Exciting Year of Accomplishments at EHS These are very exciting times of reflection and celebration – The Prom, final field trips, AP and STAR testing, banquets, concerts, senior activities, finals and preparation for summer camps. I am so proud of our Charger students! This year our staff continued to “raise the bar” to challenge our students with rigorous and relevant curriculum and to prepare them for college and careers beyond high school. Our efforts were recognized once again by being named one of America’s Best High Schools by Newsweek once again! What a year – A Golden Bell Award from the California School Board Association and being named a California Distinguished School for the third time. It is now time to congratulate the Class of 2013 and wish them much success and happiness on their next adventure. These graduates have garnered many scholarships, recognitions and awards. Many will be recognized at the Golden Key Awards, S.T.A.R. Achievement Awards, Character Awards and Senior Awards Night. Their amazing class will be continuing their educations at many prestigious universities, trade schools and colleges across the state and nation (91.2%). Twenty of the graduates will be heading off to serve in the Military.

On another note, as we look forward to next year I would like to encourage our continuing families to be sure and sign up for Voluntary Drug Testing Program during registration. The results are confidential to the family and the program encourages dialogue within families about the usages of drugs and alcohol. This program is part of our parent partnership to battle illegal drug/alcohol usage in our community with the ultimate goal of saving lives and futures of our youth. Please participate.

As the school year winds to a close it is also fitting to recognize the dedicated and expert staff at Edison High School and congratulate those staff members who are retiring this year: SAC/ LINC teachers, Rashelle Koon and Tami Yamaga and Assistant Principal, Louise Raya. We are also proud to announce that the Charger Teacher of the Year is Brian Hawkes (Mathematics) who is also the district Teacher of the Year. The Edison Classified Employee of the Year is Jamie Kruis (special education department). Finally, Edison would not be the great school it is without the incredible support from our community. Thank you to the 31+ booster groups, 1300 PTSA members, the Academic Booster Club, the EHS Foundation and the countless volunteers.

Career Center News
Starting August 5-9, all Edison High School students must come to the administration office to pick up registration packets.
The PSAT (Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test) has been scheduled for Wednesday, October 16, 2013. Juniors in any honors or AP classes are highly recommended to take this test for scholarship opportunities. The $20 ticket will be on sale through the Financial Office during registration. Refer to flyer included in your summer registration packet.
Sophomore, Juniors and Seniors will pick up registration envelopes containing the Planning Guide, Emergency Cards and instructions for downloading forms on-line. Freshmen envelopes will contain all registration materials in hard copy.
Juniors and Seniors will have registration on Tuesday, August 13, Sophomores on Wednesday, August 14 and Freshmen on Thursday, August 15. We will also have make up registration day for all grade levels on Wednesday, August 21. School pictures will be taken on registration dates and your students’ Guidance Specialists will also be available during these times. HBUHSD Board Policy indicates no schedule changes will be made after the 15th day of school. Freshman S.O.S. will be held Thursday, August 22 from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in the Edison High School Gym.
The PLAN will be given to interested sophomores at Edison High School in March, 2014. This is the college admissions preparation test Edison HS is recommending for sophomores. As the PSAT prepares students for the very important SAT test offered by the College Board, the PLAN is the test offered by ACT, the organization that also provides the college admissions test. Students applying for college admission may provide test scores from either ACT or SAT. So, we believe it is in the best interest of students to take the PLAN in their sophomore year and the PSAT in their junior year. Exact cost for the PLAN is not yet known (should be approximately $14) but detailed information will be included in the flyer with your summer registration packet. The College & Career Center web page at www.edisonchargers.com under STUDENTS menu is kept up to date with details about college information, forms seniors can use during their college search, scholarship search web sites, test registration and test dates for the SAT Reasoning test and ACT tests as the information becomes available.

Did you know? That for every 100 ninth grade students entering a California high school 70 will graduate four years later, 37 will immediately enter college, 19 will graduate with either an associates degree within three years or a bachelors degree within six years. In Orange County, 40 percent of graduating high school seniors are eligible to attend a University or California State University school. It has been reported that 60 percent of 9th and 10th graders do not particularly like school and are not motivated to succeed. Of those disaffected students, more than 90 percent said they would be more motivated if their school offered classes more relevant to their future careers. Let the Coastline Regional Occupational Program (ROP) benefit your student. With over 75 career preparation courses ROP offers quality, up-to-date work place learning and career development. There is a perception that ROP is a vocational program for students not planning on going to college. That perception could not be further from the truth! ROP is for all students. Students going directly into the work force will develop knowledge and skills which results in higher paying positions. ROP benefits those students continuing on to college by providing a practical handson experience related to a particular major. ROP classes on a high school transcript can be evidence of career exploration and can be used to enhance resumes and college entrance exams.

Arguing With Your Teens…Good For Their Future? Arguing with your teens....Good for their future? Some of you may be thinking "You have to be kidding! Living with my teen is non-stop verbal combat 24/7! How can that possibly be good? Each day, as parents, you are a role model for your teen in communication, conflict resolution and life choices. I challenge you to read the following article and get a fresh perspective on the daily interaction with all teens and their parents. Congratulation parents! You have made it through this school year. The focus of Allen’s study was to see how teens and parents disagree and find a way to deal with disagreement in a calm way. Allen recruited and videotaped 157 13-year-olds while describing their biggest disagreement with their parents. The top four categories: school grades, house chores, money and friends. Then, both the parent and teen watched the tape and discussed it. The best relationships were those where teens felt confident enough to express their point and also listen to what their parents had to say—in a calm, logical way.
Is it possible that fighting with your teen could actually be good for them? A recent study out of the University of Virginia says that arguments in the home can be a training ground for teens. Joseph P. Allen who headed the study, published the findings in the journal Child Development.
We need to help our teens learn to argue (really, just communicate) effectively. This is a hard task. When we are upset or emotionally involved, it is hard to not only model calm discussion of a disagreement but also try to help our kids express their point (even when we do not agree).
Parents often teach their teenagers about good morals, saying please and thank you and how to be a polite houseguest. However they often do not think to teach teens how to effectively argue—or have healthy confrontation. Instead, teens and parents stumble into both tense and passive aggressive arguments, as kidse older.
The study proved this, in fact when parents listened to their kids, their kids listened back even when they did not agree. This showed mutual respect.

Edison PTSA Honors and Says Thank You Looking at the year in review, I am happy to report that we accomplished much in our five areas of focus: Parent Education, Parent Partnership, Advocacy, Arts and Communications. Our PTSA Programs focused on orienting incoming freshman families, providing parent training on the Parent Portal and Edison Charger website, providing information on College Funding, Community College and Underage Drinking and Social Hosting. PTSA also scheduled speakers from administration including the principal and superintendant, speakers from our student support staff, a representative from our Regional Occupational Program and representatives from our Associated Student Body. Our Parent Partnership Committee continued to collaborate with EHS staff, community leaders, and professionals to provide education, support and solutions to teen issues like substance abuse and bullying. PTSA Parent Partnership hosted the REAL Teen Event and screened a student-made anti-bullying film, "Teen Truth Live." PTSA sent representatives to Sacramento and San Jose to advocate on behalf of children namely with respect to education funding. We nearly tripled participation in the Reflections Arts Programs and Edison had two students go on to win at the council and district levels. Lastly, we kept our membership informed and connected through our Constant Contact emails. Edison PTSA will wrap up the final few weeks of school honoring the hard work of this community and saying thank you for your support. EHS PTSA will award scholarships to ten very worthy graduating Edison seniors at the Senior Awards Program in June.

Thank You for a Wonderful Year from ABC… Congratulations to our Seniors as they begin their next journey! You are all a special group of people and can be very proud of your accomplishments over the last 12 years. You all will be remembered and missed and we wish you well in your exciting future! Our Award Recognition Program was a huge success! 398 students received awards for their accomplishments of helping others, showing improvement and exceptional effort. Senior Awards is a special ceremony in June where ABC awards scholarships to deserving students to help them with their future education plans. ABC volunteers assist the Counseling office in making this event very special for our Seniors and their families. Thank you to all of the students who filled out ABC Scholarship Applications this past May. It is good to see that we can help so many students again this year! We are looking for Student Store Volunteers and to fill some Board positions for next fall. Don’t be shy. If your child tells you not to help out, be a teenager at heart -- do the opposite and help out anyway! The Academic Booster Club is a nice way to stay aware of what’s going on at the school yet not be in your teen’s way! Our meetings are the first week of every month at 5:00 p.m. and we would love to have you join us! I would like to send a sad farewell and a huge hug and thank you to Debbie Hoenecke who will be leaving the ABC Board and Presidency at the end of the year. Debbie has been involved with ABC since her oldest child was a Freshman in 2006, served as Program Chairperson from 2007 to 2009 and
as President from 2009 to 2013. Under her exceptional leadership ABC has maintained and surpassed our budgetary goals despite an economic crises and losing several of our funding sources at the school. Under her guidance, the Student Store has transformed from a popcorn factory to a major provider of school clothing and spirit items. During her 4-year Presidency, ABC has raised $120,000 in revenue, awarded $28,000 in scholarships, supported Edison academic departments with $14,000 in gifts and grants, awarded hundreds of Academic Pins, Academic Letters and Student Recognition Awards. As a great personal friend and THE most organized person I know and a wonderful leader, Debbie you will truly be missed at ABC. Congratulations to your new and on-going volunteer organizations and best wishes in your future. EHS Foundation WANTED! Computers. Edison High School has three computer labs which need to be replaced. Our current labs are more than six years old and have not kept pace with advances in technology. The Edison High School Foundation is asking for your help to replace the labs as quickly as possible, prior to the start of the 2013-2014 school year. Each lab will cost approximately $40,000. Computers have become an integral part of our students’ daily lives and your generous donations will give them the tools they need to succeed in a technologically demanding world. Visual and Performing Arts @ EHS! Edison High School offers great Visual and Performing Arts programs! Here are some recent highlights:
This was an exciting year for science competition at Edison High School. Our students got great scores on the American Chemical Society first and second year tests and will be honored at an ACS dinner. In the Olympiad tests, students competed in difficult, post AP nationwide testing events. Our chemistry team came in with a top ten score, and we had semi finalists in both Biology and Physics. We also had two semifinalists in the Titan & Europa Icy Worlds Essay Contest sponsored by JPL. In the Orange County Science Olympiad, students compete in both tests and hands on build events. In our third year of completion we once again doubled our medal count to eight. Finally, this year saw our first ever science bowl team go to JPL and beat all expectations by making finals in our first competition run. Visual Arts and Ceramics bring home awards of distinction from the HBUHSD Art Show! Eight Drawing and Painting Students were chosen to display 16 artworks in the District Art Show. All students received certificates of honor for being chosen, and one artwork was chosen to receive the Teachers Choice award. Also seven students are creating a mural in the 240 hallway. These students are dedicated to their art and are planning to major in Art in college! Nine Ceramics students also exhibited at the District Art Show. Award Winners included Alexis Martin (Medal of Distinction) and Alexandra Cook (Teacher’s Choice Award). Congratulations to all of our Visual Arts and Ceramics students!

The May 12th edition of the Orange County Register Varsity Arts section honored over 600 Orange County students planning to major in the visual or performing arts. Students honored from EHS include Matthew Plaza (San Francisco Conservatory of Music, Music Composition), David Riccobono (UCLA, Music Performance), Lily Bryson (CSU Fullerton, Musical Theater), and Hope Staller (Vanguard University, Music Education).

Performing Arts Rock the House! Seussical the Musical is a hit! On February 22 nd and 23rd, EHS presented this wonderful theatrical extravaganza to over 800 audience members over three performances. Filled with song, dance, joy and laughter, Seussical combines several Dr. Suess characters into a wonderful story that expresses and impresses the importance of respect for all living things.

SENIOR CELEBRATIONS Senior Class Representatives Sydney Larson and Luke McCrea, under the direction of senior class advisor, Mr. Rick Meyers are busy preparing for end of year senior activities. These events include the Senior Picnic and yearbook distribution on Wednesday, June 5th and the senior breakfast on Wednesday, June 12 th. Graduation practice will take place at Orange Coast College Stadium on Monday, June 10 th with Graduation at OCC on Thursday June 13th. Thanks to the many parents working to make these celebrations successful. For updates and full details on Senior activities, go to edisonchargers.com; click on the “Activities” link and then, click on “Senior Information.” YEARBOOK DISTRIBUTION 2013 Distribution of yearbooks will begin at the senior picnic on June 5th. Junior distribution is after school on June 5th in the former auto shop area. Frosh and Sophomores can pick up their yearbooks after school in the former auto shop area on Thursday, June 6th and Friday, June 7th. ID cards are required. A small number of extra yearbooks may be available for $130 (cash only). Contact Bobbie in the Financial Office at extension 4413. BLOOD DRIVE Our 2nd blood drive of the school year with UCI Medical Center on April 25th was a tremendous success. In the two drives held this year, Charger students, staff and community have donated over 80 pints of useable blood that will help save many lives. Great job Chargers! Congratulations to Juniors Tyler Vasquez and Nick Hoskins for organizing.
