UPGRADING ALLIED HEALTH: ON THE FAST TRACK FROM GED TO A HEALTH CARE CAREER

ALMA GUTIERREZ IS AN EDUCATION ADVOCATE. She has always urged family and friends who dropped out of high school or college to go back, and she has encouraged her sons to pursue higher education. But she never reflected on her own education until someone asked her a question she had never asked herself. “Someone challenged me, ‘Why don’t you go back to school?’” she said. “I never gave up on trying to go back to school. I just started a family, a very large family, so I was concentrated on them.” Alma dropped out of high school to get married. She has five sons, ages 6 to 18, and a newborn grandson. “You tell your kids education is important, but then they have parents who didn’t graduate, so they think, ‘If it’s that important, why didn’t you guys do it?’ ” Alma’s husband, Trenidad, earned his GED and then trained as an automotive technician a few years ago. “So then I thought, ‘It’s my turn,’ ” Alma said. Alma enrolled in Eastfield’s free GED preparation program and earned her high school equivalency. 4

Then she completed certification programs as a Patient Care Technician, Certified Nurse Aid, Phlebotomy Technician, and EKG Technician. “I’ve always wanted to be a nurse, since high school,” Alma said. “I’ve been taking care of people since I was 12. My mom became a single mother, and I helped taking care of my siblings. Then I was very young when I had my kids and took care of them on my own with my husband. “I actually really enjoy it. I’m comfortable making other people comfortable.”

Lean Six Sigma is a combination of two powerful process improvement methods: Lean and Six Sigma. Both processes work together to make it easier for you and your teams to solve problems and increase the speed and effectiveness of any process within your organization. This fact-based, data-driven philosophy of improvement drives customer satisfaction and bottom-line results by reducing variation, waste, and cycle time, while promoting the use of work standardization and flow, thereby creating a competitive advantage. It applies anywhere variation and waste exist, from manufacturing to government. This certificate program will provide the basic understanding of these processes whether your goal is to bolster your resume or obtain your White, Yellow, or Green Belt certification.

This program is geared towards training the student to become a skilled craftsman in the brewery industry. It is focused on the production side and students will be exposed and immersed into all aspects related to brewing practices, including but not limited to: mash in, wort knock out, fermentation, hop dosing, filtration and packaging. Three days a week are in-class, on our campus at Eastfield, and the other two days students are actually working at local brewery partners. This is a full time program completed in 6 weeks. The other option is to take the program online so the classroom component is replaced with daily modules that can be completed from anywhere. There is still the same internship component but rather than being in a set brewery rotation, you would be able to find your own internship and set your schedule with the brewery as long as it’s approved by the instructor. As a Teacher Assistant you’ll be providing support for classroom teachers in K-12 or preschool education. This support includes instruction (the actual teaching), paperwork (like grading) and sometimes lesson planning. Teacher’s Assistants typically have certain qualities that will make them effective in their jobs. These include flexibility while they assist the teacher in their duties. Dependability because the teachers will rely on them time and time again. Communication as they interact with the teacher and students throughout the day. Finally, a love for learning and children because they must value education, and enjoy helping and working with kids. Rene Martinez, Instructor I have a passion for training and preparing students to get into the pathway of public education. As an instructor, the most rewarding part of this program is when I help students land a job. I am even prouder when graduates decide to continue their education to go from Teaching Assistant to leading a classroom.
