Growing up on St. Simons in the ’70s, I never needed a house key; someone was always home, and the side door in the garage was always unlocked. But when I turned 16 and got my first car, I finally had a reason to carry a key. I even bought a keychain just to hold my one and only key, because losing it wasn’t an option!
Nowadays people don’t need car keys. You simply tap a code to open the car door and have the key fob (What the heck is a “fob” anyway?) in your purse or pocket to start the ignition. No more “Where are my car keys?” moments. But even more remarkable are the advances in “smart” home technology.
Back in the 1970s, home automation was pretty basic; we had The Clapper. Two claps turned the lights on, two claps turned them off. It was revolutionary—until you sneezed and suddenly sat in darkness. Fast forward to 2025, now we have everything from simple sound-triggered switches to AI-powered smart homes that practically read your mind—sometimes maybe a little too well! Today, you don’t just turn off the lights; your smart assistant dims them, sets the temperature, and plays whale sounds because it “knows” you need to relax. Your fridge nags you about eating the last slice of cheesecake at 2:00 a.m. while your vacuum scolds the dog for shedding too much. Even your toilet has an opinion, analyzing your hydration levels and suggesting a kale smoothie.
Security systems now do more than beep; they recognize faces, alert you to the arrival of the dog walker, and even warn you if your in-laws show up unannounced. Our smart assistants have become too smart. Ask them to order a pizza, and they’ll remind you about your diet, your budget, and your New Year’s resolution. From The Clapper to AI-driven homes, automation has come a long way—perhaps a little too far. But who needs keys anyway?!
Now, if I could just remember my door code so I can actually get inside my car.
P.S. Just in case you really are curious about the word “fob” referring to the remote control we use to wirelessly lock, unlock, and sometimes start vehicles—it stands for “Frequency Operated Button.” Now you know!

In our April issue, we’re re ecting on the idea of home – whether a cozy cottage or a contemporary castle by the sea. The cover photo is just one of the intriguing views inside renowned architect John Portman’s $40 million Sea Island marvel, “Entelechy II.” See page 72 for details.
Everyone knows the maxim “a man’s home is his castle,” but what does home mean to you? A cozy cottage? A sleek showcase for your art? An eclectic display of your travels? A fun family abode? From the interior to your outdoor living spaces, your home should be a reflection of your personal style as well as your lifestyle. In this month’s feature, we encourage you to embrace your vision of home and highlight some local businesses that can help you bring it to life. Go beyond turning a house into a home—transform your home into your idea of heaven.
PICTURED above and on the cover, the eye-catching mansion on Sea Island known as “Entelechy
was built by famed architect John C. Portman as a beachfront getaway for his family. The unconventional yet dazzling property is described as “a testament to Portman’s architectural legacy” and its first time listing on the market is considered “a rare opportunity to reside in a space where the boundaries between art, architecture, and nature dissolve into a unified, transcendent experience.” For more information on this architectural masterpiece, turn to page 72.

She has been painting and practicing photography since 1990. Bettina is the founder and Director of a new organization called CAAGA, the Contemporary Art Alliance of Georgia. She uses light, shadow, and expression to evoke emotion, compelling viewers to see beyond the surface and recognizetheir shared responsibilityin protecting thesespecies. One of my favorite things about the weather turning warmer is watching butterflies dancing around the plant material in our landscape.Beingmindful of what plant material is planted to attract butterflies is an interest of mine and seeing how easy and fun it is to do, I am sure that you will pull your sleeves up and join me.
There are over 160 species of butterflies in Georgiaand mostlandscapescan lure 30+ species without trying. While most landscapes will attract butterflies, there are a few extra details you can add to attract more species and/or specific species of butterflies. Generally, all butterflies need temperatures between 60° to 108° so place plant material that will attract butterflies in a warm, sunny area. Butterflies need protection from the wind, a place to land but most importantly, they need nectar-rich plants and host plants.
One of the plantsthatbutterflies need are native, nectar-rich plants to feed on. Nectarrich plants produce a sweet liquid that is high in energy and nutrients. The nectar-rich plant material you plant can determine what species of butterfly visit your landscape. For example:
H Marigolds with their beautiful yellow and orange blooms are the perfect size for the
American Painted Lady to settle on. The Marigold Butterfly, of course, prefers Marigolds.
H Zinnias with large yellow centers attract butterflies. The Royal Purple variety of Zinnias attracts Eastern Tiger Swallowtails, Painted Ladies, and Fritillaries butterflies and the Star White variety attracts Blues, Sulphurs, Hairstreaks, and Skipper butterflies.
H Lantana’s sweet nectar smell and colorful blooms attract many species of butterflies, for example, Hairstreaks, Swallowtails, Monarchs, Queens, Red Admirals and Painted Ladies just to name a few.
H Salvia has small brightly colored blooms. These nectar-rich flowers attract a wide variety of butterfly species like Swallowtails, Sulphurs, Skippers, and Brushfoots. The big, flowered varieties of Salvias, Saucy Red and Saucy Wine, attract Monarchs and Gulf Fritillaries.
The host plant is another plant that butterflies are attracted to. The job of a host plant is to host the butterfly caterpillar while it is growing. The butterflylarvaewill grow underthe plant’s leaves and then feed on the plant when hatched. Like the nectar-rich plant material, host plant material will attract certain species of butterflies.
H Milkweed plants are an important host plant to the Monarch butterflies because this is the only plant that the monarch caterpillars can eat.
H The Purple Coneflower hosts the Silvery Checkerspot, the Painted Lady and the Southern Skipperling each feed on different parts of the plant.
H Snapdragons are host plants for the Common Buckeye. This butterfly caterpillar feeds on the leaves and flowers as it develops.
Alandscapethat provides both hostplant material and nectar plant material will allow for many months of butterfly observation. While you are watching butterflies, take note of what plant material attracts what butterflies so you can make sure that next spring your landscape contains the plant material that will bring all the butterflies to your yard!

One of the key features of this nursery is the balance of classic and vintage-inspired details. A spindle crib brings a traditional charm, while vintage-style artwork adds warmth and history.
adapt the room’s decor as the child’s tastes and needs change.
Personal touches bringan added layer of warmth and sentimentality. A monogrammed blanket is a subtle yet luxurious detail, adding a custom touch without being overtly themed. This small but meaningful element makes the space feel special and tailored to the child.
These pieces create asense of familiarity, evokingastorybook-like quality thatmakes the space feel both inviting and enduring. Rather than a room that feels temporary or overly childish, this space is designed to remain relevant and stylish as the child matures.
The layering of textures and patterns further enhances the space’s depth and richness. Woven baskets provide bothfunctionand beauty, softening the room with their organic, handcrafted appeal.A checkered rugwith scalloped edges introduces a touch of whimsy while maintainingasophisticatedaesthetic.
The floral fabric on the crib skirt and ottoman ties in a delicate, timeless pattern that feels collected rather thancoordinated. These small yet meaningful details ensure the room has a curated approach rather than a cookiecutter aesthetic.
Color plays a crucial role insetting the nursery’s tone. Soft sage green pairs beautifullywithwarmnatural tonesand crisp white details, establishingacalming, serene atmosphere. The painted door, trim, and checkered rug subtly reinforce the color palette withoutoverwhelming the space. These hues work together to create a cohesive look that remains versatile, making it easy to
What sets this nursery apart is its storybook charm—the idea that each piece has been carefully chosen over timerather than purchased all at once. This approach gives theroom aone-of-a-kind, collected quality that is often missing in overly styled or massproduced spaces. By mixing textures, patterns, and styles, the designer creates an overall look that appears deeply personal and effortlessly curated. Designing without a strict theme allows for creativity and individuality, resulting in a room that evolves as the child gets older. This approach fosters a space that is both beautiful and functional, proving that thoughtful design transcends fleeting trends.

The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) has released new limits for certain retirement accounts for the coming year. Keep in mind that this update is for informational purposes only, so please consult with an accounting or tax professional before making any changes to your 2025 tax strategy. You can also contact your financial professional, who may be able to provide you with information about the pending changes.
Traditional IRA contribution limits will remain at $7,000 for 2025. Catchup contributions for those over age 50 also remain at $1,000, bringing the total limit to $8,000.
Remember, once you reach age 73, you must begin taking minimum distributions from a Traditional IRA in most circumstances. Withdrawals are taxed as ordinary income and, if taken before age 59½, may be subject to a 10% federal income tax penalty.
The income phase-out range for Roth IRA contributions increases to $150,000-$165,000 for single filers and heads of household, a $4,000 increase. For married couples filing jointly, phase-out will be $236,000$246,000, a $6,000 increase. Married individuals filing separately see their phase-out remain at $0-10,000.
To qualify for the tax-free and penalty-free withdrawal of earnings, Roth 401(k) distributions must meet a five-year holding requirement and occur after age 59½. Tax-free and penalty-free withdrawals can also be taken under certain other circumstances, such as the owner’s death.
Those with 401(k), 403(b), 457 plans, and similar accounts will see a $500 increase for 2025, the limit rising to $23,500. Those aged 50 and older will continue to have the ability to contribute an extra $7,500, bringing
the total limit to $31,000. Those between the ages of 60 and 63 will have additional catch-up contributions of up to $11,250, bringing their total limit to $34,750.
Once you reach age 73, you must begin taking required minimum distributions from your 401(k) or other defined-contribution plans in most circumstances. Withdrawals are taxed as ordinary income and, if taken before age 59½, may be subject to a 10% federal income tax penalty.
A $500 increase in limits for 2025 gives individuals contributing to this incentive match plan a $16,500 stoplight.
Much like a traditional IRA, once you reach age 73, you must begin taking required minimum distributions from a SIMPLE account in most circumstances. Withdrawals are taxed as ordinary income and, if taken before age 59½, may be subject to a 10% federal income tax penalty.

Pink juice is undeniably hip these days, yet rosé is anoften-misunderstood category in the wine realm. One of the main culprits of this confusion stems from the introduction of White Zinfandel in the 1970s. Created from a world-class red grape; White Zin was not only created by accident, but it is also why consumers often think pink equals sugar laden plonk. This is rarely the case for most rosés which are fermented to dryness (no residual sugar remaining). They offer subtle, red fruit flavors while providing the refreshing qualities found in white wine. Rosé is not only made around the globe, but also produced by several different methods, which is one of the reasons the rosé rainbow can be so visually varied from pale salmon to intense magenta.
Rosés made using the direct press method are the most common. In this process red grapes are harvested and placed inagrapepress immediately after harvest. The grapes are slowly pressed to release their white juice while the contact with the skin draws out color. The typical result is a pale rosé with a light texture and delicate flavor. This method is preferred in the famous wine region of Provence, France.
“Saignée” (French for “bleeding”) is a method which produces deeply hued rosé by starting to make red wine but stopping the process before the wine is “fully” red. The slurry of skins and juice is macerated for 8-24 hours.
BY BRIAN HENDERSON, CSW, FWS, ADVANCED SOMMELIER, JP’S WINE & SPIRITS
After this maceration period, some, if not all, of the fuchsia pink juice is bled from the tank. It is then fermented into a densely pigmented and flavor saturated creation. If a winemaker opts to remove only a portion of the pink wine, the remainder within the vat results in an intensely flavored red, post rosé production. The saignée method, while not widely used, is utilized around the globe but is most famously created in Tavel, France.
Vin Gris means “gray wine” in French. This method of making rosé refers to making wine that is almost white. Thisprocessuses the macerationmethod but shortensthetime grapes sit soaking in their skins. This juice bath is usually over within a few hours. Although faint in color, these wines can offer a hauntingly aromatic profile.
1. First documented roughly around 7000 BCE, Rosé predates white and red wine.
2. Rosés can be made from dry to sweet; still, semi-sparkling or fully sparkling.
3. Due to its lighter flavor profile, higher acidity, and mineral driven backbone, rosé is one of the most versatile food wines.
4. Rosé is generally less expensive than other wines due to the lower production costs and lack of aging.
5. June 22nd is International Rosé Day. Mark your calendar to celebrate.
At JP’s Wine and Spirits, we offer a wide array of rosés from around the world. Whether you are unfamiliar with these delicious delights or are a seasoned fan of the pink, we would love to find the perfect bouquet of rosé for you.

Since April is National Poetry Month, it is the perfect time to explore the local legacy of Sidney Lanier, a Georgia-born poet who portrayed our area as “a world of marsh that borders a world of sea.” In the 1870s, a visit to Coastal Georgia inspired one of Lanier’s most famous poems, “The Marshes of Glynn.” It was first published in A Masque of Poets, a compilation of nearly 70 works by then-unknown authors like Lanier, Emily Dickinson, and Louisa May Alcott. Originally a modest success, the poem later took on a new life its author would never see. Lanier died of tuberculosis in 1881, just three years after the publication of “The Marshes of Glynn.” Soon, the poem would come to symbolize not only its author, but also our area’s pride in its natural beauty and historical significance.
Widespread recognition of Lanier and his work’s legacy in Coastal Georgia began in the early twentieth century. Along the Coastal Highway—today’s U.S. Route 17—near downtown Brunswick, one tree was so often identified with the poet that it earned the name Lanier’s Oak. This, it was said, was the tree under which Lanier sat to compose his now renowned poem. For many who traveled through the area, the tree’s fame was strong enough to warrant a stop to catch their own glimpse of the “Marshes of Glynn.” The Georgia Historical Society erected a historical marker for Lanier’s Oak in 1956, but an earlier, smaller marker still stands closer to the tree in the median of U.S. 17.
Lanier’s Oak was not the only commemoration of the poet in Glynn County. The Sidney Lanier Building, a former elementary school built in 1936, was incorporated into the campus of Glynn Academy in the 1970s. The notoriety that Lanier’s poem brought to the “Marshes of Glynn” also helped protect the marshes, perhaps most notably in the 1950s, when plans to fill parts of them emerged but were quickly thwarted. The most visible tribute to Sidney Lanier and his connection to Glynn County is likely the Sidney Lanier Bridge. Both the current bridge and its predecessor were named for Lanier, overlooking the very marshes that his poetry made famous.
The first of this month’s featured images from the Coastal Georgia Historical Society is a postcard showing an aerial view of the original Sidney Lanier Bridge, a vertical lift bridge completed in 1956 and replaced by today’s suspension bridge in 2003. The other image, a glass lantern slide from the Margaret Davis Cate Collection, shows Lanier’s Oak with the original small historical marker in the foreground.
