Principal’s Message: Edison does it again! We were just awarded the title of a California Distinguished School for the third time! This great honor is a testament to the excellence that is Edison High School. As a Three A’s School, we continue to strive for excellence in Academics, Arts and Athletics. Our highly qualified staff, supportive parents and community, and our dedicated students make up the great team that continues to raise the bar. We thank you for your partnership in this vision. We are proud that on signing day – sixteen of the Charger athletes signed with prestigious colleges and universities. Our all-school musical, Suessical the Musical, was a huge success. The sophomores took the High School Exit Exams on March 12th and 13th. Now we are preparing for AP exams and STAR testing – just around the corner. Yes – everyone is busy! As a staff we continue to focus on pushing our students to be “college and career ready” with rigorous and relevant curriculum when they graduate. In light of

this challenge, we have implemented many support systems to help your child – Saturday Scholars, math tutoring center, English lunch tutoring and, of course, our teachers are tutoring Tuesday thru Friday at 8:00 in their classrooms. Make tutorial a “mandatorial” for your student. As a special reminder - our juniors need to take the free EAP (Early Assessment Program) test included in the Spring STAR testing to help them plan for college. If students score high enough on the EAP it will save families money in required California State University remediation classes. Our staff believes that every student can learn but we are also very aware that students learn at different speeds and in different ways. We graduated from school in a relatively orderly, secure and predictable marketplace.

Mrs. Quay updates the web page weekly with exciting news regarding the Career Center and communicates with students via email with the latest available information about important upcoming dates.
Changing technology, corporate restructuring and the proliferation of new work opportunities are making your son or daughter’s career decisions less predictable. The key, however, is to encourage your kids to constantly review their interests and discover new opportunities. What about your child? Does he or she have the skills and experience to survive today’s job market? What about college-bound students? Have they experienced and explored their major field of study to warrant further education advancement in that particular career area?

One way high school students can explore their futures is through the Regional Occupational Program (ROP). Coastline ROP is a public educational service that offers career preparation classes designed to provide students with the technical skills required for particular jobs. Many of the classes include community based internship training in business and industry. Students can earn certification or college placement and /or credit upon successful completion of certain ROP classes. Coastline ROP has 7 classes that articulate with Orange Coast College. ROP classes are taken as elective credit and are open to students who are at least 16 years of age and a sophomore.

Edison High School 9th, 10th, 11 graders will be taking the California Standards Tests in English/Language Arts, Mathematics, Science and Social Sciences on May 16, May 17 and May 21. Commonly referred to as STAR (Standardized Testing and Reporting), these tests measure student mastery of state defined content standards.
The California High School Exit Exam (CAHSEE) is a mandated test that must be passed by all high school students in California prior to receiving a high school diploma. All 10th grade students took the CAHSEE on Tuesday, March 13th and Wednesday, March 14th.

Required A-G Courses A. History/Social Science (2 years required) Two years of history/social science, including one year of world history, cultures and geography; and one year of U.S. history or one-half year of U.S. history and one-half year of civics or American government.
B. English (4 years required) Four years of college-preparatory English that include frequent, regular writing and reading of classic and modern literature. No more than one year of ESL courses can be used to meet this requirement.
C. Mathematics (3 years required; 4 years recommended) Three years of college preparatory mathematics that include the topics covered in elementary and advanced algebra and two- and three- dimensional geometry. Approved integrated math courses may be used to fulfill part, or all, of this requirement, as may math courses taken in the seventh and eighth grades that your high school accepts as equivalent to its own math courses.
D. Laboratory Science (2 years required, 3 years recommended) For University of California campuses, you must complete at least 2 of the 3 foundational subjects of biology, chemistry and physics—both courses must be from the “D” subject area. For Cal State Universities, at least 1 year of physical science and 1 year of biological science, one from the “D” subject area and the other from the “D” or “G” area. (It is best to prepare for both UC and the CSU by completing two laboratory courses from the “D” subject area.)
E. World Languages (2 years required, 3 years recommended) Two years of the same language other than English. Courses should emphasize speaking and understanding, and include instruction in grammar, vocabulary, reading, composition and culture. Courses in languages other than English taken in the seventh and eighth grades may be used to fulfill part of this requirement if your high school accepts them as equivalent to its own courses. F. Visual and Performing Arts (VPA) 1 year required. A single yearlong4 approved arts course from a single VPA discipline: dance, drama/theater, music or visual art.

Its founders organized the first meeting on February 17, 1897 in Washington DC and over 2,000 attended. One of our goals this year is to make sure we get good information to parents in a timely manner. To date we have provided speakers on the topics of College Preparedness (September), Substance Abuse (REAL Teen Event in November), Community College Requirements (February) and Raising Teens (Parent-to-Parent Roundtable in February). In addition, we heard from HBUHSD Superintendent, Dr. Greg Plutko, (January) on the direction our school district is taking to maintain excellence. At every PTSA meeting ASB representatives speak to student activities and our wonderful principal, Dr. D'liese Melendrez, gives updates on Edison's achievements and successes with respect to Academics, Arts and the Athletics If you haven't already, we encourage you to join Edison PTSA or stop by our remaining meeting - May 13th to see what's going on!
Meet the Faculty Get to know one instructor really well. This creates a feeling of connection and builds a resource for future letter of recommendation for college or job. Ask for detailed feedback on how to improve vs complaining about why I didn’t get a better grade. Take a Mix of Courses ∗ Pique interest with variety vs getting required courses out of the way. ∗ Large introductory courses are the least stimulating. ∗ Take small classes. This creates a feeling of connection and increases interaction with faculty. Write, Write, Write ∗ Many short papers are better than one long paper. This allows the chance of midcourse corrections. The more writing the better. Speak Another Language Don’t test out. ∗ Foreign language is the most common favorite class. * Classes are small. Participation is required. Stu dents work in groups. There is lots of written work. There are frequent quizzes. ∗ Foreign Languages have all the elements that lead to more learning and more engagement. Consider Time ∗ Set aside an uninterrupted stretch of a few hours. Small chunks of time are ineffective. Hold the Drum ∗ Get involved in outside activities. Participate at any level. ∗ Outside involvement is as important as academic effort. ∗ Jobs do not necessarily interfere with academic success. The only outside activities which hurt grades were intercollegiate athletics. Breakfast and lunch are served each school day during the regular school year. Meals, foods, and beverages sold or served at our schools meet state and federal nutrition standards based on the U.S.D.A. Dietary Guidelines. Students have access to a variety of affordable and appealing foods meeting the nutrition standards. Meal Applications are in English, Spanish and Vietnamese. The application, instructions and letter are posted on the Huntington Beach Union High School District website: www.hbuhsd.edu under Food and Nutrition Services and are also available at your school site. Return completed applications to the school official at your school or the above address. Each school year a new application is required. If a new application is not submitted or approved, then students must pay for their meals. The charge for a breakfast is from $1.25 to $1.50 and lunch is from $2.00 to $3.00. Edison Scholar Athletes Honored Congratulations to Alek Torgersen and Dylan Luther for being named Orange County Scholar Athletes at the 43rd Annual Scholar-Athlete Awards Banquet of National Football Foundation Orange County Chapter. All the honorees were First Team All League and have a GPA of 3.5 or above.
Seniors Harrison Brunelli and Karley Wester were honored Feb. 26th at the Orange County Athletic Directors Association awards dinner at the Anaheim Convention Center. Both received the Athlete of Character and Honor Award. The award honors athletes who show great character and "pursue victory with honor."

ABC Supports Academics The ABC Board is excited to present this year’s ACADEMIC RECOGNITION NIGHT on Tuesday, March 19th at 7:00 in the EHS Gym. Students are chosen by their teachers for significant success in learning during the 1st semester including great improvement in academic work, outstanding effort, exceptional help to other students or other demonstrations that the student is worthy of recognition. Students who may not be included in other venues have an opportunity on this night for their achievements and efforts to be recognized.
STUDENT STORE: Parents have been so generous with their donations of school supplies and food items – thank you to all. Stop by the Student Store for sweatshirts, t-shirts, hats and other Edison-wear. ABC BOARD POSITIONS: We can always use new Board Members to help earn and give away money, student recognition and scholarships to our Edison High School community. This year, we will be losing a few key Board Members and need some new recruits. EHS Academic Competition Teams
Vy Ly and Alex Rezai were awarded scholarships from the Huntington Beach Elks Lodge and the California – Hawaii Elks Association.
As the academic competition season comes to a close the time has come to congratulate and recognize our academic competition teams. Edison Academic competition is strong and growing, with opportunities in a variety of areas. In quiz bowl, our oldest and most hallowed game, students compete in a game much like Jeopardy, but more difficult. In addition, science has had a huge competition year. Edison competed in Vex Robotics, doubled our medal count in science Olympiad, and made playoffs in the JPL science bowl on our very first foray into that competition. Finally, Academic Competition also acquired Edison’s first speech and debate team to be registered with the National Forensics League, a largely student motivated and operated effort. On their first outing, speech and debate had three competitors make finals and qualify for state competition. Below you will find students who love knowledge and competition. Our academic teams:

Sports Physicals Physicals will be held on Saturday May 18 beginning at 10 a.m. Cost is $30 with checks made out to Edison High School. Athletes MUST use our district physical form for any physical given. We will also offer as part of our physical the special ECG heart screening from the Sparkling Angels Charity. All of this information can be downloaded from the athletic information web site along with the consent form. Remember physicals are only good for one calendar year. Any incoming freshman who plans to attend a summer camp must get a physical before the camp.

Senior Class Representatives Sydney Larson and Luke McCrea, with the assistance of class advisor Rick Meyers are planning end of the year festivities. We want to thank the many parents assisting with the Senior Picnic, Senior Breakfast, and Graduation and Grad Night. The Senior Picnic/yearbook distribution is scheduled for Wednesday, June 5th on the back field behind the gym. Senior Breakfast is scheduled for Tuesday, June 11th. Graduation is Thursday, June 13th at Orange Coast College with Grad Night later in the evening at Knott’s Berry Farm.
Prom tickets will go on sale Wednesday, May 15 and will be on sale until 1:00PM on Thursday, May 30.
Edison Cares In cooperation with the UCI Medical Center, the EHS ASB hosted a blood drive on December 6th. Over seventy units of blood were donated by students, staff and parents. A second Blood Drive will be conducted on April 24th. Commissioners of Community Service, Savannah Lawton and Ashley Nunez will again coordinate this event. Students must be at least 17 years old and weigh at least 110 pounds. Permission slips are required for all students donating blood. Parents and community are also invited to contribute. Permission forms will be available on line.
Three ALL senior class meetings are scheduled for the mornings of Thursday, May 16th, Friday, May 17th and Tuesday, May 21st (while underclassmen are STAR testing). These senior assemblies are MANDATORY. Guest speakers, musicians, and end of year information will be shared. A senior informational packet, including dates and times of all senior activities, will be distributed to every senior in April.
