Did you enjoy the first edition? I certainly found it a great source of inspiration just when I needed it (and maybe when my wishlist didn’t!). In this edition of edextras, I have been reminded of just how jam packed the next few weeks and months are! From important educational weeks such as National Science Week to celebratory days like Father’s Day and Christmas, it looks like the team at Educational Experience are gearing us up for a busy third term. But before you get started, here are a few tips on my favourites in this edition. Firstly, there’s the new additions to the Hape railway, easily one of the most educationally focused and quality made railways systems available to children and educators. Secondly, there is an amazing article written by the Reggio Emelia Scholarship winner of 2017. The article speaks about the use of technology in early childhood and links across to National Science Week - a must read! Lastly, there is the Father s Day and Christmas inspiration, including a beautifully heart warming feature about Fathers of all shapes and sizes. ’

In the Spotlight - Hape Rail Tried & Tested is nothing better than seeing the ‘‘ There smiles and hearing the chitter-chatter and laughter amongst my children whilst playing with the Rail System.

Introducing... the ever energetic Harper and Hudson! Here to review the latest additions to the Hape Rail System, join us with mum Kristen as we discuss why these resources have become a household favourite.
Harper 6 years old and Hudson 3 years old, both share a love and passion for all things transport, most notably, trains. For over 12 months the two brothers have been number one fans of the Hape Rail System, with their large collection continuing to expand as the Hape range does. Avid collector, and mother, Kristen, is continually impressed with the educational value of the range. We spoke with her to discover a little more about why this range is such a hit with her children. Why did you choose the Hape Rail System for your children and your home? I love using the Hape Rail System in my home because it stimulates excitement and there is nothing better than seeing the smiles and hearing the chitter-chatter and laughter amongst my children whilst playing with the Rail System.
They are also very durable just like the tracks. By no means are my kiddies gentle with their toys and when so engrossed in their play they forget to be gentle. The Hape Rail System certainly outlasts many rough rides. And how about educational outcomes? What do you see your children learning as they are engaged with the Hape Rail System? I see the system promoting imaginative play. My boys love to use their own ideas about where the trains are going. “Oops... we went past the ice-cream shop... we need to reverse”. It’s wonderful to see their imaginations in action. Seeing the little ones in action and their minds running wild with ideas as to which place (made up and real) they are travelling too is priceless.
There are some obvious features in the range, tell us about some of your favourites. The blocks are colourful and appealing to the eye (my kids love colourful things).

Visiting the infant-toddler and preschool centres of Reggio Emelia I was curious as to how this topic would be addressed within the rich creative spaces and the home of the hundred languages.

Technology within the Reggio Emelia philosophy
During a presentation by Sara Marastoni and Lucia Colla I was surprised to learn that computers had been part of the services since the 1980’s. This technology continues to play a leading role but in a way that integrates naturally with children’s social learning environment. Together, nature and digital technology provide the children with information and provocation to develop and explore hypothesis.

Resources such as Dewey the Document Camera Stand with Microscope and Light can turn an iPad into a digital microscope, allowing children to come together to view incredible images of new or familiar items and add the element of projection to create enormous images for study or interaction. The possibilities of technology such as this is only limited by our ability to explore.
Digital technology within the centres of Reggio Emilia does not involve games to play or programs to instruct but rather as tools for observation and research. I observed numerous examples of projectors creating large scale images on screens and walls. Digital microscopes reflected minute detail which, in turn, promoted close observation and shared hypothesis.
To embed digital technology into our program we need to see it as a tool for research. There are many, arguably perhaps too many, avenues for children to use computer programs and social media sites in their lives. In our education settings however we can harness digital technology as a tool for creating awe and wonder.

Father’s DAY Father’s Day is the ritualistic honouring of fatherhood and paternal bonds in society and culture.
It is a beautifully traditional and predictable time of the year when children in early childhood settings all over the country converge on the craft trolley looking for any piece of manly goodness they can find to relate to the special father figure in their lives.
