SONIA HEADLEY THE AMERICAN DREAM CAN MANIFEST IN VARIOUS FORMS DEPENDING ON THE DREAMER. For Sonia Headley, hers is a vision rooted in the power of choice. “My American dream was to create what I wanted while also having the ability to change my mind along the way.” At the age of 31, it’s safe to say Mrs. Headley has created precisely the life she dreamt of due to her tenacity, persistence, and grit. From Top Sonia & her husband Chase at their small business 1001 Wines & Spirits Sonia teaching a GED/Spanish class

Born in Tegucigalpa, Honduras, Sonia and her family moved to the United States when she was 12. While she spoke some English, Sonia was the perpetual “new kid” as she attended 3 different high schools in 4 years across 3 different states. Lonely, her outlet became learning. “Embracing change helped me understand that new challenges are merely a part of life.” This crystallized within Sonia the belief that if she wanted something in life, she had to create it herself. Create it, she did. At 19, Sonia packed up and moved to Dallas with her then boyfriend, and now husband, Chase Headley. Together, they struggled to build a life, each working multiple jobs to cover their basic needs. “I remember that first year, we made about $10k collectively,” said Chase. “We lived day-by-day; we truly had to fight for each other and the life we wanted to build.”

Rooting for her growth, he stepped through teaching English, life skills, and GED up to support her goals. “You name it, I did it – laundry, courses in Spanish. cooking, cleaning, extra shifts at work. We’re a team.” “I’m honestly just so proud of her,” said Chase. Achieving her goal, Sonia attended Eastfield College and earned her Associate’s degree in 2013. She continued on to graduate Cum Laude from the University of Texas at Arlington with her Bachelor’s degree in Linguistics. Simultaneously, Chase’s dreams also began to expand. While taking concurrent classes at Eastfield College, he stumbled upon an opportunity to own his own business. 1001 Wine and Spirits, located in downtown Dallas, was up for sale. “I’m more of a self-made learner. I took classes to fill in my skills gaps, and then I directly applied them to my business.” Buying a business was a risk, one that required the couple to rely on teamwork – their guiding family value.

“We have known each other since high school and she’s doing exactly what she set out to do.” For Sonia, “We all get to choose the life we want to live and what to focus on. With an education under my belt, the choices I get to make have become more adventurous and challenging – this is how Chase and I like to live our lives.” The power of choice is where true empowerment is born.

Revered Flowers hopes this educational partnership takes BI’s mission deeper down and further out. “My mantra lately is this -- how can we continue to do what we’re doing so that we have a more profound impact while also expanding our reach?” Changing a person’s life is a step-by-step process that requires the help of the entire community. “The more they encounter EFC’s services, the more empowered they become. PARTNERSHIP Masonite HR Manager Ted Beaver Workers at the warehouse

MASONITE FOR THE PAST 15 YEARS, MASONITE HAS THRIVED ON HELPING its over 300 employees at Greenville walk through walls. “Investing in our team’s professional development is part of our promise. When our employees succeed, we succeed,” says HR Manager Ted Beaver. Under Beaver’s leadership, Masonite has taken this promise to a new level, thanks to a partnership with Eastfield. The Greenville, Texas location is the first Masonite site in the country to offer company-funded ESL courses to its employees, 60% of whom are Hispanic and Spanish-speaking. “Masonite has never done this before, and it’s our hope that by providing language acquisition courses we will create “Providing ESL and GED a work culture that leaves people feeling how valued they are.”

courses is the first step to creating our next generation of leaders.” Ted Beaver

After signs posted around the company announcing the on-site ESL courses, a buzz picked up around the plant. People expressed an employer had never offered anything like this before. “Building confidence is the greatest gift you can offer an employee. It’s important that our team believes in themselves as this helps to drive positive self-esteem and builds more competitive career paths to generate upward mobility for our people and community.”

Set to expand this fall with GED courses in English and Spanish, Masonite is investing in its frontline employees, hoping they will grow into future supervisors. “Providing ESL and GED courses is the first step to creating our next generation of leaders,” shares Ted. “Human Resources is their advocate. This is one of many things we are doing to help our employees lead meaningful lives.” Masonite’s vision is to be the best provider of building products in the eyes of customers, employees, shareholders, suppliers, and communities. “We can only be the best provider if we encourage our employees to be their best selves,” says Beaver. “This is why allowing the employees to upgrade their skills through Eastfield College is so important to us.” W O R K F O R C E D E V E L O P M E N T & C O M M U N I T Y E D U C AT I O N I EASTFIELD COLLEGE

UPGRADING The Avelino Family: Norma, Moises Jr. and Moises; Officers Avelino

KEEPING THE PEACE FOR MOISES AND NORMA AVELINO, PROTECTING THE COMMUNITY IS A FAMILY AFFAIR. Both alumni of the Eastfield College Criminal Justice Training Center, the Avelinos prove it only takes one person to change the course of a family’s destiny. “I dropped out of high school and earned my GED,” shared Moises. “I thought going to work full-time instead of earning my education was the best thing for my family.”

“The Criminal Justice Training Center has completely changed our lives – and it’s beyond just academic success. We have accomplished physical success, financial success, and life success.” Officer Norma Avelino

In 2012 he made the decision to evolve from a security guard to a police officer. Upon him graduating, his family beamed. “They view me as a mature man who gives back.” His experience at Eastfield allowed him to forge lifelong friendships through the brotherhood and sisterhood of being a police officer. Ironically, this is what inspired his wife, Norma, to pursue her own dreams of law enforcement. “I remember the night I decided to join. The shooting at El Centro was happening,” Norma shared. “My husband was pacing as we heard helicopters flying over downtown.” This moment was her call to action.

A first generation American, high school graduate, and college student, Norma was no stranger to being “the first” at things in life. One role that surprised her was being the first female class leader in the academy’s history. “Being a minority woman in law enforcement can be scary. I’m 5’2, short in stature, and criminals underestimate me.” She is adamant that despite her new role in the world of work, being a mom comes first. “I know every day there is a possibility of death for either me or Moises. I had to weigh that risk before I took the oath for training.”The risk is one she is proud to take every day, and she has Eastfield College to thank for it. “The Criminal Justice Training Center has completely changed our lives – and it’s beyond just academic success. We have accomplished physical success, financial success, and life success.”

This program is geared towards training the student to become a skilled craftsman in the brewery industry. It is focused on the production side and students will be exposed and immersed into all aspects related to brewing practices, including but not limited to: mash in, wort knock out, fermentation, hop dosing, filtration and packaging. Three days a week are in-class, on our campus at Eastfield, and the other two days students are actually working at local brewery partners. This is a full time program completed in 6 weeks. The other option is to take the program online so the classroom component is replaced with daily modules that can be completed from anywhere. There is still the same internship component but rather than being in a set brewery rotation, you would be able to find your own internship and set your schedule with the brewery as long as it’s approved by the instructor. Local students have the option of joining existing brewery partners, schedule permitting.

This is an advanced educational program in Brewing Technology and Brewing Operations Management. It is tailored to the needs of Leadership in the Brewing Industry and provides the necessary theoretical and practical background for Head Brewers and Brewmasters to successfully manage and Lead Brewing Operations. The Technical Brewer Certificate Program consists of 2 classes: Applied Brewing Science Class is an advanced brewing course that will provide the students with a deeper understanding of the technical, technological and quality aspects of the brewing process. It will cover the entire brewing process from raw materials and brew house technology to fermentation-technology as well as the filtration and packaging process. Advanced Brewing Practices Class will teach detailed knowledge and the skills necessary to effectively lead and manage the daily operations of a production brewery emphasizing the practical operational side of brewing management and leadership tasks. It will cover efficiency calculation in production, and understanding and monitoring of key process indicators as well as process optimizations and Project Management.

YOU DOWN WITH OHB?

Oak Highlands Brewery has connected with the community through savvy branding, quality brews, and a casual atmosphere. Thanks to an altruistic, family-friendly business model that truly toasts local culture, a partnership with Eastfield College quickly manifested. This collaboration initially had OHB hosting interns from the EFC Journeyman Brewer Program. True to OHB’s philanthropic form, the partnership found new ways to unfold.

From Top: EFC Brewing Program Graduates celebrate at the OHB hosted ceremony Graduate Certificates and Growlers Eastfield Graduate and OHB employee Kyle Larson

“I shook hands with co-founder Brad Mall at the Dallas Observer Brewfest and within ten minutes he offered to sponsor our next brewery graduation.” shared Judith Dumont. “This changed the nature of our graduations as family and friends could experience this new career their loved one is pursuing.” One lucky EFC alumni, Kyle Larson, was hired after earning his Journeyman Brewer certificate in fall 2016. OHB didn’t stop there. “They even organized a fundraiser where $900 was raised to support our youth summer camp,” shares Dumont. “This is the perfect kind of partnership – we both love to work hard, have a lot of fun, but also create something meaningful along the way.” With such a compassionate, zany, and good-ole-fashion beer-making spirit, we can’t think of a better partner to toast for their unwavering support.
