from BCC's extensive industry knowledge, Victoria offers expert advice, detailed product information, and maintenance tips, enriching the customer's understanding and confidence in their purchase decisions.
This shift towards conversational interaction is not unique to BCC. Sundar Pichai, Google's CEO, has highlighted the company's commitment to advancing conversational capabilities, aiming to make interactions more natural and intuitive for users.
Industry leaders foresee a future where AI assistants become ubiquitous across digital platforms. Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Meta, has stated, "I think that there's
an opportunity to introduce A.I. agents to billions of people in ways that will be useful and meaningful."
This perspective underscores the necessity for businesses to adapt by implementing intelligent assistants to meet evolving consumer expectations. BCC's deployment of Victoria exemplifies this trend, positioning the company at the forefront of digital innovation in the flooring industry. In summary, the British Carpet Company's introduction of Victoria marks a transformative moment in online retail, setting a new standard for customer engagement and service through the power of artificial intelligence.

Your Business, Your Way—With the Support You Need
Article by Philip Ashley
Whether you’re a seasoned pro or just starting out in the flooring industry, Carpet One gives you more than just a name—it gives you an edge. As a member-owned cooperative, it’s built for business owners who want the best of both worlds: the freedom to run their store their way, backed by national buying power, expert support, and a network of like-minded retailers.
No cookie-cutter store designs. No restrictive rules. Just the resources, guidance, and flexibility to help you grow on your terms. As a Carpet One member, you’re not just joining a group—you’re shaping its future. But don’t just take our word for it. Here’s what our members have to say about their journey so far…
Mark Dee – Dubbo, NSW
Mark joined Carpet One 21 years ago after reading an article like this in a flooring magazine. Reflecting on his journey, he shares how Carpet One has been instrumental in his business success:
"The group never dictated how I should run my business; instead, they provided the support and resources to help me succeed.
From the beginning, fellow members took the time to share insights, guiding my growth. The networking within Carpet One has been a key driver in my success, allowing me to learn and thrive alongside like-minded business owners.
Carpet One has given us the freedom to focus on our businesses while benefiting from the strength of national scale. Our groups growth has been organic, driven by quality members who continually strengthen the group. But beyond business, Carpet One is like a family—growing while other groups are shrinking. With a focus on new members and succession planning, we are investing in the future, knowing that as the group expands, so does our collective success.
Being part of this cooperative isn’t just about financial gain; it’s about protecting our interests and enhancing our market position. The Carpet One brand adds value in every aspect of my business, ensuring steady growth and a stronger market presence. If you’re in retail flooring and wondering what’s next—thinking about better profits and a stronger future—think cooperative. Think Carpet One.”
Bessim Saad – Preston, VIC
Bessim, who joined in 2024, calls it one of his best investments. “After exploring several
retail groups, Carpet One stood out. They provided tailored support and training, and the assistance from other members was invaluable. The central team genuinely cares about my success. I’m not just another retailer in a corporate structure—I’m a valued business owner with a say in how the cooperative grows.
“From the moment I joined, I felt like part of a family. I’m not just another retailer in a corporate structure—I’m a valued business owner with a say in how the cooperative grows. Within my first year, I’ve exceeded my budget expectations and know I made the right move.”
Ian Bloomfield – Townsville, QLD
A long-standing member and former board chair, Ian highlights the cooperative’s focus on members' success. “For over 30 years, Carpet One has consistently prioritized local profits over head office gains. The support from the central team enhances my business while giving me the freedom to refine my operations. The real bonus? Shareholder returns. Our collective strength makes us more profitable. We are stronger together, and that’s what makes this cooperative so valuable. I wouldn’t consider any other brand partner.”
Company Profile
Jane & Stephen Knibbs – Margate, TAS
Longtime independent retailers, Jane and Stephen found value in joining the cooperative. “After 20+ years as independents, we saw the benefits of a cooperative, joining in 2024. Carpet One strengthened supplier relationships expanded our marketing reach and enhanced our online presence. The transition was smooth, and the support reassured us of the group’s integrity.
We’ve always been passionate about our business, the collaboration with other members and access to shared knowledge has been incredible. Our only regret..... Maybe it’s not joining 15 years ago.’
Brett Haddock – Engadine, NSW
Brett sought a change from a corporate model and found the perfect fit with Carpet One. “I was already running a successful business but disliked the corporate structure of my previous group. Carpet One aligned with my values, provided strong branding for my local business, and increased my profitability. The freedom to make my own decisions while having national backing made this an easy decision. It is a no-brainer”
Mel Shelton & Nathan Baum –Bendigo, VIC
Nathan shares how Carpet One’s flexibility has fuelled their growth. “We’ve been in business for over 40 years and with Carpet One for 25. Diversifying beyond carpets, we’ve built ‘The Bendigo Floor & Home Centre.’
Carpet One’s model allowed us to maintain our brand while benefiting from national strength. Unlike rigid structures, Carpet One supports innovation. It supports our vision, allowing us to create a store that resonates with our customers. We wouldn’t have had the same success if we were locked into a traditional brand structure. We get the best of both worlds, strong local and national partner brands and independence.”
Hayden Shrive – South Adelaide, SA Hayden, a former installer turned retail owner, praises the transition. “Since joining in 2024, the support has been fantastic. Carpet One made my shift to retail ownership seamless. The Queensland team and local members provided invaluable advice and guidance. One of the most exciting aspects is the networking opportunities within the group. I’m looking forward to my first national event this year, where I know I will gain insights and ideas from other successful members. Having such a strong community behind me is a game changer.”
Damien O’Connor – Wonthaggi, VIC
Damien joined in 2023, seeking a flexible brand to complement his existing business. “I had experience with other retail brands but wanted a partner that supported my business
direction without dictating operations. Carpet One offered exactly that. The biggest draw? The type of business owners Carpet One attracts—people who prioritize family-first values, financial well-being, and genuine support. The head office is focused on bettering members and their families, making this the perfect partnership.”
Carpet One Cooperative: Strength
"The freedom to make my own decisions while having national backing made this an easy decision. "
in Numbers
Carpet One is a member-owned cooperative and part of the CCA Global Partners network, supporting over 2,000 retailers worldwide. It gives independent flooring businesses the best of both worlds—freedom to run their own way while benefiting from shared expertise and buying power to stay competitive.
How It All Started
Back in the early 1980s, a group of Aussie entrepreneurs formed the ‘Carpet Consortium’ to strengthen their buying power. In 1994, some of them attended a U.S. trade show and connected with Carpet One, the world’s largest flooring cooperative. This led to a licensing agreement, bringing Carpet One to Australasia.
Why It Matters
Thinking about joining the flooring industry or growing your business? Carpet One could be the smartest move you make. With a strong support network, buying power, and shared knowledge, you’ll have everything you need to succeed—your way.

Design & Trends
In 2025, the interior trend Nurtured Spaces is set to reshape how we design spaces, reflecting a growing focus on wellness, care, and emotional balance. As consumers seek havens of calm and warmth in their homes, tactile elements and subtle colours become essential. The trend emphasises the power of surfaces and textures to create restorative, inviting atmospheres.
The colour palette includes dusty pinks, blushes, plum, red, rust and caramel. Together, these hues add subtle richness, evoking a cosy yet sophisticated environment. Cut-pile and wool loop carpets, sheer fabrics, and materials with barely-there tints further deepen this palette, creating layers that feel luxurious but grounded.
Nurtured Spaces
Transcendent Pink, a standout hue, serves as an ideal all-rounder for walls and furniture. This enhanced neutral shade exudes a calming presence, appealing across age groups and genders. Transcendent Pink works well for larger surfaces, softening rooms with a serene touch that complements a minimalist aesthetic. In decor, the colour’s understated appeal brings balance, pairing effortlessly with matte finishes and warm woods.
Textiles in Nurtured Spaces, like bamboo and wool, lean into natural materials that encourage touch and offer a gentle sheen or matte finish. These materials provide not just warmth, but a depth that can only come from organic fibres. Their subtle sheen, combined with matte details, makes them visually appealing and highly functional for spaces meant for relaxation.
Wool carpet, such as Bellavista in colour 550 Pebble Bay and Chatsworth in colour 545 Shrewsbury, is a perfect fit for Nurtured Spaces, offering natural warmth, resilience, and tactility that invites relaxation. Its softness underfoot enhances comfort, while its insulating properties help create a cosy atmosphere. Wool’s
texture, in both cut pile and loop pile carpet, brings an added layer of calm, making spaces feel restorative and inviting.
For hard surfaces, materials that radiate calmness are preferred. Frosted glass, semiopaque decals, and silky woods are central to this trend, each contributing to a softer, almost ethereal look. Frosted glass introduces an intriguing interplay of light and privacy, giving a space a gentle glow that feels open yet secure. Engineered timber flooring, such as Corsica Oak in colour 790 Cinder Oak, adds depth while remaining understated, blending effortlessly into tranquil spaces. Natural wood tones, from light blonde wood to deeper shades, add variation and character without overwhelming. This flooring’s durability and gentle feel underfoot enhance the calming, restorative atmosphere central to the trend.
Nurtured Spaces champions the idea that our environments can actively support wellbeing. By prioritising tactile surfaces, gentle hues, and minimalistic elements, this trend offers a blueprint for creating interiors that nurture both mind and body.

FCIA is already confirmed for career days in Victoria and New South Wales and will be registering for events in Tasmania,
Queensland, South Australia, and the ACT. These career days are a fantastic opportunity to connect with potential apprentices, engage with schools, and promote our incredible trade.
We have also created an FCIA Career Day Pack, which will be on display at FloorTec and available for companies attending local career events. If you would like to participate in career days or hire the career pack, please get in touch.

Preperation & Installation Guidance on moisture testing by Standards Australia
Article by Standards Australia
Anew handbook to reduce health issues caused by trapped moisture in concrete subfloors
Trapped moisture in concrete subfloors can lead to serious issues from mould growth, flooring adhesive degradation, and more. Standards Australia is drafting a handbook to provide guidance on moisture testing in concrete subflooring, a measure that can help mitigate these issues early on.
Addressing Industry Challenges
Moisture-related issues in flooring installations have long been a concern for the wider community as well as industry professionals. Problems such as mould growth, adhesive breakdown, and overall flooring failure are the most widely known concerns. These issues not only compromise the structural integrity of buildings but also pose health risks and lead to significant economic losses. Standards Australia’s new handbook SA HB 245, Moisture Testing for Floor Covering Installations on Internal Concrete Substrates, seeks to mitigate these problems by offering clear testing methods that can be universally applied across various flooring materials and conditions.
Benefits to Industry Professionals
• Standardisation and Clarity: Currently, other building sectors such as waterproofing, ceramic, and restoration use the moisture testing method set out in the resilient and textiles standards AS 1884 or AS 2455. The development of this handbook aims to help all segments integrate their approaches and gain a better understanding of which test method will benefit their product for a successful outcome.
• Enhanced Decision-Making: With detailed information and a clearer understanding of the various testing methods and their applicability, professionals will be able to choose the most appropriate test method suited for their specific needs. This reduces the potential risk of floorcovering failures, and the associated costs of repairs and potential litigation.
• Improved Health and Safety: By addressing moisture issues effectively, the handbook aims to help prevent the growth of mould and the release of noxious odors from adhesive breakdown. This contributes to healthier indoor environments and could reduce overall workplace health and safety risks.
• Cost savings: Standardised moisture testing may lead to reduced costs by preventing floor failures and reducing the need for costly repairs. It may minimise
the risk of potential litigation related to moisture-related issues, providing economic stability for businesses.
• Environmental Impact: Effective moisture management helps in reducing waste and preventing environmental contamination. By providing guidance on durable and reliable flooring installations, the handbook supports increasingly sustainable building practices.
Preperation & Installation
Comprehensive and Inclusive Approach
The development of this handbook, led by Standards Australia committee, PL-015, Resilient Flooring, is a collaborative effort, engaging stakeholders from different sectors of the flooring industry. This inclusive approach ensures that the handbook addresses the needs and concerns of relevant parties, making it a truly comprehensive resource.
“One of the standout features of the proposed handbook is its focus on reliability to the building industry and equipping
professionals with the tools to confidently perform the relevant tests and accurately interpret the results. Its aim is to align international standards with Australian conditions, addressing a wide range of factors such as dew point, site conditions, concrete additives, and more, ensuring accurate moisture testing,” says PL-015 committee Chair, Gary Eggers.
The handbook will provide an overview of each test method, including its benefits and limitations. It will also cater to a range of flooring materials, including resilient flooring, textiles, among others. This
approach aims to support professionals in making informed decisions based on reliable data, tailored to the specific needs of their projects.
“For industry professionals, this handbook is not just a guide but a valuable tool that will support their work, helping them deliver high-quality, durable flooring solutions,” says Standards Australia’s Chief Operations Officer, Kareen Riley-Takos
SA HB 245 represents a significant step forward for the Australian flooring industry. By providing clear guidelines, it aims to enhance the quality and reliability of flooring installations, benefiting professionals and end-users alike. This initiative underscores Standards Australia’s commitment to excellence, health, safety, and sustainability, paving the way for a more resilient and robust flooring sector.
It is anticipated that the handbook will be completed by 2026.

Improve Your Business Conversion Rate
Why we get it wrong and how to measure it.
From earlier articles, you will know that I consider conversion rate one of the most significant metrics we should measure in our businesses—maybe the most important.
However, it’s a challenge.
Conversion rate is one of the most significant metrics we should measure in our businesses— maybe the most important.
Depending on the systems we use to run our business, extracting information about quotes won and lost might be difficult. If
we rely on our salespeople for conversion rates, they will almost certainly be distorted. Manually counting job sheets and calculating the percentage of conversions is timeconsuming and prone to error.
If we can’t generate reliable information, it is difficult to know how our salespeople are performing, and it’s difficult to have meaningful discussions with those we feel might be dragging the chain.
For this article, I will assume that the reader is convinced of the need for good conversion rate data. We want to discuss why we get it wrong and how to improve.
Most flooring business owners will tell me their conversion rate is north of 70%. If I ask salespeople, they will tell me their conversion
rate is over 80%. The reality is that most flooring businesses and salespeople have conversion rates of 50% and less—often far less. The good news is that we can grow our business significantly with no additional customers.
So why the disparity? My theory is that sales result in activity, such as taking a deposit, ordering product, scheduling installation, etc. On the other hand, unconverted quotes are unseen and generate no activity. This activity creates the illusion that our conversion rate is higher than it is.
The reality is that most flooring businesses and salespeople have conversion rates of 50% and less—often far less. The good news is that we can significantly grow our business with no additional customers.
It can also depend on how salespeople measure their conversion rate. In my early days of owning a flooring business, we used a very manual method. We would count the job sheets for a period of time and calculate the conversion rate. Working alongside a salesperson, I noticed he wasn’t counting all his job sheets. When I asked why, he said he didn’t count “tyre kickers”.
In short, we can’t rely on gut feeling or selfreporting to measure conversion rates.
If we are going to measure conversion rates on an ongoing basis, the process has to be consistent and as simple as possible. The
Financials
Debtors
Quotes
more difficult or time-consuming it is, the less likely we are to keep it up with the result we take our eye this critical performance indicator for our business.
Ideally, we want to be able to access our conversion rate from our business management system, but even then, we can debate the parameters we use.
Whatever parameters we use, we can measure our conversion rate if we are 100% consistent and measure it regularly.
I recommend a monthly exercise of going back two months and running your conversion report for three months. In March, for example, I would run my conversion report from November 1st to January 31st. Customers who got quotes in that period would likely have made a decision by March. Yes, there will always be some “noise” in the
report—clients who were quoted in October but accepted in November, for example. However, by consistently sticking to these parameters you will get the most accurate picture of conversion rate in your business.
There are many reasons why you might want to consider RFMS for your flooring business. You might want greater visibility of business performance (conversion rates, for example), you might be looking for greater efficiencies, and all of us want to be more profitable. We will be happy to meet with you to show you how RFMS might help achieve these goals. s

WorkSafe urges employers to prioritise young worker safety
Young workers need more support Young workers bring a range of benefits to workplaces, including:
• innovation and creativity
• new skills and optimism
• future talent and protection against skill gaps
Young workers are also more likely to be injured because they are often new to a job and may be inexperienced.
Did you know young workers have the highest chance of being injured in the first six months of starting a new job?
Young workers are a diverse group of people who may react and behave differently to more experienced employees in the same situations. They often look to peers to reassure them and are less likely to ask questions for fear of negative consequences. This is where you can help them.
Understanding the unique risks to young workers is important to help them stay safe at work.
Creating a culture that protects young workers
When young workers know that health and safety is important in the workplace, they are more likely to follow safety procedures, raise issues and promote a culture that keeps everyone safe. Young workers look to leaders and co-workers to better understand workplace health and safety culture.
The term ‘safety culture’ means the set of positive occupational health and safety (OHS) values, beliefs and views that employers and employees share and demonstrate in the workplace.
To support young workers in the workplace, it is important that your workplace’s safety culture promotes ensuring safety, reducing risks and talking openly about hazards. A positive workplace safety culture makes workers feel safer, increases productivity and lowers staff turnover.
Safety culture starts with leaders who value and model safe behaviour at work. Leaders can do this by:
• identifying hazards and acting quickly to fix them before they become a risk to physical or mental health
• finding safer ways to work
• showing their commitment to safety by complying with OHS duties
• prioritising and responding to safetyrelated issues or concerns
• having regular talks about OHS matters and encouraging everyone to report unsafe work or workplace hazards
• breaking down barriers to reporting, for example, fear of retribution
• promoting safety culture by displaying targeted safety information or installing guides and reminders in high-risk areas
The information below describes steps you can take to meet your legal duties and keep young workers safe. This is not a comprehensive list, but it can help you to understand how young workers are different to other, more experienced employees.
Provide information
All employees require a proper induction. Young workers are often inexperienced and may need more information than other employees.
Key parts of a health and safety induction for young workers should include:
Safety
• OHS introduction including how to identify and report unsafe work
• workplace hazards and risk control measures
• OHS policies and procedures
• first aid and emergencies
• tour of the workplace and introductions to key personnel, including health and safety representatives (HSRs), if any
• ongoing training and chances to ask questions
Provide instruction and training
Young workers may need extra instruction and training because they are newer to the workforce. Be aware that they may not ask for this, so you need to make sure young workers understand how to do their job or use equipment safely.
You may also need to consider young workers' skill or experience when designing and reviewing systems of work, to ensure their safety.
Use the 'Tell me, Show me, Watch me' approach when doing task-specific instruction and training with young workers.
This approach has three steps:
Tell me
Provide a detailed explanation of the task. Explain the task to the young worker clearly and in detail, highlight key elements and outline the procedure. Explain why safety procedures or steps are important to prevent injury.
Show me
Demonstrate the task. Demonstrate the task while the young worker watches you, explain key elements and ask the young worker questions to check that they understand. Show them why safety mechanisms are important and how they work to prevent injury.
Watch me
Observe the young worker performing the task. Watch the young worker doing the task and give them clear and useful feedback to support them to do it safely. Ask them why the safety steps are important, to link back to the safety procedure.
New jobs can be overwhelming, so give young workers plenty of chances to ask questions and take the time to listen and repeat information if you need to.
Provide personal protective equipment (PPE)
You must provide young workers with the equipment needed to do their job safely and show them how to wear or use PPE (if relevant).
Explain why they need PPE for the task, how it will prevent injuries and the type of injuries that can occur if they don’t use PPE correctly or at all. Ensure that young workers understand why PPE is important.
It’s especially important to check that all employees are using PPE when a new worker starts at the workplace. This will support the young worker’s confidence to always use their PPE.
Supervise
Good relationships between supervisors and their young workers can lower the risk of workplace injuries. Young workers often worry about losing shifts or their job if they raise health and safety concerns. Modelling positive working relationships, giving useful feedback, and encouraging questions supports a culture of safety and can empower young workers to speak up. It also encourages young workers to do their work in a way that is safe and without risks to health.
Consult
You must include young workers in consultation about OHS matters, such as workplace hazards and control measures.
You should encourage young workers to take part in the consultation process. For example, you could set up daily stand-up meetings with young workers at the start of shifts to discuss safety issues, encourage open discussion and build team rapport.
Ensure that HSRs are included as part of the health and safety culture in the workplace.

Compliance Begins with Classic Champion sustainability with Global GreenTag certified products
Despite Australia’s vast renewable energy resources, our nation continues to lag in environmental protection.
In the latest Climate Change Performance Index, Australia dropped from 50th to 52nd place out of 63 countries and the European Union. This serves as a stark reminder of the urgent need to future-proof our manufacturing and building industries for a more sustainable future.
Businesses often face challenges when integrating sustainability measures, such as high initial investment costs, supply chain transparency issues, and competing priorities. However, the long-term consequences of inaction—environmental, economic, and social—will far outweigh these initial hurdles.
Environmental responsibility is becoming a key driver in the building industry, influencing how architects, designers, and developers select materials. As demand grows for sustainable architecture and transparent business practices, independent third-party certifications play a crucial role in verifying that products meet evolving sustainability standards.
Global GreenTag International: Leading the way in sustainable certification
Global GreenTag International is a worldrecognised third-party assessment and ecolabelling organisation that operates under strict International Standards, verifying products' sustainability, environmental, social and ethical performance across diverse industries.
Global GreenTag’s stringent product certification standards are recognised in Australia, New Zealand, and over 170 other countries worldwide and effectively serve to cut through the prevalence of greenwashing—a practice whereby sustainable product claims being made are unsubstantiated and only serve to deceive buyers in the market. Covering sectors from building and construction to infrastructure and landscaping, GreenTag certifications provide credibility and assurance.
Empowering consumers, businesses, and governments to make informed, environmentally responsible product selections, Global GreenTag International offers 11 product-level certifications and declaration and verification programs, including the whole of sustainability GreenRate program.
What is the Global GreenTag GreenRate certification program?
Global GreenTag first developed the GreenRate assessment scheme to align with the Green Star rating tools created by the Green Building Council of Australia. The program has since evolved with implementation in other countries.
The GreenRate certification program classifies products into three levels—A, B, or C—based on an independent assessment of their ecological impact, health benefits, and overall sustainability. Level A is the highest rating that can be achieved after undergoing the program’s rigorous evaluation processes.
To achieve Level A GreenRate certification, products must demonstrate excellence in key sustainability areas, such as:
• Healthy VOC levels
• Low toxicity
• Resource efficiency
• Emissions reductions
• Fit-for-purpose certification
• Design for recycling and/ or reuse
• Availability of replacement parts
• Compliance with relevant social and environmental laws
