A “Kaison” Spring Cleaning

I’M A 63-YEAR-OLD BACHELOR WITH A VERY LARGE NEWFOUNDLAND DOG WHOSHEDS LIKE IT’S HER FULL-TIME JOB. My house had gotten to the point where I wasn’t sure if I was walking on carpet or a thick layer of fur. Then I heard about the Japanese “Kaizen” method—though I read it as “Kaison,” which sounded more like a minimalist samurai than a self-improvement strategy. The idea is to improve just 1% each day. I figured, hey, I’ve got time, dog hair, and a vacuum that hasn’t felt useful in years—why not?

On Day 1, I picked up a sock that had formed a strong bond with the floor.

On Day 2, I vacuumed one square foot of the living room. This filled the canister with so much dog hair that I briefly thought I had a second Newfoundland.

By Day 5, I was chasing tumbleweeds of fur down the hallway.

Halfway through May, I deep cleaned the couch. I found coins, a TV remote I assumed was lost forever, and enough fur to stuff a small futon. On Day 17, I bought a lint roller for my clothes. Best investment I’ve made since my big screen TV!

By Day 30, my house smelled vaguely of lemon instead of mystery, my floors were visible, and my dog had her own designated blanket to shed on (which she ignores completely). I even bought throw pillows that I’ve discovered can effectively perform double duty as barriers between the dog and my freshly cleaned furniture.

June’s goal? Cook somethingthat doesn’t come from a microwave ideally without getting dog hair in it. One clean day at a time.

Step back in time for a 50s Sock Hop!

While we’re talking about music, let’s jump ahead just a little to a June event that has music as its central theme: Music & Memories.

The importance of music as a memory trigger is well-known to Memory Matters Glynn, the only local non-profit dedicated to educating, supporting, and enriching the lives of individuals living with memory loss and the lives of their caregivers. The afternoon music events held by Memory Matters as one of the free programs that they offer to the community are always well attended and enjoyed. The connection between music and memories is what inspired their annual signature fundraiser.

The 50’s Sock Hop theme for this year’s event came from a recent donation. Skip Wright generously gifted an antique jukebox filled with music from the 50s. He wanted to pass the jukebox along to someone who would remember the old songs and enjoy them as much as he did. The note that came with the gift said, “Dementia may have taken my short-term memory, but never took the wonderful memories of the music I love.”

So,dust off those poodle skirts, leather jackets, and saddle shoes— it’s time to twist and shout! Come out to the beautiful A.W. Jones Heritage Centeron St. SimonsIsland on Sunday, June 8, for a lively evening of 1950s music and nostalgia. The night will include dancing to favorite songs from the 1950s to today, live and silent auctions with some fabulous items donated by local businesses,

the popular wine toss, lawn games, delicious fare from Halyard's Catering and more! This will be a night to remember as we dance through the decades and celebrate the golden age of rock ’n’ roll—all in support of Memory Matters Glynn.

For 30 years, Memory Matters Glynn has been a pillar of support in the Golden Isles community. They meet a critical and underserved need by providing education and support to help enrich the lives of those with memory loss and, equally important, the lives of theircaregivers. By offering free programs that include crafts, music, and other social activities, support groups, and therapy sessions, Memory Matters strives to be a beacon of hope and comfort.

Music & Memories isn’t just a night of toe-tapping tunes and classic fun, it’s a vital fundraiser for thisimportant non-profit organization. Every dollar raised will directly benefit the families they serve in our community, ensuring that no one has to face the challenges of memory loss alone.

Who is LIVT?

ElegantIsland Living Publisher David Butler recently had the opportunity to chat with Justin Smith, the president and founding partner of LIVT, an exclusive private turboprop aviation membership company. They discussed LIVT’s services and its mission, which is embodied in its name: Lifestyle, Innovation, Vision, and Time. Time is the precious commodity which LIVT provides. A veteran pilot andentrepreneur for over 26 years, Smith has more than 9000 hours flying all types of aircraft and running numerous different types of businesses. He has been in the Private Membership Service sector for more than 16 years.

DB: What sets LIVT apart from other private aviation options?

JS: Inbusiness for over nineyears,LIVT offers auniqueservicethatdistinguishes itself by focusing on regional private aviation for business and leisure travelers — a sharp contrast to the one-size-fits-all approach many

in the industry have adopted. LIVT has carved a niche in a competitive market, setting new standards for what private aviation can deliver. I can break it down to these main points:

No

Crowded Airports, Just Efficiency. LIVT doesn’t rely on major airports. LIVT’s choice of aircraft (Pilatus PC-12 and Cessna Citation XLS) can access 5000+ airports and land at regional airfields like KSSI, saving you time. No long security lines, no waiting for gates to open—just direct access where you need it most (closer to your home). For example, flying from KSSI to Atlanta will take approximately one hour or less with the Pilatus PC-12.

Regionally Focused, Exclusively Limited. Instead of flying everywhere, LIVT operates withinafocused,800-nautical-mileservice area where each individual has the option to choosetheir oneor multiple serviceareas, pending theirdemand, at different tiersof pricing. There are no hidden fees. You only

Why I Chose LIVT to Fly from Atlanta to St. Simons

Before flying private, my family and I were all too familiar with the draining process of traveling to St Simons Island, GA. Every trip started with flying commercial from Atlanta International (KATL) to Jacksonville, FL, enduring hours of chaos at one of the major commercialairports—navigatinglongsecuritylines, juggling restless kids, and waiting for boarding announcements. Even after landing at Jacksonville International, the journey was far from over.

We’d have to deal with the rental car lines and the unpredictable city traffic just to finally reach our destination. By the time we arrived, we were completely drained, with little energy left to enjoy the day.

A few months ago, we decided to take the leap and try private aviation. I’ll admit, it felt like an indulgence at first, but with the mounting stress of commercial travel and our regular trips to St Simons, we decided it was worth exploring. Today, after bookingour first flightwith LIVTfromAtlantadirect to St Simons, I can confidently say the experience has been a revelation.

We scheduled our flight for 10 a.m. and arrived at PeachtreeDeKalb Airport just 30 minutes before takeoff. There were no crowdedterminals,no TSA lines, andnoscrambling to keepthekidsentertained. We simply pulled our car right up to the airplane, where the LIVT pilots greeted us warmly, loaded our bags, and ensured everything was ready. Within 15 minutes, we were airborne.

The flight itself was nothing short of amazing. The quiet cabin gave us space to relax,

the kids were comfortable and happy, and the seating was so spacious that even I had room to stretch out. The personalized service added an extra layer of ease that I never thought possible when traveling. In just over an hour, we landed at St Simons (KSSI) minutes from our second home, and our car was waiting right next to the plane. It was seamless, efficient, and worlds apart from our usual travel experiences.

Yes, it’s pricier, but it’s an investment in time and quality of life. When we landed, we were mere minutes from our home. I was able to get in a half day at the beach with the kids and even squeezed in some shopping, while dad could enjoy a half day of golf without being exhausted. We were all together at dinner, refreshed, joyful, and enjoying the extra time we bought back by flying private. It’s no longer about enduring the journey—it’s about spending more time on our own terms and with the people we love.

Ifthistriphadbeenona commercialflight, things would’ve been very different. Even a short regional flight fromAtlantaturns into ahalf-dayordealthatis compoundedwithstress makingthetripexhausting and not fun. Instead, I was able to experience the freedom of controlling my time, with my schedule no longer dictated by commercial flights. I didn’t have to worry about leaving Jacksonville hours early just to make a flight. Instead, I could book a flight back to Atlantawhenitsuited me. This freedom is something I truly appreciated about LIVT because it gave me my most precious commodity: time.

"LIVT makes it easy to get to St. Simons from Atlanta. The convenience, efficiency, and predictable pricing are exactly what I need."
Tim M., LIVT Member

pay for your time in the aircraft and there’s never arepositioning fee. LIVT is exclusive because they only offer a limited number of memberships per quarter and per year. This enables them to ensure accessibility for their membersand maintaintheirhigh quality of service.

efficient design ensures a lower cost per mile flown, which ultimately benefits you.

Freedom to Focus on What Matters. LIVT gives you the freedom to buy more time and more frequent trips to enjoy your destination. We ensure that you can make the most of your time and money wherever it is you’re headed by getting you in the air faster, with a smoother experience. No wastedtime—just efficient travel when you need it.

DB: How does LIVT's Pilatus PC-12 compare to faster competitors?

JS: If you’re asking why LIVT chose the Pilatus PC-12 when there are faster aircraft out there, it’s because while faster jets might get you to your destination quicker, that isn’t without trade-offs like fuel efficiency and flexibility.

With the Pilatus PC-12, you may trade speed for cost, yet you do not trade, safety, capacity, flexibility, or performance. The PilatusPC12 can land on 3000-ft. airstrips, where mid-size to light jets require 5000-ft. as a minimum and only onshorter runwaysin specific situations where temperature, load, etc. meet certain criteria.

Here's the kicker—there are no minimums! With jets, you’ll often pay a 1-hour minimum charge, even if you’re only flying for 47 minutes. With LIVT, if your flight is 47 minutes, you only pay for 47 minutes (thanks to the PC-12). No extra charges. No hidden fees. You only pay for what you use, saving you money every time you fly.

DB: How has your experience as a pilot informed your decisions in operating LIVT? Has it helped you to identify services that aren’t being supplied by other flight operators or areas that are being underserved?

JS: This aligns with flying myself and family and allows me to put myself in the shoes of the crew and passengers. It gives me true insight on what innovations in service we need to provide to meet vast demand, while also understanding therequirements of our crew, to make sure what we offer is realistic, safe, and the right decision.

DB: Who would be your ideal member?

The Pilatus PC-12 is designed for high-altitude flying, consumingless fuel thanfasterjets. While jets burn more gas, especially when climbing to higher altitudes, the PC-12’s fuel

DB: Many private charters pride themselves on luxury offerings, is this your focus or are you offering a niche for more affordable personal service tailored to a customer’s specific travel needs without the fancy bells and whistles?

JS: Flying private is aluxuryinitself, but we—and our members—look at it as a time machine, not a luxurious pampering spa day, a convenience. Our members desire to get to their destination as quickly and efficiently aspossible. We stand out not because of luxurious travel, but due to our personalized customer service and membership design. Our members can have what they desire, yet they will not spend their money in senseless ways. The Pilatus PC-12 is still a $6 million (or more) aircraft new and the Citation XLS is over $8 million. Corners are not cut on these aircraft, and we’ve chosen them because they’re work horses that are the very best at what they do.

JS: The ideal member for us is an individual who has done well in their business or career and needs to get more out of life, by buying more time to enjoy their success. Our members can afford a more expensive and faster means of travel, yet they are stewards of their money and understand that a saving a few minutes for each trip at the cost of an exorbitant price increase is not true value. Our members are humble with their success and understand that flying private does not mean you can buy away all issues.

If this sounds like you, LIVT might be a perfect fit for your private travel needs. For more information about LIVT, call 844.548.5488 or visit LIVT.life.

A

PERSONAL

JOURNEY OF Faith & Family

For Al Brown, Notes from My Father’s Bible, started as a simple project of organizing and transcribing hispersonal Bible notes for hisdaughters, Anna and Jordan. But as he worked, it became something much more: a collection of reflections, lessons, and faith-driveninsights meant to be passed down through generations—and so his book was born.

The book’s subtitle, “Taking Some of the Mystery Out of the Mystery,” reflects Brown’s goal: to make the Bible more approachable for everyday readers. His perspective is straightforward and practical. He says, “I always thought the bestselling book in the world should be easy to understand.” Further adding,

I’m not atheologian, justa regular guy who studies the Bible, led and taught by the Holy Spirit.”

More thanjust interpretations of scripture, Notes from My Father’s Bible weaves together stories from Brown’s own life—moments where faith played a central role. From praying with a police officer in Manhattan to overcoming his fear of public speaking, trusting his wife’s intuition, and even selling a home with a crime scene, the book highlights how belief and perseverance shape everyday experiences. Some stories aredeeply personal, like an encounter with an evil spirit, a Bible verse that changed his life, and a touching tribute to his grandfather, a humble sheep farmer.

Hisfather’s unwavering commitment to teaching Sunday School played a major role in shaping Al’s faith. “Daddy taught Sunday School for many years, and it made an impression on me how he prepared and how dedicated he was to our family to see that we went to church. Every Sunday morning, we four children were put in the back of our old car and hauled off to

Sunday School and church. We didn’t always like it, but it was good for us. I now see the full value and impact of those experiences.”

For Brown, this book is a personal legacy. “It’s my life’s work and my gift to my family,” he says. “This isn’t about book sales—it’s about sharing my faith and encouraging others.” The book has resonated with both new Bible readers and longtime churchgoers alike, offering inspiration and perspective.

Hisdaughters see the book asa priceless keepsake. “It has been a joy to read Dad’s stories and his writing style, now preserved forever,” says AnnaBrown Moore. “How manykids get to have a book written to them by their dad? It’s such an honor.” Jordan Brown Byer adds, “My dad has always set an incredible exampleof how to be aChristianman, husband, and father. To see his faith shared through his life experiences is something I will always treasure.”

Brown’s five-decade career in real estate has given him noshortage of experiences, and he offers that there are still more stories to tell. “There are a few that have come to mind, including people I’ve met in my 53 years in real estate and my time teaching at the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center for the DEA and ATF,” he says. “And there are still hundreds of notes in my Bible that didn’t make it into this book. So, who knows?”

For thosethinking about writingtheir own reflections, Brown offers this advice: “Getting started might be the hardest part. It’s been said that everyone has a book in them. Pray over it, make your list, and just see where it takes you. And when writer’s block hits, push through and keep going.”

Al Brown grew up in Elberton, Georgia. He and Gayle married in 1972, emptied their bank account (all $301 of it), packed up their belongings from a small mobile home and moved south on an exciting adventure to a place Al had never been, St. Simons Island. He is a 1972 graduate of the University of Georgia, majoring in real estate. He’s been in real estate for 53 years “to support a bass fishing habit,” he says. A single Bible verse changed his outlook and inspired his religious life in1981, intensifying a desire to know the Bible.

Notes From My Father’s Bible tells his story. Al is available to speak to your group or club by request. Call Judy Scarlett at 912.268.2671, to schedule. Books are not sold at his speaking engagements but are available at GJ Ford Bookshop and Righton Books on St. Simons Island.

More than just a collection of notes, Notes from My Father’s Bible is a father’s way of ensuring his faith and wisdom live on. It’s a heartfelt reminder that the lessons of love, faith, and perseverance can continue to inspire long after the words have been written.

3 Tips for Colorful Blooms

All Season

his time of year, I am eager to get to the local garden center to peruse the beautifulseasonalplant material! I plan to purchase a slew of plants to turn our winter landscape into a colorful spring haven. Ipurchased gorgeous Zinnias,Verbena, Begonias, Peonies, Daylilies, Hydrangeas, and Phlox and take the plants home, put them in the pots and pop them into planting beds. Easy enough, right!?!?

Shortly after, I noticed the Zinnias wilting, the Phlox stopped blooming, and the Hydrangeas did nothing. I conclude that most of the plants I recently purchased have bitten the dust, so in the trash they go. Beating myself up over the money I just wasted, I decide that I’m useless when it comes to gardening, and I will NOT do this again—until I go to the garden center and see their beautiful new seasonal plants and the cycle starts all over again.

This situation happens to many people. Instead of vowing to never buy plants again, follow

these 3 simple steps to create an environment that promotes healthy and gorgeous color all season.

READ AND FOLLOW THE PLANT TAG

Understanding the plant tag that comes with the plant is important. For example, the plant tag that comes with a Sweet Alyssum gives you information for the plant to grow and thrive. The Sweet Alyssum tag includes information like:

w Prefers full sun to partial shade w Regular watering using a well-drained soil w Blooms from Spring to Fall w Used as garden borders, ground cover, butterfly gardens

Reading and following the plant tag instructions is just like reading and following acooking recipe. Themore you follow the recipe directions, the more likely the cook will be successful. Plant tags are there for a reason, read them and take notes!

PREPARE PLANT BEDS AND/OR PLANTER

Preparation is needed BEFORE you plant to allow newly purchased plant material the environment needed for optimalgrowth anddevelopment. Clean the plant bed or planter. Remove debris, leaves, roots, etc. and incorporatenutrient rich,well-drainingsoil. Include agranular fertilizer, like Osmocote 14-14-14, and a granular fungicide, like Heritage G, to the soil. Lastly, turn the soil, fertilizer, and fungicide to move the nutrients throughout the planting area. Now you are ready to install plant material like Angelonia, Petunias, Superbells, and lantana which will addcolor to your landscape oasis.

DEADHEAD, DEADHEAD, AND DEADHEAD

Maintenance for most annuals and perennials is important for the health of the plant. Keeping plants, planting beds, and container pots free of spent blooms and dead leaves allows them to look beautiful all season and minimize the chances of disease. Plants that do not drop off their spent blooms naturally or “self-clean” require you to deadhead spent blooms so the plant will continue to push out colorful flowers and grow fuller. Some “self-cleaning”plants thatwillcontinually bloomwhiledropping off spent blooms naturally, with no need for deadheading, include SupertuniaPetunia, Sedum and Angelonia. Maintaining your plants takes time but the health and beauty of the plant will be evident.

Using these simple steps will allow you more success in ensuring a full season of beautiful blooms and you can pledge to be the first in line when the garden center rolls out their next batch of new plants! Happy Plan ng!

Your Home Creating a Safe Haven

Amidst the whirlwind of daily life, our homes should provide more than just function—they should offer refuge. As an interior designer based on the peaceful coast of St. Simons Island, I often describe the bedroom as the heart of restoration in a home. It’s the space where we begin and end each day, where our minds quiet and our bodies reset. Thoughtful design can transform any bedroom into a true sanctuary—one that nurtures calm, comfort, and emotional well-being.

Start with the Senses

Creating a restful bedroom begins with how the space feels—both physically and emotionally. Layered textures in bedding, drapery, and rugs offer tactile softness and visual warmth. I lean toward natural materials, like linen and cotton, that breathe with you and add depth without overwhelming the space. Even a simple quilt, woven throw, or folded duvet at the foot of the bed can ground a room with a sense of home.

Color Sets the Mood

Color plays a powerful role increating atmosphere. I gravitate toward soft neutrals, muted blues, mossy greens, and warm taupes—tones often found innature. These hues help slow the mind and soothe the spirit, encouraging rest and serenity. Rather than high contrast or accent walls, I prefer a cohesive, tonal palette that flows seamlessly and gently envelops the space.

Lighting is Everything

Lighting has the ability to transform a space. Overhead lights should be warm and dimmable, while bedside lamps or sconces provide softer, more intimate glows. Layering light sources allows the room to adapt throughout the day— gently energizing in the morning and calming by night. The goal is a soft, ambient glow that supports the natural rhythm of rest.

Decluttered, Not Empty

There’s a fine line between restful and sterile. A true haven feels curated and intentional. Keep surfaces clear, but not cold. A few personal touches— familyphotographs, heirloom books, a favorite candle—make the space emotionally rich withoutfeeling cluttered. When a bedroom feels calm but connected to your story, it invites true rest.

The Power of Scent and Sound Subtlescent canalsobringasense of calm. Lavender, eucalyptus, or sandalwood in a diffuser or candle can anchor a nighttime ritual. Similarly, soft ambient sounds—gentle music or white noise can signal to the body that it’s time to relax.

In theend, your bedroom should feel like a gentle exhale.Through layered textures, intentional color, soft lighting, and personal touches, we can create a space that feels like a warm embrace— the ultimate safe haven.

A PATIENT’S LUNG CANCER JOURNEY

When you think of annual health checkups, screening for lung cancer might not come to mind. Fortunately, it was very much on the mind of pulmonologist Rafael A. Alba Yunen, MD, when he saw his patient, Janis Gilder.

Dr. Alba Yunenis triple board-certifiedin internal, critical care and pulmonary medicine anddirector of Pulmonary Medicine at Southeast Georgia Health System. He practices at Southeast Georgia PhysicianAssociatesPulmonary Medicine, wherehe treats conditions such as asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonarydisease(COPD),lunginfections, pleural diseases and lung cancer.

LOWER RISKS, FASTER CARE

As a former smoker, Janis qualified for a lowdose computed tomography (CT) scan of the chest. “Our guidelines recommend a low-dose CT scan for people at risk for lung cancer and those age 50 to 80 who smoke or previously smoked at least one pack of cigarettes per day for 20 years or has a 20-pack-year history of smoking,” Dr. Alba Yunen says. He explains that a patient’s exposure to radiation is significantly lower in a low-dose scan versus a traditional CT scan. Low-dose scans are also completed faster than traditional scans. If lung cancer is suspected, it’s essential to get diagnosed and start treatment quickly.

REACHING THE TINIEST SPACES

Janis was accustomed to lung cancer screening, but says,“Dr.Alba Yunen saw something different this time.” When her scan revealed a lesion, Dr. Alba Yunen biopsied the lesion using a minimally invasive method called Ion robotic bronchoscopy. Using Ion’s extremely thin, highly maneuverablecatheter,he can safely reach small lesions in all 18 segments of the lung with greater accuracy, stability and safety. Collecting a lung tissue sample when a lesion or nodule is small allows treatment to start earlier, which may improve a patient’s outcome.

I’m so thankful we have CyberKnife and such good doctors here.”
JANIS GILDER, ION ROBOTIC BRONCHOSCOPY AND CYBERKNIFE PATIENT

With the Ion’s fiber-optic sensor and camera, Dr. Alba Yunen gets real-timepictures, measurements and locations of the catheter and lesions. High resolution, real-time images of the procedure are also projected onto a computer screen. Dr. Alba Yunen explains, “Because Janis’ nodule was small and located at the outer edges of her lung, she was the perfect candidate for an Ion bronchoscopy, given its reach, stability and precision – features which are not available in a non-robotic bronchoscopy.”

MAKING TREATMENT EASIER

When the results came in, Janis wasn’t surprised she had a cancerous nodule, even though she had no symptoms. Thanks to Dr. Alba Yunen’s diligence, hercancer was discovered early, which meant Janis could be treatedwith the CyberKnife® M6 Robotic Radiosurgery System. Dr. Alba Yunen coordinated Janis’ care with Phillip J. Villiotte, MD, a board-certified radiationoncologist at Southeast Georgia Physician Associates-Radiation Oncology.

The CyberKnife allows a radiation oncologist to customize treatment to a tumor’s exact shape, size and location. For patients, this means faster, moreprecise treatment, fewer side effects and less damage to healthy tissue. The Health System’sCancer Care Center inBrunswick was the first facility in Georgia to offer this advanced CyberKnife technology.

Janis was very pleased with her CyberKnife experience. “It is the most wonderful treatment. All you have to do is lie down and be still for five minutes. I had five treatments over one week. When I think of what people go through with chemo and radiation, I could cry.”

REWARDING RESULTS

A month after Janis’ treatment, Dr. Alba Yunen ordered another low-dose CT scan. The cancer was gone. “I am thrilled,” Janis says. “I’m so thankful we have CyberKnife and such good doctors here.”

Although giving up smoking was one of the hardest things Janis has ever done, diagnosing and treating her cancer was handled quickly and efficiently. For Dr. Alba Yunen, preserving the quality and length of patients’ lives is, “Themostrewarding outcomeand my life’s professional purpose.”

If you or a loved one is a current or former smokeror has been exposed to substances known to cause lung cancer, ask your primary care provider or pulmonologist if you qualify for a low-dose CT scan. The few minutes it takes to get screened might add years to your life.

Do Your Kids Know the Value of a Silver Spoon?

You taught them how to read and how to ride a bike, but have you taught your children how to manage money?

The average debt for student borrowers is $40,499. And nearly 11% of new graduates will default within the first twelve months of repayment.1,2

For current college kids, it may be too late to avoid learning about debt the hard way. But if you still have children at home, save them (and yourself) some heartache by teaching them the basics of smart money management.

Have the conversation.

Many everyday transactionscan lead to discussions about money. At the grocery store, talk to your kids about comparing prices and staying within a budget. At the bank, teach them that the automated teller machine doesn’t just give you money for the asking. Show your kidsa credit card statement to help them understand how “swiping the card” actually takes money out of your pocket.

Let them live it.

An allowance program, where payments are tied to chores or household responsibilities, can

help teach children the relationship between work and money. Your program might even include incentives or bonuses for exceptional work. Aside from allowances, you could create a budget for clothing or other items you provide. Let your kids decide how and when to spend the allotted money. This may help them learn to balance their wants and needs at a young age when the stakes are not high.

Teach kids about saving, investing, and even retirement planning.

To encourageteenagers to save, you might offer a match program, say 25 cents for every dollar they put inasavingsaccount. Once they have saved $1,000, consider helping them open a custodial investmentaccount, then

teach them how to research performance and ratings online. You might even think about openinganindividual retirement account (IRA). Some parents offer to fund an IRA for their children as long astheir childrenare earning a paycheck.3

As you teach your children about money, don’t get discouraged if they don’t take your advice. Mistakes made at this stage of life can leave a lasting impression. Also, resist the temptation to bail them out. We all learn better when we reap the natural consequences of our actions. Your children probably won’t be stellar money managers at first, but what they learn now could pay them back later in life – when it really matters.

Ready to Ride?

As spring moves in and weather allows for outdoor activities again, most horseback riding stables seean uptick in children wanting to take lessons. The school year is drawing to an end and parents begin looking for summer programs and camps to entertain their kids, and the allure of horses takes over manyelementary-agedchildren. One of the most common questions we receive from parents around this time is whether their children are ready to begin riding lessons or still need to be limited to a simple pony ride.

Age is, of course, the biggestdetermining factor of readiness. While mostinstructors of any sport and activity would prefer that their students know their left from their right, we are very practiced in calling out to “use your other left hand!” I recommend beginning riding lessons when a child is five to six years old. Formal education in kindergarten has either begun or is very much anticipated, so the idea of being a student and the roles and responsibilities of such have been introduced by teachers and parents. As horseback riding inherently requires the rider to give and receive directions, I usually ask parents if their child has entered the independent phase of “I can do it!” Once those words are spoken most children are ready to become the pilot rather than the passenger, and the time for lessons has come.

One of the most important and helpful thingsa parent can do once lessonsbegin is step back andbecome part of theaudience. Ofcourse moms and dads want to witness, and at times document, every moment that their new rider is experiencing, but oftentimes their presence canunintentionally becomedetrimentaland intrusive.Mostriding stablesdo not have specific viewing areas like bleachers or seats, which can leave parents standing in barn aisles dodging horses, riders, and staff, all the while distracting their rider and instructor from the task at hand. Find a spot just outside of the arena to watch and support your rider; that distance will grant them independence and the ability to focus. Many of the lessons children will learn in their first year of horseback riding occur out of the saddle and in the barn. Fingers become

more nimble as they learn various types of buckling; arms, legs, and backs gain strength as they realize they can lift a pony’s leg; confidence grows as they become comfortable leading a thousand-pound animal.

Quality programs teach horsemanship handin-hand with saddle time and encourage riders to learn and yearn for a complete knowledge of the sport, not just how to sit in a saddle. The desire to experience and take responsibility for the horse, the equipment, and oneself can carry over to everyday life for young children as they begin learning compassion, accountability, and self-respect.

ContactThe Stables at Frederica if you’re interested in horseback lessons for your child. We’d love to get them started in developing their equestrian experience.

From “Vinland” to Paris –Adventures in American Wine

Almost 50 years ago, on May 24th, 1976, an event took place that significantly influenced the perception of American wine quality—the Judgement of Paris. This blind tasting was organized in France by a British wine critic specializing in French wines. This wine merchant, Steven Spurrier, did not anticipate that American wine would present significant competition to its French counterparts. Together with Patricia Gallagher,Spurrier gathered a panelcomposed of winemakers, sommeliers, and journalists. Whenthe results were announced, they revealed a surprising outcome: Californiawines from Chateau Montelena and Stag’sLeap Wine Cellars received top honors for theirChardonnay andCabernet Sauvignon, respectively.

While thiswine victory kickstarted the American devotion to a dream, these prized vines are not native to the United States. The story of the vine’sarrival to our soil is an even more intriguing narrative. Vitis vinifera is agrapevine species commonly used for producing wine.Archaeologists have found evidence of vinifera vines dating back to 6000 B.C.E. near an archaeological site in the village of Imiri, located in present-day Georgia.

Over the next several thousandyearsthese cultivars, plants that are propagated through human intervention to develop a desirable

characteristic, made theirjourneywestward from southwesternAsiathroughout the Mediterranean with the help of the Phocaean civilization(Greeks from AsiaMinor). These seafaring adventurers introduced the vine to France around 600 B.C.E. France served as the birthplace for new grape varieties over many centuries providing us with hundreds, if not thousands, of Vitis vinifera variations that we currently enjoy today, including the trophied Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon.

Upon arrival in the New World, Viking warriors with animal heads encountered an abundance of indigenous vines and subsequently named North America "Vinland" due to their prevalence. The earliest recorded wine production by settlers occurred around 1560 in Jacksonville, Florida. However, the native vine species were not conducive for producing highquality wine. Virginia served as the initial trial region for cultivating Vitis vinifera, but it was in modern-day New Mexico where successful cultivation and fine vine growth were ultimately achieved. The introduction of vines by Spanish missionaries in 1629 established New Mexico as the earliest wine-producing region in the United States. The grape variety that thrived was Mission, which subsequently spread to California. The state’s firstvineyards and winery were established near San Diego in the late 1700s. As missionaries moved north, vines

reached Napa Valley in the mid-1800s. Charles Krug opened the first bonded winery of Napa in 1861. It took just over a century for California to bring home the trophy from Paris and the rest is history.

As always, at JP’s, we love to recommend new and exciting adventures in a bottle. Come see us and explore our offerings from around the globe. Cheers!

A House of Prayer, A Community’s Home

May is Jewish American Heritage Month—and Glynn County has much to commemorate. While the Jewish history of Georgia extends back to the colonial era, the Jewish population of Brunswick first began to grow, albeit slowly, following the Civil War. By 1879, there were six Jewish families in Brunswick, among them immigrants from Europe like merchants Jacob Michelson, born in Prussia, and Jacob Lissner, from Poland.

The city’s Jewish community was active socially and religiously. In 1879, the small community founded a chapter of B’nai B’rith, a cultural organization for German Jewish immigrants, that boasted 20 members by 1881. Groups also held prayer meetings in private homes. By the mid1880s, these gatherings had grown large enough to necessitate the rental of a larger space. It was evident that Brunswick’s Jewish population was just that: both Jewish and Brunswickian.

In December of 1886, a new arrival in Brunswick, David Glauber, convened a group of 22 Jewish men, hoping to pass a resolution uniting the city’s Jewish community. In part, the resolution read: “Imbued with a like spirit, a number of Israelites of this city of Brunswick have taken the initiary step to form a Hebrew Congregation and to devise ways and means to erect … a house to the Lord, to the glory of Him and the well-being of mankind.” The resolution passed, cementing Glauber’s reputation as the founder of the city’s first synagogue, Temple Beth Tefilloh—a Hebrew phrase that means “house of prayer.”

The congregation grew to 60 even before the temple building was completed. Local architect Alfred Eichberg provided the building’s design, and on November 7, 1890, an official dedication ceremony was held for the new Temple Beth Tefilloh, attended by Jewish and non-Jewish locals alike. The newspaper American Israelite (Cincinnati, Ohio) marked the occasion, noting the integration of the congregation into the wider Brunswick

community. In 1890, Brunswick had a Jewish president of the Board of Education, Fire Commission chief, and city treasurer, along with several members of the Brunswick Board of Trade.

Today, the Temple Beth Tefilloh building on Egmont Street is often noted for both its beauty and its history as the third oldest synagogue in Georgia. It is equally noted for the continuity and strength of its community. Beth Tefilloh’s historian, Mason Stewart, writes that the temple’s story is “the story of a small group of Jewish immigrants from central Europe who, through struggling to survive in a strange new world, clung to their ancient faith and coalesced into a vibrant and dynamic community that became the congregation of Temple Beth Tefilloh.”

This month’s featured images from the Coastal Georgia Historical Society show the interior of Temple Beth Tefilloh and the rabbi and another attendee viewing the congregation’s Torahs during the temple’s centennial celebration in 1990.
