PUBLISHER’S LETTER

Time to Party!

T

he last time I felt this way was back on January 1, 1981 when I was an 18 year old freshman at UGA storming the field right after we beat Notre Dame for the National Championship. Of course, at the time I didn’t think I would have to wait longer than Moses was in the desert to experience that same jubilation.

I was lucky enough to be in Athens during the “Golden Years” of UGA football. I never saw Georgia lose in Sanford Stadium from my freshman year until the final game of my senior year when Auburn managed to squeeze out a narrow victory. I remember everyone in the stands during that game looking around at each other wondering what just happened.

After I graduated, there were many years I would be “off the Dawgs” for the week following a loss to Florida. I would have to go to a movie during a Georgia game to keep from watching the game. This was my way of punishing the Dawgs for disappointing me.

Then the following week, after a win, I would, of course, be back “on the Dawgs.” This year when Bama crushed us in the SEC championship game, I once again was “off the Dawgs.” So, when Georgia played Michigan in the first playoff game I went to see Sing 2 at the theater. Once we beat Michigan I was back “on the Dawgs,” and like many of you, I was ecstatic to see Georgia finally beat Alabama and win the National Championship. As I watched the final seconds tick down, I fondly recalled storming the field with my buddies during the celebration back in 1981. For a brief moment I felt 18 years old again! In this issue, you’ll find many other reasons and ways to celebrate. So go party like it’s 1981 – or 2022!

They’re stopping in to pick out their party bouquets from the fabulous floral design mobile unit, Merci Bouquet Flower Truck. Look for Miss Indigo or “Indy,” as she’s lovingly known, at pop-ups in locations around the island, at markets and other special events to supply fresh cut flowers for your home and event needs. don’t want to rent, and want to invest in some new wardrobe items that you’re sure will be appropriate for your social event schedule, here are some guidelines to suits, tuxedos, and the ubiquitous dinner jacket. Most obviously, you can differentiate a tuxedo from a suit by the fact that it has satin lapels and accents. Satin (or occasionally grosgrain) facing is used on a tuxedo’s lapels, buttons, and pocket piping, as well as down the side of the pant legs. The lapels of a tuxedo also differ

The Place ... As soon as you have a solid starting point

with the number of attendees you can expect and a budget to follow, you can secure your venue. You should start scouting for appropriate places for consideration as early as possible, as booking availability can be limited. If you have a certain venue in mind, you may have to work around their bookings, so it’s important to know whether your event dates are set in stone. Location is important. You want to choose a venue that is easy for your guests to get to. It should have plenty of parking available. If you have out-of-town-guests, it should be near accommodations and convenient to the airports. Take into consideration whether transportation for guests will be required to take them to/from planned activities or their accommodations to the event venue. Make sure the venue has the capacity and size to accommodate your guests. This can be a bit Beautiful bride Rebecca Gabriel descends the stairs at LaughingHouse Manor.

Make it personal! Incorporate your branding wherever possible when hosting corporate or non-profit events. If it’s a family party, add special touches that are meaningful to family members, like your great-grandmother’s apron design or a sketch of the beach cottage where you spent your summers together. If you’re setting aside a photo area, use your brand on the backdrop. At Elegant Island Living’s 10-year anniversary party, we had

Activities for guys are plentiful here too, fellas, so gather the groomsmen or rally the college chums. One of our main attractions here is golf. Not only is St. Simons Island home to the RSM Classic PGA Tour event hosted by our local golf legend, Davis Love III each November, the Golden Isles boasts some very fine golf courses on which to play year-round. In addition to the better-known courses on Sea Island and St. Simons Island, Brunswick Country Club features a course that is an original 1938 Donald Ross design, and Jekyll Island offers play on four different courses. Tee ‘em up! Another popular activity is fishing. Whether you’re looking for an offshore or inshore charter, there are numerous options available. Kayak fishing and tours are perfect for getting out in the marshes and rivers. Even if you’re not catching anything, the wildlife and the surroundings make it worth the trip. We recommend keeping a camera handy and having a waterproof protector for your phone. If you’re here during football season, you’ll find big screens, beer, and avid Bulldawg fans

specials. If a big shindig is up your alley, make

The Fun & Games ...

K

ids’ birthday parties may not rise to the level of gala events or a big

wedding weekend when it comes to planning, but they deserve some

attention too. Here are some quick tips to make your kids’ birthday party a smashing success. Start with a creative theme and eye-catching décor. Bring to life their favorite book or movie. Recreate an old-fashioned sweet shop or soda fountain. Make it a virtual day at the zoo or walk with the dinosaurs. Bright, bold, colors and balloons galore will give the party a festive feel right from the get-go. Remember to check out party stores and local rental shops early on in the planning stages to find out whether you can get what you need here, or you’ll have to shop online or contact a party décor company like The Enchanted Frog to pull off the theme and look you have in mind. Of course, you’ll want to send out cute custom invitations to match the theme and make plans to have a cake made or get what you need to DIY your own. If you don’t want to go all out for a custom cake, it’s easy to dress up a storebought cake with icing and candy. In addition to the essential ice cream and cake, it’s always a good idea to serve other snack food and offer a healthy choice like fruit. Even veggies can be fun when cut and served in creative ways. If your party lasts longer than a couple hours, plan on offering heartier options like chicken fingers or sliders to keep the kids (and adults who accompany them!) from getting hungry and cranky. Easy to eat finger foods that won’t make a mess are your best bet. If the kids are older, it’s hard to go wrong with a taco bar. LEFT: Barbara Ann Mazzotta of Letz Face It…This is Fun! For kids and adults alike, a photo booth with lots of props adds an element of fun to any party. What to use for props? Hats, sunglasses, wigs, boas, scarves, signs, flower leis, toy necklaces, goofy headbands, party masks, pirate eye patches, easy-on/easy-off costumes – your imagination is the limit! While this doesn’t need to be a professional set-up, and is an easy DIY entertainment option, you might consider hiring a pro. Photographers like Studio Pixel Pop who offer photo booths have everything you need all ready to go and can provide you with high quality snaps of the fun. These photos are terrific take-aways from the event and often treasured memories of time with friends. If possible, you want to be able to print photos on site and provide digital copies to guests instantly. What’s a party without games? Include some in your festivities even if it’s simply a “guess how many” based on your party theme. You can use jelly beans, gumballs, M&Ms, gold coins, golf tees, golf balls, Legos, animal crackers, etc. Have your guests enter their guess with their name on a slip of paper & put it into a pail or box. The closest guess to the actual number of items in the jar or container wins a prize. Of course, if you’re looking for something less

Piñatas don’t have to be filled with candy. Some non-candy prizes that work well are glow sticks, mini bubbles, toy animals, dinosaurs, and cars, little rubber ducks, temporary tattoos and stickers, erasers, bouncy balls, mini slinkies, snack bags of goldfish crackers or fruit snacks, stampers, mini pens, toy rings and necklaces, small containers of play doh, silly putty, or slime. If you’re filling the piñata for adults, plastic mini bottles of booze and hot sauce are good starters. Ring pops are still a big hit. Cheap bottle openers and key chains, glow bracelets, and gum can round out the mix. If you want to invest a little more, you can always throw in a few inexpensive gift cards, scratch-off lottery tickets, or movie tickets.

The Takeaways ...

W

hile every party host and event planner wants to make sure their guests leave with the best memories and keepsakes from the event, it’s

important that the hosts also have something to commemorate the occasion. Be sure to have guest books for attendees to sign and make sure you’re capturing the fun for posterity with photos and video. If you’d like something more elaborate than a guest book, request that guests write down and share a piece of advice, a favorite moment from the event, a quote or song that’s special to them, and leave it in a box or fishbowl at the event. For birthday parties or special holiday events, a creative and especially poignant idea is to have a special table set aside for cards or

Wedding Season

.WISDOM.

W

hile we just wrapped up my favorite time of the year, wedding season comes in a close second. The dresses, the food, the parties, the family and friends they gather…I love ALL of it. Not much can dampen this love-filled occasion and by following these etiquette tips, you are guaranteed to have the best season of all. When you receive an invitation to a wedding, there is one very important thing I want you to remember: You have been selected by the groom or bride to witness one of the biggest moments of his or her life. Do not take this for granted. Be thankful, gracious, and make an effort to get to know other guests. You each mean a great deal to the happy couple.

Some other things to keep in mind:

Dress the Part. Does the invitation

expensive and there is a guest list. If your name is the only name on the envelope, then you are the only one invited, no plusone. Period. End of story. If the bride and groom mean for you to bring a date, your envelope will read “Ms. Eleanor Louise Wall and Guest.”

Grab a Babysitter. Unless your child is in Arrive on Time. I know you like to

be fashionably late, but in this case, it’s not appropriate. Walking in after the bride is NOT acceptable. I always try to arrive thirty minutes before the wedding invitation states. This gives you time to find your seat and speak to those around you.

SPEND VALENTINE’S DAY WITH THE SYMPHONY The Coastal Symphony of Georgia will return to their “home” stage at Brunswick High School on Monday, February 14 to perform their program “Love and Loss.” The concert begins with Siren Sounds Waltz, a clever work by brilliant young English composer Alma Deutscher, that turns the ugly sounds of the world into something more beautiful through music. Next will be an arrangement that presents many of the best-known songs from Gershwin’s beloved opera, Porgy and Bess. To conclude, the orchestra will recreate the story of Romeo and Juliet using prominent musical episodes from Prokofiev’s masterpiece, varied in tone and intention, from beginning

to tragic end. This night of music that embodies beauty, love, and tragic loss will begin at 8:00 p.m. Tickets can be purchased at coastalsymphonyofgeorgia.org.

Brunswick Aviator Made History with Transcontinental Flight

L

ieutenant William DeVoe Coney was the first person to successfully complete a solo transcontinental flight in under 24 hours. In February 1921, Coney made the 2,070-mile flight from San Diego’s Rockwell Field to Pablo Beach, today’s Jacksonville Beach, in a record-breaking flying time of 22 hours and 27 minutes.

Born in Atlanta in 1893, Coney spent most of his childhood in Brunswick. His parents were Martha Ann Dillon Coney and Edgar Fairchild Coney. His father was a partner in both the South Atlantic Towing Company and Coney & Parker, a local coal and coke business. William DeVoe Coney went to Georgia Institute of Technology before entering the Army Air Service in 1917. He spent most of World War I as a flying instructor. At the time of his solo attempt, he was a member of the 91st Aero Squadron. Coney’s plane was a DeHaviland-4, a large biplane leftover from World War I. The plane’s inauspicious nickname was the “flying coffin” because it was large and unwieldy to fly. The 27-year-old pilot worked with mechanics at Rockwell Field to enlarge the fuel tanks in his airplane to necessitate only one refueling stop, planned for the halfway point at Dallas’ Love Field. Lt. Coney took off from San Diego on February 21st at 6:55 p.m., carrying a package of

official mail from the commander of Naval Air Station San Diego to the commander of Naval Air Station Pensacola, two bottles of hot coffee, and four pounds of chocolate. Ten hours later he was forced to land near Abilene, Texas, to partially refuel and repair the engine. It was a full day before he could fly to Dallas for his planned stop. He took off on February 23rd at 11:00 p.m. for the final leg of his journey. At 7:27 a.m. the next morning, Lt. Coney landed on the sands of Pablo Beach, breaking the airtime record. He was greeted by well-wishers, including many of his relatives from Brunswick and Atlanta. A few days later, Lt. Coney flew his plane to Brunswick. According to the local newspaper, “the entire city turn[ed] out to greet and cheer him when he landed on the local aviation field.” Shown here are photographs of Lt. Coney and his DeHaviland-4, taken during the trip to Brunswick. A month later, the intrepid aviator was critically injured while attempting to break his own record on a cross-country flight back to California. He was thrown from the cockpit during a forced landing in Mississippi on March 26th and died at a hospital in Natchez a few days later. After services at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church in Brunswick, Lt. Coney was buried in Palmetto Cemetery.
