DIMITRIUS GLENN SUPER MENTOR THERE’S NOTHING WRONG WITH BEING A NERD. In fact, Dimitrius Glenn, physical trainer for the Criminal Justice Training Center, credits embracing his inner nerd as the reason he escaped the lure of street life while growing up in Pleasant Grove in the 80s and 90s.

Cousins Dhakir Bey and Dimitrius Glenn at Dallas County Juvenile Detention Center, the Youth Village.

“Where I grew up, police officers and teachers would gather us in the auditorium and let us know we would be lucky to make it to 22 years old,” he recalls. “In their eyes, we had an expiration date.” Determining the variables to escape such a fate, Dimitrius had favorable odds on his side despite growing up poor: a strong family, a pure interest in science, natural talent in athletics, and a mentor named Seth who would forever change his life. “Seth was this 6’8, strong, powerful, but peaceful man,” he shared. “He spoke properly and posed questions to us about the nature of existence, challenging us why we believed what we believed.” Life, for Dimitrius, was shared with his cousin, Dhakir Bey, who is very much like his brother. “We were kids who had vital life choices to make that would intensely affect our futures without many examples of success around us,” shared Bey. “To be real, it was easier to sell drugs than it was to go to school.” This is where Seth’s mentorship imparted positive change on the neighborhood. In an attempt to redirect the boys’ energy and focus to the possibilities of life beyond their zip code, he organized a community sports league to engage the kids beyond class time. Here, they encountered philosophical

UPGRADING // INSTRUCTOR SUCCESS STORY dialogue with Seth where they explored the power of choice and free will. “I was less vulnerable to negativity as I was more afraid of my parents’ disappointment than the peer pressure of joining a gang,” said Dimitrius. “But for other boys who met Seth, he truly changed their course in life. We still talk to him this day.” As time progressed, Dimitrius went on to become a Physical Trainer where he holds two NCSF certifications. He launched his own business, Let’s Get It Fitness Group, where he works with organizations like the YMCA, LA Fitness, 24 Hour Fitness, Tom Landry, Camp Gladiator, North Dallas High School, and Eastfield College.

who are growing up in the same zip codes as us. Our hope is that maybe we can redirect their lives just like Seth did ours.”

New ideas on how to connect the Youth Village to Eastfield College’s Criminal Justice Training Center are in the works. “It’s a very unique situation to be training both police officers and youth offenders within “Working with future police hours of one another,” said officers to train them on a Glenn. “We are scratching our physical, mental, and heads on how to bring these emotional level to serve the two worlds together to create community is a great privilege some cross-connections that for me. It’s ironic how I grew up will benefit both sides of the in fear of this group of legal spectrum.” Through people who risk their lives dialogue and exchange, every day to protect our tensions can be mediated to neighborhoods.” offset stereotypes in the comDimitrius Glenn munity regarding law enforcement and at-risk teens.

“Working with future police officers to train them on a physical, mental, and emotional level to serve the community is a great privilege for me,” shared Dimitrius. “It’s ironic how I grew up in fear of this group of people who risk their lives every day to protect our neighborhoods.”

Beyond physical training, Dimitrius and Dhakir launched their own non-profit this year called Know Yourself. Through this platform, they volunteer physical training and mentorship to the Dallas County Youth Village, the juvenile detention lock-up facility for boys ages 10-17. They have been volunteering in this role for over four years. “Before us, there were no formal physical education programs at the Youth Village for these boys,” shared Dhakir. “We come twice a week, every week, to work the boys out to ensure they are learning how to cope with their emotions and exercise their physicality in a positive way. This helps them learn to be more mindful citizens upon release so they don’t repeat their mistakes.”

“It’s important that we see each other for who we really are, not the preconceived notions of who we are,” said Dimitrius. “We help educate in order to guide others to see life through a different set of eyes.” For now, they will carry on to realize the mission they have created for themselves: to help improve mindsets to help improve lives. One workout at a time.

Lean Six Sigma is a combination of two powerful process improvement methods: Lean and Six Sigma. Both processes work together to make it easier for you and your teams to solve problems and increase the speed and effectiveness of any process within your organization. This fact-based, data-driven philosophy of improvement drives customer satisfaction and bottom-line results by reducing variation, waste, and cycle time, while promoting the use of work standardization and flow, thereby creating a competitive advantage. UPGRADING “The amazing thing about learning is we will never know it all, so embrace the unknown! Fear is completely manageable.” Cristiana Banda

CRISTIANA BANDA ADVOCATE EXTRA0RDINAIRE ON THE FIRST DAY OF CLASS, CHRISTIANA BANDA IS OFTEN MISTAKEN AS A STUDENT. Two years ago that would have been the case. An alumni of EFC’s credit and workforce programs, Ms. Banda earned an associates degree in science in 2014 and an allied health phlebotomy certificate in 2015. Today, she is a full-time phlebotomist at North Rowlett Family Practice and an adjunct instructor for the Allied Health program at Eastfield College. “I fell in love with phlebotomy because of how challenging it is,” she said.

Learning to draw blood from hands-on equipment .

“Even though the action of drawing blood is the same, each person has unique veins and unique fears or anxieties about what is happening.” For this reason, Christiana says every day is different at work, which she loves. Her story, she feels, is a tool she relies on more than she expected when teaching future phlebotomists in the classroom. “Being a former student definitely gives me some edge when it comes to my ability to relate to my students,” shares Christiana. “I can empathize with all of the juggling it requires to finish a degree or a certificate – be it home life, parenting, working while in school… I have been there.” Becoming an instructor for the Allied Health program was a dream for Ms. Banda. “My favorite part of teaching is watching students move from a place of not getting it to completely getting it. Their whole body language changes,” she shared. “The amazing thing about learning is we will never know it all, so embrace the unknown! Fear is completely manageable.”

PARTNERSHIP Owner Richard Womack and head brewmaster William Boller Railport Brewing store items.

RAILPORT BREWING CO. HOP ON THE TRAIN A LIFELONG DREAM THREE YEARS IN THE MAKING, husband and wife team Richard and Shannan Womack are weeks away from opening up the first micro-brewery in Ellis County, Railport Brewing Company. To prepare, Richard tells the story of hearing about EFC’s Brewery Program on the local news. “I knew I had to attend. It felt like destiny when I heard about it,” he said. After enrolling, Richard met a classmate he clicked with named William Boller. After experimenting with recipes, Womack felt he found an artist and quickly asked William to become Railport’s head brewmaster. “People told us when we

started it would be a roller coaster ride. But no matter what the obstacle is or will be, our dedication to great craft beer is a constant.” Richard Womack

Their tagline, Hop on the Train, is a clever play on beer’s sacred ingredient as well as a shout out to the brewery’s historic location in downtown Waxahachie. “Ellis County has a rich railroad history,” shared Richard. “Hearing stories from locals, internet searches, newspapers and magazines, and working with the Ellis County Museum has been educational and made the journey rewarding.”

Set to open in early 2018, Railport’s brand has been quick to catch on before even opening its doors. Finding ways to “pop up” in the community, they have collaborated with the Midlothian Wine and Arts Festival, Gingerbread Antiques for Ladies Night Out, the Forth Worth Beer Mile, and the Dinah Weable Breast Cancer Survivors Fund. But perhaps the most fun they have had was hosting a “Craft Beer Naming Contest” with the members of the community. The winner was the very witty name of “Waxahappy.” “People told us when we started it would be a roller coaster ride,” said Richard. “But no matter what the obstacle is or will be, our dedication to great craft beer is a constant.” WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT & COMMUNITY EDUCATION I EASTFIELD COLLEGE

This program is geared towards training the student to become a skilled craftsman in the brewery industry. It is focused on the production side and students will be exposed and immersed into all aspects related to brewing practices, including but not limited to: mash in, wort knock out, fermentation, hop dosing, filtration and packaging. Three days a week are in-class, on our campus at Eastfield, and the other two days students are actually working at local brewery partners. This is a full time program completed in 6 weeks. The other option is to take the program online so the classroom component is replaced with daily modules that can be completed from anywhere. There is still the same internship component but rather than being in a set brewery rotation, you would be able to find your own internship and set your schedule with the brewery as long as it’s approved by the instructor. Local students have the option of joining existing brewery partners, schedule permitting.

This is an advanced educational program in Brewing Technology and Brewing Operations Management. It is tailored to the needs of Leadership in the Brewing Industry and provides the necessary theoretical and practical background for Head Brewers and Brewmasters to successfully manage and Lead Brewing Operations. The Technical Brewer Certificate Program consists of 2 classes: Applied Brewing Science Class is an advanced brewing course that will provide the students with a deeper understanding of the technical, technological and quality aspects of the brewing process. It will cover the entire brewing process from raw materials and brew house technology to fermentation-technology as well as the filtration and packaging process. Advanced Brewing Practices Class will teach detailed knowledge and the skills necessary to effectively lead and manage the daily operations of a production brewery emphasizing the practical operational side of brewing management and leadership tasks. It will cover efficiency calculation in production, and understanding and monitoring of key process indicators as well as process optimizations and Project Management.

As a Teacher Assistant you’ll be providing support for classroom teachers in K-12 or preschool education. This support includes instruction (the actual teaching), paperwork (like grading) and sometimes lesson planning. Teacher’s Assistants typically have certain qualities that will make them effective in their jobs. These include flexibility while they assist the teacher in their duties. Dependability because the teachers will rely on them time and time again. Communication as they interact with the teacher and students throughout the day. Finally, a love for learning and children because they must value education, and enjoy helping and working with kids. UPGRADING “I believe in creating joy in the classroom. This is easy to do when you have interesting people from different corners of the world all together in one room.” Nora Sullivan

NORA SULLIVAN ESL POWERHOUSE EDUCATOR ON THE LAST DAY OF NORA SULLIVAN’S ESL COURSES, loud bursts of laughter fill up the hallways. Rich, aromatic scents arise from the homemade dishes her students bring from their native countries. The loud (and sometimes live!) mariachi music brings students to their feet to dance. “I believe in creating joy in the classroom,” shares Sullivan. “This is easy to do when you have interesting people from different corners of the world all together in one room.” With students from Mexico, Afghanistan, Cambodia, and everywhere in-between, this is truly a global classroom. “Like my students, I am not from the U.S. and I had to learn English when I moved from southern China as a teenager,” Nora said. Rooted in her passion for people, Ms. Sullivan’s teaching style is warm and personable. “I love to explain what we are learning in many different ways,” she shared. “All of my students have a common goal -- to understand the English language and to connect to American culture,” Nora said. “It is my job to make this happen in a fun way!” As students overcome the boundaries of language, they simultaneously create more work opportunities for themselves, enhance self-esteem, build community and parental involvement with their children’s schools, and find inspiration to seek citizenship. “Taking an ESL class is the first step to making the most out of coming to this country,” Nora shared. “At first it is difficult, but we are all in this together.” “Don’t give up!” says Nora. “Just keep learning…that’s the secret.” WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT & COMMUNITY EDUCATION I EASTFIELD COLLEGE

PARTNERSHIPS

Sonia Headley working with El Rio employees.

EL RIO GRANDE EL RIO GRANDE LATIN MARKET HAS ITS VERY OWN NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTION FOR 2018 – to have a workforce that is 20% bilingual. To realize this goal, they are offering quite the employee perk: enrollment in a free English as a Second Language (ESL) course while working on-the-clock. Launched last September, DCCCD and Eastfield College began providing classes for more than seven El Rio Grande Latin Markets serving 105 employees, approximately 10% of the growing chain’s current workforce. “Every day we find a creative way to teach,” shared EFC ESL instructor Sonia Headley. “We take students [El Rio Grande’s employees] through the store and have them practice English through interacting with real-life customers who are shopping for groceries.” The training becomes two-fold—the students learn the English language while also bolstering interpersonal skills that guarantee excellent customer service. Classroom activities include recommending products, identifying locations of goods, and, most importantly, interviewing patrons about their experience at the store.

“This partnership personifies what we are all about – providing meaningful opportunities on a local level that generate a highly-skilled, highly-educated workforce.” Sheridan Nixon

The partnership won’t stop here. DCCCD and El Rio Grande are continuing to train new groups of non-native English speaking employees as well as provide leadership training at the corporate facility for store managers. DCCCD AEL Project Leader Sheridan Nixon stated, “This partnership personifies what we are all about – providing meaningful opportunities on a local level that generate a highly-skilled, highly-educated workforce.”
