FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK: ENDINGS AND BEGINNINGS The 2014-2015 school year is racing to an end – with celebrations – year-end picnics in the park and breakfasts, the graduation of our immersion seniors and the promotion of our fifth graders. This time of year is the ending of the K-12 Immersion experience for our graduating seniors and the beginning of their next stage on the journey to adulthood. Each year Edison hosts an Immersion Seniors Graduation Celebration here on campus. Saturday we welcomed back the Edison 5th grade class of 2008 and it was wonderful to reconnect with these young adults who were so dear to us as children, to applaud their perseverance, and hear where they are headed next. It’s equally lovely to see their families again and celebrate the children’s accomplishments together. Teachers from all three schools attend hand out Immersion Medallions and California State Seals of Biliteracy, and award some scholarships from the Edison PTA. These celebrations feel like family reunions and they are truly the day when it is so clear that we are 3 Schools, 2 Languages, and 1 Program! Wednesday evening we’ll celebrate the accomplishments of our current 5th graders as they promote to 6th grade. It’s bittersweet to say goodbye to these 78 children and their families, but we send them on well-prepared for middle school. If they’re anything like their predecessors, many will be back to volunteer at Festival de Otoño, to attend the Valentine’s Dance, and to perform community service hours with the elementary school students. And we’ll await their return in seven years as they graduate from high school as the class of 2022! We’re already beginning work for 2015-2016 school year – enrolling new Kindergartners, packing up the school for summer cleaning, working on summer professional development opportunities for teachers, and putting together schedules and calendars of events. If you’re looking forward to seeing your child’s class assignment on Wednesday, August 19, please be aware that we can’t post student names on class lists until any needed inter-district permits have been obtained and any changes in address are documented. If you’ve moved and need to bring in proof of a new address or if you’ve moved out of district and need to get an inter-district permit, please do your very best to bring your information current before the end of the year. If you have a new Kindergartner and live outside SMMUSD, make sure you have your permit filed before the first day of school. Permits are generally a simple matter and Yoly can help you (call 310 828-0335, ext. 61-307). See you in August! Kindergarten Picnic Sunday, August 17
