BOOLARNG RESOURCES

CULTURAL DIVERSITY

Educational Experience’s Boolarng programme has been developed to engage with local Indigenous communities across Australia to develop authentic resources with genuine, shareable teaching stories. Boolarng has been named after the Worimi word for ‘together’, and represents Educational Experience’s commitment to a collaborative approach fostering Indigenous cultural awareness, understanding and respect while generating revenue for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, communities and businesses. Kristy Anderson, is a proud Worimi woman, a gifted self-taught artist and full-time mother of twin two year old boys. Kristy is focused on sharing the stories of the Worimi people, one of the largest on-country families in Australia.

SNAKE: The dots on the head and tail mean meeting place of the snake and its people. The grey dots represent all the eggs from the snake and creation. On the outside of the snake is a history of the snakes and its peoples campsites and travels.

GOANNA: The Goanna has left its tracks behind while playing with the children, they are playing hide and seek and all the shapes on the outside represent all the hiding places and fun the kids are having.

PLATYPUS: The dots and circles in the tail represent the beginning of life the middle part are the waterholes and travels of the platypus and the dots and tracks in the bill represent the future.

KANGAROO: The kangaroo tracks represents the travels and journey of the kangaroo and the bigger dots on the outside represents the families it will meet and the smaller dots are all the new areas it will have travelled to.

EMU: Each feather represents all the different family groups in the one area and their connection with each other and to their totem the Emu.

INDIGENOUS RESOURCES

INDIJI READERS Storytelling is a fundamental way of life for Indigenous Australians. From an early age, storytelling plays a vital role in educating children. Through stories, Aboriginal people pass down traditional knowledge, culture, law and beliefs, including appropriate social behaviour, morals, ethics and consequences. Stories help to explain land formations and inhabitants, animal behaviour, where to find certain foods and plant remedies. These Indiji Readers and books allow children to experience and gain knowledge about Aboriginal English and traditional Aboriginal language as well as supporting readers of all abilities to learn about, understand and respect Aboriginal perspective. Indiji readers assist children and educators to gain an insight into the connectedness Aboriginal people have to the land, learn the importance of unified Indigenous and non-Indigenous communities and provide essential knowledge in recognising Aboriginal identity. Warning: Stories may contain the names and images of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people now deceased.

The Books for Little Fullas range features both Aboriginal English and traditional Aboriginal language.
