The Baltic Sea is one of the most heavily trafficked sea areas in the world. Oil tankers, passenger ferries and cargo ships plough the already heavily polluted sea, unfortunately resulting in accidental and illegal pollution incidents every year. There are several examples of oil spills in the Baltic which have resulted in oiled birds and thousands of birds are estimated to die every year because of small accidental or illegal spills. There are several legal, ethical, conservational and public opinion arguments for rehabilitating oiled animals. This guide aims to provide basic knowledge for both volunteers and representatives of national and regional authorities on how oiled wildlife rehabilitation can be carried out and which methods should be used
