It s hard to believe we are on the home stretch, heading towards the end of 2018, where has the time gone! I have to say though, I am a wee bit excited for what this edition has in store for us. There are, school readiness resources and expert advice from sector specialists, a sizzling summer fun feature with games, activities and resources that aim to develop a wide range of skills in the summer terms and beyond and your guide to a glorious graduation celebration. Sound like a familiar sight on Christmas Eve? Maybe from your childhood or perhaps one you have created for your own children? But what if Christmas looks nothing like this for the children attending your centre? The reality is that many children have a version of the picture painted above, but there are those children who share no real connection with the annual red and green-athon displayed in childcare centres across the country. It is in these situations where we encourage you and all your children to find your own meaning of this “special time of the year”. For some it will mean painting as many Christmas trees as humanly possible throughout December, while for others it will be a sense of excitement that the holidays are near. We feel it is important that each and every child has the opportunity to celebrate what and how they would like to over this period, and it all starts with a conversation.
We’ve provided you a wealth of ideas on Christmas in the surrounding pages so if you are stuck for ideas on other ways to celebrate, let us lend a hand: • Seek donations for charity – be it food, clothes or toys, encourage your community to get involved. •B uild to do lists – encourage children to think of all the things they could do or may want to do in the holidays and include an element of literacy into writing a list. •W rite an email to a loved one – encourage children to express gratitude for all the things their parents have done for them throughout the year. • T ransition between rooms or school – prepare children for what to expect, include excursions, diary writing or experiences aimed at developing an awareness of where their next learning journey will go.

RECYCLING WEEK SAVING THE ENVIRONMENT FOR FUTURE GENERATIONS Reduce, Reuse and Recycle National Recycling Week provides us with a wonderful opportunity to reflect, plan and include these educational values into everyday practice. It’s simple! Reduce – the amount of waste we have. Reuse – instead of throwing items away. Recycle – whatever possible.
We know that recycling helps the environment by reducing pollution and decreasing the amount of landfill, but additionally, recycling can teach children important lifelong lessons. If we use both intentional teaching strategies and play based learning experiences, to immerse children in recycling when they are young, they will develop positive habits that become fluid throughout the home, community and later into the workplace.

As well as being beneficial for the environment, recycling can save your school or centre a lot of money promoting creativity, imagination, problem solving, critical thinking and discovery skills. It can also be a lot of fun!
I find many uses for bottle tops, jars, cardboard cylinders, boxes, plastic bottles and containers, magazines, fabric, ribbon, corks, polystyrene trays, tins, cooking utensils, and when combined with the innovative and quality resources from Educational Experience, make the most amazing learning experiences.
Educators and children, teachers and students alike have lots of opportunities to recycle in the classroom and the playground. Paper and card can be reused in the classroom, food scraps can be recycled for chickens, worm farms or compost bins. And waste can be reduced by using colour coded bins like the Three Way Recycling Bin (421383) from Educational Experience. Or whole ecosystems can be created by using

Transition to School “Transition to school” are three words that can trigger a range of emotions for children and their families, as this evolution can be both an exciting and daunting time. Children who have a positive start to their school life are more likely to feel comfortable, secure, excited to learn and settle into this new and unfamiliar environment unperturbed. They tend to build positive relationships with others and develop a sense of belonging in their school community. This journey to school begins in the early years setting.

The expertise of the early childhood setting lies within the practice of play-based learning and the focus of wellbeing, allowing children the opportunity to learn about themselves and where they fit within their world. It is not about withdrawing children away from their play to focus on specific activities but more about providing activities that are flexible and organic, allowing children to use their creativity and express themselves in an individual way. In our preschool, literacy and numeracy are embedded into our curriculum and practised on a daily basis through a variety of mediums. Exposing children to a variety of different life challenges whilst in the early childhood setting, gives them an opportunity to be supported as they navigate their way through. Such exposure enables each child to grow and develop their emotional intelligence and awareness of their world, skills that are necessary for transitioning to school and further life experiences. Being able to self-regulate allows children the ability to learn successfully, and assists in creating a rich environment for a positive transition to school.
Often children come to our early childhood setting without diverse contact to these life experiences. They may have never been away from their families or associated with children the same age, let alone deal with challenging situations that they may encounter at school. Learning to make independent decisions, problem solve and how to regulate their emotions are enormous milestones in themselves. Our setting enables children to make choices in a non-judgemental way and each child is respected and treated as an independent thinker. Children are recognised as capable, resourceful and responsible for their own learning. All the while we work in partnership with the families and schools to provide a smooth transition into the next chapter of the child’s life long learning journey. Brilliantly immersive and delightfully diverse, these times of the year organically encourage exploration in the outdoors.

Creating an educational program that harnesses this natural curiosity and develops an interest and love for being outdoors is critical in the prevention of sedentary activities that provide few developmental benefits. The same principle applies for children at home, whether it be their alternate days to care or in school holidays, getting outside and getting active is an important part of growth for all children. But is extracting children away from their devices as hard as we can claim it is? In a study completed by Charles Sturt University, fifty two children, four to six years old, were asked a set of questions about their favourite activities and their opinions on computer use before and after a seven month computer intervention implemented by the researcher and two more teachers. The results were very interesting! Young children in this study nominated playing outside with their friends as one of their most enjoyable activities. In other words,
young children in this study were fond of technology but they were more fond of sport and peer interaction. So, there you have it! The right resources play a key role in fostering a love for the outdoors as well as engagement with all the elements. Educational Experience is thrilled to bring to you a range of resources dedicated achieving exactly this!
