Disponibilità, affidabilità e qualità sembrano essere le carte vincenti da cercare nel mazzo disperato e costellato di ‘due di picche’ a cui assomiglia il 2020. Concetti a cui si rifà anche Gianni Russo, presidente di UNIC – Concerie Italiane e della conceria Russo di Casandrino, in una intervista rilasciata a La Conceria: “Al settore conciario si impone di elevare ancora di più la propria reattività in termini di servizio, di timing e di soddisfazione delle esigenze qualitative della clientela”. In buona sostanza, in questo momento, si impone la necessità di offrire ai propri clienti una partnership impeccabile. Anche Maurizio Croceri di Liu Jo ce lo ha detto: “I clienti stanno facendo delle scelte chiare e si affideranno solo a chi si è dimostrato disposto a sostenerli e affidabile per quanto concerne velocità e qualità”. Solo un’altra parola chiave sembra essere altrettanto centrale in questo periodo: sostenibilità. Sempre Russo: “L’upgrading che le concerie sono chiamate a mettere in campo deve essere basato su costanti miglioramenti di tutto ciò che è green”. In questo numero di Tannery si parla proprio di un tema che, a pieno titolo, può trovare posto sotto il cappello della sostenibilità: la concia metal free.

Availability, reliability and quality seem to be the winning cards to look for in the desperate deck filled with “two of spades” reminiscent of 2020. These concepts are also mentioned by Gianni Russo, President of UNIC (Italian Tanners’ Association) and owner of the Russo Tannery in Casandrino, in an interview with La Conceria: “The tanning sector is required to increase its reactivity even more in terms of service, timing and satisfaction of the quality needs of customers.” In essence, at this moment, it is required to offer its customers an impeccable partnership. Maurizio Croceri of Liu Jo also told us: “Customers are making clear choices and will only rely on those who are willing to support them and have shown themselves to be reliable in terms of speed and quality.” Only one other keyword seems to be just as crucial in this period: sustainability. Russo continues, “the upgrading that tanneries are called upon to carry out must be based on constant improvements of everything that is green.” In this issue of “Tannery” we talk about a theme that, in its own right, is directly related to sustainability: metal-free tanning.

Beware of greenwashing

THE EXPERT OF SSIP HIGHLIGHTS THE IMPORTANCE OF CHOOSING TRULY SUSTAINABLE TANNING AGENTS In recent years, in response to the demand from fashion brands for metal-free leathers to overcome issues related to metal tanning, alternative chromium tannings that use various molecules or organic salts have been added to the traditional vegetable tanning. The official definition (see standard “UNI EN 15987: 2015 Key definitions for the leather trade”) states: “Metalfree leather: Animal skin/hide converted into leather, whose total content of all tanning metals in leather (Cr, Al, Ti, Zr, Fe) is less than or equal to 0.1% (mass of the sum of all metals/total dry weight of the leather)”. The definition concerns, therefore, what is not present in leather (metals), rather than characterising what is there, namely the non-metallicbased tanning agent. This opens the field to the use of numerous substances (which have tanning activity) and to the need to evaluate their environmental sustainability in a much broader horizon than just the tanning phase, which must include the entire life cycle (LCA), taking account of related environmental criteria. The analysis must therefore start from the production of the tanning agent, with a

Negli ultimi anni, a fronte della richiesta dei brand di moda di pellami metal-free che superino le problematiche legate alla concia metallica, alla tradizionale concia al vegetale si sono affiancate conce alternative al cromo che utilizzano varie molecole o sali organici. La definizione ufficiale (vedi norma “UNI EN 15987: 2015 Definizioni chiave per il commercio del cuoio”) riporta: “Cuoio senza metalli (metal-free): Pelle animale convertita in cuoio, il cui contenuto totale di tutti i metalli concianti nel cuoio (Cr, Al, Ti, Zr, Fe) è minore o uguale allo 0,1% (massa della somma di tutti i metalli/peso secco totale del cuoio)”. Quindi viene definito ciò che non è presente nel pellame (i metalli) piuttosto che caratterizzare ciò che c’è, ovvero il conciante a base non-metallica. Questo apre il campo all’utilizzo di numerose sostanze (che abbiano attività conciante) e alla necessità di valutarne la sostenibilità ambientale in un orizzonte ben più ampio della sola fase di concia, che deve comprendere l’intero ciclo di vita (LCA), tenendo conto dei criteri ambientali correlati. L’analisi deve quindi partire dalla produzione del conciante, con un’attenta valutazione delle fonti, se rinnovabili o meno, comprendere le varie fasi in conceria, e finire alla degradazione della molecola negli impianti di depurazione. Un problema attualmente noto delle conce non metalliche è che mettono sotto stress l’efficienza degli impianti di depurazione. Ciò può essere dovuto alla natura del refluo, perché, avendo una composizione molto diversa, può provocare degli squilibri in impianti progettati per funzionare con il ciclo della concia al cromo. Questo può comunque essere considerato un problema transitorio e risolvibile nel lungo periodo con degli aggiustamenti impiantistici. Bisogna però anche considerare la possibilità che i nuovi concianti non apportino i previsti benefici in chiave ambientale: questo perché non è automatico che una sostanza organica sia naturalmente biodegradabile: anzi, molte delle sostanze organiche di sintesi sono scarsamente o per nulla biodegradabili, con la conseguenza di andare ad incrementare il numero degli inquinanti organici persistenti, ovvero quelle

A currently known problem of non-metallic tanning is that they stress the efficiency of purification plants. This may be due to the nature of the wastewater, because, having a very different composition, can cause imbalances in plants designed to work with the chrome tanning cycle.

This can, however, be considered a transitory problem that can be solved in the long term with system adjustments. It is though also necessary to consider the possibility that the new tanning agents do not bring the expected benefits in an environmental key: that is because it does not happen automatically that an organic substance is naturally biodegradable: indeed, many of the synthetic organic substances are poorly or not at all biodegradable, with the consequence to increase the number of persistent organic pollutants, or those chemical

substances that persist in the environment, bio-accumulate through the food chain and carry the risk of causing negative effects on human health and the environment. The use of a metal-free tanning substance that wants to be truly eco-sustainable and not the result of a greenwashing operation must therefore take into account, in addition to the fundamental feature of making nonperishable leather, also the principles of Green Chemistry in its synthesis, and finally the ability to be efficiently degraded in purification plants or at the end of the leather’s life cycle.

A SYSTEM THAT COMBINES QUALITY, SUSTAINABILITY AND EFFICIENCY In recent decades, chrome tanning has been the most common and dominant form of tanning. Compared to its predecessor vegetable tanning, chrome tanning is much faster. But with sustainability now an industry priority, the environmental disadvantages of chrome tanning are becoming harder to overlook. In line with their commitment to responsible chemistry, Stahl offers a metal-free tanning system that enables tanners to produce high-quality leather more sustainably: Stahl EasyWhite Tan®. Outstanding leathers Stahl EasyWhite Tan® enables tanners to produce leathers of the highest quality. Specifically, leather tanned using Stahl EasyWhite Tan® is soft and smooth, while remaining dimensionally and thermally stable. The collagen fibers are less damaged during the tanning process since no pickle is used. This results in a tighter grain, less nubucation, and decreased vein visibility. Additionally, the stronger fibers make the leather more durable, tear-resistant, and versatile, enabling the production of high-quality leathers that are thinner and lighter than ever before.

Improved environmental impact The production of these outstanding leathers has a significantly improved impact on the environment. For instance, Stahl EasyWhite Tan® enables tanners to reduce the salt content of wastewater by at least 80%. What’s more, by using a metal-free tanning system, tanners can reduce chemical usage by a third. And finally, water usage can also be halved: in conventional chrome tanning, around 12,000 liters of water are required for the production of 1,000 hides. By contrast, with Stahl EasyWhite Tan®, only 6,000 liters of water are required.

Increased process efficiency Besides reducing environmental impact without compromising on leather quality, Stahl EasyWhite Tan® also offers tanners the opportunity to shorten the tanning process. Specifically, both the pickling and basification process steps required in chrome-tanning are no longer necessary – enabling time savings of around seven hours. Along with this, the required working and machining time and risk of manufacturing errors also decrease.

“A heavy metal-free tanning has certainly a low environmental impact, with high biodegradability features, and is ideal for creating items for people allergic to chromium and other metals”, explains Enrico Gastaldello, general manager of SYNBIOS SpA. To make metal free leathers, carrying out the tanning process without the use of metals is however not enough. Also the choice of the finishing products and the dyes used, which in turn must be metal free, is very important. For this purpose, SYN-BIOS SpA has developed a new range of micro-dispersed pigments in aqueous system (called METAL-FREE®), specially selected to create metal-free leathers also in the finishing phase, in compliance with the standard UNI EN 15987:2015 ["Animal skin converted into leather, whose total content of all tanning

La serie METAL-FREE® sviluppata da SYN-BIOS SpA, oltre a rispettare tutti i limiti della MRSL v.2.0 di ZDHC, è inoltre strutturata in modo da permettere di usare tutti i colori, da soli od in combinazione, senza superare nell’articolo finito la concentrazione dello 0,1% della somma dei cinque metalli concianti.

Liquid dyes, pigments, compounds, resins, fillers and so on: a complete range of products for finishing metal-free leathers that offer extraordinary results. “We can talk about Metal Free 2.0 - explains the new general manager Finikem, Emanuele Rappa – If at first we concentrated on the features of the finishing product to be proposed to the tanner, now we have shifted the focus on the finished leather, thinking about the compliance that it must have, completely overturning the research approach. Thinking in this way, Finikem has managed to develop a product line that results in high quality finished leathers on which the limits of detectable metals are far below legislative parameters”. As the R&D manager Finikem, Alessandro Tamburini explains, for a leather to be defined as metal free*, the sum of the individual metals present tied to it (chromium, aluminum, zinc, titanium and iron) must be less than 0.1% i.e. less than 1000 ppm. Starting from here, the Tuscan company has definitely gone very far. “It is no longer enough for us to comply with regulations.

Coloranti liquidi, pigmenti, compound, resine, filler e così via: una gamma completa di prodotti per rifinire le pelli senza metalli che offrono risultati al di fuori dell’ordinario. “Possiamo parlare di Metal Free 2.0 - spiega il nuovo direttore generale Finikem, Emanuele Rappa - Se prima ci si concentrava sulle caratteristiche del prodotto di rifinizione da proporre al conciatore, ora abbiamo spostato il focus sulla pelle finita, pensando alla compliance che essa dovrà avere, capovolgendo completamente l’approccio di ricerca. Ragionando in questo modo Finikem è riuscita a sviluppare una linea di prodotti che porta ad ottenere pelli finite di alta qualità sulle quali i limiti di metalli rilevabili sono molto al di sotto dei parametri di legge”. Come ci spiega il responsabile R&S Finikem, Alessandro Tamburini, perché una pelle possa essere definita metal free*, la somma dei singoli metalli presenti legati ad essa (cromo, alluminio, zinco, titanio e ferro), deve essere minore dello 0,1% e cioè inferiore a 1000 ppm. Partendo da qui l’azienda toscana è andata decisamente molto avanti. “Oggi non ci basta più essere conformi alle normative. Sulle pelli rifinite con i prodotti di questa nuova linea, la presenza di metalli è talmente bassa da essere quasi non rilevabile. In questo modo anche i conciatori che lavorano con le firme e con capitolati stringenti possono operare con la massima tranquillità”. Come siete arrivati a questi risultati? “Questi prodotti sono frutto di un paio di anni di ricerca condotta all’interno dei nostri laboratori. Abbiamo lavorato su materie prime più sicure, provato e cambiato componenti, fatto prove su prove con tanto di analisi di laboratorio di controllo prima di mettere a punto le formulazioni corrette. Ma ora ci siamo e la nostra linea è pronta per soddisfare le richieste più stringenti” conclude Tamburini. I laboratori Finikem sono a disposizione di chi voglia effettuare prove di rifinizione utilizzando i prodotti della nuova linea FM.

Even the R&D department of Tecnochimica has long accepted the challenge of metal free tanning. The Tuscan chemical-tanning company that has established itself on international markets thanks to its vast range of chemicals offered, all based on quality and respect for the environment (synthetic tannins, resins, oils and fatliquors, auxiliaries for liming, dyes and finishing products) has developed a system for tanning hides without the use of metal. We talked about it with Simone Gelli, at the head of the company in Castelfranco di Sotto (Pisa) together with three partners. What is Tecnochimica’s approach to this theme? “When you think of soft, elastic and fluffy leather, the “hand” of chromium or aldehyde tanning immediately comes to mind. For our metal free process we have chosen these characteristics as a reference and we can guarantee not only that we have achieved our goal, but also that some characteristics have even been improved”. What does your metal-free tanning system consist of? “We used synthetic tannins, polymers with low formaldehyde and free phenols besides fatliquors entirely produced by us in order to obtain a high level

L’azienda chimico-conciaria toscana che si è affermata sui mercati internazionali grazie alla vasta gamma di prodotti chimici offerti, tutti improntati sulla qualità e sul rispetto dell’ambiente (tannini sintetici, resine, oli e ingrassi, ausiliari per calcinaio, coloranti e prodotti per il finishing) ha sviluppato un sistema per conciare le pelli senza l’utilizzo di metalli. Ne abbiamo parlato con Simone Gelli, alla guida dell’azienda di Castelfranco di sotto (Pisa) insieme a tre soci. Qual è l’approccio di Tecnochimica a questo argomento? “Quando si pensa ad una pelle morbida, elastica e soffice viene subito in mente la “mano” del cromo o della concia all’aldeide. Per il nostro metal free abbiamo preso come riferimento queste caratteristiche e possiamo garantire non solo che siamo riusciti nel nostro intento, ma anche che alcune caratteristiche sono state addirittura migliorate”. In cosa consiste il vostro sistema di concia esente da metalli? “Abbiamo usato tannini sintetici, polimeri con bassi tenori di formaldeide e fenoli liberi oltre agli ingrassi interamente di nostra produzione per ottenere un’alta affinità con la nostra preconcia senza metalli ed ottimizzare i risultati”. Che tipo di esperienza avete avuto sul mercato? “Per consolidare le nostre ricerche abbiamo commissionato la produzione di vari articoli per pelletteria e calzature a professionisti locali per confrontarci con rinomati artigiani che hanno confermato la bontà del nostro sistema”. Quali sono stati i risultati? “Il prodotto destinato al settore calzaturiero ha evidenziato caratteristiche di ottima resistenza alle sollecitazioni meccaniche di premonta e cambratura, così come anche il prodotto destinato alla pelletteria che ha permesso la piegatura della pelle in quattro bordi senza nessun cedimento del fiore”. Lo staff tecnico di Tecnochimica è a disposizione dei conciatori per effettuare prove e sviluppare nuovi progetti.

What were the results? “The product destined for the footwear sector has shown characteristics of excellent resistance to mechanical stress of the tack-lasting machine and seat and shank lasting machine, as well as the product destined for the leather goods sector which can be folded along four edges without the grain yielding at all”. An ideal MF system Un sistema MF ideale per calzature for footwear and leather goods e pelletteria The search for less impactful production processes, able to keep the high quality of the finished leather, represents an unprecedented challenge for the chemical tanning sector. Also Leather Kem, a young chemical tanning company based in Tuscany, offers itself to the tanner as firstrate chemical partner for the production of sustainable high quality leathers. “The markets are increasingly demanding and selective in terms of sustainability and processes, which is why we have decided to invest time and resources on the development of a metal-free tanning system”, explains the owner of Leather Kem, Federico Giglioli. ”Our Metal Free tanning process is among the most advanced on the tanning market - adds the entrepreneur - It allows to obtain metal-free

leathers to meet the demands of every sector, in particular for the production of footwear, leather goods and belts, presenting high performance in terms of temperature of leather shrinkage, tear and light-proof”. How does it work? “The system we have developed does not involve the use of glutaric aldehydes and of course no types of metal, not even in small quantities. Our process begins with a very particular type of semitanning, which provides for the definitive stabilisation of the skin’s collagen and prepares it to be processed for mechanical splitting and shaving operations. Subsequently, with the retanning, dyeing and fatliquoring phases, the desired articles are definitively characterised”, concludes Giglioli.

Come funziona? “Il sistema che abbiamo sviluppato non prevede utilizzo di aldeidi glutariche e naturalmente nessun tipo di metallo, nemmeno in piccole quantità. Il nostro processo inizia con un tipo di semiconcia molto particolare, che prevede la stabilizzazione in maniera definitiva del collagene della pelle e la prepara per essere lavorata alle operazioni meccaniche di spaccatura e rasatura. Successivamente con le fasi di riconcia, tintura ed ingrasso si caratterizzano in maniera definitiva gli articoli desiderati” conclude Giglioli.

An even sharper and more defined print

Una stampa ancora più nitida e definita LA SUPERSTAR T È IDEALE PER LAVORARE PELLI METAL FREE Nel processo di lavorazione delle pelli metal free naturalmente è molto importante anche la tecnologia. L’ultima novità in questo campo arriva da Bergi che nel mese di settembre lancerà proprio una nuova macchina a stirare e stampare che opera a basse temperature e risulta ideale per lavorare pelli a concia vegetale o a concia bianca. La new entry si chiama “Superstar T”, una pressa per stirare e stampare in continuo con giostra a revolver per il cambio rulli automatico che garantisce prestazioni di indubbio interesse. Come ci spiega l’azienda veneta che l’ha progettata, i motivi che differenziano questa macchina dalle concorrenti sono principalmente due: l’aumento della superficie di contatto tra rullo operatore e pelle su una macchina verticale (senza avvolto) e l’elevata pressione di lavoro raggiungibile (fino a 350 Kg/cm lineare). “L’idea di aumentare la superficie di contatto per ottenere una stampa più nitida e ben definita, ancora più evidente nelle grane grosse, è nata con il progetto della SuperVario T presentato nel 2019 e che sta riscuotendo un notevole successo – spiega l’imprenditore Mauro Bergozza -. In pratica la SuperStar T riprende lo stesso concetto di lavoro della SuperVario T ma anziché essere provvista di un paranco è dotata di un sistema di cambio rulli operatori automatico a revolver”. Bergi spiega che l’aumento di superficie tra il rullo operatore e la pelle conferisce un ulteriore beneficio in termini di lucentezza e morbidezza al tatto anche alle pelli stirate o satinate, perché si sono potute abbassare sia la temperatura che la pressione di lavoro. La riduzione della temperatura di lavoro abbinata all’aumento della superficie di contatto apporta un grosso beneficio alle pelli “metal free” perché non si irrigidiscono e non cambiano colore. Forti di questi risultati Bergi ha deciso di affiancare alla Superstar, la classica pressa per il finito da calzatura e pelletteria, un modello superiore, appunto la SuperStar T, una macchina che sta ottenendo un rilevante successo grazie alle sue eccezionali performance qualitative e produttive. “Con la sola SuperStar T oggi siamo in grado di lavorare sia su pieno fiore a basse pressioni che stampare grane grosse ad alte pressioni talvolta sostituendo persino la pressa a piatto” conclude Bergozza.

SUPERSTAR T IS IDEAL FOR WORKING METAL FREE LEATHERS Technology is, of course, also very important in the metal free leather manufacturing process. The latest innovation in this field comes from Bergi which in September will launch a new ironing and printing machine that operates at low temperatures and is ideal for working with vegetable or wet white leathers. The new entry is named “Superstar T”, a press for ironing and continuous printing with revolver carousel for automatic roller change which ensures interesting performances. The reasons that differentiate this machine from those of competitors are mainly two: the increase in the contact surface between the operator roller and the hide on a vertical machine (without roll) and the achievable high working pressure (up to 350 Kg/linear cm). “The idea of increasing the contact surface to obtain a sharper and more defined print, even more evident in large grains, was born with the SuperVario T - explains the entrepreneur Mauro Bergozza -. SuperStar T resumes the same working concept as SuperVario T but instead of being equipped with a hoist it is equipped with an automatic revolver operator

roller change system”. Bergi explains that the increase in surface area between the operator roller and the hide confers an additional benefit in terms of shine and softness to the touch even to stretched or satin-finished leathers, because it was possible to lower both the temperature and the working pressure. The reduction in the working temperature combined with the increase in the contact surface brings a great benefit to “metal free” leathers, because they do not stiffen and do not change colour. Bergi has decided to combine the Superstar, the classic press for the finished shoe and leather goods, with a superior model which is exactly SuperStar T, a machine with an exceptional quality and production performance. “With the SuperStar T alone, today we are able to work both on full grain at low pressures and print large grains at high pressures, sometimes even replacing the plate press”, concludes Bergozza.

A STUDY ON RECALCITRANT COD The fourth webinar recently organised by Italian Leather Research Institute-SSIP on the theme “Purification 4.0: study from COD recalcitrant to traditional purification systems” was very interesting. To introduce the session was the Head of the Polytechnic of Leather Serena Iossa, who introduced Eng. Daniela Caracciolo, head of the new Department o f Te c h n o l o g i e s f o r t h e Environment of the Research and Development Area of SSIP, who then held the webinar. The speaker started by recalling that SSIP has carried out several projects for the treatment of wastewaters and has always been interested in all research activities related to the environmental tanning sector. Thus, the in-depth study on recalcitrant COD and the related collaboration with purification plants was born. With the implementation of alternative concepts, there was a significant variability in the polluting load in the wastewater and a increase of recalcitrant COD. The aim of the research – explained Caracciolo - is to identify which substances present in the water coming from the purification plants are responsible for the recalcitrant COD, trying, thanks to in-depth analyses, to avoid as much as possible the release of these non-biodegradable or hardly biodegradable components. The speaker then moved on to the analysis of the articles of literature, where it was found that the recalcitrant COD derives from organic substances refrac-

UNO STUDIO SUL COD RECALCITRANTE Molto interessante il quarto webinar recentemente organizzato dalla Stazione Sperimentale per l’industria delle pelli e delle materie concianti-SSIP sul tema “Depurazione 4.0: studio del COD recalcitrante ai sistemi depurativi tradizionali”. Ad aprire i lavori la Responsabile Area Politecnico del Cuoio Serena Iossa che ha introdotto l’ing. Daniela Caracciolo, responsabile del nuovo Dipartimento delle Tecnologie per l’Ambiente dell’Area Ricerca e Sviluppo di SSIP, che ha tenuto il webinar. La relatrice ha iniziato ricordando che SSIP ha svolto diversi progetti sul trattamento delle acque di scarico e da sempre si interessa di tutte le attività di ricerca connesse al settore ambientale conciario. Da qui è scaturito l’approfondimento sul COD recalcitrante e la relativa collaborazione con gli impianti depurativi. Con l’implementazione di conce alternative si è infatti assistito a una sensibile variabilità del carico inquinante nelle acque reflue e ad un incremento del COD recalcitrante. L’obiettivo della ricerca – ha spiegato Caracciolo - è quello di individuare quali sostanze presenti nelle acque provenienti dagli impianti di depurazione sono responsabili del COD recalcitrante, e cercare, grazie ad analisi approfondite, di evitare quanto più possibile l’uscita di questi componenti non biodegradabili o difficilmente biodegradabili. La relatrice ha quindi svolto un’analisi degli articoli di letteratura, nei quali è stato riscontrato che il COD recalcitrante deriva da sostanze organiche refrattarie all’ossidazione, già oggetto di studio in quanto nocive per l’ambiente e per l’essere umano. Tra queste vi sono i POP, Inquinanti organici persistenti e gli ECD, sostanze chimiche che interferiscono nel normale funzionamento del Sistema endocrino. Molte associazioni, come ad esempio la ZDHC, richiedono il divieto o il controllo degli scarichi delle industrie conciarie o tessili per garantire che non ci siano sostanze di questo tipo: l’obiettivo comune è arrivare a uno scarico zero delle sostanze pericolose. Per questo motivo, grazie al trasferimento nella nuova sede e all’ampliamento del parco macchine, la SSIP offre ora la possibilità di analizzare concentrazioni anche minime di queste sostanze con metodi altamente sofisticati. In ultima analisi, sono stati illustrati i nuovi strumenti e le tecniche messe a disposizione dalla Stazione Sperimentale e dall’Università di Napoli a questo scopo, come l’ICP MS, la HPLC MS-MS, la nano LC-MS/MS orbitrap e il sistema Maldi TOF-TOF 4800 plus.

Many associations, such as ZDHC, require the prohibition or control of discharges from tanning or textile industries to verify that there are no substances of this type: the common goal is to achieve zero discharge of hazardous substances. For this reason, thanks to the transfer to the new SSIP headquarters and the expansion of machinery, it is now possible to analyse even minimal concentrations of these substances with highly sophisticated methods. In the end, it were illustrated the new tools and techniques made available by the SSIP and by the University of Naples for this purpose, such as the ICP MS, the HPLC MS-MS, the nano LC-MS/MS orbitrap and the Maldi TOF-TOF 4800 plus system.

New antibacterial Nuovi articoli antibatterici leather items Present at Prossimapelle on 15 July, Chimica Vemar exhibited a selection of fashion proposals for the A/W 21-22 season and some items made with a new antibacterial treatment based on biocides, such as Nappa and Leather Goods. “These methods concern both the wet phase and the finishing phase and derive from the automotive sector, where the need to keep the bacterial load of the environments under control is particularly felt. Now we have modified and adapted them to meet the requirements of the hides used in the footwear and leather goods sectors”, explains to us the company. In particular, the antibacterial treatment is based on a new component developed and patented by Chimica Vemar which increases the absorption of tannins and retanning agents and reduces COD emssions. Features that evidently improve its efficiency and sustainability profile. Leather Chemists I Chimici del Cuoio support anti-Covid sostengono la ricerca anti-Covid research During the difficult period that has forced us to lockdown restrictions, AICC’s Board of Directors decided to support a research body that would do its utmost to find a solution to the problem of Covid-19, either as drug therapy or vaccine. The choice fell on the Toscana Life Sciences Foundation (TLS), a nonprofit organisation that has been operating since 2005 with the aim of supporting research activities in the field of life sciences and, in particular, to support the development of projects from basic research to industrial application. Toscana Life Sciences Foundation and INMI Spallanzani have signed an agreement for an innovative research project to develop human monoclonal antibodies in response to SARS-CoV-2 infection, with the intention of using them for prophylactic/ therapeutic purposes and as molecular bait to search for antigens in order to develop vaccines. The Board of Directors decided therefore, unanimously, to donate the sum of six thousand euro to this body, in the hope that this could represent a step towards the goal desired by all of us of a return to normality. Durante il difficile periodo che ci ha costretto al lockdown, il Consiglio Direttivo AICC ha deciso di sostenere un ente di ricerca che si prodigasse nel trovare una soluzione, che fosse di terapia farmacologica o come vaccino, al problema del Covid-19. La scelta è caduta sulla Fondazione Toscana Life Sciences (TLS), un ente Noprofit che opera dal 2005 con l’obiettivo di supportare le attività di ricerca nel campo delle scienze della vita e, in particolare, per sostenere lo sviluppo di progetti dalla ricerca di base all’applicazione industriale. Fondazione Toscana Life Sciences e INMI Spallanzani hanno siglato un accordo per un innovativo progetto di ricerca per lo sviluppo di anticorpi monoclonali umani in risposta all’infezione da SARS-CoV-2, con l’intento di utilizzarli a scopo profilattico/terapeutico e come esca molecolare per la ricerca di antigeni per lo sviluppo di vaccini. Il Consiglio Direttivo ha quindi deciso, all’unanimità, di devolvere la cifra di seimila euro a favore di tale ente, nella speranza che questo possa rappresentare un passo verso il traguardo ambito, da parte di tutti noi, di un ritorno alla normalità. Nella lettera di ringraziamento del Presidente Fabrizio Landi e del Direttore Generale Andrea Paolini del TLS si legge: “Gentile Presidente Mecenero, a nome di tutta la Fondazione Toscana Life Sciences ringraziamo Lei e l’Associazione Italiana dei Chimici del Cuoio per la fiducia riposta nel progetto e nelle attività che, in questa situazione di emergenza sanitaria e non solo, stiamo indirizzando verso la strada di una possibile soluzione all’epidemia da coronavirus SARSCoV-2. Apprezziamo gli obiettivi della vostra Associazione, promuovere la cultura scientifica, favorire il networking, supportare attivamente la formazione scolastica, che condividiamo anche se in un ambito diverso, quelle delle scienze della vita, e siamo lieti per la decisione del vostro Consiglio Direttivo di supportare la ricerca di TLS. (...) In particolare, la vostra donazione ci permetterà di portare avanti con ancora maggiore impegno il progetto di ricerca già avviato dal nostro gruppo di ricerca, in stretta collaborazione con l’INMI Lazzaro Spallanzani di Roma, nonché di attrarre giovani e promettenti ricercatori che possano collaborare al progetto. Cogliamo l’occasione per anticiparvi che, già nei prossimi giorni, potremo annunciare i primi promettenti risultati derivanti dall’attività di ricerca”.

THE INNOVATION OFFERS A HIGHER FILTERING SURFACE The micro filtering system Cleandisc represents the evolution of the traditional screening system, and improves the efficiency in removing the suspended solid waste, before later treatment operations, whether the tannery has its own or discharges into a centralised effluent treatment plant. With a capacity from 5 to 100 m³/h wastewater filters produced by SC are used whenever there are any types of solids to be removed from wastewaters. First developed to meet the needs of tanneries, during the years they have gradually been used for other types of production, such as food and beverage, industrial laundries, recovery of ferrous scrap, agriculture, etc. The innovative and patented system developed by SC is the evolution of a well known and widely tested machine, the rotating disc filter, which has been improved for an easier and quicker maintenance of the filtering nets. The innovation introduced by SC makes it possible to have a higher filtering surface than traditional systems, making it possible to use 100% of the filtering surface. I sistemi di microfiltrazione Cleandisc rappresentano l’evoluzione della grigliatura tradizionale e permettono di migliorare l’efficienza nella rimozione dei materiali in sospensione, prima delle fasi successive di trattamento, sia che l’industria scarichi in un proprio impianto, che in uno centralizzato. Con una portata che va da 5 fino a 100 m³/h i filtri per acque di scarico prodotti dalla SC sono impiegati ovunque sia necessario rimuovere residui, di qualsiasi tipo, dalle acque di scarico. Nati per venire incontro alle esigenze dell’industria conciaria, hanno nel tempo trovato applicazione anche in altri settori quali quello alimentare, delle lavanderie industriali, del recupero di rottami ferrosi, agricolo, ecc. Il sistema, innovativo e brevettato, proposto da SC, rappresenta l’evoluzione di una macchina già ampiamente collaudata, il filtro a dischi rotanti, opportunamente modificato per rendere più agevole e rapida la manutenzione delle reti filtranti. L’innovazione introdotta da SC permette di avere una superficie filtrante superiore rispetto ai tradizionali sistemi, arrivando ad utilizzare il 100% di superficie. Inoltre, grazie all’innovativo e brevettato sistema di fissaggio del disco senza albero centrale, è stata resa molto più semplice la rimozione e la sostituzione del filtro, oltre alla sua pulizia e manutenzione. Non è più necessario così un interevento tecnico specializzato per la loro manutenzione. Un'altra caratteristica dei filtri SC è la modularità: è infatti possibile in caso di incremento del volume di acqua da filtrare, affiancare altre unità ad una già esistente. Il collegamento è semplice grazie alle speciali flangiature presenti sulla macchina. I filtri SC si caratterizzano così per la loro versatilità e sono utilizzati sia in realtà aziendali medio-grandi che in aziende di più piccole dimensioni.
