Explaining the use of grounding rings
Electro Static Technology of Mechanic Falls, Me., the manufacturer of AEGIS motor shaft grounding rings, plans to show how static discharges can damage motor bearings and how its grounding rings can “protect bearings, and ultimately your motors, from these discharges.” VFD-induced shaft voltages discharge through motor bearings and can destroy them in as little as three months, the company points out. Motor repair shops are often blamed if the problem recurs after a motor has been repaired. Motor manufacturers also suffer blame since motor users often do not understand the connection between VFDs and electrical bearing damage, believing it to be the result of mechanical wear rather than electrical discharge machining, the company points out. “At the EASA show,” says Electro Static, “we show you exactly how this damage happens and how our products make you the reliable choice for your customers by protecting motors for the L10 life of their bearings.”
More motors running on VFDs
Motor, generator, and drive manufacturer ABB plans to focus on what it calls the “mega-trend of the industry”: more motors running on variable-speed drives. There are many reasons customers are using VFDs more often, according to the company, including improved energy efficiency, reduced power consumption, and protection of equipment. ABB is inviting visitors to “swing by to find out how Baldor-Reliance Inverter Duty motors can help keep money in your business!”
New highly efficient motor/drive packages

Lafert North America of Mississauga, Ontario, tells us that its people are looking forward to attending the EASA convention and reconnecting with customers and partners. Attendees are invited to come visit the company at Booth 903 for giveaways and to meet new people at the company. This year Lafert will be bringing a few first-timers who are said to be “eager to jump in headfirst and see what EASA and St. Louis have in store.” Lafert will be showcasing its recently launched product, HP Combi, a new range of highly efficient motor and variable-frequency drive packaged solutions. HP Combi combines industry-leading permanentmagnet synchronous motor technology with dedicated drive platforms engineered to deliver maximum energy cost savings and system performance across three application categories: pumps and fans (Combi Flow), automation and motion (Combi Plus), and general-purpose (Combi Smart).

Fast lead times without cutting corners
At Booth 835, Akard Commutator of Tennessee plans to showcase ACTually OEM- and mil-spec-compliant commutators and slip rings “backed by science.” They’ll also be discussing the benefits of the company’s ACTive G-Force certification versus compression processing without quantitative testing. Company representatives will be on hand to explain how providing “ACTion! 24-7-365” can ensure consistent delivery of what the company claims are “the world’s fastest lead times” without cutting corners on quality. Representatives will also be available to explain how “quantitative testing always beats subjective guessing,” listing several benefits to the customer’s bottom line in addition to improved reliability and longevity. Akard will also hold drawings for Bristol NASCAR tickets and other prizes.
Automatic random winding machines

Samatic, the manufacturer of coil winding machines and digital motor testers, will feature one of the five automatic random winding machines the company is currently offering to repair shops. Starting with the popular Model Samatic 2780 and all the way to the Model Samatic 5780, each unit handles all the a-c and d-c winding needs of the shop, according to the company. The time savings and the “highest-quality winding with our patented tooling” amount to “a major money savings for the shops,” the company says. “Samatic has earned the highest reputation, with more than 3,500 shops using it daily,” according to the company, “but shops nowadays see bigger motors and bigger generators, so they move up in size and torque. This is why we tailored, and are offering, five different sizes.”
