PLAN AHEAD

01

Where to start

English pathway programs - Pathway programs are designed to help international students prepare for their undergraduate or graduate degree. Entry requirements for the pathway programs are lower than that of the academic programs and provide a good opportunity for students to brush up on their English communication skills and give them ample time to adjust to the higher education environment in the U.S. Bachelor’s degree - An undergraduate degree, commonly called a bachelor’s or college degree in the U.S., is typically studied over four years and is comprised of around 120 semester credit hours. Typically, a college curriculum starts with general core courses which include English, social sciences, humanities and mathematics. You will then take up courses in a more specific field called a major, which is usually the area where you want to build a career on or a graduate degree from.

Graduate degree - If you have already completed an undergraduate degree, then this is the option for you. A graduate degree provides the opportunity to develop your academic or professional skills further and is a means to advance your career. Students in the U.S. typically study their graduate degree over a two or three year period after their undergraduate degree. Some graduate degree programs offer internship opportunities to further enhance your skills and knowledge in a more practical setting.

02

<RXU ÀQDQFHV

While some U.S. universities offer scholarships for international students, you still need to make sure that you have adequate funds to support your studies. As part of the visa approval process, the U.S. government requires that international students have access to funds before their visa is granted.

03

The application process

04

Your visa

EduCo staff located in 17 countries worldwide can help you with securing entry into your institution of choice, and that you receive advice on where to get information in getting a student visa. Standardized English tests are generally part of the application process. Taking these tests in advance ensures that you have the results available when you submit your application.

Once you are accepted by a Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP) certified university, you can then work on securing your student visa. Information is available online on how to prepare for your visa appointment. Alternatively, you can engage the services of a qualified consultant to help you with this process.

05

Pack your bags!

This is the most exciting stage, but before packing your bags, make sure you have done enough reading on life in the U.S., how the immigration system works, and training and work opportunities. EduCo staff are available in the U.S. to assist you and to ensure that your new student life is as fun and memorable as it should be.

“The one reason why I chose this school over all the others, was the fact that when I came here I felt much more welcome than in all the other schools. I spoke to the dean and had a 25-minute candid converstaion with him and he had no idea who I was or anything like that and we had a very good conversation, to me that’s what sold me, Here the students are number one, and that is what I love the most.”

I’ve learned so much from professors, from alking to them, when class is over we are just hanging out with them in general, if you get to know the professors they are very helpful, these professors are really good at what they do.”

“NJIT is a place for innovators and problem solvers, people who embrace questioning inquiries, new ideas, and serious discourse marked by both rigorous analysis and respectful debate” Joel S. Blook, NJIT President.

Meet NJIT student, Maggie Maggie Wang joined the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Villanova University after graduating from NJIT in 2006 and is now an associate professor. There she teaches primarily computer engineering courses — computer architecture, logic and design, embedded systems and field-programmable gate-array devices — to undergraduate, M.S. and Ph.D. students. Maggie came to NJIT from Beijing and received a full assistantship with her advisor, Dr. Sotirios Ziavras, who was working on a grant from the Department of Energy to explore FPGA-based high-performance parallel computing architectures for real-time power grid applications. Maggie says all her NJIT professors were very approachable and supportive and that several were involved in research, so she was able to learn about her field from many different aspects. Meet UMBC student Suhas

Suhas Gopalappa University of Maryland, Baltimore County

To me, the key to achieving my goals is to receive my master’s degree. I decided to pursue this at a place that would challenge me and my abilities in every possible way: the United States. When I started researching universities, I was not aware of the higher education system in America.

The only universities I knew were those in the Ivy League; I soon discovered that the system was much larger than this! With the help of my friends, I got to know about the various university systems and after much research, I had UMBC at the top of my list of colleges I wanted to get into. Fortunately, at this stage I was introduced to Geetha, who worked for EduCo. It was through her I got to meet Ms. Jill Barr, the Assistant Dean of UMBC, while she was in India. The meeting with Jill cemented my choice of UMBC as my graduate school. I applied to UMBC for the fall 2016 semester and had my admission confirmed. I got my I-20 and completed my application for my F-1 visa. I thought everything was set. But fate had something else planned for me; I was rejected in my visa interview. Twice.

It was a tough time. I almost lost hope of pursuing my higher education abroad but Geetha was always there to help me when I needed. She helped me defer my admission to the spring semester. She prepared me more for the visa interview by setting up several mock interviews. With Geetha’s help, I was finally able to get my visa. I arrived in the U.S. in time for orientation. To my surprise, I found Jill there. And to my even bigger surprise, I was welcomed with a big, warm hug from Jill. She remembered me, by name, even after four months had passed since our brief meeting in India. To someone who had come thousands of miles away from home, away from family and friends, that hug meant a lot. It felt like being welcomed to a second home. It was at that moment I knew I had made the right choice of selecting UMBC.

The UMBC Chess Team has been the National Collegiate Team Chess Champions six times since 2003!

First of all, I love the environment and people at St. Thomas. Secondly, St. Thomas got one of the best Career Development Centers. And lastly it was because of the scholarship that I was offered. Nahn Thai Nguyen Vietnam Meet Nhan, an Information Systems and Business Administration major from Thai Nguyen, Vietnam. Nhan answered some questions for us

What do you like most about St. Thomas? What I like most about St. Thomas is the class size. We only have about 30 students max in a class. That gives each and every student more

than enough time to interact and communicate with their professors as well as classmates. It has been helping me a lot with my study. What is some advice you would give to students applying to St. Thomas? I only have 1 advice for prospect students: open up. They will surely enjoy their time here. What is one thing that surprised you about St. Thomas? When I started at St. Thomas, the thing that surprised me the most was the people.
