who is a candidate for a dental implant? Dental implants are an ideal option for people in good general oral health who have lost a tooth or teeth due to periodontal disease, an injury, or some other reason. Adequate bone in your jaw is needed to support the implant, and the best candidates have healthy gum tissues that are free of periodontal disease. If the patient has uncontrolled blood pressure, immunosuppressant or bleeding disorders implant surgery can’t be performed. Likewise, uncontrolled diabetes or heavy smoking would affect the success of a dental implant.

Dental implants are teeth that can look and feel just like your own! Under proper conditions and diligent maintenance, implants can last a lifetime!

What are the advantages of a dental implant? Dental Implant offers a secure base for the replacement tooth as it fuses to the jawbone. Your smile can be restored with the look and feel of a natural tooth. Other benefits are improved appearance and self-esteem, enhanced comfort and speech, better eating and enjoying more nutritious foods.

But what are the benefits of dental implants? Is the procedure painful? Are dental implants recommended for a particular age group or persons with specific conditions or anyone? To find the answers, RBSC ELITE recently paid a visit to the Dental Centre at BNH Hospital.

Can growing children undergo a dental implant? A young patient whose bones are still growing isn’t a good candidate for a dental implant. It’s better for them to wait until they have stopped growing. Does a dental implant need extra care? Healthy gums and teeth are a necessity to support dental implants. Commitment to meticulous oral hygiene routine, including regular brushing, flossing and periodical checks by your dentist protects the supporting tissue.

What is a dental implant and how it is done? A dental implant is a metal post which is surgically placed in the jaw under the gum. The implant sits firmly in the jaw as the bone grows around it in the healing process. The replacement tooth or crown is then attached to the metal post, giving you the restoration that is a lot like your natural tooth. Implants can help secure bridges and dentures as well if more than one tooth is missing.

How is a dental implant superior to a denture? The gum tissue is never meant to support the biting force of the mouth; that is the role of the dental root. If a tooth is missing it is better to replace it with the one that has an artificial root such as an implant rather than denture or plate that simply rests on the gum. A dental implant can help support and retain replacement tooth better than the conventional denture. With a dental implant, which doesn’t need support from the neighbouring teeth or gum tissue unlike a denture, the patient will be more comfortable and confident. Thus with dental implants, you can get your lost confidence and hearty smiles back to stay with you as long as you live!

Money Matters

Is Investment in Your Portfolio Mix and Match? - By Suthipong Sucharittanonta, CFPTM

T

o start your investment planning, the allocation of assets has to be considered properly. What is the asset allocation? Assets allocation is the combination of different asset classes in a portfolio. It determines how much risk your portfolio has and how much should you invest in each assets class. Each asset class has a different risk and return characteristic. For example, a stock has a high return along with a high risk, while bond has a lower return, more stable, and a lower risk. You might have heard the phase “High risk, High return It is quite true to say that. In general, the stock price can go up and down in a wider range than bond. The general asset classes are stock, bond and cash: Stocks - help your portfolio to grow Bonds - generate income Cash - gives a portfolio security and stability

Age and Asset Allocation From the old rule of thumb, the amount of investments of stock in your portfolio (except bonds and cash) should be 100 minus your age. For example, if you are 50 years old, the amount that you should invest in stocks is 100 - 50 = 50%. However, this number could be adjusted to suit your personal risk tolerance. For the younger person of 25 years old, he can invest 75% in stocks and 25% in bonds and cash. Risk will be minimized over a long period of time. He also has a long time until retirement to invest and grow his portfolio while the retired person has no flow of income from working. Therefore, the retiree needs to preserve his wealth by investing in low risk assets such as bond and fixed income instrument and a low portion of good fundamental stocks.

How many percent of your portfolio should be invested in stocks, bonds, cash or money market funds? There are many ways to allocate assets in a portfolio. However, the basic way is to consider the investment ratio between cash, stocks and bonds. Stocks give the potential for long-term growth but more volatile, while bonds are less volatile and give income annually, but with less growth. Cash or money market funds are more safety and liquidity than stocks and bonds. However, return is generally much lower than stocks or bonds. Therefore, it is very important to decide how much should be invested in each asset classes. The determination for the mixture of stocks, bonds, and cash is simply looking at age and life expectancy. For a young person, investment time horizons are long and the volatility of stocks would be minimized. As a person approaches retirement, they depend more on income from investments that can provide return and less risky. In this case, they should invest more in bonds rather than in stocks.

When should you rebalance your portfolio? The objective of rebalancing portfolio is to move the current asset allocation back in line to the original investment plan. As time goes by, the securities may deviate from the original plan. Moreover, if your age and risk torelance has changed, the adjustment of investment in your portfolio would be needed. Therefore, your portfolio should be evaluated and rebalanced every 6 or 12 months. By properly allocating your assets to your age or retirement, as well as your risk tolerance, and rebalancing on a regular basis, you can limit the volatility in your portfolio.

There are two components of asset allocation that need to be considered: 1.) Your asset allocation and age, or when you want to retire. 2.) A period of time that you want to rebalance your portfolio, or change your asset allocation.
