I would like to congratulate all the winners. Team Championship: Winners – Khun Vivat Vinicchayakul & Khun Sathirut Tandanand Runners-Up

On the last day of the month, we hosted the 3rd RBSC Junior Team Invitational 2012. The main intention of this tournament was to give an opportunity to our junior golfers to compete as a team and meet talented juniors from other school. We started this tournament 3 years ago with only four teams. This year we were able to host a total of 11 teams, including our own. The team trophy was won by the American School of Bangkok (ASB) with RBSC managing a close second. I would like to congratulate ASB and thank our junior golfers who tried very hard. I also would like to thank all participants in this tournament. We will start the renovation of Hole #1 and Hole #4 fairways to improve their drainage. Once completed, the fairways of both holes will no longer be wet during rainy season. I would like to apologize for the inconvenience caused. Happy Golfing!! Sincerely,

Surin Banyatpiyaphod RBSC Golf Captain

Captain’s Corner

Dear Members, April 2012 probably went down in history as Bangkok’s hottest month ever with the mercury rising to 40-41 Celsius for weeks! I hope this RBSC ELITE issue will find our lady golfers with just sufficient tan, in good health physically and mentally. April tournament was Mom Kobkaew Cup, which was played on Friday the 20th. Unfortunately, I had to attend to personal matters at our home in Perth, Australia, for most of the month. Luckily, we have such a strong team in Ladies Golf Section. My most sincere thanks to all of the team: Khun Fuyumi Watanabe, Khun Supitr Jivamongkol, Khun Nitayada Purananda, Khun Boonsiri Foorungsriroj, Khun Onchittra Veerasaksri and Khun Sasitorn Chokwatana for organizing Mom Kobkaew Cup tournament perfectly in my absence. Congratulations to the winner Khun Malinee Srutanond and runner-up Khun Tuenjai Asavisanu. Hats off to both golfers for playing so well in this record heat! Next tournament is the flag competition Phya Srivikorn Cup on Wed 23rd May. We hope that the lady golfers will be back in their top competitive spirit as the temperature in May will cool down to 33 Celsius, on average, thanks to the rainy season. Practice more and stay dry na ka!

RBSC Golfers Join ‘Golfers Love The King’ and Pledge Unfettered allegiance to His Majesty Poomhatai, Palit and Apichat Come Off With Flying Colours! Ace Golfer Suvir Aces 13th Hole!! 18 April 2012

Golfers of the Royal Bangkok Sports Club pledged their unfettered allegiance to H.M. King Bhumibol Adulyadej by taking part at the Golfers Love The King tournament held at the Sports club as part of a nation-wide charity event on 6 April.

Khun Palit Mahadumrongkul, Khun Chawalit Chanarat, Khun Noppawan Suvarnpradip and Khun Vichai Srisakulyanon

Khun Saeng Meenijacin, Khun Prayote Sudchainark, Khun Sukit Pachimsawat and M.R. Ophas Kanchanavijaya

Khun Trinud Chaichanavichakit, Khun Patchanee Wattanavekin, Khun Rungravee Mapaisansin and Khun Suvit Mapaisansin

Organised by Thailand Golf Courses Association (TGCA) and Thailand Golf Association (TGA) in more than 200 golf courses across the length and breadth of the kingdom, the mega event was expected to attract the participation of at least 15,000 golfers, amateurs and professionals alike, in an attempt to enter the Guinness Book of World Records as the largest event of its kind held on a single day, anywhere in the world! The world’s largest golfing event was organised in continuation of the 7th Cycle (84th) Birthday celebrations of the ruling Monarch of the Kingdom of Thailand. The tournament was in fact the second of its kind in Thailand. The first event was held in 1999, 12 years ago, under the stewardship of then chairman of TGCA Khun Prayudh Mahagitsiri to celebrate the 6 th Cycle Birthday of His Majesty. The gracious event was also aimed to catch the attention of the world, boost inbound tourism, improve domestic tourism sector and reposition Thailand as Asia’s golf hub. Besides, it endeavoured to strengthen unity and friendly relationship among golfers and golf course operators and members of the two associations. Proceeds from the tournament collected towards green fee would be donated to the Royal Palace for His Majesty’s Royal consideration and disposition. As many as 182 golfers of the Sports Club enrolled their names for the all-day tourney by donating 1,000 baht per person. Each one of them would later be presented with a pink T-shirt and cap as souvenirs by the organizers of the Guinness World Record event. The tournament took off at 6.00 am and continued till dusk on Friday. The participants were split into three categories – ‘Flight A’ (HCP 0-8), ‘Flight B’ (HCP 9-18) and ‘Flight C’ (Above 18). As for those who didn’t have handicaps, ‘System 36’ was applied for calculating their net scores at the end of the tourney. Seasoned golfers Khun Poomhatai Svetasobhana (8), Khun Palit Mahadumrongkul (10) and Khun Apichat Nantaterm (19) were adjudged as the winners of the three flights with net scores of 63, 64 and 65 respectively. The highlight of the event was a superb ace drilled by ace golfer Mr. Suvir Sachdev with a pitching wedge on 128-yd hole #13.

Team Championship Seasoned Golfers Vivat and Sathirut Prove They are Unbeatable! 24 April 2012

RBSC’s seasoned golfers Khun Vivat Vinicchayakul and Khun Sathirut Tandanand proved that they were unbeatable as a team at one of the most popular events of the year - Team Championship – played for two days from 21 April.

Khun Bhumindr Harinsuit, Khun Authachai Tangchitnob, Khun Palit Mahadumrongkul and Khun Dilokpol Sundaravej

Competing in the tournament, several avid golfers teamed up with their best buddies and staged an intense battle for two days staking their claim for the most sought after Team Championship Trophy. The competition was played in a foursome stroke play format with ¾ of the combined handicap. In all, 18 teams competed on the first day with each partner taking turns to play the same ball. Of them, 17 pairs were qualified to continue on the next and final day. The final round started off on Sunday at 7.30 am. With 12 pairs turning in an overnight score of 72 or less, it appeared like a tough fight was in store for the qualifying teams. Khun Vivat and Khun Sathirut, who had displayed some immaculate iron play on the first day, managed to turn in a respectable 70 and eventually win the trophy with a two-day total of 136. The team of Khun Krisda Leeaphorn and Mr. Suvir Sachdev (7) carded a superb 69 but had to satisfy with the runners-up position, thanks to their first day’s score of 70. Speaking to RBSC ELITE on the momentous occasion, Khun Sathirut said: “We are extremely delighted that we (himself and Khun Vivat) won the Team Championship. When we began the second day, we thought we had good chances as Dr. Pak’s (Dr. Rattachat-Dr. Tonphong) team had a triple bogey on the first hole. But later on they played very well. Then we changed our game plan not to be aggressive but play cautiously for par. Until we reached the 16th green, it was like anybody’s game. The game turned in our favour when my partner sunk a very long putt, while Dr. Pak missed a short one.”

Who inspired you to take up golf? My dad worked at Wachiralongkorn Dam. Every summer I had a chance to visit my dad. He played golf every evening and encouraged me to join him. So I decided to take 7 iron with me and started to play golf since then. When I returned to Bangkok I started to take golf seriously as my dad sent me to learn with a golf pro. By the way, I was 8 years old at that time. What did you learn from playing golf? First of all, I’ve learned to be patient. Honesty and manners in golf game are also very important. I do believe regular practising at the driving range would help make reliable shots on the golf course. Do you have any memorable moments in your golfing life? I was the Winner for NAVY Invitational Golf Cup in 2003. Have you got a hole-in-one? Yes, I’ve got a hole-in-one in April 2009. It was on the 17th hole at RBSC. Who is your favorite professional golfer? Why do you like him/her? Since I was young my favorite professional golfer has been Fred Couples. A former World No. 1, he has won numerous events, most notably the 1992 Masters Tournament. I like him for his relaxed swing but powerful drive! Have you played golf abroad? Yes, I played as a junior amateur in Malaysia. Which golf course in the world you like the most and why? It would definitely be the original St.Andrews in Scotland. Because St. Andrews Links is the most renowned golfing landscape in the world and very challenging. What is your big dream in golf? My dream would be winning Club Championship or H.M. the King’s Birthday Cup at RBSC. What is your dream car and why do you like it? Subaru BRZ STI. It is not only sporty and powerful but hotter!

How to Avoid Back Pain and Enjoy Golf! Valuable advice from Dr. Nanthadej Hiranyasthiti, Spine Surgeon, Bumrungrad International Hospital

B

ack pain (also known as ‘dorsalgia’) usually originates from the muscles, nerves, bones, joints or other structures in the spine. The pain may have a sudden onset or can be chronic; it can be constant or intermittent, stay in one place or radiate to other areas such as arms, hands, legs or feet. It may be a dull ache, or a sharp, piercing or burning sensation. It may include symptoms other than pain, such as weakness, numbness or tingling. Back pain is an incredibly common complaint in working adults and elders. An estimated 80% of adults will experience low back pain at least once in their lifetime. So it’s worthwhile to know how to keep back pain at bay and avoid discomfort. What special risks do golfers face? Which type of pain is serious? When should a person see a doctor?

How can golfers avoid back pain and discomfort? Adopt classic swing technique (a big shoulder and hip turn on the backswing), which is safer for your back. You can play longer with the classic swing even as you get older. Modern swings tend to hurt golfers’ backs much faster. Make sure body weight is properly shifted to the inside of the right foot (for a right-hander) during the backswing, and that arms and shoulders are kept within the plane of the swing at the top of the backswing. Slow down the backswing to minimise rotational stress on the lower back at the top of the backswing. Use proper back mechanics when lifting your golf bag; bend the knees (squat) when retrieving the ball. Consider switching to a putter with a longer shaft. Warm up and stretch before you play. And do stretching exercises for a few minutes to cool down your muscles after a round. When should a patient suffering from back pain see their doctor? If it is dull pain that you feel in the morning after you wake up, or sit for a long time, it is probably chronic back pain or something not as serious. But if the pain is sharp and shoots down your leg, it may be a more serious spinal problem and you should see your doctor. For more information or to schedule a consultation, please call Bumrungrad’s Spine Institute at 0 2667 1555 or visit - www.bumrungrad.com.

To answer these questions, RBSC ELITE talked to spine surgeon Dr. Nanthadej Hiranyasthiti of Bumrungrad Hospital’s Spine Institute. Excerpts from the interview: What causes back pain? Back pain can be caused by poor posture, improper lifting, and improper sleeping positions; back injuries such as a muscle strain or ligament sprain; degenerative conditions such as osteoporosis and arthritis; and bone or muscle diseases such as herniated discs, spondylosis and spinal stenosis. Stress, anxiety or depression can also contribute. Less common but more serious causes of back pain include renal disease, aneurysms, spinal tumors and cancer. From a golfer’s perspective, what are the risk factors? Many golf injuries occur due to improper grip and swing mechanics, but a lack of fitness and flexibility also contribute to the most common golf injuries and pain. Some club golfers hit the course early in the morning without warming up and stretching their muscles. With their body tight and lacking flexibility, they try too hard to hit beyond their ability, as if to ‘kill’ the ball. This can cause stiffness and strain the back. Abrupt lowering of the body to read a putt or pick up the ball, or standing up suddenly from a squat position can also cause back pain. It can happen to any golfer, irrespective of age and sex.

WRONG – My lower body hasn’t turned along with my shoulders during the backswing.

RIGHT – You can see a big turn in both my upper body and hips, which is safe for the back.

RBSC’s Golf Prodigy adds another Feather to his Cap!

W

e all know that a golfer’s ultimate dream of a hole-in-one seldom comes through. There are many golfers who haven’t yet joined the ‘hole-in-one hall of fame’ although they have been playing the game for years together, while some were lucky enough to get a handful of aces in their kitty in no time. Among such ‘elite’ hall of famers is golf god’s blue-eyed boy Nicolas ‘Nick’ Normann! The Royal Bangkok Sports Club’s golf prodigy Nick has already 2 aces in the bag, a truly astonishing feat considering his tender age of 10! Nick, son of RBSC Member Mr. Anders Normann, started hitting plastic balls in their apartment before he turned 3. Says Mr. Normann about Nick: “I recall that we were all amazed with his natural swing and eye for the ball, which has followed him ever since. Figuratively speaking mother’s milk and Nick go hand in hand as Nick joined the family on golfing weekends to Pattaya and Hua Hin. I recall vividly that Nick was breastfeed in the buggy and this continued up the age of nearly 2. Yes, breast is best! Turning 4 was a great moment for Nick as he got his first caddy and was allowed to walk with us.”

Nick is a student of Bangkok Patana School and is the youngest player in the school team. Nonetheless, he has for the last 2 consecutive years been voted the ‘most valuable player’. Nick’s extraordinary talent was soon discovered by Ping, and since he turned 8, he has been fully sponsored by the company. Nick has now started taking up tennis and his dad believes he will soon make a name for himself in this noble sport. As for golf, Nick has added another 20 yards to his drives! Nick has been touted in the Danish TV as the new Asian golf ‘Tiger’, but the focus on his academic achievements will curtain this ambition. Fortunately, Nick loves RBSC and his many friends there. Nick will always want to participate in RBSC tournaments, but aspires to compete with the big boys! And yes, his dad has promised him an attractive financial reward the day he brings home the Club Championship trophy. “So, I have started saving,” concludes Mr. Normann.

His amazing talents and the ease with which he hit real golf balls soon became evident and he began participating in tournaments and his trophies cabinet is a daily reminder of his many fine achievements. The foremost among his unbelievable feats was his first ever hole-in-one at the tiny age of 6 on Palm Hills. “Personally I find his greatest achievement was his round of 74 at RBSC in the category 10 below at the age of 8. This score still stands as the lowest ever in RBSC by an 8 year old,” Mr. Normann remarked. Nick recently added another colourful feather to his cap by drilling his second ace, this time on the 115yrd Hole #8 at the Sports Club. He hit a sweet nine on to the green and in one bounce the ball disappeared into the hole!

WITH BILL

KEEP IT IN THE FRONT... ...A great tip to get more consistency in your swing

Bill Hutton, who turned professional in 1983, is a ‘Class A’ member of the Professional Golfers’ Association of USA. He has been the Director of Junior Golf at the Royal Bangkok Sports Club for the last 10 years. Formerly, he was the Head Pro at the Winsan Golf Club (now known as Legacy Golf Club). Bill appeared on Kong Fak Nak Golf, a programme telecast every midnight on TV Channel 3 for over eight years. He gave more than 1,500 golf tips through the programme during 1997-2005.

1 At the set up position, my hands and arms are in front of my body.

2 The front of my body is the space between my arms.

If you hold your arms up in front of you, the space between your arms is the ‘front of your body’. It is important to always keep your arms, hands and handle of the golf club in front of you. Obviously, as you set up to the ball, your hands and arms are in front of you. As you hit the ball, again, the arms, hands and handle are in front of you. So it would make sense that at the top of the backswing, you want to keep that relationship. The arms, hands and handle must stay in front of your body as you complete your backswing. If your hands move to the right of your right shoulder, this means you are letting your hands, arms and club to get ‘behind’ your body. THIS IS TROUBLE! It will most likely lead to an outside to inside downswing resulting in a slice and steep angle of attack (chopping). You won’t be able to use your lower body (legs and hips) effectively on the downswing (loss of power).

44 April 2012

From here, you are in a great position to ‘drop’ your arms down as you start the downswing. The arms, hands and club can now swing in unison with your body.

3 RIGHT: My hands and the shaft are directly over my right shoulder. My arms and hands are in front of my body.

4 WRONG: My left arm is too flat; my hands are getting behind my body.

7 At the top of the backswing, pay close attention to your ‘TRIANGLE’. This is formed by your hands and elbows. Keep that triangle in front of your chest. The golf shaft should be directly over your right shoulder and pointing at the target.

At impact, my hands and arms are still in front of my body. Notice my weight has shifted nicely to my left side.

The hands should be as high as your head. Your right bicep should be parallel to the ground and at the elbow level.

8 At the finish, my hands and arms are still in front of my body..

5 Because I was in such a good position at the top (see image #3), I can drop my hands and arms down into this good position.

6 Because my hands and arms were behind my body at the top (see image #4), it led to an early release as you see here.

As you finish the swing, also practice keeping the arms, hands and handle in front of your body. Learn to do this and you will get more consistency in your swing.

Sabah Named ‘Future Hot Spot’ for Golf

S

abah, located on the northern portion of the tropical paradise of Borneo island in Malaysia, is strongly on the radar as an international golf tourism destination following a visit by 33 European, Chinese and Australian golf tour operators. According to a news release from Asian Travel Media, the visitors spent three days in Sabah immediately before Asia Golf Tourism Convention (AGTC) held in the last week of April in Kuala Lumpur. They came away highly enthusiastic about the East Malaysian state’s golf and broad tourism attractions. “The golf is great, but what is also appealing about Sabah is the nature,” said German tour operator, Manfred Rauno. “Sabah isn’t known in Europe, but when people learn about the wonderful plants, animals and natural attractions - as well as the golf - I am sure they will want to come.” Australian tour operator, Fred Sparksman, whose Golf and Gourmet tours combine golf with gourmet dining and other eclectic experiences, said Sabah compared more than favourably with other Asian golf destinations. He said it was ideal for six-night stay-andplay packages.

“The courses and resort facilities at Sutera Harbour are also impressive, and being so close to Kota Kinabalu is a definite plus,” he added. Both Manfred Rauno and Fred Sparksman said they saw Sabah as an add-on destination for golf tourists visiting Singapore, the Malay peninsula and other South East Asian markets, rather than as a purely stand-alone option. “It’s a long way from Europe, but combined with major cities like Singapore and Kuala Lumpur, it’s a great fit,” Manfred Rauno said. Liberty Travel and Tours General Manager, Eu Shen Ng, who organised the tour operators’ visit to Sabah as a prelude to AGTC, said there was widespread agreement that Sabah’s golf facilities are at least as good as others on the Malay peninsula. “There is a lot of potential to increase golf tourism to Sabah,” he said. “The tour operators really loved their time there. They were very excited, especially about the orang-utan sanctuary and Sabah’s other natural attractions.

“I was especially impressed with the Shangri-La Rasa Ria and Sutera Harbour Resort,” he said. “The Ocean Wing at the Shangri-La is wonderful and combined with the orang-utan sanctuary, beach and dining, there’s a lot to attract visiting golfers.”

“Both the Sabah Tourism Board and Tourism Malaysia have done a good job promoting Sabah. The product is excellent. Sabah just needs more word-of-mouth endorsement and more golf visitors will come.”

He said the Dalit Bay Golf Course was challenging, but playable for average golfers.

What is Sudden Cardiac Death Syndrome (SUDS);

How a person can be saved from SUDS? Dr. Gumpanart Veerakul and Dr. Koonlawee Nademanee of Bangkok Heart Hospital speak at a media conference

S

udden cardiac death syndrome (SUDS), also called cardiac arrest, can be triggered by a sudden heart arrhythmia that causes the heart to beat erratically and then completely stop. Although the terms are commonly confused, cardiac arrest is not the same as a heart attack. Heart attacks are caused by a partial or complete blockage of a coronary artery, which obstructs blood flow to the heart, killing part of the heart muscle. Causes and risk factors of sudden cardiac death include (not inclusive): abnormal heart rhythms (arrhythmias), previous heart attack, coronary artery disease, smoking, high cholesterol, Wolff-ParkinsonWhite Syndrome, ventricular tachycardia or ventricular fibrillation after a heart attack, congenital heart defects, history of fainting, and heart failure, obesity, diabetes, and drug abuse. Treatment of sudden cardiac arrest is an emergency, and action must be taken immediately. While death can occur within minutes of cardiac arrest, patients can sometimes be saved with immediate cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). The ideal treatment, however, is prevention. Bangkok Heart Hospital cardiologist Dr. Gumpanart Veerakul and world- renowned cardiologist and

Dr. Gumpanart Veerakul and Dr. Koonlawee Nademanee

Bangkok Hospital’s Pacific Rim Electrophysiology R e s e a r c h I n s t i t u t e Pr e s i d e n t D r. Ko o n l a w e e Nademanee recently held a media conference to enlighten newsmen about SUDS, treatments to prevent cardiac arrest and measures taken to avoid the risk of falling prey to the syndrome. According to Dr. Gumpanart, sudden cardiac death (SCD) is referred to as an unexpected natural death occuring within one hour of a cardiac event. In the majority of cases (95%), SCD occurred in patients who already had underlying heart disease, such as coronar y arter y disease or hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. In about 5% of cases, SCD occurred in patients with normal heart structures – Brugada syndrome (BS) has been found to be responsible for at least one fifth of those cases. SCD among apparently healthy individuals has a much higher prevalence in Southeast Asian countries, and has gone under different names such as bangungut (to rise and moan in sleep) in the Philippines, pokkuri (sudden death) in Japan, and lai tai (death during sleep) in Thailand. Sudden unexplained death syndrome (SUDS) or sudden unexplained nocturnal death (SUND) was first noted by the Center for Disease Control (CDC) following the mysterious death of Asian refugees in the US in 1977, Dr. Gumpanart pointed.

April 2012 47

2. Male victims outnumbered female victims by a ratio of 8:1. 3. The typical ECG marker can be transiently normalized and the diagnostic sensitivity can be enhanced by either placement of V1 and V2 ECG leads in the higher intercostal space or with the use of a sodium channel blocker. 4. Almost none of the SUDS victims had structural heart disease – polymorphic VT or ventricular fibrillation (VF) was inducible in 90% of cases. 5. Spontaneously occurring polymorphic VT or VF are the cause of death and sometimes these lethal rhythms are self-terminated. 6. In lai tai survivors, an ICD (implantable cardiovertor defibrillator) implantation effectively prevented death from ventricular fibrillation, which has an annual recurrence rate of 20%.

SCD and Brugada syndrome In 1992, brothers Pedro and Josep Brugada first described 8 victims from Europe and North America who suffered syncope or ventricular fibrillation arrest. All of them had characteristic ECG markers in V1-3 (precordial ST elevation in V1-3) and no structural heart disease. Currently, Brugada syndrome (BS) is a known as a worldwide hereditary disease that is responsible for at least 20% of sudden death in patients with normal heart structures. Lai tai and Brugada syndrome The relationship between lai tai and BS was established way back in 1994 by following a study by a group of Thai investigators which included now practising cardiologists Dr. Koonlawee and Dr. Gumpanart. Since then, the terms lai tai, SUDS and Brugada syndrome have had similar meaning. Later, two randomized landmark trials, Defibrillator vs. beta-blocker in unexplained death Thailand (DEBUT) and SUDSPAC, were conducted in collaboration with other investigators from several academic centers. The key findings are summarized below:

7. In about 30% of patients, genetic defects (mutations) can be detected in the gene encoding the cardiac sodium channel and resulted in lossof-function or no function. 8. Prophylactic ICD implantation in asymptomatic Brugada’s cases may not be indicated as the prevalence of VF is relative low and insignificant. Dr. Koonlawee said: “Treatments to prevent cardiac arrest, as well as subsequent episodes, include Implantable cardiac defibrillators (ICD), catheter ablation and medications. ICD can automatically resuscitate the patient immediately after cardiac arrest. Catheter ablation disables specific areas of the heart from which the arrhythmia originates. Medications, such as ACE inhibitors and beta blockers, can control heart arrhythmias and treat associated conditions.” Speaking about measures to be taken by persons at risk for SUDS, Dr. Koonlawee observed: “If you have coronary artery disease - and even if you do not- there are certain lifestyle changes you can make to reduce your risk of sudden cardiac arrest. Notable changes are quitting smoking, losing weight, exercising regularly, following a low-fat diet, managing diabetes and managing other health conditions, including high blood pressure and cholesterol.”

1. 90% of the lai tai survivors had characteristic ECG abnormalities similar to what was reported as the Brugada syndrome. For more information or to schedule an appointment with the doctor, please call (+66) 2310-3000 or 1719 (local mobile calls only) 48 April 2012

Top Golf Course

World’s Top 10 Golf Courses

St. Andrews Old Course Arnold Palmer is synonymous with golf. He’s won a whopping 92 championships and has gained much acclaim as a course designer. Palmer has designed some of the best fairways in the world. But what goes into making a challenging, enjoyable golf course? As for Arnie, his must-list includes: budget, style or type, terrain features, water source, soil, prevailing winds, vegetation, environmentally-sensitive area, safety, and most importantly, variety of holes. Based on these requirements, a leading TV and print media company has put together the below list of the world’s top 10 golf courses. Enjoy reading about (...and playing) these most beautiful golf courses. Muirfield Village GC Gullane, Scotland, United Kingdom T. Morris (1889), Par 71—7,221 yards Home to the world’s oldest golfing society, Muirfield opened in 1744. More than 200 years later, Jack Nicklaus won his first British Open here on the storied greens near Edinburgh. Most golfers consider Muirfield to be a particularly demanding test of ability. St. Andrews Old Course Scotland, United Kingdom Par 72—7,279 yards Any golfer worth his or her weight in golf clubs wants to play the Old Course at St. Andrews, the most famous one in the world. Golf has been played on this heathery patch of land on Scotland’s east coast since the 15th century. In addition to the Old Course, there are four more excellent 18-hole courses, one 9-hole course, and a practice center to accommodate golfers of all skill levels. All are public, but reservations are a must. The Old Course is embedded in the stormy North Sea dunes and is challenging to even the best of golfers. For people who aren’t even pretending to 50 April 2012

Muirfield Village GC

Pine Valley GC be Tiger Woods, Strathtyrum Course is ideal. The ninehole Balgove is best for children and beginners. Pine Valley GC Clementon, New Jersey Crump/Colt (1918), Par 70—6,765 yards Pine Valley is somewhat mysterious in golfing circles because it is hard to find and extremely private. Those who have found the club located in New Jersey’s lonesome Pine Barrens say the course is one of the world’s finest. The founders started the club in 1913, with the purchase of 184 acres of scruffy pinelands. The later addition of 416 acres of picturesque virgin woodlands enhanced the remote beauty of the place.

Cypress Point Club Pebble Beach, California Mackenzie (1929), Par 72—6,536 yards The late great duffer Bob Hope once quipped that during a membership drive at this exclusive club, they drove away 20 members. Cypress Point is indeed a private place, which explains why you won’t see casual players chipping away on the Pacific coastline. Located south of Pebble Beach in California’s gorgeous Big Sur country, the club has an 18-hole course of rolling fairways. Dr. Alister Mackenzie, architect of Augusta National Golf Club (number 8 in this list) designed Cypress also.

Cypress Point Club

Pebble Beach Golf Links Pebble Beach, California Neville/Grant (1919), Par 72—6,737 yards Pebble Beach Golf Links may be the best known course in the United States. As you work your way over the narrow fairways, make sure you pause to drink in the outstanding views of the rocky shores that make up this part of California’s Pacific coast. There’s an especially good vista at the 18th hole, a 548 yards par 5. Since the wind can be a big factor here, be sure to select the proper club if you want to score well. Pebble Beach Golf Links

Royal Melbourne GC Melbourne, Australia Mackenzie/Russell (1926), Par 72—6,598 yards (East) and 6,589 yards (West) Located in eastern Australia, this lovely private club has two 18-hole courses, East and West. For tournaments and special members’ events, the club forms the Composite Course of 12 holes from the West and 6 from the East. This first was created in 1959 when Royal Melbourne was the site of the Canada Cup, now called the World Cup.

Shinnecock Hills GC Southampton, New York Toomey/Flynn (1931), Par 70—6,996 yards Shinnecock Hills boasts a few notable firsts. It has the first clubhouse in the United States, built in 1893 from a design by Stanford White. It was also the first club that admitted women as members. The rolling terrain of Long Island’s south shore gives the course plenty of variety. And winds off the Atlantic Ocean can make playing this private course quite challenging.

Augusta National GC

Augusta National GC Augusta, Georgia Mackenzie/Jones (1932), Par 72—6,905 yards Each spring, the venerable club in central Georgia is the site of the Masters, maybe the most revered tournament in the United States. Hot-pink azaleas bloom near the championship 18-hole and 9-hole courses. Three of the sport’s toughest and most famous holes are here: the 11th, 12th, and 13th holes together are known as “Amen Corner.” Winners are easy to spot, because they are given special green blazers.

Royal County Down GC

Royal County Down GC Newcastle, N. Ireland, United Kingdom T. Morris (1889) Dunn/Vardon, Par 72—6,968 yards The more than 100-year-old Royal County Down Golf Club has two 18-hole courses: the Championship and the less formidable Annesley. Located about 30 miles south of Belfast and 90 miles from Dublin, the club is stunningly set between the mountains of Mourne and the Irish Sea. However, it is as tough a place to play as it is beautiful to see. The fairways are lined with masses of native plants such as heather and gorse. Wild tussocks cover the bunkers. And the wind off the sea can add to the tension.

52 April 2012

Pinehurst Country Club Pinehurst, North Carolina D. Ross (1903-35), Par 72—7,051 yards Established in 1894 in the Sand Hills region of North Carolina, Pinehurst has eight outstanding courses and more holes than any other resort. Course No. 1 is the most scenic and picturesque in terms of design. However, all the courses have tree-lined fairways and numerous bunkers. Payne Stewart won the 1999 U.S. Open here with a dramatic 15-foot putt at the 18th hole. Sadly, it was his last major tournament; he died in an airplane crash that fall.

Capture, Improve and Share Your Game Digital Cameras ‘geared’ toward golfers

Latest digital cameras are capable of playing back a recorded video clip or single shots and overlay lines on the display to show you how good your golf swing is. You wouldn’t expect this camera to turn you into the next Tiger Woods (in terms of golfing abilities) anytime soon, but if you’ve been struggling recently, perhaps it might be of assistance.

Casio Tryx: This 12-megapixel camera marks a radical design departure from your average camera. It’s a pocket camera with a swiveling tripod built right into it. Having a tripod in your back pocket opens up a whole new world of photo ops: self-portraits become a snap, long exposure shots (for stunning night photos) are possible, and the many angles of the tripod provide capturing images while you practice you swings. The LCD even moves around: it can spin 270 degrees, so no matter which way the camera lens is facing you can always see the viewfinder.

Kodak Playsport Video Camera:

Video is recorded at 30 frames per second, in either 720p or 1080p and are saved as .MOV files, which can be uploaded natively to Facebook and YouTube. You also have the option to take slow-motion video When the tripod is folded up, the camera looks a lot more like a smartphone. Between the integrated tripod and the articulating LCD, there’s no right or wrong way to hold this camera.

This camera offers golfers of all levels easy-to-capture HD quality video to enjoy and improve their game. The Kodak Playsport Video camera is a pocket-sized HD video camera specifically designed for people with active lifestyles, allowing them to capture full 1080p HD video – even underwater – with the touch of a button. It features built-in software and USB cable output so users can edit and easily share their videos with family and friends through sites such as YouTube, Facebook and Twitter. With the click of a mouse, any swing can automatically be turned into a 9-up video action print showing start-to-finish snapshots that are great for analysis and comparison. The software features, a variety of playback speeds, plus frame-byframe stop action to allow golfers (and their coaches) to analyze every swing movement.

Samsung DualView ST700: The ST700 represents the ultimate in dual screen innovation from Samsung. This camera boasts a 1.8” front LCD screen, giving even more opportunities for portrait self-shooting or keep yourself in the frame as you practice your swing. Tips for Healthy Aging

M

ost people today don’t just want to live long lives. They want to live long healthy lives, or as the old adage that puts it: To die younger, as old as possible. Most of us want to add life to years, not just years to life! We all know people who have been very successful at aging - not just the ‘super elders’ who run marathons, but ordinary people who maintain vital, active lives, even in the face of chronic illness.

What are the predictors of healthy aging? The results of a recent study by an American institute of nearly 400 older men and women age 65-95 shed interesting light on some of the key factors. Successful aging was defined for this study as having little or no difficulty with daily physical activities such as bathing, eating, dressing, shopping, cooking, doing housework, walking a flight of steps or half a mile, lifting or carrying 10 pounds, writing or handling small objects.

At the beginning of the study in 1995, nearly 60% of those surveyed scored as successfully aging. By 2011, 16 years later, only 35% still qualified. What predicted successful aging? Clearly more than just the absence of disease: • Income: Those with income above the lowest quarter of the group were nearly twice as likely to age successfully. • Education: Those with 12 or more years of education also did better. • Ethnicity: Whites aged more healthfully than blacks. • Chronic disease: Those without diabetes, chronic lung disease, arthritis, or hearing problems fared better. • Depression: The absence of depressed feelings made successful aging twice as likely. • Personal contacts: Those reporting five or more close personal contacts nearly doubled the rates of successful aging. • Exercise: Seniors reporting that they walked often for exercise were nearly twice as likely to enjoy healthy aging. We may not have much personal control over the first four factors. But behavior and lifestyle can make a significant difference in the last three. In the study, those who were not depressed, had close personal contacts and walked often, tripled their chances of healthy aging. What are the lives of healthy agers like? The successful agers were also surveyed to give a glimpse of what old age could be like. Their responses paint a much brighter picture than the

68 Aoril 2012

usual stereotypes. These seniors were very active: doing more paid and volunteer work, exercising or playing sports, driving a car, and participating in more community activities such as attending religious services. They saw the physician a lot less, spent less time sick in bed, napped less, and were much less apt to feel too tired to do the things they enjoy doing. Successful agers were also less depressed and often felt excited or pleased. If this is the future you want for yourself, there are things you can do today to increase your chances. To some degree, the choice is yours. Self-Care Tips Geriatric care professionals advise anyone wishing to enjoy healthy aging to: Watch out for depressed feelings: Get help early. Medications, psychotherapy, and self-help most often can alleviate depression. Plan and participate in pleasurable activities and events. Learn how to monitor and change negative and pessimistic thinking. Accentuate the positive. Prevent High Blood Pressure: High blood pressure is often called the ‘silent killer,’ because it usually has no noticeable warning signs or symptoms until other serious problems arise such as heart failure and stroke. There are several things you can do to keep your blood pressure healthy including maintaining a healthy weight and diet, staying active, quitting smoking, controlling your alcohol consumption, and working to prevent or control your diabetes. These actions should become part of your regular lifestyle, but you should also discuss with your health care provider the

best ways for you to address your specific high blood pressure issues. Maintain personal contact with friends: Maintain frequent personal contact with five or more friends or family members. Friends can be good medicine! Eat right: Not all foods are good for you. Fruits and vegetables are good for you but not too much because the fruit will turn into sugar and that’s not good for you. Too much may give you the gibes, especially if you have to watch your weight. You can get high cholesterol as well from food if you are not careful. High cholesterol can lead to hardened arteries, which is followed by strokes or heart attacks. So you need to eat but watch what you are eating and how much of it in a day. Exercise regularly: The simplest, and often the easiest exercise is walking which provides outstanding health benefits. Any amount of physical activity is better than none. In short, move it or lose it! Be creative: It’s not often that healthy living is so fun. But by acting in a play, jamming on the saxophone, learning and playing outdoor sport with friends or participating in any other creative activity, older adults can increase the blood flow to their brains, strengthen their immune system and ward off depression, according to multiple studies. What’s more, being creative comes to us naturally as we age: older adults are more likely to be outspoken, have more life experiences, and pay attention to a broader scope of knowledge. The Roadster Hypercar of 2013

Koenigsegg Agera R T

he Koenigsegg 2013 Agera R is the result of the Swedish car manufacturer’s endless persuit for perfection.

The 2013 model features new Aircore hollow carbon fiber wheels, uprated power and enhanced aerodynamics. The Agera R has an incredible top speed of approximately 440 km/h (273 mph). Recent Records for the Agera R: 0-300 km/h in 14.53 sec, 300-0 km/h in 6.66 sec, 0-200 mph in 17.68 sec, 200-0 mph in 7.28 sec. 70 April 2012

The Agera R is the only roadster hypercar with a detachable and stowable hardtop, bringing the best of two worlds. This, in combination with 120 litres of luggage space, truly combines extreme performance with everyday usability. The Agera is available in left or right hand drive. The 2013 Agera R has all the features and functionalities of previous year models, but also features new and unique solutions to enhance performance and visual appearance even further.

Example of these enhancements are; Visible carbon area on the front bonnet and bumper, new front side winglets, revolutionary Aircore carbon fiber wheels, the new Aero exhaust, the increased power and the raised rpm limit. Koenigsegg was the first Hypercar manufacturer to take steps toward green technology with the release of the biofuel CCXR in 2007. The Agera R, based on the highly competitive Agera, follows in the footsteps of the CCXR as it also runs on E85 biofuel. Among many differences to the standard Agera, the Agera R has an upgraded fuel and engine management system with enough flow capacity to generate 1140 hp and 1200 nm of torque on E85 and E100 biofuel. As there is less energy content per given volume in these biofuels compared to normal petrol, the fuel-system has to manage a flow that is similar to a 2000hp petrol engine, which means that the Agera R’s return-less fuel system has the highest capacity of any car presently in production. As the Agera R is a flexfuel car, it can also be run on normal petrol. As 95 octane fuel has less octane than ethanol E85, the power is reduced to 960hp with 1100Nm of torque due to the boost pressure and ignition timing being altered to match the fuel characteristics. In order to give the Agera R maximum flexibility when it comes to power delivery, Koenigsegg has implement the latest technology when it comes to turbo materials and design. This reduces the inertia of the turbine wheel and axle and therefore gives improved response.

c As many as 125,000 golf balls a year are hit into the water at the ‘infamous’ 17th hole of the Stadium Course at TPC Sawgrass (pictured). c In Japan it is a common custom to laugh at the mistakes of other players, whereas this conduct is seen as a sign of bad manners in our culture. c Another custom rather unusual among the Japanese is how they celebrate a hole in one. Here it is the cause of great happiness, but for them it implies that the winner must pay for the grand celebration of the hole in one, sometimes as much as £10,000. c The youngest golfer to shoot a hole-in-one was Coby Orr, who was five years old at the time. It happened in Littleton, Colorado, in 1975. c The first golf tournament was held at the Prestwick Golf Course in Scotland in 1860. 10 Tips for Reducing Your Groceries Shopping Bill by Suthipong Sucharittanonta, CFPTM

twice as much as you need at half the price. You may buy and keep it for using later. However, they are only good value if they are for things you can use. 3. Choosing the right store. Presently, there are many superstores or hypermarkets that offer excellent products and price selection, discount coupon, and member rewarding program. Look for the promotional goods and compare prices.

T

he cost of living has generally risen as the prices of produces, foods, and many products have increased. The Consumer Price Index (CPI), which was announced at the beginning of May 2012 by the Ministry of Commerce, has increased by 2.47% yearon-year in April. The Bank of Thailand has increased the Consumer Price Index (CPI) forecast to 3.5% for this year and next year. We have to cope with the rising inflation. One of the reasons is the minimum wage that has already been increased 40% to 300 baht in seven provinces. With the rising of food prices, it is essential to be cautious when you do your shopping. Here are 10 simple strategies to help you beat the rising cost of food and save on your bill: 1. Make a shopping list before you go shopping.Take time to check what you need to buy. It will help you to stick to your budget. In additions, buy enough things to save your time and gasoline instead of going to supermarket two or three times a week. 2. Read the newspapers and circulars to find the best deals. Make note of discount items that you want to buy. Thursday and Friday newspapers are full of sales advertisement of the big superstores. “Buy one, get one free” is basically a technique to get you to buy

4. Store Brands - Try it, you may like it. Superstores offer their own labels and often the quality is equal to that of established brands. Do not be afraid to try. If you find the product meets your standards, it can helps you can save money on your grocery bill. 5. Avoid purchasing non-grocery items, such as painkillers, high price medicine, etc., at a supermarket. Usually, they are more expensive than at a drug store. 6. Avoid shopping for food when you are hungry because you will buy more! 7. Before you put perishable food items into your shopping cart, think about how you are going to use them. You can use the leftover vegetables, poultry, or meat in soups, stews, and other dishes menu. It minimizes cost and shows how creative you are in the kitchen. 8. Know when your store marks down goods that nearly expire such as milk, meat, or bread. It’s a good deal if you can buy and use them before expire. 9. Take a calculator with you so you can figure whether the unit price of the case lot is really cheaper than buying one of the same item or not. 10. Keeping your eyes on the cash registering monitor during the checkout process, no matter how careful you or the store staff might be, mistakes happen. Moreover, check your receipt.
