Academics, Arts and Athletics Welcome to the start of a great school year at Edison High School! We have much to celebrate and much to look forward to this coming year. Included in this newsletter is some important information as well as numerous student achievements for your enjoyment.

Congratulations to our national merit scholar finalist – Dennis Nguyen and nine other students who received National Merit Scholar Commendations as a result of their PSAT scores last October 2011. They are among the top 5% of 1.5 million students in the nation.

Thank you for donating to your child’s athletic team, science lab, marching band, cheer leading, etc. Because of your donations we are able to maintain the same level of quality enrichment activities. When donations drop programs will suffer. THANK YOU!

Edison also just received recognition by the CIF Southern Section with a Champions for Character Award. They recognize that EHS is a school committed to quality character education.

As we return to school the Charger community is celebrating many recent accomplishments: We made incredible gains on our Academic Performance Index (API) score as a result of 2012 state spring testing. We jumped from 863 to 872 points!

This is our goal for every student graduating Edison High School as they continue to a college and a career.

Finally, we at Edison have named our school a Three A’s School – Academics, Arts and Athletics. This means that our community is dedicated to achieving excellence in all three of these areas. Edison High School Mission Statement Our mission is to educate all students by providing a challenging relevant curriculum and, addressing their personal and academic needs, in a safe and supportive environment, developing critical thinkers, effective communicators, and self directed, productive individuals.

Our Guidance Staff

Coastline ROP

The guidance staff, which includes three guidance specialists, a registrar, a college & career center specialist, a school counselor, a student support specialist, two psychologists and an administrator, would like to welcome you to the 2012-2013 school year. We are off to a great start with 2623 students. We look forward to supporting academic, college and career goals for students so that they will have a positive and successful four years at Edison High School.

The 2012-2013 school year is off and running with over 200 Edison students enrolled in ROP classes.

ROP benefits those going directly into the work force by developing knowledge and skills, which help students to qualify for higher paying positions. ROP benefits those continuing on to college by providing a practical hands-on experience related to a particular major. This experience can give students an edge with admissions officers when students apply for impacted programs. ROP helps because ROP reflects a serious interest and a realistic desire to pursue a particular field of study. ROP classes on high school transcripts can be evidence of career exploration and can be used to enhance resumes and entrance essays.

Welcome to Christina Trujillo. Christina replaces Debby Alms, our new registrar. Christina has a bachelors degree from Cal State Long Beach in sociology and a master’s degree in counseling from Cal State Dominquez Hills and a PPS credential. She worked in the Paramount district as a counseling assistant in elementary and middle school and in Anaheim Union District at Kennedy High School. Welcome Christina!

ROP is available to any student 16 years and older and can be taken for elective credit.

Mr. Reid received his bachelors and masters degrees from USC in 1978 and 1984 respectively. He taught a variety of subjects for 22 years—choir, piano, guitar, theater and English—the last 16 of which were at Fountain Valley High School. In 2003, he transitioned into an administrative role and served as Edison High School’s activities director from 2005-07. From 2007-2012, he worked at Westminster high school, and he returns this year to Edison High School as the assistant principal for guidance.

CAREER CENTER NEWS College Application information: UC applications (www.universityofcalifornia.edu) can be submitted (fee $70 per campus) from November 1 – 30.

CSU applications (www.csumentor.edu) can be submitted (fee $55 per campus) starting October 1st through November 30th.

Most private and out-of-state application deadlines vary from campus to campus. Contact the college to ensure you meet their deadlines.

The Common Application (www.commonapp.org) is used to apply to multiple private or out-of-state colleges by using one application. Requires supplemental forms for the Secondary School Report.

Financial Aid The FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) will be available online at www.fafsa.ed.gov in December. The earliest submission date is January 1st with a priority filing date of March 2. All senior students should apply for financial aid regardless of financial background. All students wishing to be considered for SCHOLARSHIPS, GRANTS, WORK STUDY, and/or LOANS must fill out the FAFSA. The first step to apply for the FAFSA online is for the student and one parent to obtain a PIN number. PIN numbers are o tained at www.pin.ed.gov and used to sign your FAFSA application online.

All seniors using the Common Application to apply to private or out-of-state colleges should see Mrs. Quay in the College & Career Center in the English hallway in room 121 to pick up and complete the Secondary School Packet of information to be used to complete the required supplemental forms.

To receive a CAL GRANT (State money), www.calgrant.org students need to fill out the Cal Grant GPA Information Release form available online in January. Your GPA along with information from your FAFSA will determine if you will be eligible for CAL GRANTS that can be used at UC, Cal State, California College admission testing seniors must complete their testing for private institutions and California Community Colleges. This the UC/CSU systems no later than the December test date. Some form must be submitted to Mrs. Quay by Thursday, February 28, CSU schools may not accept the December test results).

These sites calculate your tax/asset information and will give you an idea of your expected family contribution. Scholarship information:

Juniors should plan to take their SAT and/or ACT tests during the second semester. Refer to the College & Career Center website or pick up a schedule of test dates and deadlines in the College & Career Center in the English hallway in room 121. Verify the testing requirements of the colleges and universities under consideration.

Students can access free scholarship information online with the www.fastweb.com scholarship search program. A list of free websites for scholarship research is available on the College & Career Center website. Remember, students should never have to pay for scholarship information!

Juniors and Sophomores Juniors who are thinking about attending a four-year college should take the PSAT being offered at EHS on Wednesday, October 17, 2012, 8:00-11:30 am. The PSAT can not hurt a student's chance of admission and juniors who score well may qualify for National Merit Recognition and/or scholarship opportunities.

One local scholarship just for students in our district is the Frank M. and Gertrude R. Doyle Foundation, Inc. Scholarship www.frankmdoyle.org, apply online from Jan. 1 thru March 2.

Valuable information on this site regarding careers, colleges, UC System, Cal State University, Community Colleges, SAT/ACT testing, college research and career development, volunteer service, and much more.

Sophomores who are thinking about attending a four-year college should also consider taking the PSAT on October 17. Studies show that sophomores who take the PSAT, on average, will score 100 points higher on the SAT than those who do not take the test in their sophomore year. It's like a second practice for the SAT -- one practice in your sophomore year and one in your junior year. Then, you will be that much more prepared for the SAT when you take it in the spring of your junior year.

Testing Edison High School’s Standardized Testing and Reporting In May 2012, 9th, 10th, and 11th graders took the California Standards Tests in Mathematics, English/ Language Arts, Science and Social Studies. Edison High School’s Academic Performance Index (API) of 872 is outstanding. An API score of 800 is considered exemplary. Congratulations to Edison High School’s students and staff!

the California High School Exit Exam for the first time. The Exit Exam tests students’ abilities in English/Language Arts and Mathematics. Ninety-eight percent of students in the class of 2014 passed the English/Language Arts and ninety-six percent passed the Mathematics portion!

What is the STAR test?

What is the API (Academic Performance Index)?

The purpose of the Academic Performance Index (API) is to measure the year-over-year growth in academic performance for California schools. The API summarizes a school's standardized test results into a single number. Each school's STAR and CAHSEE results are calculated into a complex formula that assigns the school an API between 200 and 1000 (1000 being the best score).

What is the CAHSEE (pronounced Kay-see)?

The California High School Exit Exam (CAHSEE, pronounced KAY-see) is a test used to determine whether students have mastered key skills before graduating from high school. High school students must pass the CAHSEE in order to graduate. The CAHSEE is administered to all grade 10 students on March 12 and 13.

The test is divided into two sections: English/ Language Arts and Math. The English/Language Arts portion includes the content standards through grade 10, including vocabulary, reading, and writing strategies and conventions. In addition to answering multiple-choice questions, students write an essay on a specific topic. The Math portion covers academic content standards for grades 6, 7 and algebra I, including: statistics, data analysis and probability, number sense, measurement, algebra and functions, math reasoning and geometry.

The CAHSEE is a pass/fail test, which is not timed. A score of 350 in each area satisfies the state’s requirement to pass the CAHSEE for a high school diploma.

Each spring California students in grades 2 through 11 take a series of tests through the Standardized Testing and Reporting program, more commonly known as STAR. First administered in 1998, the STAR program requires all public schools in California to test students between mid-March and mid-June of every year. The CST (California Standards Tests) are a component of the STAR. The CST’s were developed to measure whether students are mastering the specific skills defined for each grade by the state of California.

Students with identified special learning disabilities may take a different version of California assessments known as the CAPA and CMA. These are in lieu of the STAR test.

Concussion Awareness

Bree Poor is our new health clerk. Bree was an instructional aide in our SAC Department before starting in the health office. We have also added an LVN, Marjorie Lowe in our Hygiene Center. We now have a full-time nurse and full-time LVN. Welcome Bree and Marjorie.

The Drew Brees Foundation in partnership with Dick’s Sporting Goods have teamed up to bench concussions by providing a limited amount of high schools with a one year membership for ImPACT, a computerized neurological exam that allows for athletic trainers and team physicians to establish baseline results for their athletes prior to suffering a concussion. Holli Jackson, Edison High School’s Certified Athletic Trainer, applied for the opportunity and was granted the one year membership.

ABC Supports Edison Academics Your Edison PTSA is actively involved supporting our parents, teachers, and students. We support the Arts through our National Reflections Art Program. We prepare students and parents for life after high school through parent education programs on college planning. Our Parent Partnership group provides support and education to students, parents and staff; working together to address teen issues such as bullying, cyber bullying and substance abuse. We also provide funding for graduating senior scholarships and much more.

Communicating with our members is another key focus of PTSA. As your teen navigates his or her way through high school, it is more important than ever for parents to stay involved and to know what is happening on campus. That is why we encourage you to join Edison High PTSA and get on our e-mail list.

We also invite you to attend one of remaining Association Meetings throughout the school year at 7pm in the EHS Media Center (Library) on November 5, January 14, March 11, and May 13. At these meetings you'll hear valuable information about Edison High School and how to help students make the most of their time at Edison. Our first meeting included a parent demonstration on how to use the Parent/Student Portal plus important school and community updates from principal Dr. D'Liese Melendrez. In addition, a senior ASB student will report on upcoming campus activities.

Welcome to all the students at Edison High School, and thank you so much to all the parents who have already stepped forward to kick off our Student Store this year!! The Student Store, along with Membership Dues, provides nearly all of our funds to support teacher and student academic requests, ceremonies and scholarships!!

P.E. clothes, sweats and hats are available for sale during tutorial 8:00 am to 8:27 am Tuesday through Friday and during lunch Monday through Friday at the Student Store. If your child forgets his/her school supplies, the Student Store is there for them! We also carry a limited selection of healthy snacks. EHS Foundation Welcome to the 2012-2013 school year!

First off, a big thank you to all of the EHS families who have already joined the Foundation this year. We appreciate your generous donations and are continually striving to use them in ways that benefit all students at Edison.

Thank you to those who have given to our direct donation campaign. Our goal this year is to raise enough money to replace one of our aging computer labs. Computers are an integral part of our students’ daily lives, no matter their class load. Technology-rich schools generate impressive results, including improved achievement, higher test scores, improved student attitudes, enthusiasm and engagement, richer classroom content and improved student retention and job placement rates. It will cost approximately $40,000 to replace one of our three labs. Please consider donating if you haven’t already.

DR./DENTIST/PERSONAL APPOINTMENTS-Students that need to leave campus for any reason must come to the Attendance Office in the morning with a note from a parent and wait for a check out slip. Students are to show their teacher their check out slip and then may leave at the appointed time and meet you. Please have the doctor’s office stamp the check out slip and have your student put it in the attendance note box when they return to school. Students may not be checked out over the phone. Any student leaving campus without being checked out through the Attendance Office or the Nurses Office will be marked truant. Questions? Please call our Attendance Office.

Teen Truth: Anti-bullying Assembly

Reporting Bullying Unfortunately bullying is a fact of life at schools across the nation. Here at Edison we are taking steps to reduce the impact of these actions and to help our students deal with bullies. The staff is focusing on increased awareness of the problem and is talking with the students on how to prevent bullying. On September 27th Teen Truth spoke to the entire student body to help students understand the impact of their actions and what can be done to prevent the damage bullying does. As parents encourage your child to report any act of bullying to an adult here at Edison, we will act on the report and try to end the action that is causing your child’s discomfort. If you know that your child is a victim of bullying do not be afraid to contact the supervision office to report it.

All information is kept confidential during our investigation into the matter. Also you can help by making sure your child is not the one causing the problem by talking to them about bullying. Thank you for your help keeping our students safe.

Voluntary Drug Testing

All of our students attended a thought provoking presentation with a 22 minute film drawing lessons from Columbine. Students came away with a deeper understanding of what constitutes bullying, how bullying can lead to serious consequences, and how they can intervene to stop bullying at Edison.

Bullying is a reality none of us can afford to ignore.

Each one of us at some point has been involved in some form of bullying. The challenge is to become aware and take a stand. As parents and educators we can take an active role in supporting the safety of all of our children.

If you’re not part of the solution, you’re doing nothing. It’s time to deliberately do something to defend everyone’s right to safety. If you are on the receiving end of a bully’s threats, tell somebody. Use Edison’s anonymous tip line. Hang out with a buddy. Know the safe spaces on campus.

If you are a witness to bullying behavior, comfort the victim. If safe to do so, confront the bully with a simple “Stop that.” Do not ignore. Do not condone. Do not participate. Do not encourage. Do not reward. Bystanders are not innocent.

Activities Office News HOMECOMING 2012 The Associated Student Body (ASB) is busy preparing for Homecoming 2012. The theme for Homecoming week, October 15-19, is “A Haunted Homecoming!”

The Fall Sports and Homecoming Assembly will be held Friday October 19th in the gym. During the assembly, candidates for Homecoming King and Queen will be introduced, and the King will be crowned. The underclassmen royalty will also be introduced.

That evening, the Charger football team will host the Vikings of Marina High School at 7:00 p.m. in the HBHS stadium. During half time, the Homecoming Court will be introduced and the Queen will be crowned.

On Saturday evening October 20th EHS students will enjoy a spirited evening of dancing and socializing.

The dance will be held at The Yost Theater in Santa Ana from 7:30 p.m. until 11:30 p.m. Hall Photography will be taking couple and group pictures at the dance (picture price list will be available with purchase of dance ticket).

Tickets are on sale through Thursday October 18th.

Students may purchase tickets before school, during break, during lunch and after school until 3:15 each day. Ticket sales will end at 3:15 on Thursday, October 18th.

NOTE: All students attending will be required to have a signed parent contract in the Activities Office. Contracts can be downloaded from the “News & Information” page of the school website (edisonchargers.com), or students may pick one up in the Activities Office.

The 2012 Homecoming dance ticket prices are: (per couple) $100.00 with ASB card $110.00 w/o ASB card The EHS dress code will be enforced at the dance.

People inappropriately dressed will not be admitted.

Please note: this is not a costume dance. For girls, the attire should be long or short gowns, after 6 or evening style dresses or dressy pantsuits. Boys should not wear jeans, denims or t-shirt. Homecoming is dressy – slacks, shirt, tie, sweater or vest, collar-less dress shirt with a coat.

S.O.S. (Student Orientation Squad) Edison High held its 17th annual Freshman Orientation on August 23, 2012. The Student Orientation Squad Program is designed to help freshmen adjust to high school and meet new people. Those attending participated in group activities held in the gym and other campus locations. After group activities, the freshmen were split into smaller groups facilitated by 75 upperclassmen. Within these smaller groups, students interacted with one another and toured the campus. The festivities concluded with a catered lunch.

Special thanks to Mr. Bob Strachan (Social Studies Department) and Ms. Melody Ungureanu (SAC Department) for coordinating the student leaders. Congratulations to Student Coordinators, Lindsey Thomas and her assistant, Chloe Roy who gave their time and energy in training the SOS. Thanks to the many parents and PTSA for their active support of this important activity.
