PLAN AHEAD

01

Where to start

English pathway programs - Pathway programs are designed to help international students prepare for their undergraduate or graduate degree. Entry requirements for the pathway programs are lower than that of the academic programs and provide a good opportunity for students to brush up on their English communication skills and give them ample time to adjust to the higher education environment in the country of their choice. Bachelor’s degree - An undergraduate degree, commonly called a bachelor’s degree, is typically studied over three to four years. An undergraduate curriculum starts with general core courses which include English, social sciences, humanities and mathematics. You will then take up courses in a more specific field called a major, which is usually the area where you want to build a career on or a graduate degree from.

Graduate degree - If you have already completed an undergraduate degree, then this is the option for you. A graduate degree provides the opportunity to develop your academic or professional skills further and is a means to advance your career. Students typically study the graduate program over a two or three-year period after their undergraduate degree. Some graduate programs offer internship opportunities to further develop your skills and knowledge in a more practical setting.

02

<RXU ÀQDQFHV

While some college and universities offer scholarships for international students, you still need to make sure that you have adequate funds to support your studies. As part of the visa approval process, the immigration department requires that international students have access to funds before their visa is granted.

03

The application process

04

Your visa

EduCo staff located in 17 countries worldwide can help you with securing entry into your institution of choice and ensure that you receive advice on where to get information in getting a student visa. Standardised English tests are generally part of the application process. Taking these tests in advance ensures that you have the results available when you submit your application.

Once you are accepted by a university, you can then work on securing your student visa. Information is available online on how to prepare for your visa appointment. Alternatively, you can engage the services of a qualified consultant to help you with this process.

05

Pack your bags!

This is the most exciting stage, but before packing your bags, make sure you have done enough reading on life in your study destination, what you can and cannot do on a student visa, and training and work opportunities available for you. EduCo staff are available in Australia, Canada, Ireland and the United States to assist you and to ensure that your experience as an international student is fun, memorable and invaluable.

STUDY

in the UNITED

STATES

Destination America The U.S. is full of distinct and iconic sights, and amazing, bustling cities bursting with life. Our institutions are located in or near major cities, allowing you to see the sights in your study destination as well as easily travel around the country.

Cultural experience Immerse yourself in America’s diverse culture. Often described as a melting pot, the U.S. has a thriving population of 320 million people coming together to integrate and bring forth a unique multicultural society.

Academic excellence The U.S. has the most number of highly ranked universities in the world, so it’s no wonder that it is the top student destination globally.

Career opportunities U.S. universities have industry linkages which provide students the global opportunity to grow and succeed in their careers. This makes a U.S. education an investment worth every dollar spent!

Technological innovation U.S. universities are at the forefront of research and technology. International students who become equipped with these highly sought after skills will continue to attract opportunities in the U.S. and the global market after graduating.

EduCo support EduCo is unique in the level of support it can provide you. Not only will you be supported through your application process, but you will be supported by our team throughout your time in the U.S..

Costs involved in studying in the United States When applying for a student visa, you will need to show that you can meet the financial requirements to cover your first 12 months’ expenses in the United States, including the total estimated cost of tuition, living expenses and other incidentals. On top of this, you are also expected to let the American government know how you plan to cover your expenses for the duration of your program. Proof of financial capacity may be required which can be in the form of personal funds, assets or a combination of both. Tuition fees vary between institutions and programs. Food and living costs can range from US$8,000 to US$12,000 per year depending on location and personal preferences. You also need to allocate money for your school supplies and books, as well as other miscellaneous expenses.

The best thing about studying in the United States JULIA TRACEWSKI U.S. Marketing Director Tell us about your role:

How can students make the most of studying overseas?

I am the Marketing Director for EduCo’s U.S. partners. I love my role because I get to learn about each of our partners and work with our on-campus coordinators to promote program offerings and track the success of active EduCo students. By communicating with our partners, I gain insights on what’s happening on campus, learn about new academic programs, and witness student experiences as well as opportunities once they graduate. I’m able to then share this information with our agent partners and address their needs when promoting our U.S. partners.

Get involved and do what may feel a bit uncomfortable! Our campuses have multiple support services to ensure that international students integrate and get involved as early as possible. Much of a students’ learning is done outside of the classroom so students should take advantage of activities, clubs, events and volunteering opportunities within each school. In addition, students should get involved in activities that would add value to their resume like internships that would build connections with potential future employers.

Why do you recommend the U.S. as a study destination?

When in the U.S., what are the top three things students should try/eat/do?

By studying in the U.S. students have the opportunity to interact with a diverse student body and therefore gain a “global degree”. Students come from all around the world bringing in with them multiple cultures that provide a well-rounded and diverse student experience. Our U.S. partners are committed to ensuring that their international students feel welcome, safe and part of the campus community. Finally, by studying in the U.S. students will have the opportunity to participate in internships that will allow them access to real-world experiences and the chance to make industry connections before they graduate.

One, visit our nation’s capital, Washington DC. Two, get involved in at least one student organisation on campus. And three, try American food. The American hamburger, does live up to the hype; it’s a must-have. If you are vegetarian, try our national dessert—a slice of apple pie!

Duquesne University was established in 1878 primarily as a school for the children of Pittsburgh’s poor immigrants. Duquesne today is an educational and economic powerhouse comprising nine schools of study that serves nearly 10,000 students and is ranked among the best schools in the U.S. For the 10th consecutive year, Duquesne University is ranked among the U.S. News and World Report’s top-tier schools, rising four more spots to No. 120 in the newly released 2018 edition of the Best Colleges rankings. Attributing to student success in the university is the student-to-faculty ratio. You’ll benefit from a 14:1 student-to-faculty ratio and an academic experience hallmarked by personal attention from an award-winning faculty. In fact, almost half of all classes have 20 or fewer students, which means you’ll have plenty of opportunities for direct interaction with your professors. In addition, the University has set its values and mission in giving a balanced student-life inside and even outside the campus by providing students worthwhile activities and access to facilities for their wellbeing. With its various student organisations, groups, and services dedicated to making the student-life a success not only socially but academically as well, the university has consistently stayed on top of undergraduate, master’s and doctorate programs in the U.S.

Park-like campus in the heart of Pittsburgh.

“The one reason why I chose this school over all the others was the fact that when I came here, I felt much more welcome than in all the other schools. I had a candid 25-minute conversation with the dean. He had no idea who I was or anything like that, but it didn’t matter. We had a very sincere dialogue and that’s what sold me. Here the students are number one and that is what I love the most. “When the time comes for us to go on our rotations or internships, we are definitely ready. I wouldn’t trade the experience I’ve had here for anything.”

Anthony Elia, Sewell, N.J. Class of 2016 Doctor of Pharmacy Program

“When I visited Duquesne as a high school student, I enjoyed the campus and the people. Now, four years later, I’m certain that I made the right decision. “I thoroughly enjoy going to class. I’ve learned so much from professors by simply spending time with them. My friends and I would hang out with them after class. In general, the professors are very helpful and are really good at what they do.”

“NJIT is a place for innovators and problem solvers, people who embrace questioning inquiries, new ideas, and serious discourse marked by both rigorous analysis and respectful debate” Joel S. Blook, NJIT President.

Meet NJIT alumna, Maggie Maggie Wang joined the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Villanova University after graduating from NJIT in 2006 and is now an associate professor. There she teaches primarily computer engineering courses — computer architecture, logic and design, embedded systems and field-programmable gate-array devices — to undergraduate, M.S. and Ph.D. students. Maggie came to NJIT from Beijing and received a full assistantship with her advisor, Dr. Sotirios Ziavras, who was working on a grant from the Department of Energy to explore FPGA-based high-performance parallel computing architectures for real-time power grid applications. Maggie says all her NJIT professors were very approachable and supportive and that several were involved in research, so she was able to learn about her field from many different aspects. I got to know about the various university systems and after much research, I had UMBC at the top of my list of colleges I wanted to get into. I was introduced to Geetha, who worked for EduCo. It was through her I got to meet Ms. Jill Barr, the Assistant Dean of UMBC, while she was in India. The meeting with Jill cemented my choice, UMBC as my graduate school.

Geetha was always there to help me. She helped me defer my admission to the spring semester. She prepared me more for the visa interview by setting up several mock interviews. With Geetha’s help, I was able to get my visa. I arrived in the U.S. in time for orientation. Jill was there to welcome me with a big hug. She remembered me by name, even after four months had passed since our brief meeting in India. It felt like being welcomed to a second home. It was at that moment I knew I had made the right choice in selecting UMBC.

The UMBC Chess Team has been the National Collegiate Team Chess Champions six times since 2003!

Some programs of study allow you to undertake internship or co-op work experience, providing you the perfect opportunity to gain skills and local industry experience, which can give you an advantage when starting your career.

Canada is one of the most scenic countries in the world, known for its diverse and varying landscape. The south of the country features a blend of rural countryside and urban cityscapes, while the north is known for its evergreen forests and snowy viewpoints.

Quality of living and safety Education based on excellence Education is highly valued in Canada. According to the 2017 U.S. News and World Report, Canada is ranked Δ8 in the most educated country category with 51% of adults having received some form of post-secondary education. The country has high academic standards that are rigorously controlled, and the certificates and degrees offered are recognised worldwide.

Canada is the second best country in the world according to the 2018 U.S. News and World Report. Canada ranked Δ1 for quality of life and is in the top 10 for entrepreneurship, citizenship, and transparent government practices. Canada also ranks high for green living and has also been voted as the second best country to headquarter a corporation.

Multiculturalism With an emphasis placed on equality and inclusiveness for all people, Canada prides itself on its multiculturalism. Multiculturalism is a part of Canada’s national identity. One in five Canadians were born outside of the country.

Costs involved in studying in Canada When applying for a student visa, you will need to show you can meet the financial requirements to cover your first 12 months in Canada, including the total estimated cost of tuition, living expenses, and other incidentals. Compared to many countries, studying in Canada as an international student is a more affordable option. You will likely need between C$20,000 - C$30,000 per year to cover your tuition and living expenses. Tuition fees will vary between institutions and programs, while food and living costs will vary depending on your location and personal preferences. You will also need to allocate money for your school supplies and any miscellaneous expenses. It’s important to note that BC health insurance is required to study in Canada if your program is longer than six months. Health care will be arranged through the institution.

Why you should study in Canada NEIL MORT Vice President, Enrolment & Student Services/Registrar Acsenda School of Management Tell us a little about your position:

How can students make the most of studying overseas?

I am the Vice President of Enrolment and Student Services and Registrar for Acsenda School of Management. I have an incredible position that gives me an opportunity to work closely with students, faculty, and staff in the development of the campus community, student success and leadership programs, and to facilitate domestic and international transfer credit processes. I also work closely with other institutions and government agencies in helping to represent Acsenda.

To make the most of your studies, focus and participate in school activities and contribute to discussions in the class. The more effort you put in, the more you will gain from your education in Canada.

Why do you recommend Canada as a study destination? Canada, in particular, Vancouver is one of the best places in the world to live and study in. Vancouver is surrounded by coastal mountains known for its natural beauty. It is a safe city, and very welcoming to people from different countries and cultures. Also known for its excellent education system, studying in Vancouver is truly an international experience where you will have the opportunity to meet and study with students from all over the world.

Get involved in both student life and in the community. Remember we are here to help you, and you are not alone, so come and talk to us. Our staff and faculty are always ready to address your concerns and be of some assistance.

When in Canada, what are the top three things students must try/eat/do? Take time to get out and enjoy the outdoors especially the view at night from the Grouse Mountain where you could even try night skiing. The Lynn Canyon Suspension Bridge and the forest below are sites to see. Great places have great food choices, Denman Street is full of worldclass restaurants and one lovely sunset by the English Bay. Grab one of these Canadian staples - maple syrup, B.C. sockeye salmon and Poutine for a true Canadian gourmet experience. A game of Hockey is one exciting experience one should never miss when in Canada.

Meet Acsenda graduate, Liliya Studying at Acsenda School of Management brought much added value to my personal development and career prospects. The small class size allowed the use of better learning methods, and personal interaction between professors and students. Perhaps the most valuable part of my experience at Acsenda was being taught by academically qualified and experienced professionals in the different fields of study. These professors link theory and practice by illustrating with real life examples and lessons gleaned from their own professional experience. Acsenda provided the technical knowledge base and intellectual platform for me to complete my BBA degree in 2014. The same facilitated me to attain my professional accounting designation – CPA. Located just three minutes from Vancouver’s scenic waterfront.

Meet Arbutus College graduate, Zusana I started my one-year course last year in February. I decided to study Business Management as I already studied business in my home country. I enjoyed the time I spent here, the year went very quick! Classes were very informative and I learned a lot of new interesting and useful information. I took different classes every month from accounting to hospitality. There are many students at Arbutus College, from around the world, all studying different courses; it was interesting to learn traditions from different cultures and meeting new people whom I made friends with. Unfortunately, some people go back to their countries and it is always sad to say goodbye to your friends but thanks to the modern age we can always stay in touch.

Zusana Pavlikova Co-op Diploma in Business Management

I have to say big thank you to Arbutus’s staff. The teachers were amazing; they were nice, funny and made the classes very interesting. If I had any problems, they would help me a lot. I can’t even express how much I appreciated it. I am happy I chose Arbutus College and I will really miss my days there.

STUDY in AUSTRALIA Small but mighty

Cities

Despite its large land size, Australia has a small population of only 24 million people - but this doesn’t mean that the country and its population aren’t achieving great things! Australia has produced 15 Nobel Prize Laureates who have contributed to the fields of Chemistry, Physics, Medicine and Literature. Eight of its institutions are recognised as being in the top 100 Best Universities worldwide by QS.

Six of the 50 best student cities in the world are Australian cities, according to QS. Australia’s cities are also consistently recognised as having some of the best living conditions in the world.

Popularity Australia is the third most popular international student destination globally. According to the Australian Government, more than 2.5 million international alumni are now working around the world and about 792,422 (by November 2017*) international students are completing their programs in Australian universities since 2017. *Source: Australian Government Dept. of Education and Training.

Destination Australia Australia has a large land mass and, for this reason, a varied climate and landscape. Beautiful beaches line its coast and with great weather year round, you are able to take advantage of this, along with the many events and festivals on offer across the country. The interior of the country is vastly different but still eye-catching, filled with deserts and forests.

Meet the locals Australians are known for being incredibly welcoming and friendly – and this isn’t just the people! Australia is home to some of the most unique flora and fauna in the world. Just a short drive from your campus, and you will be able to see kangaroos and koalas along with many other fascinating animals.

Costs involved in studying in Australia When applying for a student visa in Australia, you need to be able to prove that you have enough funds available to cover the costs of your time in the country. This can be provided through different options. Most commonly, people choose to provide evidence of funds to cover travel to Australia and 12 months of living and course costs. Alternatively, some people choose to provide evidence of personal annual income, which must be at least AU$60,000 and belong to a spouse or parents. Tuition fees vary between institutions, programs and locations. The Australian Government suggests the 12-month living cost to be AU$19,830, which includes food and accommodation. You may find you end up paying more or less than this, depending on your preferences and location.

The best thing about studying in Australia ADAM ROBERTS Senior Vice President, Global Marketing

Tell us a little about your position:

How can students make the most of studying overseas?

I’ve been with EduCo since the start of 2012 and my role is responsible for overseeing the marketing and student recruitment activities for our institutions in Australia, Canada, Ireland and the USA. Over the years I’ve overseen the expansion of our marketing team to now include offices in 16 countries and it’s very exciting to be part of a young, successful and growing company like EduCo.

The most important thing international students can do is get involved in as many activities as possible outside of the classroom. Australia is a great place to explore so make sure you join some adventure tours, meet some wildlife, try some new cultural activities and have a shot at an adventure sport like surfing.

Why do you recommend Australia as a study destination? Being Australian, I may be biased but I believe the country offers a very unique blend of high quality education; a safe, friendly and welcoming environment; affordability; and great work and study options for students. It also offers an incredible mixture of European, Asian and other Western cultures that provide a great platform for international students to prepare for their future careers.

Of course, no matter where you study, it’s important to make friends outside of your own nationality. It’s easy to spend time within your cultural group when you’re away from home but always make an effort to get to know people from Australia and all the other countries your fellow students will be from.

When in Australia, what are three things all students should try/eat/do? 1.

Visit a wildlife park, pat a wombat and feed a koala

2.

Join a university or college club and go on one of their adventure trips

3.

Make an Aussie friend and get invited to a BBQ

“The employability quest is supporting me to communicate well and be successful… not only at a university level but also in the real world of business…”

Magdalena Opalińska

MBA student Southern Cross UniversityMelbourne

The Employability Quest Students can take part in the Employability Quest, a program designed to help prepare international students for the Australian job market. Designed by students, for students, and in close consultation with major industry partners, the program gives students the skills they need to be job ready. As part of the quest, students embark on a series of challenges, workshops and industry engagement activities. With a surplus of graduates entering the workforce this program aims to give students a competitive edge. Many universities do not provide industry-relevant skills for their international students; Southern Cross University’s branch campuses are changing this. By having highly developed communication, creative and team skills, plus direct experience with industry, students will gain confidence in writing an impressive resume.

STUDY in IRELAND Return on Investment

Economy

Students can complete a degree in Ireland for €9,000. They can complete a Master’s degree in 12 months or a Bachelor’s degree in 3-4 years. There are paid internships available and students can work while they study so it is easier for students to bear the costs of their chosen programs. All graduates qualify for post study work visas: 12 months for undergraduate degrees, 24 months for postgraduate.

Ireland’s economy has sustained a robust growth since 2015 and has again posted over 7% estimated GDP growth for 2017 - the highest among the European Union members. The country is home to many European headquarters of multi-nationals like Facebook and Google.

Research Irish universities are in the top 1% of research institutions in the world in terms of research impact across 18 academic disciplines. If you are interested in pursuing a STEM qualification, Ireland provides the opportunity to be involved in research programs that are driving innovation changing lives.

English speaking Ireland is the only English speaking country in the European Union.

Work in Ireland Master’s degree graduates receive a two-year post study work visa. Bachelor’s degree graduates receive a one-year post study work visa. Students may work for 20 hours per week during a school term and 40 hours per week during school breaks which are 4 months of the year.

Destination Ireland When you think of Ireland, you think of ancient cities and lush, rolling green hills. While you will find this to be true, you will also discover bustling urban cities which are hubs for technology and research companies, with a close-knit and welcoming community, making Ireland an ideal study destination.

Costs involved in studying in Ireland Affordable Ireland: What you need to know Tuition fees vary between institutions and programs starting from €9,000 per year. Food and living costs can range from €7,000 to €11,000 per year depending on location and personal preferences. You also need to allocate money for your school supplies and books, as well as other miscellaneous expenses. International students, including those on our foundation pathway programmes, are permitted to work while studying (20 hours p/w per term, 40 hours p/w for 4 months of the year) to augment the cost of living in Ireland. When applying for a student visa for Ireland, you will need to: Have paid your first year course fees. At least €7,000 in a bank account is needed to show you can support living and studying in Ireland. Some students may need to show income or access to funds for subsequent years of study but there will be no visa or medical interviews required.

The best thing about studying in Ireland JACOB KESTNER Managing Director of EduCo Ireland Tell us a little about your position: I’m the Managing Director of EduCo Ireland which means I’m based in Dublin working with our team of staff and tutors, and talking to our students. I also travel around the world promoting our Irish universities and meeting potential students. I was one of a number of people who had the idea that EduCo should come to Ireland and I’m delighted to have been part of making that a reality!

Why do you recommend Ireland as a study destination? Ireland’s historic tradition of great education goes back centuries which combines with its thriving innovation-based economy (the fastest growing in the Eurozone) to make the perfect place to study and work. This beautiful island in the heart of Europe is clean, green and safe. And I think you’ll agree Irish people deserve their reputation as the friendliest in the world!

Why are pathway programs so valuable/why should students consider doing a pathway program? Our pathway programmes are based on campus. And because our pathway programmes count as the ‘year zero’ of a degree, students are fully registered at their university from day one and therefore have full access to all the fantastic facilities, services and support available. This also means they’re able to apply for a Stamp 2 visa which gives students permission to work in Ireland.

When in Ireland, what are the things every students should do? There’s so much to do in Ireland! I used to be a history teacher, so I love the historic buildings and ancient artefacts like the illuminated manuscript, the Book of Kells. I also love getting out into the countryside - it’s my resolution to do more hiking. But I would say the number one thing to do is visit the Irish pubs, order a pint of Guinness and get chatting to the friendliest people in the world!
