ead Ben’s report for his geography lesson. R What is TYF?
The smallest city in Britain My project is about St David’s in Pembrokeshire, South west Wales. This city interests me because it is the smallest city in Britain. The population is less than 2,000! The landscape is really breathtaking and it’s got one of the best beaches and seaside resorts in Wales. They say the sea along the coast is the warmest and cleanest in Wales. (When I visited it was a bit cool, but it was September!) St David’s has also got a beautiful medieval cathedral called St David’s Cathedral. The city is called St David’s because the famous saint, St David, was born here. He was important for spreading Christianity in the fifth century. As a result, St David’s became the centre of Christianity in the Middle Ages. Once, the city was as important as a trip to Rome for pilgrims. St David said ‘people should do the little things in life’. In fact St David’s is more traditional than other parts of Wales. One thing I noticed when I was there is that there are none of those shops you usually get in bigger cities. The reason for this is that St David’s is inside a National Park, so big chain stores can’t open here. So, it’s not as trendy or commercialised as other parts of Wales, but I think that’s a good thing. One of the coolest facts about St David’s is that, although it’s the smallest city in the UK, it’s got the fastest growing alternative local industries in the UK. There are crafts, organic farming and ecotourism. TYF adventure holiday centre is famous. It’s one of the most eco-friendly activity centres in the world; it only uses green electricity and thousands of people come here every year.
