arpets Central in Ulverstone, Tasmania was established in August 2004 by Peter and Dianne Kurrle, with the assistance of Terry Harding, who worked alongside them. Peter had been a floorcoverings installer for 20 years and also had the business management experience needed while Terry had a wealth of experience and knowledge both as an installer and a sales consultant, after being in the industry for many years. Dianne, new to the industry, brought the required retail and office/ management skills to the mix.

“Terry retired from the business three years ago but we all learnt a lot from him,” said Dianne. Starting with a small shop front in the main street of Ulverstone with a separate warehouse, the business moved after only 12 months to a new position opposite a Mitre 10 store in a prime position in Ulverstone. These larger premises enabled Dianne and Terry to have a great showroom area, which provided them with space to display a huge range of quality product as well as provide the quality, old fashioned,
customer service they deemed necessary. “We found our biggest challenge was employing quality installers,” said Dianne. “We currently have four installers – Pete, Jason, who has 15 years experience and who is also a multi-skilled tradesman; Stewart our eldest son, who has just qualified; and Declan, our other son, who is in the second year of his apprenticeship. “We are proud to say that Stewart won Apprentice of the Year two years running, which is a great reflection on the training he received,” Dianne added.
