Boral Timber guides advise on constructing in bushfire zones Boral Timber has developed a suite of easy reference guides for acceptable timber construction in bushfire prone areas. The free brochures are designed to be used in conjunction with Australian Standard: Construction of buildings in bushfire prone areas (AS3959 – 2009), which now applies in all parts of Australia. Tailored information is available for New South Wales (NSW) and South Australia (SA), where additional building regulations need to be considered. The Boral Timber brochures provide advice on the construction of external walls, roof framing, internal surfaces, elevated floors/subfloors, stairs, decks and ramps with timber. Any development on land that is designated as bushfire prone must consider bushfire and meet the requirements of AS3959 – 2009 (the Standard). According to the Standard, there are various levels of risk of Bushfire Attack Levels (BAL), which measure the severity of a building’s potential exposure to a bushfire. As the BAL level increases, so does the severity of bushfire attack from embers, radiant heat and direct flame. The Standard uses the BAL as a basis for establishing the requirements for

construction to protect buildings from bushfire attack. According to Clinton Skeoch from Boral Timber: “With Australia’s dry climate many areas are prone to bushfire but homeowners in these areas should not have to compromise on beautiful design because of their location. These brochures provide recommendations on how and where to use timber from the Boral range such as products made from blackbutt and spotted gum, which have bushfire-resisting properties and meet the requirements of BAL-29. Boral Timber has achieved Australian Forestry Standard (AFS) chain of custody certification (AS 4707-2006) for its timber products. This means that timber used to produce Boral Timber's hardwood flooring, decking and structural timber has been sourced from certified, legal and sustainably managed resources. The Australian Forestry Standard Scheme also has mutual recognition by the Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification Scheme (PEFC) - the world's largest forest management certifier. The brochures can be downloaded online at the Boral Timber website www. boral.com.au/timber.

Jack Swinton, ex Newfurn chairman, shakes hands with Paul Amos, with Shane Chillingworth (Newfurn chairman) looking on.

Paul Amos retires After more than 21 years in the role of General Manager at Newfurn (Choices Flooring, formerly Carpet Choice), Paul Amos recently decided it was time to pass over to the next generation. Andrew Lewis, the former MD at Polyflor, will take up at the role at Newfurn. Under Paul’s management, Newfurn went from a small Victoria home furnishings group to a national flooring group, earning itself the reputation as one of the industry’s most respected cooperatives with 135 stores. On being asked about his retirement, Paul noted that many long term industry personalities had moved to the next stage of their life in recent months, making way for a younger generation. He said: “This industry is in need of younger, fresher points of view. With Andrew’s appointment, he will bring drive and energy to the role and take the fresh and unique approach of Choices to the next level. “I know he is keen to drive growth, in both membership numbers and volume, to ensure Choices Flooring is recognised by all in the industry as Australia’s leading floorcovering group.” Andrew spent 14 years with Polyflor, the past nine as MD. He brings a great deal of industry experience to his new role and was instrumental in driving the presence of that business to its present position of market leadership in its sector.
